From the publisher

The New World Pictures Podcast is dedicated to every movie released by New World Pictures. We talk about the things we loved and the things we hated along with the detailed history of each film's history and production. Founded by the infamous Roger Corman, New World Pictures was responsible for the greatest genre and exploitation films of the 1970's and 1980's. Remember all those movies that lived proudly in the Action, Horror, Comedy and Sci-Fi isles of the video store? Titles like Death Race 2000, Hellraiser, Heathers and Piranha. They were all made by New World Pictures. In addition to talking about the films themselves, we talk with the Writers, Producers and Directors who worked with New World Pictures.

Nearly New World: Capone

This week on the New World Pictures Podcast, we explore the “hills” of Chicago as seen in this action crime feature 1975's CAPONE, a movie New World Pictures nearly released! Join us as we analyzing its unique (and questionable) perspective and the overwhelming number of characters, spoiler alert, most of whom are barely introduced! Starring Ben Gazzara (SAINT JACK) as a both young and old Al Capone (though, mostly old), Sylvester Stallone (DEATH RACE 2000) as a young and alive Frank Nitti, Susan Blakely as the true Lord of Flatbush, and the greatest name to ever exist in Hollywood, Royal Dano (HOUSE II: THE SECOND STORY) as short term Chicago Mayor Anton J Cermak! If you love film deep dives into syphilis (and, really, who doesn't?!) and have always wanted to learn more about Marc's eclectic work history, leading into a surprisingly detailed and entertaining look behind the scenes into the pros and cons of being a newspaper delivery boy, from early mornings to the realities of the industry, then you won't want to miss a single minute of this episode. 6th Annual Roger Corman Birthday Celebration featuring Kier-La Janisse

Now in it's sixth year, we celebrate Roger Corman's birthday by watching films from his directing history, and this year, we brought in a special guest: filmmaker and author Kier-La Janisse! Kier-La is a badass! Not just because she wrote the book House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films, or because she directed and produced the documentary WOODLANDS DARK AND DAYS BEWITCHED: A HISTORY OF FOLF HORROR, or even her work for Severin as an editor and producer of special features, but because she joined us from her home in Canada where a windstorm had knocked out her power! Armed with her cellphone and a lantern, she discussed her Roger Corman film selection and discussed her new book, Cockfight: A Fable of Failure, which examines the 1974 Monte Hellman film COCKFIGHTER released by New World Pictures! They discuss why Kier-La decided to write a book about COCKFIGHTER, why Monte Hellman didn't want her to write one, and the difficulty of getting Ed Begley, Jr. to do an interview! All that plus much, much more, including Roger Corman movie picks from Marc, Erica, and Ryan! What did they choose? You'll have to listen to find out! Happy birthday, Roger! Order Kier-La's book here: https://spectacularoptical.com/product-category/publications/. Or here: https://www.fabpress.com/. Ep. 170: Dangerous Affection

E

To close out #MarchMadness 2: Let's Get Nuts, we had to go to the Light - Judith Light - with this made-for-TV movie co-starring an incredible cast of TV stars: Rhea Perlman (Cheers) and Jimmy Smits (L.A. Law)! Yes, we lost our minds watching DANGEROUS AFFECTION aka STAMP OF A KILER (as New World would release it on VHS), a New World Television production that stars Light as a pregnant children's book author (and illustrator, apparently) whose son happens upon a stamp that has secret plans imposed on it though the magic of 1980s computer technology! This makes her the target of a killer played by Michael Parks (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN) who may be lethal but his planning is not!In this episode we talk about the dangers of friendship's affection, the importance of blending in, and a brand-new culinary creation that is sweeping the Seattle food scene! Oh, hey, about that last part, we should warn you, even though we are talking about a TV movie, don't listen to this episode with your kids! (Also, do you usually listen to this podcast with your kids? How does that work? Let us know, will you?)For more about the New World Pictures Podcast, including previous episodes, t-shirts, mugs, sweatshirts, other merch and more, we DARE YOU to head here: https://newworldpicturespodcast.com/For all the shows in Someone’s Favorite Productions Podcast Network, head here: https://www.someonesfavoriteproductions.com/

Ep. 169: Crazy Mama

We continue the madness of #MarchMadness 2: Let's Get Nuts! with a movie that pretty much everyone involved in the making didn't like. We're talking about 1975's CRAZY MAMA - a sort of sequel to BIG BAD MAMA and BLOODY MAMA. According to that argument, any movie with MAMA in it is also a sequel.CRAZY MAMA stars Academy Award winner, Cloris Leachman and two people from HAPPY DAYS - Donny Most (Ralph Malph) and Linda Purl (Gloria in the earlier episodes and Ashley in the later years). Dick Miller also has a role which is worth noting because he makes everything good. Originally titled, CRAZY MAMAS, the movie revolves around a family of women who after losing their hair salon decide to take a road trip to Arkansas where they plan to reclaim their family farm. How about that for a plot summary. We're looking at you, Letterboxd. CRAZY MAMA is part road trip movie, part action movie, part comedy movie. We try to dissect what this movie wants to be. Marc provides instructions on what NOT to do when playing at a craps table. Erica shows off how cute she is in the most unusual way. Both Ryan and Marc pick the shortest, most obscure scene as their favorites and Erica shares that while growing up in the Midwest, she thought everyone in LA wore Drug Rugs or "Bajas" for some of you. Our studio audience makes a big appearance on this one and we want to thank them for their support and generosity. Also, we don't have a studio audience.

Ep. 168: Maniac!

E

We kick off #MarchMadness 2: Let's Get Nuts! with a movie that has many titles: MANIAC!, ASSAULT ON PARADISE, THE TOWN THAT CRIED TERROR, and RANSOM! At one point in time, Roger Corman released the film with all these titles but kept the story the same: Oliver Reed (THE BROOD) goes to town to stop a madman (Paul Koslo, THE ANNIHILATORS) who is intent on killing a rich land owner (Stuart Whitman from New World's CRAZY MAMA) unless he coughs up millions of dollars! But will Reed's cool jacket help him catch this crossbow-wielding seeker of revenge? Aiding in the hunt is a local reporter played by Deborah Raffin (GOD TOLD ME TO), and a local tracker aptly named Tracker, played by James Mitchum of the MItchum family (and New World's BLACKOUT). We discuss the film's history, the different versions available, and how Corman added and subtracted from the film when he released the film in 1977. Dies it have one of the best opening scenes ever for a New World movie? Does it have one of the best theme songs ever for a New World movie? Did we love the film maybe? You'll have to listen to find out! Ep. 167: Seven Blows of the Dragon featuring Dirk Marshall

We are saying goodbye to Foreign Film February (or #FFF for the insiders) with a bang (or is it a clang?) with 1972's SEVEN BLOWS OF THE DRAGON and 1972's THE WATER MARGIN. Is this episode the podcast equivalent of a double feature? Not really. You see, some of us watched SEVEN BLOWS OF THE DRAGON and one of us watched THE WATER MARGIN. And while SEVEN BLOWS OF THE DRAGON and THE WATER MARGIN are essentially the same thing except one of them is 35 minutes shorter... and makes even less sense. Joining us is returning guest Dirk Marshall from the VH US podcast (https://www.vh-us.com/), who we normally bring in for his expertise in Canadian films, and figured he would do the same for a movie made in China. We do our best to piece together a considerably complex plot for a movie that should be more fighting and less talking, which is exactly what Roger Corman wanted. In addition to unraveling the plot, Erica delivers blows to the team for incorrect statements and general bossiness. Dirk correctly points out that the nicknames applied to characters in SEVEN BLOWS OF THE DRAGON do little to trigger memory retention for the 100 characters in this movie. He also identifies good nicknames during the episode. Ryan tries his best to get the tracking right for his audio clips. Erica talks about a totally unrelated movie. Guess this episode is a double feature after all. Ep. 166: Amarcord featuring Ali Davis

We continue Foreign Film February, or “FFF” with the King of T&A himself, Federico Fellini! Based on his childhood in Remini, Italy, AMARCORD is a weird blend of memories, characters, and farts! Is it a classy teen film? A condemnation of fascism? A variety of shots of boobs and butts? It's all three and so much more!Joining us is comedian and writer Ali Davis, who has really had to suffer through some of the, should we say, quirkier selections from New World's past, but we thought we would have her join us for some arthouse cinema. Does it pay off? You'll have to listen to find out!We discuss this wild film filled (and filled and filled) with characters and discuss Italian food, growing up in a small town, and the worst way a seaside village could torture it's local blind man. Enjoy as we discuss this slice of classic film, an Academy Award winner that Roger Corman was always proud to have distributed! Ep. 165: Subway to the Stars

We are kicking off another Foreign Film February, or "FFF", which has become a colloquialism at Haus der New World Pictures Podcast. Is that not the case in your home? If it isn't, it's time to start. To kick off the 2026 #FFF, we are talking about 1987's SUBWAY TO THE STARS, a Brazilian drama that, if you looked at the poster, is nowhere close to what you would expect. SUBWAY TO THE STARS explores a talented saxophonist (Vini) who's girlfriend (Nicinha) disappears after they have sex in an automobile junk yard. It should be pointed out, they didn't have sex in one of the cars in the junk yard. They do the nasty on the dirty ground full of oil, antifreeze, and transmission fluid. Given that, it should come as no surprise that Vini goes on a vision quest to find his missing girlfriend. Unfortunately, because he's a young, attractive musician, he does a pretty shit job of looking for her. Instead, he finds a menagerie of people to do the searching for him. Does he find her? If he does, does she stay with him? We don't cover this part in the episode, but that's part of our charmIn addition to talking about SUBWAY TO THE STARS, we revisit our pre-production of Steamin' (the remake of 1985's Steaming) and whether it could be considered for Cannes. We wonder whether Ska is ready to make a musical comeback. Erica champions the need for more horns (saxophones in particular) in movies and music. Marc makes a claim that there is too much saxophone in George Michael's Careless Whispers. Ryan talks about a great time at a Thom Yorke concert. We also talk about SUBWAY TO THE STARS.For all the shows in Someone’s Favorite Productions Podcast Network, head here: https://www.someonesfavoriteproductions.com/

Corman Graduates: Jack Hill Part 6: Sorceress Commentary

We conclude our first Corman Graduates series with our final episode about Jack Hill and his final directorial effort, 1982's SORCERESS! A strange end to his directorial career, Jack's disappointment with the end product left him to take his name off the film and leave the film business altogether. Hill would also never work with Roger Corman again. But is the movie that bad? a success for New World Pictures, this CONAN THE BARBARIAN riff is a podcast favorite around here, so we dig into the film's history and troubled production, not to mention why Pando was included in the hero group, how hats can completely hide your gender, and why it's important to have a clean rug!So find SORCERESS, and press play on the movie and this episode simultaneously to sync this up, as we dive in right away in this episode! Enjoy the history as we enjoy the final film of Jack Hill! For all the shows in Someone’s Favorite Productions Podcast Network, head here: https://www.someonesfavoriteproductions.com/
