Anne Lamott is known for her insightful prose and deep spirituality. A best-selling author of more than 15 books, Anne's advice is sought by readers worldwide. Her latest book "Dusk, Night, Dawn" doesn't disappoint as it thoughtfully tackles issues of aging (growth), life, politics and faith. The famously progressive Annie and I go way back, and it was fun to have her join me to talk about her books, her family and how she survived the Trump years. S1 Ep 21S1 / E21 The Food Revolution: A Conversation with Dr. Mark Hyman

A doctor of functional medicine, Dr. Mark Hyman makes clear that healthy food choices are the best way to prevent and in many cases heal disease. But how can we make the best food choices when corporate forces too often conspire against our ability to do so? Hyman's work dives into this topic head-on. I sat down with Mark this week to discuss the history of our food system and how current corruption is accelerating the threats of food-related chronic disease, climate change, poverty, educational achievement gaps and more. Fortunately, he knows how to fix it! With his books and non-profit work, Dr. Mark Hyman is leading a food revolution. S1 Ep 19S1 / E19 Understanding Trauma: A Conversation with Dr. Gabor Maté

Dr. Gabor Maté's approach to working with patients suffering from addiction, stress and trauma has earned him worldwide praise. Maté, author of "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts," stresses that trauma is not what happened to you, but what happens inside you and when this is acknowledged the healing process can begin. In this interview, Gabor and I discuss the larger societal issues that are causing so many stressors, generational trauma, why we develop addictions and the importance of self-compassion. S1 Ep 18S1 / E18 The Spirit of Avatar: A Conversation with James Cameron

With its current re-release in China, the film AVATAR becomes the highest grossing film of all time. That's how much the people of the world are enchanted by the forests of Pandora, the wisdom of the Na'vi, and the drama of the Avatar. All of those emerge from the mind of writer-director James Cameron, known not only for his extraordinary record as a filmmaker (Titanic, the Terminator films, etc.) but also as a deep sea explorer. I was excited to have a chance to sit down for a deep dive conversation with Jim Cameron, covering everything from the mysteries of Avatar to the current state of American capitalism. As he puts it, humanity is on a precipice between being "takers" and being "caretakers." Which we choose will make all the difference. Cameron is one of the geniuses of our time, and it was an honor to get to know him. Today, Picciolini is free of his white supremacist background; he is a leading de-radicalizer of those who remain within its lure. S1 Ep 9S1 / E9 A People's Economy with Stephanie Kelton

From health care to education, policy proposals that do the most to help people live better lives are often met with the question, "But how are you going to pay for it?" That's where Stephanie Kelton - the "people's economist" - comes in. A former Chief Economist on the Senate Budget Committee and Bernie Sanders advisor, Kelton says the money is available to us right now to do everything we need to do to change our society for the better. Why then aren't we spending it? Because, according to Kelton, we've been fed the "deficit myth" - the constant refrain that the only money available is money that will help those who already have a lot of it. Kelton's book "The Deficit Myth: Modern Monetary Theory and the Birth of the People's Economy" turns economic thinking on its head and leaves us hopeful that a compassionate, more equitable society is possible. Hang around after the interview for Ask Marianne: Marianne answers questions about arts in schools and the practice of peace-building. S1 Ep 8S1 / E8 Brain, Heart, Magic: A Conversation with Dr. James Doty

Jim Doty was a self-described juvenile delinquent raised in a violent and dysfunctional home when, at the age of twelve, he wandered into a magic shop and met someone who would change his life. Promising to show him REAL magic, a woman named Ruth would teach him what he later realized were methods of Eastern mysticism and higher consciousness awareness. Applying the techniques she taught him, he would transcend his disadvantaged childhood, go to college against all odds and end up a highly successful neurosurgeon teaching at Stanford University medical school. As a doctor he would learn that the truths Ruth revealed to him as a child are indeed the deepest truths of the human brain and heart. Follow Dr. James R. S1 Ep 7S1 / E7 "Press On, My Sisters": A Conversation with Sue Monk Kidd

Author Sue Monk Kidd is one of Marianne's favorite contemporary novelists. In this episode, Marianne and Sue discuss Sue's books "The Invention of Wings" and her latest, "The Book of Longings." "The Invention of Wings" is based on the historical figures Sarah and Angelina Grimke, sisters born into a slave owning family in Charleston, South Carolina, and then converted to the anti-slavery cause. They ultimately became leading abolitionists and feminists. "The Book of Longings" is Sue's fictional account of what would have happened had Jesus been married - who the woman was, and who he was when he was with her. S1 Ep 6S1 / E6 Why Presidential Transitions Are So Important: A Conversation With Michael Lewis

Michael Lewis takes the most left brain issue and gives it right brain impact. That's exactly what he does in one of Marianne's favorite books, The Fifth Risk. The book has been called "a love letter to federal workers" by the Washington Post. In this episode, Michael and Marianne explore why a presidential transition, or lack thereof, is so critically important. The book's major theme is that "a bungled transition becomes a bungled presidency," a particularly important issue as Trump continues to withhold vital information from the incoming Biden administration. Marianne and Michael discuss the more shocking parts of the 2016/17 transition, and why its lessons are so important for us now and going forward. The two also dive deep into America's dark history while acknowledging its light, what Marianne refers to as the "both and" that's embedded in our country from its founding. S1 Ep 2S1 / E2 The Largest Environmental Disaster You've Never Heard Of

Referred to as the "Amazon Chernobyl," it's the largest environmental disaster that you've probably never heard of… Billions of gallons of toxic waste dumped into the Amazon by American oil company Texaco (now Chevron), leaving indigenous Ecuadorians living in a sea of pollution. Attorney & environmental activist Steven Donziger took on the behemoth, winning a multi-BILLION dollar settlement for the indigenous Ecuadorians. Then the unthinkable happened. Refusing to accept responsibility, Chevron has chosen to go on a years-long attack against Donziger rather than cleaning up the environmental mess it created. Seeking to destroy him personally and professionally, as well as intimidate any other human rights or environmental activists who would come to his defense, Chevron has used legal maneuvering to go so far as to strip Donziger of his passport, freeze his assets, and have him placed under house arrest where he's been for more than a year. Marianne sits down with Steven for a wide-ranging conversation about the disaster in Ecuador, his ordeal and how a corporation can easily twist the judicial system to serve its own needs at the expense of the people. His trial is coming up within days and in a very real sense it pertains to us all. Associate Director of Amazon watch, Paul Paz Y Miño, also joins the show to explain the background of the disaster and Steven's case.
