Good morning! I'm Aaron Jolly. And welcome to the Mississippi Weather Podcast — it's Tuesday, February 24th.
Step outside right now and you'll feel winter's last bite. Temperatures are in the 20s across the state.. But here's the thing. By 3 P.M., you'll hit 60 degrees. That's a 30-degree swing in a single day.
Central Mississippi starts you at 28 degrees around 5 A.M. The sun comes out, winds flip to the south. And by 3 P.M. You're at 60. That's frost to flip-flops territory. Early morning feels like 28 around 8 A.M., even as the actual temperature climbs to 33. Tonight stays mild, dipping only to 45.
Down along the Gulf Coast, you wake up to 34 degrees around 5 A.M. Feels more like 29 with that northeast breeze. By 3 P.M., you're at 56 — cooler than inland thanks to that marine influence. Winds shift from northeast to east around 9 A.M. Tonight stays balmy near 50.
Up in Northern Mississippi, the cold lingers longest. Lows hit 21 degrees around 6 A.M. But the rebound is just as dramatic — 56 degrees by 4 P.M. Tonight drops to 41 with south winds at 10 miles an hour.
Now here's where it gets wild. Wednesday brings low 70s. Thursday? A cold front sweeps through with showers and thunderstorms — some potentially strong, especially up north. Up to three-quarters of an inch of rain could fall. Highs stay warm ahead of the front at mid-70s, then cool slightly to upper 60s Friday. The weekend delivers more warmth — mid-70s Saturday and Sunday under sunny skies.
One heads up. With dry air and breezy conditions today, fire danger is elevated west of the Natchez Trace. Avoid outdoor burning if you can.
We're gaining nearly 2 minutes of daylight each day now. Sunrise today at 6:35 A.M., sunset at 5:55 P.M. Spring is knocking.
That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow.
