Desmond Freeman, wanted for the murder of two police officers in August last year, was found and fatally shot by heavily armed police in the Korpunka region of northeast Victoria on 30 March. Freeman had been on the run for more than six months, prompting a massive manhunt involving hundreds of officers, interstate and overseas police, army personnel, and specialised technology including drones and infrared equipment. Police sources indicate Freeman was discovered hiding in a container on a rural property following a tip-off, and was shot dead after officers attempted negotiation.
