Is Fighting in Mixed Martial Arts Moral? (Special Podcast Highlight)

bonus

Do you have a need for speed? Is fighting in Mixed Martial Arts moral? Is engaging in a risky sport morally problematic? Patrick navigates through this ethical question and provide some insights into assessing the risks and purposes of engaging in such activities. His perspective is that engaging in a sport like mixed martial arts is not inherently immoral as long as it is pursued for the sake of sport, without undue risks to one's health. He emphasizes that if a sport poses a significant risk of physical harm, it can raise moral concerns. Patrick refers to the Fifth Commandment, "thou shalt not kill," and suggests that this commandment should be considered when evaluating activities that could cause unnecessary harm to the body. He differentiates between defending oneself or others in a situation where harm may be inevitable and participating in extreme sports solely for thrills, which he views as potentially sinful if there is no compelling reason for the risk involved. Patrick also raises the importance of assessing the purpose behind participating in a sport and questions whether it is worth potentially causing serious harm to oneself or others. He advises considering the moral principles of the church when evaluating such activities. Patrick concludes that participating in mixed martial arts or similar sports are nothing to be concerned about if the risks are reasonably low and justifiable, but he expresses caution about sports that have a high likelihood of causing significant harm, bringing up the example of Muhammad Ali's health deterioration due to repeated head injuries in boxing.

Is There Salvation Outside the Catholic Church? (Special Podcast Highlight)

bonus

Does a follower of Jesus have to be Catholic in order to be granted salvation? Patrick Madrid is here to give you clarity. Jane from Chicago expresses her belief that people from other churches and faiths who prioritize Jesus should not be excluded from salvation. Patrick Madrid responds by explaining the Catholic Church's teaching on salvation. He emphasizes that salvation is found in the Church which Jesus Christ founded and that Vatican II emphasized this point. He also mentions that Jesus warned that some who claim to follow Him may be shocked to find out they are not true followers. Patrick Madrid highlights that it is not for humans to decide who will be saved, as only God knows that. Regarding those who genuinely seek God but may not know about the Catholic Church, Patrick Madrid explains that the Church believes in the possibility of salvation for them as well, through God's mercy. He mentions the importance of repentance, baptism, entering the Church, and receiving the sacraments, emphasizing Jesus' words about the Eucharist. To support his argument, Patrick Madrid reads a section from Vatican II's document "Lumen Gentium," which reaffirms the Church's teaching that it is necessary for salvation, as Christ is the one mediator and unique way to salvation. However, he acknowledges that God's mercy is not fully understood, and we must continue to share the good news while praying for those who may not enter the Church for various reasons.

A Teacher Stuck in the Middle of Transgender Madness Calls In (Special Podcast Highlight)

bonus

If you were a teacher and you were told that you couldn't tell parents that their children want to change their gender, what would you do? Would you feel compelled to break the school system's rules? Would you quit your job and be willing to find a new one? Would you be willing to face punishment for standing up for truth? Patrick Madrid speaks with a caller named Jane from Jacksonville, Illinois. Jane expresses her concern about a growing trend in schools where children at very young ages are expressing a desire to identify as the opposite gender. She shares that as a school worker, she is unable to communicate these concerns to parents due to privacy rules, and she is seeking advice on what she, as a Catholic, should do in this situation. Patrick empathizes with Jane's dilemma and acknowledges the difficulty of her position. He strongly condemns the adults in authority who are allowing this trend to occur and accuses them of deceiving parents and harming innocent children. He suggests that Jane, being a good person who cares about the well-being of the children, should consider leaving her job if she finds herself compromising her moral beliefs. He applauds the idea of taking a heroic stand by speaking the truth to parents, even if it leads to getting fired. He recognizes that not everyone can take such a stance due to financial obligations. Patrick suggests that parents should communicate with their children and inquire about any exposure to gender-related ideologies in school. He encourages parents to be proactive in investigating what their children are being taught and to support teachers like Jane who are trying to navigate this challenging situation.
