Good morning. North Carolina. I'm Aaron Jolly. In Step outside you’ll feel it, that heavy, damp air clinging to you like a wet sweater. We’re waking up to dense fog across the southeast, with visibility dropping to a quarter-mile in spots. If you’re driving this morning, take it slow and keep those headlights on. That gray blanket should lift by mid-morning, setting the stage for a warm, wild day. Here’s what’s happening statewide. The Piedmont wakes up to patchy fog until about 10 A.M., then sunshine fights its way out. You’re looking at a high of 79 degrees — that’s 32 degrees warmer than usual for early March. Southwest winds pick up, gusting to 21 miles an hour. You might see a stray thunderstorm late today, but the real action waits until tonight. Down in the Triangle, the fog burns off faster. By noon, it feels like late April with highs hitting 81 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Just keep an eye to the west — a stray shower could roll in late tonight as temperatures dip to 65. The mountains are the wild card today. Mostly sunny skies give way to scattered showers and thunderstorms by mid-afternoon, hitting 76 degrees. Tonight is when things get interesting. The National Weather Service has flagged a marginal risk for severe weather west of I-85, especially in the foothills. Damaging wind gusts are the main threat there. Tonight, storms roll through the mountains and Piedmont after 8 P.M. With a and thunder. Lows stay mild — 63 in the Piedmont, 65 in the Triangle. And 56 up high. Sunday brings a cold front sweeping through with widespread showers and storms. Highs drop slightly — 77 in the Piedmont, 78 in the Triangle. And 71 in the mountains. Rainfall totals could hit a quarter-inch, but gusts up to 22 miles an hour will grab your attention. Looking ahead, the warmth hangs on through midweek. Highs climb into the low 80s by Tuesday. Then a strong cold front crashes the party Thursday. By Friday, highs struggle to hit 60 — a sharp 32 degrees-degree swing from Wednesday’s summer-like feel. Enjoy the spring preview today, but don't put away the rain gear just yet. See you tomorrow. See you this afternoon.
