S5 Ep 730Hegseth: Unfit to Serve
EHegseth: Unfit to ServeThe stupidity of Donald Trump’s cabinet nominations was on full display when Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth was grilled during a Senate confirmation hearing Tuesday. Here’s a guy who says he will be a “change agent” and “warrior” if confirmed, but in the meantime dodged easy questions about his lack of experience, excessive drinking and sexual misconduct, which clearly make him unfit to serve.HIJACKED NATION - Donald Trump's attack on America's greatness. S5 Ep 738Above the Law
ESo now with Judge Juan Merchan letting Donald Trump off the hook for his felony conviction in the New York Stormy Daniels hush money case, he’s effectively been placed above the law. Yes, many pundits claim victory of sorts because Merchan upheld Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, making Trump officially a convicted felon. We’re supposed to be satisfied with that? Not long ago Trump faced four criminal trials and perhaps years behind bars. Besides the hush money case, there was the federal election interference case. The Georgia election interference case. The Florida classified documents case. But miraculously Teflon Don’s legal maneuverings and election victory mean none of those cases will stick, and the two federal prosecutions already have been dismissed. Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, says Trump’s election was a “mandate” from voters who demanded an end to the “witch hunts” against him. Really? The American people want a convicted felon as their president? I don’t think so. Gullible supporters believed Trump when he promised to slash inflation and make their lives better. That’s why they voted for him, along with his macho man image. But now that Trump is acting like a dictator-in-waiting, wanting to take over Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal, many realize that was a bunch of campaign crap. Sounds to me like Trump’s been hanging out with Putin far too long and is taking a page out of his playbook. Don’t know about you, but I’m dreading what’s ahead over the next four years. I’m 82 tomorrow, and I hope I make it to see the end of Donald J. Trump’s political career.

S5 Ep 726Trump Election is Certified; America is at Risk
EJanuary 6 four years ago was a dark day in America. That was the day that Donald Trump zealots attacked the U.S. Capitol, storming through broken windows and doors, and assaulting brave law enforcement officers. It was a violent attack spawned by Trump, one that even featured a makeshift gallows on the Capitol grounds that MAGATs said was waiting for Vice President Mike Pence who refused Trump’s request to hand the presidency over to him.Yesterday, exactly four years later, Trump’s election victory was peacefully certified by Vice President Kamala Harris, who Trump defeated on November 5.So, yesterday, too, was a dark day for America – not because of a violent attempt at insurrection, because she did her job as required by the Constitution – the very document Trump is determined to overturn.Even now, Trump and his cronies continue to downplay the seriousness of that assault on the Capitol four years ago. They’re trying to rewrite history and pretend that what happened then was simply a bunch of tourists taking a walk through the Capitol. Never mind the deaths and injuries that resulted from that violent day when law enforcement officers were beaten, dragged, knocked unconscious with some eventually perishing because of what happened. But to hear them tell it, Jan. 6, 2021 was simply a peaceful demonstration and exercise of free speech that got out of hand. Don’t believe what you saw with your own eyes, we are told. That cannot stand. Our children and grandchildren who did not witness those awful events must know the truth, because to deny it is to invite such chaos once again. In just a few days – in fact on Martin Luther King Day – the racist, Donald J. Trump, will be inaugurated as president.Unless Trump intervenes, the nation’s flags will remain at half-mast in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, who just passed away. For many Americans, that will be entirely appropriate because of the continued threat that Trump and his backers pose to our country.Because of this threat we launched our Lean to the Left blog in 2017 and then our podcast, and it’s why we published our book, Hijacked Nation, Donald Trump’s attack on America’s greatness. These efforts will continue as long as Donald Trump remains a threat to our democracy. Here's how you can help. Buy the book on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. It’s only $11. Sign up for our podcast at leantotheleft.net/podcast, and become a paid subscriber to our Substack channel. Help us continue this fight. As President Biden wrote yesterday, “We should never forget it is our democracy that makes everything possible — our freedoms, our rights, our liberties, our dreams. And that it falls to every generation of Americans to defend and protect it.”Thank you for tuning in! I'm passionate about bringing progressive voices to the forefront, and I hope our discussions inspire you to think critically about the issues we face today.

S5 Ep 725Life After Prison Release: John Graham's Mission to Change Lives
EJohn David Graham's story is one of resilience, transformation, and unwavering dedication to helping others. A journey that saw him move from homelessness to becoming a business owner and published author, Graham's life took a pivotal turn when he found his true calling at the age of 53. Recognizing a need to support individuals fresh out of prison, he founded the Good Samaritan Home—a nonprofit agency offering a second chance to those seeking a fresh start.Faced with the struggles of homelessness and a never-ending search for where he fit in the world, he eventually met a remarkable woman who saw potential in him that even the finance company that repossessed his truck couldn't see. With his wife by his side, Graham decided to focus on a deeper purpose—to help those who had experienced similar struggles. By purchasing and remodeling old homes, John transformed them into welcoming shelters for the homeless, laying the groundwork for the Good Samaritan Home.Partnering with the Ohio Department of Corrections, the Good Samaritan Home expanded into transitional housing for individuals reentering society after prison. This innovative approach, tailored to provide independent housing rather than mere halfway housing, has been both cost-effective for the state and life-changing for residents. Today, the organization operates 19 houses with the capacity to host up to 100 individuals at any given time.Building Bridges, Transforming PerceptionsBuilding the Good Samaritan Home was fraught with challenges. Initial backlash from the local community was fierce, culminating in ordinances, petitions, and even police protection for John and his family. However, through patient perseverance and community engagement, such as clearing neighbors' sidewalks during winter, perceptions began to change. Over time, Good Samaritan Home was recognized as a revitalizing force within neighborhoods, rather than a threat, proving that compassion and understanding can break down barriers. The true measure of John's mission lies in the stories of those who've benefited from his work. John shares success stories of former residents who found stability, employment, and even love. These stories are testament to the life-changing potential of the Good Samaritan Home, which embraces individuals regardless of their background, offering them a chance to rewrite their life story.A Legacy of Second ChancesIn his novel, "Running as Fast as I Can," Dr. Graham weaves a fictional narrative that echoes the themes of second chances present in his own life. Despite facing over 200 publisher rejections, Graham was determined to share a story that resonates with everyone—a tale that highlights the importance of multiple opportunities for redemption. As he reflects on societal challenges reminiscent of the 1960s, John remains committed to running his race—supporting one person at a time and advocating for systemic change. His belief in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of a moral universe bending toward justice keeps him grounded and hopeful for the future.Dr. Graham's extraordinary journey from trial to triumph serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on countless lives. Through the Good Samaritan Home, he provides shelter and opportunity while fostering hope and resilience in communities. His story encourages each of us to pursue our passions diligently, believe in the power of second chances, and strive to be part of a moral universe that prioritizes justice and compassion.CHAPTERS:00:00 Introduction to John David Graham00:51 Inspiration Behind Good Samaritan Home02:35 Building Good Samaritan Home10:50 Challenges and Community Resistance16:39 Success Stories and Impact17:53 Writing and Publishing Journey23:21 Reflections on the 60s and Political Climate31:37 Closing Thoughts and Future Plans

S4 Ep 724Carter's Peaceful Path vs. Trump's Self-serving Agenda
EThe passing of former President Jimmy Carter, recognized by many as one of the most virtuous leaders in American history, brings into stark relief the contrasting legacy of the convicted felon Donald J. Trump, who is set to resume office on January 20. As we reflect on the lives and careers of these two leaders, the differences between them raise questions of values, integrity, and legacy.Jimmy Carter: A Lifetime of Service and PeaceJimmy Carter, despite criticisms from his single term as President, spent the better part of five decades after his time in office dedicating himself to humanitarian efforts and advocacy for world peace. His charitable work, including building homes for the underprivileged through Habitat for Humanity and his vigorous peacemaking efforts, earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Unlike many before and after him, Carter shunned lucrative opportunities that other former presidents embraced, choosing instead to live simply and serve selflessly. In a 2018 interview, Carter revealed, “I don’t see anything wrong with that. I don’t blame other people for doing it. It just never had been my ambition, it just never had been my ambition to be rich.” It’s a statement that encapsulates his humble approach, markedly different from that of Donald Trump.Carter’s presidency saw significant achievements like the passage of the Panama Canal Treaties and the establishment of the U.S. Departments of Energy and Education, the latter of which now face eradication under Trump’s administration. Trump says he wants to take over the Panama Canal.[caption id="attachment_8805" align="alignleft" width="182"] Available at https://amzn.to/3BUiaiH[/caption]It was Jimmy Carter who famously promised never to lie to the American people. Contrast that with Trump, whose lies and misrepresentations have reached into the thousands and continue to this day.Donald Trump: Wealth and PowerFor Donald Trump, the presidency has often seemed a bid to amplify his wealth and influence, with his time in office marred by controversies and legal battles. A federal appeals court recently upheld a sex abuse verdict against him, a striking coincidence in timing with Carter’s noble passing. Trump’s presidency has been characterized by policies that favor big business and corporate interests, contrary to Carter’s dedication to equitable service. His commercial endeavors extend even into the spiritual, with the sale of expensive religious memorabilia and exclusive access to prayer sessions for the affluent, illustrating a stark contrast to Carter’s modest sense of duty. The Legacy of Carter versus TrumpThe life stories and presidencies of Jimmy Carter and Donald Trump illustrate two divergent paths of American leadership. Carter's simple refusal of “Hail to the Chief” and his grassroots community service highlight a humility often absent in modern politics. Trump’s anticipated return to the presidency, however, brings back into focus a personality that has been accused of exploiting power for personal gain.As Jimmy Carter is laid to rest beside his lifelong companion, Rosalind, the country mourns the loss of a true public servant and a hero to many. In stark contrast, Donald Trump’s impending second term brings renewed concerns about ethics, governance, and the direction of American values. This juxtaposition poses a profound reflection on what it means to lead with dignity and purpose.00:00 Carter's Legacy vs. Trump's Verdict00:19 Carter's Post-Presidency Contributions00:42 Trump's Return and Carter's Final Rest01:06 Carter's Humility vs. Trump's Wealth01:54 Carter's Humanitarian Efforts02:10 Carter's Achievements and Trump's Plans02:40 Carter's Faith vs. Trump's Greed03:07 A Tale of Two Presidents03:23 Conclusion: A Hero and a Felon

S4 Ep 722Christmas with Donald Trump
EWith the holiday season upon us, the conversation surrounding politics and its impact on everyday Americans becomes even more poignant. An article by The Washington Post sheds light on a group of low-income Trump voters who are now faced with the unexpected consequences of their voting decisions. Among them is a woman who, due to financial constraints, relies on a bicycle to grocery shop because affording car repairs is beyond her reach. Her monthly income is comprised of $1,200 in food stamps and Social Security, supporting both herself and her teenage son.A Misguided VoteThis Trump voter, a former Democrat, believed that his presidency would bring about positive changes—cheaper groceries and gas, a more favorable economy. However, his focus on cutting federal spending tells a different story. Programs at risk include Medicaid, food stamps, veterans health care, the Affordable Care Act, federal housing assistance, opioid treatment and drug development initiatives, domestic violence programs, Head Start, among others. The promises of prosperity and improved financial circumstances ring hollow as Trump’s administration prepares to cut critical benefit programs. For those voters who supported him in hopes of change, there’s an unsettling realization: their vote may not have been in their best interest. The stark contrast between the lavish million-dollar fundraisers for Trump’s affluent supporters and his average voter’s struggle to afford basic necessities emphasizes the chasm between promise and reality. The Harsh Truth of Economic PoliciesAs Trump celebrates with his wealthy supporters, perhaps enjoying champagne at opulent Mar-a-Lago, many of his voters face harsher choices—like deciding between food or toilet paper on trips to Walmart. The disconnect between expectations and actions raises an important question: Is this outcome truly what they envisioned when they voted?Election decisions carry profound impacts, with voter expectations sometimes clashing sharply with political realities. For Trump voters now facing the potential loss of vital benefits, it should be a sobering lesson in understanding the true implications of political promises. He backs a national abortion ban and has never seen a conspiracy theory he didn’t like. He has zero health expertise, and was picked because of his last name and his endorsement of Trump. Gaetz is just plain slimy. He was investigated by the bipartisan House Ethics Committee for allegedly engaging in sexual misconduct with a 17-year-old girl and violating sex trafficking laws, while accepting improper gifts. He resigned from Congress immediately after being picked by Trump to be his attorney general. One crook hired to protect another. S4 Ep 711A GOP Insider's Election Analysis 2024
EA GOP Insider's Election Analysis 2024In this episode of the Lean to the Left podcast, host Bob Gatty interviews Jamie Miller, former Executive Director of the Florida Republican Party and veteran of the 2000 George Bush campaign, for an analysis of Donald Trump's 2024 defeat of Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. They discuss a variety of topics including demographic voting patterns, Miller's perceived overreach of the Democratic Party on key issues, the impact of immigration policies, and questions surrounding electric vehicles and the economy. For his part in this election analysis 2024, Host Bob Gatty points out the overreach of the Republican Party, including Donald Trump's threat to go after his perceived enemies, including many in the Democratic Party. They also touch on controversial subjects such as the aftermath of the January 6th Capitol attack, immigration policies including Trump's mass deportation plans and the situation of the Dreamers, and the debate over whether the 2020 election was legitimately won by Biden. Miller provides insights from his right-of-center perspective, while Bob offers counterpoints from the left, aiming to foster a balanced and reasonable discussion in this fascinating election analysis.Miller's bottom line was that Democrats lost the support of many voters by focusing on such issues as abortion, protecting LGBTQ+ rights, and allowing transgender individuals to compete in school sports, when their primary concern was the economy and inflation.Remember, I believe in the power of dialogue to drive change. S4 Ep 709The Price of Bacon
EThe Price of BaconTrump's supporters, who unfairly blamed Joe Biden for the increase in grocery prices and other products following the pandemic, put the price of bacon and other foods ahead of potentially losing many important freedoms under the presidency of Donald Trump.Aside from the trepidation that many feel because of Trump's election, perhaps the saddest aspect is that more than 71 million Americans fell for his message of hate, his lies, his exaggerations, and his pie in the sky promises. They forget that Trump thoroughly mismanaged the pandemic, resulting in millions of deaths. And apparently they don't care that he harbors hopes of installing himself as some sort of dictator. Harris did her best, but her messaging fell flat with many women, particularly whom she counted on to lead her to victory. Trump stacked the Supreme court to get rid of abortions, but the price of bacon apparently trumped concerns about losing reproductive freedom. If Trump follows through on his pledge to impose massive tariffs on imported goods, do they not realize that the price of goods will skyrocket? Perhaps they like Trump's plan to give another huge tax cut to millionaires and big business at their own expense. Trump promised to deport millions living in the country illegally, and from his continued rhetoric, it sounds like he's entirely serious, regardless of the cost as his braintrust is already making implementation plans. What would be the impact on the economy if he did that? Who will pick the produce or build our houses, do our landscaping, yes, even pick our hardshell crabs?Trump said he would protect American women whether they like it or not,. That's from the man convicted of sex crimes. He's threatened his political opponents as "the enemy within," and said he military should take care of them.Apparently 71. 5 million voters who chose Trump paid no attention to that. Or they actually liked the message, such as his deportation plans. Enough. We must continue to resist this fanatic who, indeed, has hijacked our nation simply to satisfy his on insatiable greed. I intend to continue to do that through this podcast, my LeantotheLeft.net blog, and my books. A new one has just been released, Hijacked Nation, Donald Trump's attack on America's greatness. You can find it here: https://amzn.to/4ePrTF7, and another one, a political thriller, is now in the works. "The government you elect is the government you deserve," wrote Thomas Jefferson. Those 71. 5 million Trump voters will discover over these next years that those words are absolutely true. After all, what's more important, the price of bacon or your own freedom?

He also shares his admiration for Thomas Jefferson and how U.S. politics have influenced his storytelling. Reflecting on his 60-year friendship with former Senator Bill Bradley, Archer discusses the current American political climate and Donald Trump's impact, saying that American democracy is at risk if Trump wins the election."We in England find it very hard to understand how he (Trump) ever became the candidate. It's beyond us," Archer says. "If you love America as much as I do, you can grow to understand it because you realize that he appeals to a certain section of the American public"However, Archer predicts that Trump will defeat Kamala Harris, but worries that if she wins in a close race, violence could ensue. "What I dread most is a result, say 268 to 272 win by Kamala Harris, because if that happened, heaven knows what will happen next," he says. S4 Ep 700Are You the Enemy from Within?
EAre You the Enemy from Within? In perhaps his most direct threat yet, Donald Trump said on Fox News last week that the U.S. military should be used on Election Day to handle what he called “the enemy from within,” whom he identified as “radical left lunatics.”Trump said America is filled with "some very bad people...radical left lunatics," and his threat to use the military against American citizens who oppose him is dangerous and should not be ignored.Don't simply dismiss those threats as "oh, that's just Trump talking," because he generally follows through and does what he says. And then, there is his former National Security advisor, Michael Flynn, who is a QAnon kook and says "the gates of hell will be unleashed" against Trump enemies if he wins the election. The only way to prevent all of this is to vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz on Election Day (or before, if you have early voting in your state).Do it!Meanwhile, let's keep the conversation going. We have many more thought-provoking discussions lined up that you won't want to miss."If the election were today, Vice President Kamala Harris would defeat former President Donald Trump by about five points, according to Doug Kaplan, president of the national polling and political consulting firm, Kaplan Strategies. On the Lean to the Left podcast, Kaplan said Trump is on the defense as Harris gains momentum coming out of the September 10 debate."If the election were today, Harris would win," said Kaplan, on the Lean to the Left podcast, recorded following the September 10 presidential debate, "However, two months is a long time in politics."When asked about the enduring impact of the debate performances, Doug Kaplan said that without more debates, this singular encounter may dominate the narrative and that Harris’s significant fundraising and the Republicans’ chaotic strategy underscore a potential advantage for the vice-president.Kaplan cautioned that Harris needs to win nationally by four to five points and win the swing states by at least two points if she is to secure the election.""Each day the election focuses on Trump is a win for Harris," said Kaplan. "Trump needs to make it about her, but he has struggled." Trump's on the defense, he added.Kaplan pointed out Trump's vulnerability on the issue of reproductive rights, saying, "if reproductive rights inspire a high voter turnout among women, it could be a decisive factor."Young voters could also help turn the tide for Harris, noted Kaplan, who pointed out that Barack Obama was able to capture strong support from those voters, and the question now is whether Harris can do the same. Both immigration and the economy also will continue to be major factors, added Kaplan, as they continue to evolve.___________________A former journalist and communications consultant, Bob Gatty is the founder and editor of the Lean to the Left blog and host of this podcast, which focuses on progressive politics and the important social issues of our time.Prefer to listen instead of watching our Podcast? S4 Ep 689Trump, Kennedy & Roadkill
EOne Nutcase Joins AnotherRobert F. Kennedy, Jr., the man who had a parasitic worm in his brain, tried to get Kamala Harris to give him a job in her new administration, has dropped out of the presidential sweepstakes and is backing another nutcase, Donald J. Trump. They deserve each other and make a great match considering that Trump, while his brain apparently is worm-free, is about as wacko as you can get considering that during the Covid pandemic he tossed out the idea of injecting people with bleach to prevent the onset of the virus that's claimed more than 1.2 million people, mostly on his watch. And remember what he said in 2020: "I don't take responsibility at all."OK, so now worm-brain RFK Jr. has hooked up with Trump in his effort to derail the Harris-Walz march to the White House. It's a great fit, too, because Kennedy once sent a friend a pic of himself with what he claimed to be a barbecued dog cooked on a spit. So, he should get along great with Trump's VP runningmate JD Vance, who apparently has something against cats.A lot of women are pissed off at Vance for saying the U.S. is being run by Democrats, corporate oligarchs and "a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices they've made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too."Wow! That is really weird! How does that dovetail with all the joy the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz team is bringing to the presidential campaign -- and, really, the nation? It's especially weird, too, because it's the Republicans who are being run by corporate oligarchs who Trump is trying to hit up for campaign cash, not the Democrats who are laser focused on helping the middle class.Anyway, the Democratic National Committee"s War Room has emailed a press release with reactions to the RFK Jr's support of Trump, as he apparently has given up hopes of working in the Harris administration because Kamala refused to take his call. So, he's now switching to Trump where he must think he could find a job. Hopefully, however, it would not be as dog catcher. Here are some of the comments published by the War Room following Kennedy's endorsement of Trump:The Hill: GOP strategist cautions Trump on joining forces with RFK Jr: ‘He’s kind of a looney tune’“Republican strategist Scott Jennings advised former President Trump to be careful now that he has seemingly joined forces with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., arguing the independent presidential candidate is ‘kind of a looney tune.’ [...] ‘There could be some cost on the other side of the algebra…he’s a conspiracy theorist, and a lot of people think he’s kind of a looney tune.’”Stuart Stevens on MSNBC with Ali Velshi “Well, you know, Donald Trump objects to being called weird. So what does he do…he goes and takes this endorsement from, you know, one of the sadder figures in American public life. A guy who clearly is just broken…you have two candidates that are supporting Putin, two candidates who would like to end the war in Ukraine so that Russia could take Ukraine, and you have two candidates who are against any mandatory vaccines in schools…that's the pro—polio route. I mean, it is just as nutty as it can be, and it will continue to dismay me that other members of my former party don't call it out. It's just crazy."Ronald Brownstein with CNN’s Michael Smerconish“And I think this latent threat to Trump of being associated with anti vaccine extremism that Kennedy brings to him, I think on balance, this will end up being more of a problem than an asset.”Scott Jennings and Karen Finney on State of the Union with Jake TapperJennings: “My caution, my advice, would be the downstream effects of this. You now own anything [RFK Jr.] might do or say for the next couple of months, and this may or may not inure your benefits. So I would just caution, careful, careful.”Finney: “If you want to have that endorsement, I'm perfectly happy for you to because that's fine. I mean, people who take dead bear cubs to Central Park… if you want that vote, go for it.”Jennifer Rubin on MSNBC’s The Saturday Show “I think the more people know about Bobby Kennedy, the more people who are sane will not want to vote for him. I think he is a perfect match for Donald Trump. And in fact, if I were JD Vance, I would stick by the phone, because he might be just the kind of guy that Trump would pull in as an October surprise. He is freakish in every sense of the word, whether it's picking up bear road kill or eating a barbecue dog. But much more seriously, he's a nut. He is a conspiracy nut. He's a racist."And so, indeed, worm-brain RFK, Jr. is a perfect match for Trump as one nutcase joins another. Walz got it right. Those guys really are weird.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.
