About Dr. Alan Gettis - There was something missing. Although he had degrees from four different universities and was schooled in psychodynamic, supportive, and cognitive behavioral therapy, there seemed to be a key ingredient that was lacking in his therapeutic approach to helping others heal and thrive. That was in 1969, when his search for the missing ingredient lead him to studies of world cultures in general and Zen in particular. As the years passed and he became steeped in stories and Zen wisdom, he knew he had uncovered an important method of helping people to get unstuck and feel happier. Yes, Dr. Alan Gettis believes wholeheartedly in the power of stories. Dr. Gettis spent two years as a Vietnam era army psychologist in the late 1960’s. In the 1970’s, he worked for seven years at a large mental health center as the Chief Psychologist. He is a clinical psychologist with graduate degrees from Central Michigan University, Utah State University, and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has been in private practice since 1974. Dr. Gettis' website is: http://www.drgettis.com/. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

About Shirley Enebrad in her own words...Aloha, I am the proud mother of Cory, the wonderful little boy for whom this book was written. He taught me how to live my life with joy, purpose and integrity. His short life and the lessons he shared were a gift to thousands of people worldwide thanks to his loving relationship with Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. He asked me to write this book to help Elisabeth teach people that death is not the end and that we should not be afraid. Cory loved the message in the song "The Rose." Especially the part about "those afraid of dying cannot learn to live..." His courage was astounding. His lessons were and are still profound. But, this book is not about dying...it is about living the life you have been gifted by God. I hope you enjoy the read. I currently live in Washington with my husband Steven, two rambunctious dogs Maile and Koa and our sweet grey kitty boy T.C. (stands for The Cat). We have two beautiful daughters Brie & Keili and my sweet grandson Cory Keawe and we have a hanai daughter named Malia whom we love very much. By profession I am an award-winning television/video producer/writer. I am also a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist. I conduct grief workshops and do grief work with individuals. And, now I am an author! As a volunteer I am the president of Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Western Washington. Formerly I was the Washington State Team Leader for CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation, which focuses on securing research funding for the Children's Oncology Group. (links available on Favorite Links page). I also volunteer with a community organization that promotes the area of Seattle where I reside. When asked, I also help my friends with their volunteer efforts...from drug affected newborns to promoting the arts to young people. My grandfather always said, "help if and when you can." This is something I have instilled in my children. God's blessings and much aloha, Shirley Enebrad Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Emily Warn was born in San Francisco and moved at the age of seven from the then Bohemian neighborhood in Marin, California to the Orthodox Jewish community in Detroit. For Warn, poetry links music and meaning every bit as powerfully and oddly as religious traditions do, inventing complicated, invisible relations. She moved to the Pacific Northwest 1978 to work for North Cascades National Park, and a year later moved to Seattle where she has lived, more or less ever since. She most recently served as the Webby Award winning founding editor of poetryfoundation.org, and now divides her time between Seattle and Twisp, Washington. Warn has published five collections of poetry, including three books: The Leaf Path (1982), The Novice Insomniac (1996) and Shadow Architect (2008), all from Copper Canyon Press, and two chapbooks The Book of Esther (1986) and Highway Suite (1987). Her essays and poems appear widely, including in Poetry, BookForum, Blackbird, Parabola, The Seattle Times, The Writers’ Almanac, The Bloomsbury Review, The Stranger, and Critical Mass the National Book Critics Circle blog. She has taught creative writing or served as writer-in-residence at many schools and arts centers, including Lynchburg College in Virginia, The Bush School in Seattle, Sun Valley Center for the Arts, Centrum Foundation in Port Townsend, and Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico. She was educated at Kalamazoo College and the University of Washington, and was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. She is currently taking a year off from teaching and working to write. Emily has also worked in the high-technology, first at Microsoft where she was a Group Programming Manager for Microsoft.com, and later as web consultant, working for amazon.com, The Methow Conservancy, and Farming and the Environment. Today GUEST HOST Ainslie MacLeod interviewed musician, India Arie. India Arie is known and cherished by fans and fellow musicians as a poet, a songwriter, a daughter, a producer, a musician, a sister, a singer, an advocate, a friend and a philanthropist but she is possibly best known for the love in her music that has inspired and motivated people worldwide. From the moment that her very first single Video, and her multi platinum debut album Acoustic Soul were released in 2001, India's music established an extraordinary bond of trust, affection and communication with her followers. Her sophomore release the platinum selling Voyage to India in 2002 was hailed worldwide by critics. The New York Times called it music that only further enhances her reputation as an artist of substance; centering on her acoustic guitar and confident but restrained vocals, it recalls such soul masters as Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack. Although they’ve been understated, the politics of India Arie’s Grammy honored music have also been on open display ever since Oprah Winfrey pointedly thanked her for writing the sentiment I may not be built like a supermodel/But I’ve learned to love myself unconditionally a declaration of independence from a set agenda that, eight years later, remains as politically definitive as any protest song ever written. Winfrey also singled out the Testimony: Vol. 1 track There’s Hope as music that really stimulates and revives the soul, and India’s music was known to be heard on campaign buses and planes, rallies and fundraisers during the historic Presidential run of Barack Obama. I want people to hear my music for a long time, says India, for this generation to say decades from now: Everybody’s looking for ways to feel better the world is so unpredictable, people are looking inside themselves to ask what’s meaningful in life. My music has always addressed this, and now it’s so much in vibrational accordance with what people are thinking. India.Arie has stood often with her peers in the top echelon of entertainment as an activist for global health and human dignity. As a U.S. Ambassador for UNICEF, she traveled to Africa several times to address the AIDS crisis, and filmed the VH1 documentary Tracking the Monster: Ashley Judd & India.Arie Confront Aids in Africa.
