EPISODE #30: Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Spinoff and El Camino Review - October 13, 2019
MAILBAG [00:01:43]
- From Ruth: Comment on the Scorsese discussion on the last podcast: I don't think Scorsese is being fair at all towards Marvel movies. Labeling films as "true cinema" or not sets unnecessary limitations. A work of art is a work of art periodtttt-- some are just more basic than others and that's fine. Just because Marvel movies don't go into social commentary and challenge norms (which I would argue against anyway) and whatever other criticism he has doesn't mean it's bad or unworthy of being labeled cinema. Marvel movies serve a completely different purpose, and caters to completely different people/ sides of people, than Scorsese films. One of those purposes is bringing a contrast and balance to the world of cinema. Not every film can be a heavy, thought provoking, emotionally exhausting piece/ a film making feat. Some have to be fluffy so that people can prepare their brains/hearts/voids for the next thing. Also, wouldn't fluffy stuff and Marvel movies just strengthen that of his own? I think that the hyperbole of Marvel movies, the "roller coaster experience" as it were, creates a nice contrast to Scorsese films; the existence of Captain America for example makes things like The Wolf Of Wall Street that much more compelling.
- But anyway... truth or dare? Truth: What's your favourite film soundtrack (if it's not Disney's Tarzan feat. Phil Collins then you're wrong, sorry) Dare: say Scorsese 5x fast
