Special Edition: Hate Changing Clocks? Here's Why We Do It
It's been almost a week since Daylight Saving Time began. Why we do change our clocks twice a year? Polls have shown most American adults don't like it. The Senate just easily passed a bill to stop the practice of changing our clocks, although if it actually becomes law, it would be up to the states whether to stay on Standard Time or switch to Daylight Saving Time year-round. Today, we're sharing a bit about DST's past. Here to break it down for us is the man who wrote the book on time, Dr. Mike O'Malley. He's the author of "Keeping Watch: A History of American Time," and he teaches history at George Mason University. O'Malley explains why the very idea of a man-made clock was controversial in the beginning, how it evolved into the practice of changing our clocks twice a year, and some pros and cons of it all. S1 Ep 1231Special Edition: Our 'Space Junk' Problem
What happens to the stuff we send to space when it breaks or collides with something else? A lot of it turns into what's often referred to as 'space junk.' There are thousands of pieces of junk orbiting Earth all the time. Just this week, one of those pieces - an old rocket - crashed into the moon. There was no major impact on Earth from that rocket part but other space junk could be more of a threat. Today I'm joined by renowned space environmentalist and astrodynamicist Dr. Moriba Jah from the University of Texas. He's credited with developing the world's first crowd-sourced tool to better track objects in space. He's also the co-founder and chief scientist for Privateer Space, a company working to monitor satellites and debris in Earth's orbit like never before. We spoke with Dr. Jah just before the rocket hit the moon. He told us space junk is a much bigger problem than that one rocket and has the power to disrupt not only our future in space, but life here on Earth. Ukraine's leader has called on everyone to fight back, turning civilians into soldiers. To help us better understand this conflict and how it impacts the rest of the world, we are speaking with Dr. Fred Kagan. He's a scholar and the director of the Critical Threats Projects at the nonpartisan think tank American Enterprise Institute. He has won the prestigious Medal for Distinguished Public Service from the U.S. Defense Department. And, his expertise dates back more than 30 years, from when he got his Ph.D. in Russian and Soviet military history at Yale University. We talked to him about Russia's invasion strategy, the possible damage to the Ukrainian people, and whether he thinks Russia will pose an even bigger threat to the rest of Europe.
