S2 Ep 290Curtain Call: All Stars Return to Talk Financial Independence, Fear, and Growth

Well, here we are—for the last time, for now. A couple weeks ago, I wrote an end-of-year letter that functioned like a little “status update” on how I’m feeling moving into 2026. In this episode, I invite back five of my favorite guests for their own check-ins. We talk about: What it feels like to finally pull the “F.I.” rip cord (and whether it “works”) How money changes relationships, and vice versa Marriage between entrepreneurs An economic diagnosis of our present moment Things we’ve changed our minds about in 2025 This felt like the most fitting possible capstone for the year and this chapter of the show. Thank you for tuning in week after week; thank you for being along for the ride as this show has evolved over the years and as I have evolved over the years; thank you for arguing with me in good faith and expanding my worldview; thank you for engaging with this show so earnestly and consistently. Until next time! S2 Ep 289Why We Judge Women’s Spending, What We Hide, & What We’re Afraid to Admit

E

Today’s guest won’t surprise you if you read the introduction to Rich Girl Nation, which recollected the 2018 event that made me think personal finance might not be solely for people with brown bananas and pocket protectors. Lindsey Stanberry, founding editor of Refinery29’s Money Diaries turned media entrepreneur, joins me for the penultimate episode to talk about: Why most conversations about money are really about time What she learned about our culture from monitoring the Money Diaries comments section Leaving a job, even when it means sacrificing financial security for emotional security What’s really driving our “obsession with FI/RE” The dark side of optimization Subscribe to my weekly newsletter: https://moneywithkatie.com/newsletter Get your copy of Rich Girl Nation, one of Barnes & Noble's Best Business Books of 2025: https://www.moneywithkatie.com/rich-girl-nation Transcripts, show notes, resources, and credits at: https://moneywithkatie.com/the_mwk_show/lindsey-stanberry-judge-hide-admit/ — Money with Katie’s mission is to be the intersection where the economic, cultural, and political meet the tactical, practical, personal finance education everyone needs. S2 Ep 288She Retired at 32. Then Came Guilt—and a Moral Crossroads.

Rebecca Herbst reached financial independence at age 32 during the tenuous early days of the pandemic, and volunteered shortly thereafter to be furloughed from her job in commercial real estate—and so began her (extremely) early retirement. But spending her days exactly as she wanted featured an unexpected side effect: guilt. What do you owe to others when you’ve gotten everything you wanted? Rebecca alchemized her sense of duty and founded Yield & Spread. In detail, we cover: What the “FI-lanthropy” pledge entails How she squares the desire to retire early with the idea of “hoarding money” Where Rebecca gives for the highest impact Who donor-advised funds might make sense for, and how they work How to donate appreciated stock, and why it might be preferable to giving cash Subscribe to my weekly newsletter: https://moneywithkatie.com/newsletter Get your copy of Rich Girl Nation, one of Barnes & Noble's Best Business Books of 2025: https://www.moneywithkatie.com/rich-girl-nation Transcripts, show notes, resources, and credits at: https://moneywithkatie.com/the_mwk_show/the-filanthropy-pledge/ — Money with Katie’s mission is to be the intersection where the economic, cultural, and political meet the tactical, practical, personal finance education everyone needs. S2 Ep 287How to End Low Wage Work—Forever

How do you solve a problem like the disconnect between “wages employers are willing to pay” and “wages employees need to survive”? If you’re my guest this week, the answer is: a wage subsidy. Today on the show, I speak with Ben Glasner, an economist with a PhD in public policy and management in search of answers for how to build a fairer economy, about the benefit proposal that he says has two very critical things most proposals of this nature lack: efficient targeting and bipartisan support. We discuss: The significance of the fact that 21 million Americans earn less than $16 per hour, and two-thirds of those workers are women Why other attempts at incentivizing job creation are expensive ($100,000–$200,000 per job) and poorly targeted The target wage and proposed funding structure that Ben and his coauthor believe will minimize or eliminate fraud and make small business hiring more competitive Subscribe to my weekly newsletter: https://moneywithkatie.com/newsletter Get your copy of Rich Girl Nation, one of Barnes & Noble's Best Business Books of 2025: https://www.moneywithkatie.com/rich-girl-nation Transcripts, show notes, resources, and credits at: https://moneywithkatie.com/the_mwk_show/end-low-wage-work-forever/. — Money with Katie’s mission is to be the intersection where the economic, cultural, and political meet the tactical, practical, personal finance education everyone needs. S2 Ep 286Freedom, Capitalism, and America's Missing Revolution

Since I spent last week’s episode detailing the thrilling ins and outs of making your own 2026 financial plan for wealth-maxxing, today I’m taking a hard left turn and interviewing Andrew Hartman, a history professor and the author of Karl Marx in America, a 500-page tome about which he says, and here I quote directly, “My father-in-law told me that he likes the book even though he still doesn’t like Marx.” We talked about: The limitations of theories from the founding Enlightenment thinkbois like Adam Smith, John Locke, and Thomas Paine, which mostly pre-dated industrial capitalism The "gospel of success" as an anesthetic for an uproarious working class who did not go gently from their farms into factories A surprising role for corporations, which have—ironically—done more to "socialize production" than any other modern entity The trap of thinking about class as an "identity," rather than a relationship How wealth inequality creates speculative markets and bubbles Sign up for the December 3 D.I.Y. class and see the Wealth Planner System's new features: https://www.moneywithkatie.myflodesk.com/mwk-2026-planning-party Subscribe to my weekly newsletter: https://moneywithkatie.com/newsletter Get your copy of Rich Girl Nation, one of Barnes & Noble's Best Business Books of 2025: https://www.moneywithkatie.com/rich-girl-nation Transcripts, show notes, resources, and credits at: https://www.moneywithkatie.com/the_mwk_show/freedom-capitalism-missing-revolution. — Money with Katie’s mission is to be the intersection where the economic, cultural, and political meet the tactical, practical, personal finance education everyone needs. S2 Ep 284A Practical Way to Fight for a Brighter Financial Future—Together

E

I sat down with assistant professor of labor studies and author of We Are the Union, Eric Blanc, to discuss: the euphoria and struggle of movement-building as a response to hopelessness, how mid-century suburban development undermined labor power, and why understanding (and wielding) economic leverage is critical. S2 Ep 281Personal Finance is Broken—Can These Economists Fix It?

My guests this week, economic professors John Campbell and Tarun Ramadorai, argue that the financial system itself is a powerful contributor to wealth inequality, and that there are ways to improve it. Their new book, Fixed: Why Personal Finance Is Broken and How to Make It Work for Everyone (out October 21), addresses how the bulk of our financial issues are downstream of poor structural design, not personal shortcomings—and what we can do about it. (00:00): Intro (04:00): 🏁 How our financial system allows the upper middle class to pull away from the lower middle class, even if they start in relatively similar places (26:55): 😈 Why financial firms aren’t incented to make better products, and how “competition” produces services that exploit the human tendency for bad decision making (41:42) 🏡 The unique products in the mortgage market that might actually be underutilized (like ARMs and reverse mortgages) (57:50): 🍼 What John and Tarun would include in a “personal finance starter kit” for every adult (like a Finnish baby box, but for when you’re a baby adult in a predatory system) (01:08:50): 👊 Where the three of us disagreed about who should be providing said starter kit Our show is a production of Morning Brew and is produced by Henah Velez and Katie Gatti Tassin, with our audio engineering and sound design from Nick Torres. S2 Ep 279On Worthwhile Side Hustles, Financial Tradeoffs, & Frustration with American Politicians

In today’s Rich Girl Roundup, we’re discussing a wide range of alternately nerdy and controversial (sometimes both) topics: 🩹 The role of insurance around the fear of impending doom 🏃 When side hustles are worthwhile 🧮 How to calculate opportunity costs when you have both savings and loans as options on the table 🤑 The theoretically rigorous case for wealth taxes 👀 Where the current economic discussion about Trump’s immigration policies is self-defeating ⚖️ Why my perspective on state-run universal services has become complicated by the last six months …and more, including a temporary and especially thrilling new segment called “Airing Your Grievances.” Transcripts, show notes, resources, and credits will be available within a week at: http://moneywithkatie.com/side-hustles-tradeoffs. — Money with Katie’s mission is to be the intersection where the economic, cultural, and political meet the tactical, practical, personal finance education everyone needs. S2 Ep 271How Other Countries Used Their Darkest Hour to Radically Reform Their Economies

Why don’t things in the US feel like they work the way that they should? Why does life feel so much harder than it would need to be, between exorbitant costs of housing, draining healthcare expenses, and inequitable access to education? But the problems that plague us aren’t unsolvable, and in fact, other places have solved them with tactics that are within reach. S2 Ep 267How This "Financial Ethicist" Plans for the Future of Retirement

Today's guest, financial professional and author of The Future Poor, Jonathan Grimm, believes the post-1945 version of retirement planning (stockpiling as much cash as possible for 40 years and praying you can leave paid work) isn’t going to work for much longer. But as a financial “ethicist,” Grimm's unique approach centers the social determinants of health and begins from the belief that we should figure out what’s best for people—and work backward from there. S2 Ep 266Ray Dalio on What the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" Means for America's Deficit

Hedge fund founder, author, and one of the top influences in the financial world, Ray Dalio has written about how countries (or, in his parlance, “empires”) find themselves in irreversible doom spirals, covered in depth in his new book, How Countries Go Broke: The Big Cycle. So, I wanted to talk to him about the fiscal hot potato being passed back and forth between the House and the Senate that threatens to explode our deficit past the point of no return. His message is clear: “I don’t care who’s right or wrong, but this is what needs to happen now if we want to avoid disaster.” Transcripts, show notes, resources, and credits can be found at: https://moneywithkatie.com/status-power-economy — Money with Katie’s mission is to be the intersection where the economic, cultural, and political meet the tactical, practical, personal finance education everyone needs. The economic uncertainty of March 2020 inspired me to think about what I really wanted to do with my life—and Money with Katie was born. Now in the midst of another bout of uncertainty, I wanted to cover the fundamentals of financial planning and the flexibility that can unlock for you to get closer to your dream life. The last time JL Collins joined me on the show (our most popular episode ever), we covered everything from millennial challenges, to his “VTSAX and Relax” approach, to lessons from his 2015 best-selling book, The Simple Path to Wealth. Now re-released a decade later with new insights, JL joins us again and we talk about: If the US Dollar still holds its reserve currency status—and what it means if it doesn't America’s student loan crisis and the myth of “good debt” The liberation of dramatically downsizing your living expenses Our culture of consumerism, and what might replace it We even had a civil dispute about capitalism (I’ll let you guess who played defense) and whether billionaires create jobs or jobs create billionaires Transcripts, show notes, production credits, and more can be found at: http://moneywithkatie.com/jl-collins. — 📙 Preorder your copy of Rich Girl Nation (out 6/10), and receive 3 free book bonuses! S2 Ep 255A $5,000 Baby Bonus, Birth Rates, and...the Manosphere?

E

Can you pay people to have kids? On one hand, countries that have beefed up social safety nets and pay people to procreate often see short-term success. But long-term results have been remarkably consistent worldwide: It’s very hard to pay people to have children. My guest, writer Meagan Day, joins me today to discuss the recent birth rate data, the growing appeal of opt-out fantasies proffered by both tradwife influencers and the manosphere alike, and what our leaders would be wise to consider—beyond a one-time baby bonus. S2 Ep 254The $175K Factory Worker: What Happens When Employees Own Stock

Given private equity’s reach (1 in 25 work for a business owned by a PE firm), the industry has the power to shape work culture at scale, for better or for worse. And ironically, that’s exactly why Pete Stavros, co-head of global private equity for KKR, thinks he’s in a unique position to bring employee ownership to the mainstream. Pete’s goal? To dramatically expand the number of Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) that grant ownership shares to workers: “Imagine how different our economy and our country would be if workers owned a slice of every company in America.” Transcripts, show notes, production credits, and more can be found at: https://moneywithkatie.com/esops. S2 Ep 251Money, Fashion, and the Aesthetics of Class Politics

When I met Véronique Hyland, author of the bestselling book Dress Code and ELLE’s fashion features director, about how fashion intersects with politics, gender, and class (and the person who coined the term ‘millennial pink’!), I wanted to talk to her about: 👊🏼 The role of aesthetics in labor movement-building and persuasion campaigns, from tradwife influencers to union leaders 🎽 Why one-size-fits-all flammable crop top brand Brandy Melville also sells literature about libertarian economic policy 💰 What current income and consumption trends—like that almost 50% of all consumption is driven by the top 10% of earners—might portend for fashion trends like “underconsumption” 🥂 And finally, how the time-honored fascination with mimicking “upper class” dress reveals the underlying assumption that the only way to have (or look like you have) a nice life, is to be rich Transcripts, show notes, production credits, and more can be found at: https://moneywithkatie.com/fashion. S2 Ep 250Why Economist Kathryn Edwards is Optimistic About America’s Future

2025’s financial news cycle feels like a broken wind-up doll, where recession indicators, unemployment numbers, inflation data, and tax cuts are #JustTheTip of an unsettling iceberg. So, this week, we’re joined by economist Kathryn Edwards (aka “Keds Economist”), and I got to ask her about: 🧠 The no-brainer policy with a huge ROI that nobody’s talking about ✂️ The fundamental flaw with using tax policy (read: tax cuts) to stimulate growth 🇺🇸 Her honest POV on America’s economic outlook and “recession-proofing” a household 👊🏼 The limits of “empowerment” rhetoric, which often tries to use cultural or social nudging to solve problems that simply require money Transcripts, show notes, production credits, and more can be found at: https://moneywithkatie.com/economic-future. S2 Ep 249Is This Simple Idea the Solution for America's Wealth Inequality?

It’s easy to point out that wealth inequality in America is a problem. It’s much harder to identify realistic fixes. But what if there were a simple, elegant solution? In today’s episode, I’m speaking with Matt Bruenig, a former National Labor Relations Board lawyer and policy expert who’s one of the brightest minds in this space. It’s hard to believe, but somehow it’s already time for another Rich Girl Roundup about our last three deep dives: The Real Cost of Being a Working Parent, to which Rich Dad Nation had a decidedly mixed response How Home Insurance and Climate Change are Upending the Real Estate Market, which introduced some good questions about the role of everything from technology to sabotage in effecting change The Truth About “Government Waste,” Privatizing Public Goods, & Turning Citizens into Customers, which generated an absolute treasure trove of stories from government workers We’ll give y’all one guess which generated the lion’s share of emails—this batch of feedback had a surprising amount of tea, so don’t miss it. S2 Ep 247The Truth about "Government Waste," Privatizing Public Goods, & Turning Citizens into Customers

For years, I’ve referenced the book The Privatization of Everything as a seminal work in my understanding of the relationship between government and the private sector. So given the recent DOGE of it all, it seemed like a great time to revisit this conversation—now with one of its authors, Donald Cohen. We discuss the role privatization plays in government waste, and who stands to gain from the transformation of public funds into private wealth. (Hint: It’s not the public!) S2 Ep 246How Home Insurance and Climate Change are Upending the Real Estate Market

The average middle class family has 67% of their net worth tied up in its primary residence. But there’s one looming issue: Rising insurance rates and climate change are threatening those property values—and they might be the canary in the coal mine of the American Dream. We’re joined by Dr. Jeremy Porter, author of the First Street report at the center of most recent insurance analyses. We discuss insurers pulling out of “high-risk” states, “insurers of last resort” in those states, climate-driven migration patterns we’re already seeing, and how this is likely to play out over the next few decades. So yes, this episode is about real estate, insurance, and climate risk—but it’s also about the assumptions underpinning wealth in America, and what it means if they’re changing. E

It's our first newly revamped Rich Girl Roundup of 2025, and we’re taking you on a scenic guided tour of the chatter spurred from recent episodes: our most contentious episode to date, one that generated moving revelations from listeners, and the two-part series that ended up being less polarizing than we expected. S2 Ep 242The Economics of Weight Loss Drugs, Thinness, and Class Signaling

We’ve all heard about Ozempic. But there are the GLP-1s we colloquially call “Ozempic” (see also: Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound) and then there’s the cultural role of Ozempic. Given the price of these drugs, barriers to access, and class implications of weight stigma, this topic presents a unique opening to talk about inequality in health outcomes and the profitable business of individualizing social problems. In part one of this rare two-part series, we’re covering: The wage penalties associated with (and relationship between) weight and women, and the parallels between the American attitudes about thinness and wealth The Danish pharma company that put Europe’s entire economy on its back A conversation with a 12-year veteran of drug and device advocacy who said some of the surrounding issues represent, and I quote, “everything wrong with health policy in our country,” especially given the shortages, costs, and online pharmacies springing up to bridge that gap with non-FDA-approved solutions Let’s take a peek at the inside the business of weight loss drugs, and join us here next week for part two. S2 Ep 240Why This Finance Expert Says You Don't Need to Budget

Most personal finance advice falls into one of two camps: one that implicitly assumes that humans need discipline, control, and punishment, and the other that says people are fundamentally good, reasonable, and worthy of trust and confidence. So when I read Dana Miranda's You Don't Need a Budget and realized her system was in that latter bucket, it challenged my own ideas of "budget culture" and what trusting yourself with money might actually look like. Dana joins us on the show today to talk through it all. Transcripts, show notes, production credits, and more can be found at: https://moneywithkatie.com/budget-culture.
