But as my wise friend, Andra Pinkston, points out on today’s episode at The Messy Table: “We spend the next month overspending, overeating, and overcommitting ourselves—then we expect to fix it all in January.” But, instead, what if we put ourselves on the offensive vs. the defensive? What if we prepare our hearts + minds to create life-giving boundaries, pursue financial freedom, and still cultivate a meaningful Christmas without breaking the bank? “Jesus’ sacrifice was too great for us to live an enslaved life.” —Andra Pinkston Andra is a pastor’s wife, boy-mama of three, work-from-home CPA, and a homeschooling mastermind. Welcome to The Messy Table! An imperfect space for real women, imperfect stories, and the God who’s at work in our mess. And guess what? Today’s episode with my good friend, Tina LaTurno, is no different. “Your past will never not be your past, but you can choose your future.” —Tina LaTurno Tina and her sweet family have been in the face of suffering throughout the past several years, as her husband Charlie has weathered through severe health issues. BUT THEY HAVE NOT GIVEN UP. Tina is a mom, pastor’s wife, and follower of Christ. She’s a bundle of energy and incredibly ornery, as well as one of the most servant-hearted people I know. She reminds us that REGARDLESS of what we face, through Christ we can win the day. By His strength we can keep going. EP. 25 | Sandra Stanley [Breathing Room]
Welcome to The Messy Table—an ordinary space for real women, imperfect stories, and the God who’s at work in our mess. Today, for Episode 25, Amy Groeschel and I are chatting with the absolutely charming Sandra Stanley—who is simply a breath of fresh air. Sandra is the mom of three grown children, wife to Andy Stanley—founder of North Point Ministries, a foster mama + advocate for kids from hard places, and an author of two devotional books: Comparison Trap and Breathing Room (see GIVEAWAY details below). She is super down-to-earth and has the most soothing southern accent. Trust me, I could’ve chatted with her for DAYS. “The shortcut to contentment is a heart of gratitude.” —Sandra Stanley This conversation is packed with all of the topics mentioned above, as well as how to navigate various seasons of life/marriage/motherhood and the learned wisdom that comes with facing challenges. We also highlight two really important issues, especially among women, like (1) the never-ending trap of comparison, and (2) the temptation to constantly overextend ourselves—leaving little to zero breathing room. I didn’t realize how much I needed this conversation until it happened! You’ll love it too, I promise. So grab your coffee, pull up a chair, and join us at The Messy Table. EP. 24 | Ruth Russo [Daring to Trust]
Welcome to The Messy Table—an ordinary space for real women, imperfect stories, and the God who’s at work in our mess. Today’s guest is my gorgeous friend, Ruth Russo, who is even more stunning on the inside. She’s a pastor’s wife, mama of three, and one of the most genuine, compassionate, and faith-filled women I know. But that doesn’t mean trusting God comes easily to her (or to any of us), especially when life gets scary and uncertain. “Courage is doing it scared.” —Jill Briscoe In this episode, Ruth divulges the traumatic way in which she discovered that her oldest daughter had type 1 diabetes, as well as what it’s like—as a mother—adapting to and journeying through such massive life-changes. Ruth also explains why she and her husband recently packed up their house, uprooted their family, and moved to a new state. She’s daring to trust God with everything she has and invites us to do the same. So grab your coffee, pop in those earbuds, and join us at The Messy Table! EP. 23 | Shanna Crawford [Scandalous Grace]
The Messy Table is an ordinary and unforced space for real women, imperfect stories, and the God who’s at work in our mess. For Episode #23, Amy Groeschel is joining me in the co-hosting chair as we chat with Shanna Crawford, an amazing woman from our Life.Church Sisters ministry who has a radical—even scandalous—story. Shanna and her husband, Jerome, are the visionaries and cofounders of a ministry called Komeo, which is focused on caring for a specific group of orphans in Sierra Leone, Africa. She’s also the biological and adoptive mama to a slew of awesome kids, a seasonal missionary, and a lover + teacher of God’s word. That all sounds precious and sacrificial, doesn’t it? But as we know, there’s a messy story behind every pretty picture. There’s a messy story behind every pretty picture. If you met Shanna today and heard about her passionate love for the Lord, you would have NO IDEA she’s been freed from the chains of abuse, drugs, and her past life as a stripper. God—in his mercy—pursued Shanna, just as he pursues you, and brought her from a place of extreme darkness to illuminating light. Her story is loaded with the scandalous grace of the redeeming gospel and, trust me, you do not want to miss it! Happy New Year, friends! Welcome back to The Messy Table—where life isn’t perfect, but God is at work in the mess. Well, the table has finally turned. Some of my lovely (yet stubborn) friends have been hounding me to take a turn in the hot seat since the launch of this podcast, nearly ten months ago. So today—for the first episode of 2018—you get to hear a bit of my heart, passion, and imperfect story behind The Messy Table, as well as where we’re headed in the future. Life is messy, but God is good. The amazing LaTonya Pratt, who was my guinea pig for Episode #1, is calling the shots and getting a taste of sweet revenge in the hosting chair. EP. 21 | Lindsay Torres [#MeToo]
Christmastime is typically festive and cozy, merry and bright. But there’s a heavier side of the holidays that many people, unfortunately, know all too well. My guest for today’s episode at The Messy Table is the witty and bighearted Lindsay Torres—who’s bravely shedding some light on her #MeToo story, as well as sharing how she continues to find healing and forgiveness after sexual abuse. “God takes a mess and makes a masterpiece.” —Lindsay Torres Lindsay is a mom of two boys, police officer’s wife, pharmaceutical rep, and just a down-to-earth, hilarious, she’ll-have-your-back-no-matter-what type of friend. I can’t imagine the pain she’s waded through over the years, but it’s an honor to witness the mysterious way in which “God takes a mess and makes a masterpiece.” No matter your story or background, Lindsay’s imperfect journey will remind you who you are and shift your perspective toward the things of God. Today marks the TWENTIETH episode at The Messy Table (insert allllll the praise-hand emojis)! I want to start by shouting a gigantic THANK YOU to all of my amazing guests who have bravely opened up their lives and souls on this little podcast, for the sake of encouraging others and reminding us just how faithful our God is—even in the messes of life. I also want to thank YOU for coming alongside of us on this adventure. Grateful doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel, but I’m humbled and expectant for all that’s still to come. So, thank you! I couldn’t think of a better way to commemorate this milestone than by inviting some of my precious friends to join me in the celebration! Today’s conversation with Kristi Ivey, Lindsay McKee, Lacye Stewart, Ashley Clinesmith, and Kat Robinson (aka The Village) is rich! We chat about how to sustain friendships as adults and how to keep Jesus front and center during an otherwise commercial Christmas, as well as heavier topics like wading through foster care, infertility, and marriage struggles. There’s loads of wisdom and insight pouring from these women, which has been gained through various experiences in various seasons of life. “We know that, at any moment, we could call each other up and be at each other’s doorsteps—which has happened.” Since December officially kicks off tomorrow, we’re running into the Christmas season with a super fun GIVEAWAY! EP. 19 | Amanda Taylor [Fighting Through Postpartum Psychosis]
Happy (almost) Thanksgiving, y’all! I can’t wait to enjoy my favorite people and pumpkin EVERYTHING. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” Sounds great, right? In theory. But how do we give thanks for the miserable, awful, hard stuff that life can sometimes throw at us? My guest for Episode #19 at The Messy Table is Amanda Taylor, and I can’t think of anyone better to shed some light on just how we can be grateful in every situation, both good and bad. “No suffering is purposeless.” —Amanda Taylor Amanda is a pastor’s wife, mom of five (plus one on the way), owner of a wedding-planning business called Embellished Weddings, and woman after the heart of God. Almost five years ago, smack the midst of having a newborn in the NICU and three young children at home, this steady wife and mama found herself chained to the floor in a phychiatric hospital. Never in her worst nightmare did she imagine having to fight through something as rare and difficult as postpartum psychosis. In this conversation, Amanda and I chat about finding joy in the trenches of suffering and fighting for what matters most. EP. 17 | Britton Bill [Going Beyond Surface Level]
The latest episode from The Messy Table is hot off the press (and one day early due to Fall Break)! This is fantastic news because: (1) I could use a midweek pick-me-up right about now, and (2) life is JUST BETTER with Britton Bill. Britton is wife to Isaiah, mama to sweet Blaine, a pastor at Life.Church, and one of my very favorite people. We carved out some time for her to come over—she picked up Starbucks and I reheated some chocolate chip pumpkin bread from LifeGroup the night before. We chatted about life and what she’s been learning, as well as tackled some questions we’re all asking ourselves: How can I go deeper in my relationships? How do I get beyond surface level and beneath the superficial? How in the world do we discern God’s will in the face of tough decisions? “We can’t grow without getting uncomfortable.” —Britton Bill It’s good, y’all. Reminders I need this very day! Life isn’t perfect, but God is doing important work. So whether you’re driving, getting some exercise, taking a break from work, folding laundry, sitting in the carpool line, or hiding in the bathroom from your toddler—grab (or reheat) your coffee, pull up a chair, and join us! Who are you—really? What defines you? Is it your job, your family, your house, your education, your ability, your relationship status, your social-media following? Ellie is a successful wedding photographer by day (Ellie Be Photography), but she’s leaning into God’s deeper purpose for her life—not just in what she does, but in who she is. We’re talking about the secret to stepping into your true identity with boldness, obedience, and purpose in this passion-filled episode. Honestly, I need to listen to it at least two or three more times to really let it marinate. Also, I’m obsessed with Ellie’s voice—so soothing! Alright, y’all. Grab your coffee, pull up a chair, and make yourself comfy at The Messy Table—where life isn’t perfect, but God is at work in the mess. Today’s guest happens to be my sweet friend and my pastor’s wife, Amy Groeschel. Life isn’t perfect, but God is at work in the mess. There are a million things I could say about Amy: She co-founded Life.Church with her hubby, Craig, over twenty-one years ago. She home-educates her six kids (which deserves its own award in my book). She encourages women by getting important, Spirit-led words down on paper for the world to read. She heads up the women’s ministry at Life.Church, founded a non-profit housing ministry, and is a voice + advocate for foster care. She says things, she writes things, she leads things. Basically, her life is sad and boring and completely uneventful. Okay, maybe not. It’s true that Amy wears a TON of different hats, but I’m mostly grateful for her sincere passion and generous heart. She loves God, she loves people, and—I’m here to tell you—she lives what she preaches. Wise and witty (though not perfect of course), SHE IS THE REAL DEAL. Today’s guest is my good friend, Gina Postier—a wife, mama of four, physician assistant, and believer in God’s faithfulness. In this episode, Gina shares a piece of her journey to motherhood, which involved multiple seasons and (eventually) multiple kids. After a long and intensive road of infertility, adoption, and a few surprises along the way, she’s here to tell you that GOD WASTES NOTHING. “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” Proverbs 16:9 Whether you have kids, or not. Whether you’ve wrestled through infertility/adoption, or not. Nicole is not only a food-allergy blogger, heath coach, pastor’s wife, mama of three, and a creative genius in the kitchen—but she’s also no stranger to adversity. Have you ever faced something really, really difficult? Have you wondered if you could get through it? If you would live to see the other side? Here on The Messy Table podcast, we like to peel back the surface-level layers of the highlight reel to get a glimpse at real life. Like other amazing women who have done great things, Nicole’s sweat and tears are weaved into the story behind the glory. “We’re not perfect people, but we’re just letting God use us.” —Nicole Dawson In this episode, Nicole shares her personal account of how God’s been faithful—even through a painful first marriage, a challenging season of single-parenting, an agonizing wait after following what she thought was God’s call, and the stressful diagnosis of her youngest son’s life-threatening food allergies. She reminds us that God specializes in bringing good things out of hard situations, no matter how messy. So grab your coffee, pull up a chair, and join us at The Messy Table. EP. 7 | Tanner Cangelosi [Surprise Triplets + Messy Mamahood]
Solve this riddle: How can 3 solo pregnancies + 1 more pregnancy = a family of 8? In honor of Mother’s Day, I want to introduce you to one of the most adorable, hilarious, faith-filled, and graciously wise mama’s around. My friend Tanner Cangelosi and her husband had three kids, decided to go for a fourth, and ended up expecting triplets. TRIPLETS! Conceived naturally, without fertility, resulting in SIX beautiful children—five and under. This is such a fun episode, y’all. EP. 6 | Kacie Frazier [The Road to Redemption]
Remember when my worship pastor, Brandon Frazier, performed a chillingly powerful rendition of “Million Reasons” for our current Life.Church series, Playlist? His passion echoed through our souls as he vulnerably presented his story as well—how he almost lost everything due to a secret alcohol addiction. But God. God didn’t give up on him, and his life is now a living example of the grace that’s found in Jesus. Well, BEFORE he was asked to record that song/video and share a piece of His redemptive story, his adorable wife and I had already scheduled to chat about some hard + important stuff at The Messy Table. As usual, God’s timing is never what I expect—but it’s always better. In this episode, Kacie Frazier courageously opens up her heart—as well as the doors to their lives—to give us a raw peek into their journey of brokenness, forgiveness, healing, and restoration. The story behind the story, if you will. God’s story of redemption. “It’s your story, God. It happened to us, but it’s your story.” Kacie Frazier Kacie is a wife to one, mama of two, foundation coordinator for our local children’s hospital, and she leads worship beside her husband every weekend. She’s fiery, eloquent, strong, and compassionate. She had a million reasons to walk away, but only needed one good ONE to stay. You do NOT want to miss the power and wisdom in this episode! So grab some coffee, pull up a chair, and join us at The Messy Table. She touched the fringe of his robe, for she thought, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” Jesus turned around, and when he saw her he said,“Daughter, be encouraged! Your faith has made you well.”And the woman was healed at that moment.” Matthew 9:20-22 Feel free to connect with Kacie via Instagram @kacienicole. EP. 5 | Ashley Armstrong [Faith, Fitness, and Raising the Mighty Finn]
I’M WRITING IN ALL CAPS TO SHOW YOU JUST HOW ECSTATIC I AM ABOUT THIS CONVERSATION! But really. My friend Ashley Armstrong is a personal trainer, health nut, fellow pastor’s wife, and mama of two. But more than that? She’s steady in hope, fierce in passion, and genuine in character. In this episode, Ashley and I chat about what it looks like when faith and fitness collide, as well as what it’s like to be Supermom to the Mighty Finn—who happens to drive a wheelchair. One thing I admire about Ashley is how she openly wears her heart on her sleeve, sharing both the joys + challenges of raising a child with special needs and wrestling through God’s sovereignty. “My idea of perfection has shifted. My idea of what it means for a human to be formed perfectly has shifted—because I think my idea of perfection is very flawed.” Ashley Armstrong There’s loads of wisdom to glean from this spiritually- and physically-fit guru! So grab some coffee, pull up a chair, and join us at The Messy Table. CONVERSATION NOTES + RESOURCES How to Treat Kids Who Are Different: Part I and Part II by Ashley Armstrong. EP. 2 | Kat Robinson [Trusting God With Our Kids]
Well—we did it! We got past the scary first podcast and are on to the next. Thank you to everyone who took time to listen, share encouraging words, and join the conversation. If you happened to miss Episode #1 with LaTonya Pratt, you REALLY MISSED OUT. But there’s good news: You can still go back and catch up, which is one of those handy-dandy perks of modern technology. And TODAY you get to hear from another fabulous and fiery friend of mine. Kat Robinson is a wife to one, mama of three, and dabbler in a bit of everything—from loving her babies to leading worship to raising chickens to interior design to vlogging “pep talks” to DIY projects. In this episode, Kat and I chat about some “how to’s:” How to have adult friendships, how to trust God with your kids, how to worship in the middle of a mess, and how to improve your life by playing in the dirt. There also might be a confession or two… I’m telling ya, you will be BETTER OFF after hearing from her today and I truly pray that some part of our conversation speaks to your life in a real way. I am realizing more than ever just how much we need each other—our unique perspectives, individual stories, and unconditional love. So c’mon! Grab some coffee, pull up a chair, and join us at The Messy Table. EP. 1 | LaTonya Pratt [Choosing to be Present]
Do you know what I love? Podcasts. I’m a big fan of books and blogs, but it’s tough to read when I’m on the move—just as it is for you I assume. Podcasts, on the other hand, are something we cal all listen to while running. Running errands, running reports, running carpool, running the dishwasher, or literally running our feet on the hard pavement. Do you know what else makes my heart beat fast? A messy table. The kind where I’m huddled over a plate of pastry crumbs with a friend at a local coffee shop. Or brainstorming with someone creative at a scattered desk. Or lost in conversation with my family over a non-fancy dinner. I’m a firm believer in the value and sacredness of a messy table. That unforced and imperfect space where we look each other in the eyes and laugh and create and eat and ask the hard questions and simply be. Well guess what? Two of my favorites are colliding today and YOU are invited to join me. Grab some coffee and pull up a chair because one of my best friends, LaTonya Pratt, is in the house (my house exactly). I realize that her adorable family looks like a Gap advertisement up there, but they are actually regular, down-to-earth people who happen to resemble supermodels. Don’t be scared. In this first episode of The Messy Table podcast, LaTonya and I tackle topics like balancing work and family, choosing “Present Over Perfect,” coping with death and tragedy, and daring to live an intentional life. You might even hear something about our pet peeves, the surprising reason LaTonya quit her job, and what extracurricular activity she and her husband have been doing in bed these days (yep, you read that right). We’re talking real life, real issues, and the real God who’s at work in our mess. LaTonya is a pastor’s wife, mom of three rowdy boys, certified #girlboss, and a fiery ball of wisdom and energy. Trust me, you do NOT want to miss her insight and wit! So pop in those ear buds and have a listen. I promise—you’ll be glad you did.
