S1 Ep 368368. Creating Routines and Setting Expectations for a Better Law Firm with Mark Rockwell

Today, we welcome back Mark Rockwell to The Law Entrepreneur. What Mark does is help solo and small, firm practitioners. Now he's an attorney by trade, but most of his adult life in business and I think that gives him a little different insight into challenges faced by solo and small firms. Because of that, he brings a different approach to coaching those law practitioners. We have a great conversation today about time tracking, charging what you’re worth, and creating an open and honest environment with both your clients and those working in your law firm. Listen in for some great takeaways to help you run a more successful firm today. In this episode, Neil and Mark discuss:Challenges solo and small firm law firms face. Setting out expectations and scope of work with your client. Keeping on top of your accounts receivable and your time. Tracking time, managing distractions, and avoiding incorrect time reporting. Key Takeaways:Nobody wants to gouge their clients, but if the client understands the value that is created and the work that is involved, they will be more willing to pay you for what you are worth. If you let your AR go too far, you will go from a big, well-paying client to a pro bono client very quickly. Interruptions are destructive to billable time and will be fatal financially. If you do not bill the number of hours in a day that you expected and planned for, you need to understand where that time is going and what activities are pulling you away from that time. Without knowing what those habits and problems are, there will be no change. "At the end of the day, when lawyers aren’t billing enough, it’s a lack of confidence. I believe that in billing and capturing all your time, you have to be confident that you are creating value, the total number of hours that you're going to have billed against this project is going to be met with the acceptance of the client, and they're going to be willing to pay the bill. That is why it goes back to that upfront conversation of managing expectations and understanding the value that is being created." — Mark RockwellGet in touch with Mark Rockwell:Website: https://coachrockwell.com/ Email: [email protected] LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/coachrockwell Listen to Episode 277 with Mark Rockwell here: https://thelawentrepreneur.com/episodes/277-law-is-not-just-a-profession-its-a-business-with-mark-rockwell/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 367367. Changing Your Behavior to Change Your Business with Steph Tuss

Today, my guest is Steph Tuss. Steph is the CEO of a company called Light Is Now, a consulting company that works with small firms and businesses, including law firms, to help them grow, prosper, and to give time back to those who are leading those endeavors to live their best life. We had her business partner, David Neagle, on last year and I wanted to have Steph on because she has more of the hands-on, tactical role in their company, whereas David is the more visionary individual, and so I wanted to kind of complete the picture with her. She gives some great tips and you will get some great takeaways. In this episode, Neil and Steph discuss:Understanding why you don’t do the things you know you need to do. Utilizing an integrator in your business to focus on your areas of genius. Putting dissatisfaction into action. Working with your team not controlling and micromanaging. Key Takeaways:There are two parts to change: awareness and applying new behaviors. If you don’t hire the right people, it will be harder for your business to succeed. Your team is only as good as your worst player. Set your team up for success from the beginning. Until you have the right things in your business, you don’t know if you are stifling your A-Players. Be willing to pay for one person who can do the jobs you need done well, rather than spending less on multiple people who will do it less well. "You've got to start employing new behaviors because that's the only way that change actually occurs. If you just have the awareness, nothing changes, nothing happens. You have to show up differently, which means you have to act differently." — Steph TussEpisode References: The Law Entrepreneur - Understanding the Art of Leverage with David Neagle: https://thelawentrepreneur.com/episodes/333-understanding-the-art-of-leverage-with-david-neagle/ No Rules Rules by Reed Hastings: https://www.amazon.com/No-Rules-Netflix-Culture-Reinvention/dp/B0845Z14DX/ Get in touch with Steph Tuss:Website: https://www.lifeisnowinc.com/ Successful Mind Podcast: https://www.successfulmindpodcast.com/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/stephtuss Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 366366. Operating a Law Firm with Diversity and Integrity at the Core with Corey Kupfer

My guest today is Corey Kupfer. Corey is an attorney that deals with mostly high-level business law, mergers, acquisitions, deal-making, and all that good stuff. But he’s also a highly sought-after and well-recognized content creator in the area of deal-making, has authored a book, and is the host of the very popular DealQuest Podcast. We have a broad discussion today about how he entered the practice of law, how he built his business, and about one of his passion projects - bringing diversity into the legal, entrepreneurial, and business development spaces. To Corey, diversity is more than just a buzzword, it is something that he lives fully and completely every day. I hope you enjoy it. In this episode, Neil and Corey discuss:Looking at negotiations as the start of a relationship. AI in the legal industry. Creating authority with content and authority marketing. Living authentically and the business case for diversity. Key Takeaways:There are always deals that are happening, they are just going to be different during a recession or other hard times. It takes a conscious effort and plan to expose yourself to different groups, get comfortable in circles not of your own, and to put yourself out there. You will make mistakes. Continue to learn, continue to grow, and learn to apologize when you are in the wrong. If you are writing a book, make sure you aren’t writing an article with 150 extra pages. Write your book with the intention of sharing the information you don’t want to take with you to the grave that can help better serve your audience. "It takes more than an openness, it takes a conscious effort and plan to get yourself out there and expose yourself more to different groups, learn cultures, get comfortable, and build trust. The best way that we grow our businesses is that we build trust and more and more people who feel comfortable with us will give us business in return." — Corey KupferGet in touch with Corey Kupfer:Website: https://www.coreykupfer.com/ Website: https://www.kupferlaw.com/ Book: https://www.coreykupfer.com/the-book DealQuest Podcast: https://www.coreykupfer.com/podcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/coreykupfer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CoreyKupfer/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/coreykupfer/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coreykupfer/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 365365. Getting More Done with Ruby Receptionists with Sarah Allen

Today my guest is Sarah Allen. Sarah is the partner account manager for Ruby Receptionists - the same company that is a sponsor for this podcast and has been for many, many years. In terms of full disclosure, I was a client of Ruby long before I started the podcast, and so it was a natural connection there when they agreed to become a sponsor and have been from near the beginning of this podcast. But Ruby has evolved over the years. And they recently really went through a management shake-up and they've added a bunch of features that they didn't have at the time when I first started with Ruby. We've had a feel representative from Ruby back in the day when we talk just about Virtual Receptionist. Today, we talk about why Ruby is such a great company, and why the services offered are so appropriate for solo and small firm practitioners. So without any further delay, here is my friend Sarah Allen. In this episode, Neil and Sarah discuss:What Ruby does for law firms. Capturing more client calls and standing out with your client experience. Utilizing the calls you’re receiving to track your marketing strategies. The importance of having live chat on your website to better serve your clients. Key Takeaways:The number one thing you should do if you are looking to automate and grow your law practice is to hire a virtual receptionist. Your virtual receptionist can do more than you are likely allowing them to do. As they work with you, they will get to know you and your firm and will be able to serve your clients better.Your website is your new front door - that is where people are coming to meet you, learn about your service offerings, and learn more about what they need. It takes a lot of moving parts to run a business, which is what your law firm is. Utilizing a virtual receptionist, like Ruby, will save you time, save you effort, and free you up to do the important work that only you can do. "Every call is more than just a conversation, it's more than just answering the phone. There's a lot more that goes into handling all those calls, and everything that goes along with them." — Sarah AllenGet in touch with Sarah Allen:Website: https://get.ruby.com/TLE LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarahcallen/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 364364. Leaving a Legacy through PR with Susan Harrow

Today, my guest is Susan Harrow. Susan is a public relations (PR) expert, who has been in the business for quite some time and was affectionately known as the go-to girl for Oprah. She has a very popular website with a lot of information on it at prsecrets.com. I wanted to have Susan on to talk about just how to think about a law firm, in terms of public relations, with the very media outlets that are in existence today, including social media, and how to align your message with what the media is looking for, and how you can use that to leverage your connections and your message to getting new clients and building your business. In this episode, Neil and Susan discuss:Standing out above the noise. Creating a messaging strategy before you contact the media. How media training is like prepping a witness or a client for trial. Creating the foundation for what your message is, then honing it for the audience you are targeting. The pros and cons of PR on social media. Key Takeaways:Every form of PR, social media, print, podcast, television, etc., is different and requires a different set of skills that need to be practiced. Repetition is the mold, perfection is the goal, but there is always something to be improved upon with each iteration and practice. Natural speaking as you explain what you do is often where you realize what your core message is. Think about the topics or causes that you can speak or write on that are relevant culturally, even if it doesn’t directly draw on your practice area. "PR builds your reputation, your thought leadership, your brand, and your visibility, sometimes instantly and sometimes over time, but I'm really focused on not your 15-seconds of fame, but leaving a legacy and giving something meaningful to the world." — Susan HarrowGet in touch with Susan Harrow:Website: https://prsecrets.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/soundbitesiren Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SusanHarrow LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/susanharrow/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susanharrow/ Create Your Signature Story: https://prsecrets.com/sigpod Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 363363. The Business of an Appellate Law Firm with Elizabeth Franklin-Best

Today, my guest is Elizabeth Franklin-Best. Elizabeth is an attorney in Columbia, South Carolina, who focuses pretty much exclusively on appellate work. In this episode, you're going to hear how ignorant I am part of appellate work, and Elizabeth is going to help educate me first, and, hopefully, you as well as to what this involves and how an appellate practice focuses primarily on federal appeals, as well as some state appeals there in South Carolina where she lives. We also talk about how that differs from a solo or small firm practice in other areas of law, the marketing paradigm, and the approach to business development for something like an appellate practice. In this episode, Neil and Elizabeth discuss:Creating the law firm you want to work at. What the appeal process can look like for those convicted of crimes. Marketing in different areas of law.Closing the education gap for clients. Utilizing the full functionality of your law firm software. Key Takeaways:There are a number of things that people can do on the backend of conviction that people can do to try and get their convictions reversed. This is a side of the law that a lot of people, including lawyers, just don’t know as well. You have the right to appeal, but you do not have the right to win the appeal nor do you have the right to appeal forever. You have to market to your clients where they are. If they are incarcerated that is different than if they are still free. There is a flexibility to working remotely that working solely in an office doesn’t allow. Appellate law lends itself well to remote work as much of it is research and writing. "We believe in radical transparency when it comes to legal fees. In my experience, that has been a real source of frustration for clients and their families in other environments." — Elizabeth Franklin-BestGet in touch with Elizabeth Franklin-Best:Website: https://elizabethfranklinbest.com/ Phone: 803-445-1333Twitter: https://twitter.com/eafb71 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ElizabethFranklinBestPC LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/elizabeth-franklin-best-p-c/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/elizabeth-franklin-best-5b6b2788/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elizabethfranklinbest/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 362362. Running Your Firm with Respect and Clear Expectations with Richard Sullivan

Today, my guest is Richard Sullivan. Richard heads up a very successful family law practice in Orange County, California, and he's been doing so now for the better part of 40 years. He has a tremendous perspective on how things in the legal space have changed over the course of time. He also comes from a very small town in Missouri. So you can imagine how his experience in small-town America, and then getting transplanted to Southern California, how that might also influence and impact his practice of law. It’s a great conversation, full of great stories and takeaways. Hope you enjoy! In this episode, Neil and Richard discuss:Guarding your reputation as a lawyer. Treating others with respect in all aspects of your case. Richard’s unique career path in criminal and family law. Finding, hiring, and retaining quality staff. Staying up to date with technology. Key Takeaways:In criminal law, you often have bad guys at their best. In family law, you often have good guys at their worst. As a lawyer, it is your job to tell your clients the truth about their case. Be honest, give them realistic expectations, and treat them with dignity and respect. When you divorce, you divorce to each other, not from each other, when kids are involved. When word gets out that you’re a respected attorney and treat your staff with respect, staff will come to you looking for employment. "We try to be absolutely honest with our clients and give them realistic expectations. If you set that right away, you're really ahead of the game getting to the conclusion of the case." — Richard SullivanGet in touch with Richard Sullivan:Website: https://www.sullivan-law.com/ Email: [email protected] Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sullivanlawandassociates/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-sullivan-0a65a84b/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/sullivan-law-associates/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 361361. Why Every Attorney & Firm Should Be Using TextExpander with Jeff Gamet

Jeff Gamet is a TextExpander Evangelist (yep, that’s his real title) from Smile, who are, as you might have guessed, the creators of TextExpander. I’ve been using TextExpander for a very long time, before I even became a lawyer, and it’s one of the first applications I install on any new device I get.If you’re not familiar, TextExpander is an application that lets you insert “snippets” of text (or graphics), removing the tedium of typing things over and over again while assuring important information is always accurate. It’s perfect for form letters, email addresses, signatures, or anything else that you find yourself typing over and over again (or anything that your team will type over and over again). This feature is available in some other software, but TextExpander is so useful because your same abbreviations work anywhere with a cursor and across any device it’s installed on, whether that’s a computer, phone, or tablet.Get in touch with Jeff Gamet:Website: https://textexpander.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffgamet/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 360360. Law Firm Lessons from Kobe Bryant with Henry Gereis

This is a classic rerun of my interview with Henry Gereis. Today, my guest is Henry Gereis, and Henry is a criminal defense attorney near Bakersfield, CA who has an interesting journey, having transitioned from family law, ultimately into doing criminal defense work. It's an interesting story about how he attributes a lot of the success that he's had to the fact that he's a huge fan of Kobe Bryant and learned a lot from Kobe and how Kobe approached his life in terms of being prepared and understanding all the nuances of what he was facing. Henry has taken that approach and applied it to his practice of law. It's a terrific homage to somebody who meant a lot to him and I think you can see it in what he does for his community. In this episode, Neil and Henry discuss:Henry’s transition from being a family law attorney to being a criminal defense attorney. How Kobe Bryant affected Henry’s career path and life. Challenges of being a solo or small-firm practitioner. Helpful tools utilized in Henry’s law practice. Key Takeaways:Every person deserves to be treated with respect and decorum, regardless of where they are from and their walk of life. If you are prepared to the best of your ability, there is no need to be nervous. You do not have to be great at everything. There are many other professionals that are out there to help you run your firm. With everything, break it down into its smallest components and take it one piece at a time. "I like to think of branding as what we represent. I think that empathy, especially in a criminal defense setting, is the missing ingredient in the legal profession. And so we have a slogan, and registered it, it's Client-Centered Caring Council™. And that's what we stand for. That's what we do every day." — Henry GereisGet in touch with Henry:Website: https://esqaspire.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gereislaw/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gereis.law Twitter: https://twitter.com/gereislLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/henry-gereis-034336121/ Reference: Raise Your Game: High-Performance Secrets from the Best of the Best by Alan Stein, Jr. - https://www.amazon.com/Raise-Your-Game-High-Performance-Secrets/dp/1546082867 Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.895.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. Today, my guest is Sarah Tetlow. Sarah is the founder and CEO of a company called Firm Focus. What Firm Focus does is it works with attorneys and law firms to improve a variety of things such as their productivity, ridding themselves of the art of procrastination and helping them delegate, she has a complete system for how to manage your email inbox, and a variety of those kinds of productivity enhancements that will allow you to become more efficient and more effective as an attorney and as a business owner. It’s a great conversation with tips and tools that can help everyone! In this episode, Neil and Sarah discuss:Sarah’s approach to time, attention, and email management. Appropriately prioritizing your day. Reducing procrastination in your life. Using ARTT to manage your email effectively and efficiently. Key Takeaways:Procrastination is a habit, not an identifier. You are procrastinating, you are not a procrastinator. Block and schedule your time on your calendar for you and hold to it as you would for meetings with other people. Schedule appointments with yourself to get the tasks done that you need to. Your inbox should not be your to-do list. You should also be wary of how many flags you are using in your inbox. "My system doesn't teach Inbox Zero, but it is about Inbox Zen. It teaches the workflow of the mailbox, in taking it out of the mailbox, you're doing something with it, and what to do with the message so it doesn't live in your inbox and you are taking control of it." — Sarah TetlowGet in touch with Sarah Tetlow:Website: https://www.firm-focus.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarah-tetlow/ Use TLE20 to get 20% off Sarah’s ARTT email system at: https://arttemail.com/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. Today, I am excited to welcome back Christy Zlatkus, founder of Z Family Law, to the show! Since the last time she was on the podcast, she has rebranded her law firm with a clear focus on creating consistent branding across every sensory aspect and social media platform. Christy talks to us about what that experience was like, what it means to really be client focused, and her unique approach to her rebrand. In this episode, Neil and Christy discuss:Being a partner in your client’s change. Creating more value for your clients than just legal services. Rebranding without changing what is working. What it means to work with the right marketing company.Viewing everything from the client experience. Key Takeaways:In family law especially, your clients want to see hope and empathy. It is easy to pick a logo and colors that have meaning. But you need to create a feeling with your brand to really connect to your clients. Your website is the cornerstone of your branding. Rebranding and building your website is going to take time to do it right. "It's easy to pick a logo that has a meaning, and it's really easy to pick colors. S1 Ep 356356. Repurposing Your Content For Greater Audience Reach with Kelsey Shumway

In today’s episode, recorded on the 7th year anniversary of the podcast, I talk to Kelsey Shumway. Kelsey is the Director of Sales and Strategy at Repurpose House. And as you're going to hear, she is an expert on how to repurpose marketing content, whether it be video or audio, and getting the bigger bang for your buck, so to speak, across social media channels, and ultimately driving more clients to your front door, and who doesn't need more clients knocking on their front door. It’s a great episode filled with a lot of practical information you can use today. Take a listen! In this episode, Neil and Kelsey discuss:Getting started with creating content (and getting it seen!). Repurposing your content to reach the right audience. The secrets of the algorithm. Setting yourself apart from the crowd. Key Takeaways:People love learning from people. They do not love learning from brands. Making your YouTube videos as searchable as possible is only going to help you - remember, Google owns YouTube. Utilize shorter-form content (created from your longer content) to continually direct people back to the long-form content. People want to take in content in different places and in different ways. Repackaging your already-created content to reach a wider audience is a great use of your time. "Your ultimate goal is to show up on social media. It is a necessity - I don't think it's optional anymore to be catering to an audience that prefers short-form content." — Kelsey ShumwayGet in touch with Kelsey Shumway:Website: https://repurposehouse.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/imkelseyshumway/ Use Code: TLE15 to get 15% off 2 months when you work with Repurpose House and mention the podcast!Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 355355. How to Turn Your Firm Into a Brand with Mike Kim

This is a classic rerun of my episode with Mike Kim. Mike Kim is a brand strategist for business thought leaders, coaches, authors, and anyone who wants to create impact with their ideas and get their message heard. He’s given a TED Talk and been featured on PBS, CNN, Fox, and more. He’s also the author of You Are The Brand. Attorneys tend to struggle with brand-building, especially solo or small firm practitioners who don’t have the money to spend on an advertising agency or brand manager. He’s worked with attorneys in the past and knows how to make the process easier.Resources:Website: https://mikekim.com/ Read: You Are The Brand - https://youarethebrandbook.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mikekim/You Are the Brand Podcast - https://mikekim.com/show Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 354354. Creating a Subscription-Based Law Firm with the Subscription Attorney, Mathew Kerbis

Today, my guest is Mathew Kerbis. Mathew is an attorney in downtown Chicago, and he recently went solo out after spending some time in the litigation world in a bigger law firm. He has launched his solo practice based entirely on the subscription model. What's really interesting about his approach is that he has envisioned a provision of legal services in much the same way as say a gym would provide services to their members with a base fee, and then extras added on, so to speak. I'll let him explain more of that to you in the podcast episode, but it's a really intriguing approach to how to structure both your firm and your pricing model that not too many people have explored. He is going to be speaking on the subject of the upcoming ABA Tech show in Chicago at the beginning of March. This episode is full of great information, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. In this episode, Neil and Mathew discuss:What motivated Neil to leave his litigation firm and go into solo practice. Being a parent, finding a work-life balance, and creating a firm that works for your life.Making money on a subscription model. Growing and serving clients as a solo subscription-based practitioner. Key Takeaways:The pandemic has completely changed client expectations. The old trappings of the legal industry are no longer a requirement for many clients. Create boundaries within your subscription model. Not everyone is going to be the best client for you and you’re not the right attorney for everyone. Clients are more likely to pay you an additional fee for additional work if they are already a subscriber, rather than having to find a new lawyer and get everything set up with that other attorney.Legal tech can help you to launch your subscription firm. There are many different options out there. Find what works for you and stick with that. Many of them integrate together to serve your clients better. "Things happen throughout our lives that we think we should handle on our own, in part, because lawyers are too expensive. Why would I pay a lawyer $250 an hour to ask a question that can be handled in five minutes? It doesn't make any sense. But it does on the subscription model." — Mathew KerbisGet in touch with Mathew Kerbis:Website: https://subscriptionattorney.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mathewrobertkerbis/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MathewKerbis Law Subscribed Podcast: https://lawsubscribed.com/ Join Lawyer Club FREE, where lawyers and law firm owners come to reclaim control of their firms and their lives! S1 Ep 353353. ChatGPT & AI in the Legal Industry with Jordan Ostroff

My guest on this episode is my good friend Jordan Ostroff. Jordan is an attorney down in Orlando, Florida. He is also the owner and creator of a legal marketing company called LegalEase. Today, I asked him on the show to specifically talk about a topic that I see come up over and over again on all the social media channels and in all the blogs that I pay attention to: the role and use of artificial intelligence in the legal marketplace, and how something called ChatGPT is taking off and is being touted as a game changer. I have to admit that I have for a number of different reasons, kind of stuck my head in the sand with respect to AI in the legal space, so I wanted to get somebody to school beyond the subject and there's nobody better than Jordan and so hopefully you'll be as enamored with the information as I was.In this episode, Neil and Jordan discuss:ChatGPT and AI in the legal marketplace. Doing things differently in your marketing. What ChatGPT can do and how it is learning as it is used. Delegating the 80% to AI. Key Takeaways:If you’re truly standing out and doing things differently, AI is going to allow you to do marketing easier, more consistently, and cheaper than ever before. Writing is where we are seeing AI make more inroads. While an AI is not a person and won’t see things in the same way a person would, taking into account current events and in-the-moment changes, it can often point out things that seemed too simple or were overlooked by people. AI will allow you to create content more quickly, allowing you to have a baseline that can then be tweaked to your writing style, content, and ideas in a more timely fashion. "The more that you're spending time honing your craft, the less you're wasting time on random BS that fills up our week, instead replacing that with automation and delegation. It's going to be awesome to see how much more time people have to be better at their actual jobs, to move the ball forward, and to provide a better experience." — Jordan OstroffGet in touch with Jordan Ostroff:Website: https://www.jordanlawfl.com/ LegalEase: https://www.legaleasemarketing.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jordan.ostroff/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordan-ostroff/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lawyerwithalife/ Join Lawyer Club FREE, where lawyers and law firm owners come to reclaim control of their firms and their lives! S1 Ep 352352. Building a Thriving Practice as a Busy Mom with Miriam Airington-Fisher

Today, my guest is Miriam Airington-Fisher. And Miriam is a law firm owner in the Richmond, Virginia area, who quite humbling to me, has been a longtime listener of The Law Entrepreneur and credits the program for helping her shape her practice as she was starting out as a solo practitioner in the criminal defense world, while trying to raise initially one and now three children at the same time. We talk about that journey, how convoluted and complex that journey can be for working moms, and how, through that discovery, she came to author a book called Mom's a Lawyer: Start a Firm and Take Control of Your Life, which then also gave rise to a course called Law Firm Launch. You're going to hear that whole span of development and growth from Miriam and it's just quite literally fascinating to me. I hope you enjoy it!In this episode, Neil and Miriam discuss:Balancing parenthood and running a law firm. Building a firm to fit your lifestyle, regardless of practice area. Increasing your fees and providing excellent customer service. Strategic hires to grow your firm. Key Takeaways:You aren’t going to know everything you need to know when you first build your practice and begin running it as a business. You do not need to build your firm like everyone else’s. You can create systems and designate roles in a way that works for you and your team. You can set reasonable boundaries and expectations while still being a diligent attorney. The number one reason women (up to ⅓) leave a legal career at the height of their career is because of family and home pressures. "I want to have a successful practice that serves as many people as we can. I want to have an office culture that is healthy, and that supports our team members excelling professionally, but also having a work-life balance." — Miriam Airington-Fisher Episode Reference: Find out more about Get Staffed Up and how they can help your firm here: https://getstaffedup.com/tle Scribe Media: https://scribemedia.com/ Get in touch with Miriam Airington-Fisher:Website: https://www.momsalawyer.com/ & https://www.airingtonlaw.com/Email: [email protected] Book: https://www.momsalawyer.com/book Show: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/accessory-to-justice/id1601832073 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSqJEivnENlXzVkDiQBoHCg LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/miriam-airington-fisher-409b27127/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/airingtonlaw/ & https://www.instagram.com/moms_a_lawyer/ <a...

S1 Ep 351351. Systematizing Your Law Firm with Shanice Miller

Today, my guest is Shanice Miller. Shanice is the owner of The Taskly Group, and they set up your business systems, so you don't have to. It's a really interesting model, because we hear attorneys say all the time that they need to systematize, but don't have the time to do that. Well, her company is tasked with doing just that. They come in, interview you, and go through the workflow. They then find out what needs improvement, they design how to do that, and then they implement the systems for you, including the training and the procedures and what have you. Taskly Group will help you set up your systems and, and provide training to your staff. And I think it's a really interesting model for those people who are busy tending to the legal needs of their practice and don't quite have the bandwidth to be able to do the necessary systemizations. I am really thrilled to have Shanice on the program, and I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did. In this episode, Neil and Shanice discuss:Systems development and implementation. The three departments of every business. Building a system unique to your law firm. Growing to the next level. Key Takeaways:You need to define what is causing problems before you can figure out how to design a system to fix those problems. Communication is one of the biggest complaints from many law firm clients. Building a system for regular communication will allow the client to feel cared for. There are a lot of different tools that do similar things - pick one that will work for you. The systems can be built into and around that system. There are only a certain number of clients you can serve without having systems in place. "Systems are the key to success in business. It is the key to helping you produce a sustainable business with less stress, fewer errors, and happier clients." — Shanice Miller Get in touch with Shanice Miller:Website: https://tasklygroup.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100081770791413 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shanicemiller/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tasklygroup_/ Get Shanice’s FREE 3 Steps to Automating and Scaling here: https://tasklygroup.com/neil Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to http://ruby.com/ or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 350350. The Neuroscience of Marketing with Dan Russell

Today, my guest is Dan Russell. Dan is a marketing expert who owns his own marketing firm and did a lot of workshops to help convey strategies and principles regarding marketing. What I really liked about his approach is that it’s based on neuroscience; he did the hard work of diving into the science behind why things work from a marketing perspective, and then took those findings, scientific findings, and created the principles and approaches to marketing that capitalized on those findings. So you're going to hear him talk about that. He's reduced that all down into a new book, Snake Oil, which walks you through the history and the current affairs of the marketing world and provides a lot of lessons that will help you break some of the notions that we have regarding marketing and how that can cause us to either reacting appropriately or not react. It's really an interesting conversation, to help us approach marketing from a new perspective. So I'm very happy to share with you this conversation with Dan Russell. In this episode, Neil and Dan discuss:Why you should know the neuroscience of marketing. Overcoming the distrust of marketers and the distrust of attorneys. Deciding what to test in your marketing. Finding your big ideas in the stories that you tell. Key Takeaways:If you know how to communicate the right message to the right people, you don’t need to do any fancy tactics. Marketing is both an art and a science. Your big idea is the nucleus of your marketing atom. All things should circle around that item and drive back to that big idea. You need to have a good message around which your campaigns are built around. You first need to get the attention before you can convert the sale. "Don't worry about the sales, because most people here probably have more of a lead generation problem than a sales problem. Just talking about leads, focus on the bare minimum number of steps that need to happen to generate a lead, then measure the conversions at each step along that process." — Dan Russell Get in touch with Dan Russell:Website: https://heydanrussell.com/ Book: https://heydanrussell.com/book/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/heydanrussell Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/heydanrussell Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heydanrussell/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/heydanrussell/ Join Lawyer Club FREE, where lawyers and law firm owners come to reclaim control of their firms and their lives! S1 Ep 349349. Be a Specialist with James Grant

Today, my guest is James Grant. James is the co-founder of Georgia Trial Attorneys, a pretty sizable law practice just outside of Atlanta that focuses on personal injury, but their firm is exclusively devoted to litigating personal injury cases. And so their referral partners, are other law firms that are doing the pre-litigation work, who aren't able, for whatever reason, to resolve the case and have to put the matter into suit. That's what James’ firm does and they're very successful at it. We talk about that evolution, how he went from a practicing attorney as a prosecutor, and now how he and his partner have formed this very successful partnership in trial practice. In this episode, Neil and James discuss:The evolution from a prosecutor to a litigation personal injury attorney. Helping other lawyers make more money with less stress. The virtualization of law firms. Utilizing technology for a litigation law firm with a virtual team. Key Takeaways:The skill set you need to run a pre-litigation personal injury practice is not the same, nor is the level of resources needed, if that case ends up going to trial. Everyone needs a unique value proposition. Clients don’t care about your physical location - they just want to have you be accessible and communicative. You can’t run a business on gut and feeling. You need to run a business on data and metrics. Your law firm is a business. "The number one thing that we found is you have to be a specialist. The thing that I've always seen, whether it's in entrepreneurship or in school, and pretty much in any station in life, if you dabble in a little bit of everything, you're an expert in nothing." — James GrantGet in touch with James Grant:Website: https://www.gtakg.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCc6YLXt4TEKCgZluDLkzwOQ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/georgiatrialattorneys LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-grant-accidentattorneyjg/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/accidentattorneyjg/ Join Lawyer Club FREE, where lawyers and law firm owners come to reclaim control of their firms and their lives! S1 Ep 348348. Standing Out in a Hyper-Saturated Market with Shane McClelland

Today, my guest is Shane McClelland. Shane is a personal injury attorney in Katy, Texas, and Shane recently transitioned to a solo practice. He was in a partnership with some other attorneys before that, and before that big law. We talk about where he is as a solo practitioner and what he's learned along the way. Some of those are lessons that all of us could benefit from, especially in this highly-competitive area of personal industry in a highly-competitive region of the country. It's one of the places in the country that is rife with very experienced, and excellent personal injury attorneys, and the competition is stiff, so there's a lot to be learned from somebody who's competing in that market as a solo practitioner. In this episode, Neil and Shane discuss:Lessons learned as a personal injury attorney. Running a solo law practice in the hyper-competitive market in Houston, TX.Utilizing tech to run your firm.Niching down and becoming known for what you do. Key Takeaways:It’s called an attorney-client relationship for a reason. Be creative with staying in touch with former clients, build relationships while you’re working with them, and stay top of mind with those clients. When you niche down, it doesn’t just have to be by area of law, it can also be geographical and it can have a huge, positive impact on your firm. The law is always changing, focusing in on one thing will allow you to become an expert in that area. Use tech that allows you to run your practice in the most efficient way for you, as well as in the best way for your clients to build that strong relationship is more likely to lead to referrals. "I think what I would do differently is I would pick one thing, and then focus primarily on that one thing. The longer that I'm out on my own, and the more established we get, the more we're narrowing in and focusing in on just the personal injury stuff." — Shane McClelland Get in touch with Shane McClelland:Website: https://www.hmtrial.com/ Email: [email protected] Phone: 713-987-7107Twitter: https://twitter.com/hmtrial Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hmtrials LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hmtrialshanemcclelland/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/losm/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hmtrial Join Lawyer Club FREE, where lawyers and law firm owners come to reclaim control of their firms and their lives! S1 Ep 347347. Standing Out with Leadership with Joe Musso

Today my guest is Joe Musso, a lawyer who has practiced for 25 years in nursing home abuse law. Now, we don't often times talk about the substantive aspects of the legal profession on this podcast. But I have to say, I honestly believe that Joe is the first person in 347 episodes that I know of that practices exclusively nursing home abuse. We dive a little bit into what makes it different and challenging, as well as rewarding. Joe has also been mentoring attorneys, literally all of his legal profession, and has now launched his own coaching program. There are a couple of really interesting aspects of his approach to coaching that I think are really refreshing and really sets him apart from other coaches In this episode, Neil and Joe discuss:Joe’s legal career in nursing home abuse law and his coaching practice. The need for more lawyers in nursing home abuse law. The technology needed to run a national law firm. Growing and developing lawyers. Key Takeaways:Nursing Home Abuse Law has fewer lawyers than most other areas and all of the lawyers have more cases than they can handle. Understanding the ins and outs of nursing home law is important, you don’t want your case turning from medical malpractice to a legal malpractice case. Have a client portal through your software that will allow your client to keep up to date on their cases - it will help you and your client. A lot of people are put into leadership positions but were never taught how to lead. "[Learning coaching as a skill] is such a great investment for a lawyer, especially if you own a law firm. And even if it's just the basics of coaching, on some level, that's what you're doing with your staff and your clients." — Joe Musso Get in touch with Joe Musso:Website: https://mussolawfirm.com/ Website: https://mussocoaching.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mussolawfirm/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joseph-musso-7519a22/ Join Lawyer Club FREE, where lawyers and law firm owners come to reclaim control of their firms and their lives! S1 Ep 346346. Content Marketing for Attorneys with Maddy Osman

Today, my guest is Maddy Osman. She is the founder and creator of The Blogsmith, which is a company that, as the name might imply, focuses on creating data-driven content typically for businesses in the B2B world. She's also done work for some larger-scale personal injury attorneys and has written a book called Writing for Humans and Robots, The New Rules of Content Style, and I think we, as attorneys, gravitate towards content marketing, because it’s something that we understand. What the book does is give you a lot more resources, and a lot more understanding of exactly how to do that writing. From there, you may find yourself in a position where you might want to use a company service, such as The Blogsmith. It's a really interesting conversation, you can tell that she's spent a lot of time in the trenches, understanding how Google works, and how content marketing works, so I think it's something that we could all benefit from. In this episode, Neil and Maddy discuss:Maddy’s journey into writing content for different industries and professionals. Positioning content properly. The purpose of keyword research and factoring in graphics. Creating a writing style guide for yourself or others writing on your behalf. Key Takeaways:It’s more than just writing a blog post. It’s about what you write and how you write it. Working with a professional, experienced content writer, such as The Blogsmith, can help to free up your time and energy as you are running your law firm. You want your reader to have an enjoyable reading experience. Pages of blanket text that look like a novel are not likely to be desirable to the reader. Graphics in your articles do not need to be custom branded or even a photo. "Before you really start any piece of content, you have to consider the goal of why you're creating that content. S1 Ep 345345. Processes and Procedures for Successful Recruiting and Staffing with Jaclyn Foster

Today my guest is Jaclyn Foster. She is the owner and head of something Del.Trust Legal Recruiting and Staffing. They provide a complete staffing solution ranging from virtual paralegal support to actual recruiting for full-time legal positions at your firm. I talk to Jaclyn about how she arrived at this approach to staffing for law firms and why she focused on law firms as opposed to other businesses. Our conversation is insightful and, hopefully, there's a solution there that you might find useful to meet the challenges that you have in your solo or small firm practice. In this episode, Neil and Jaclyn discuss:How Jaclyn started Del.Trust, her legal recruiting and staffing firm. Launching her firm at the start of the pandemic as firms go more virtual.Assessing your business processes critically. Getting to the root of why you are hiring who you are hiring and for what role. Key Takeaways:One of the biggest challenges a lot of law firms face is staffing, especially when they are growing or have a larger-than-normal caseload. The processes you have in your law firm will dictate what assistance you can get from your staff and outside help. Having one person who wears all hats is truly the biggest profit killer. You don’t need your highly-skilled, senior paralegal doing entry-level admin work.If you know you need help but can’t put a number of hours or tasks on it, slow down and figure out exactly what it is that you need as that will help you understand the associated costs. "Processes give you the answer to a lot of the business questions you have." — Jaclyn Foster Get in touch with Jaclyn Foster:Schedule a discovery call with Jaclyn here: https://del-trust.com/tle Website: https://www.del-trust.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jaclyn-foster-60b457196/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/del.trust/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deltrustsolutions Join Lawyer Club FREE, where lawyers and law firm owners come to reclaim control of their firms and their lives! S1 Ep 344344. Innovation and Systemic Processes in Your Law Firm with Davina Frederick

It is with great pleasure that I have Davina Frederick in the program today. She is the host of the fabulously popular podcast called The Wealthy Woman Lawyer, and the title describes exactly what the podcast is all about. She is an attorney herself and is a coach to many solo and small firm practitioners who are looking to grow their practice. So she's a perfect fit for the law entrepreneur. We have a great conversation today, and I think you’ll enjoy it too. In this episode, Neil and Davina discuss:Pioneering having a virtual law firm before it was commonplace. The trend in the legal industry to products, not just services. Merging marketing, coaching, and legal to build a successful law firm. Building your client based through attraction, not hunting. Key Takeaways:Listen to your clients. They know what they need and want out of their law firm service. Technology has advanced to allow you to work from anywhere at any time. This gives a lot of flexibility and freedom to all lawyers, particularly women. You need to understand who your client is and where they hang out (not just physically, but also where they are on social media and what they are reading). If you need better systems, you need to understand what, exactly, you are looking for with those systems. "A system is a certain, systematic way of doing is a certain way of doing things in a repeatable fashion and with consistent, repeatable results. You can plug in different people, and they should be able to accomplish the same thing in the same way. It's a process, we can apply people to systems and we can apply automation to systems or we can apply both of them." — Davina Frederick Get in touch with Davina Frederick:Website: https://www.wealthywomanlawyer.com/ Books and Other Resources: https://www.wealthywomanlawyer.com/products/ Show: https://www.wealthywomanlawyer.com/podcasts/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davinabfrederick/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/dbfrederick1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/wealthywomanlawyer/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to http://ruby.com/ or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 343343. Integrating Technology into a Solo Criminal Defense Practice with Erin Gerstenzang

This is a classic rerun of my episode with Erin Gerstenznag. Erin Gerstenznag is a technology wizard and a solo criminal defense practitioner, and today she shares how she uses technology to leverage her offerings as a criminal defense attorney. S1 Ep 342342. Building Authority & Your Email List with a Virtual Summit – with Nakia Gray

This is a classic rerun of my episode with Nakia Gray. Nakia Gray has an interesting tactic for marketing: She uses an online summit to promote her law practice and build her mailing list. She’s the perfect person to speak to on this subject, as her practice is a virtual practice that addresses the legal needs of entrepreneurs. She also has a coaching business that helps attorneys brand their firm and practice. All of these come together with the development of her legal summit that appeals to a wide array of practices and interests. This is an opportunity that many of us can take advantage of.Resources:Learn more: https://nakiagray.com/ & https://graylegalpc.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NakiaGrayEsq Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nakiagrayesq/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/nakiagrayesq LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nakiagrayesq/ Website: beyondthebarinstitute.comEmail: [email protected] Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to http://ruby.com/ or call 844.311.7829 The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 341341. Documenting Processes for Law Firm Success with Randa Prendergast

My guest today is Randa Prendergast. Randa is the Attorney Whisperer. She runs a paralegal and legal administrative support service out of Columbus, Ohio called Mrs. June Legal. We talk a great deal about how attorneys can leverage a company such as Randa’s, to really gain a handle on growing their practice and expanding the reach of their law firm. In this episode, Neil and Randa discuss:Having an excellent support staff to have a successful law firm. Recruiting and retaining enthusiastic, competent staff who want to work. Identifying and documenting processes, procedures, and workflows. Perfecting processes through practice. Key Takeaways:In most processes and the workflow of a case, an attorney typically only needs to be involved directly with 2 or 3 of those tasks - the rest can be assigned to a paralegal or legal admin.Working with an experienced recruiting company can help you to understand what type of help you may need in your firm to allow you, as the lawyer, to do the things that only you can do. Talking through your processes and procedures with another person can help you to understand exactly what is happening and where any pitfalls may be. Growth comes through small, incremental improvements in your baseline processes and procedures. "No one is going to be as successful as you want them to be if you don't have any processes. They can be intelligent and have experience, but if they're constantly having to ask you how you want something done, because it is your business, that it's going to cause you stress and no one is going to be successful." — Randa Prendergast Get in touch with Randa Prendergast:Website: www.mrsjunelegal.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/attorneywhisperer/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/attorneywhisper Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/attorneywhisperer/ Email: [email protected] Join Lawyer Club FREE, where lawyers and law firm owners come to reclaim control of their firms and their lives! S1 Ep 340340. Building and Turning Your Flywheel with Brian LaBovick

Today’s guest is Brian LaBovick. Brian started his legal career in the prosecutor’s office and has since gone on to start his own firm (along with several other businesses and non-profit organizations) which has grown to 15 lawyers and 80 employees. One of the reasons why I had to have him on the show, is because he hasn't forgotten how he made the progress from working out of the backseat of his car, so to speak, to where he is now. And he shares freely his advice and his experiences. I think you're going to get a real insight into how somebody plowed his successes back into the business and what that allowed him to leverage things over the course of years, and really, really develop something special. In this episode, Neil and Brian discuss:How Brian built up his firm to 15 lawyers and 80 support staff. Where to get started with your law firm marketing. Challenges to staffing and marketing. Processes and systems for a well-functioning law firm. Key Takeaways:You can’t be hesitant to spend money to make money. Without marketing, you will not likely be around as a law firm for very long. Building up your marketing takes time, and you will not be spending the same amount of money as a larger firm from day one. Don’t try and bring people onto your team who do not fit your culture. Hire slow and well, and fire fast when someone doesn’t fit. There will be a lot of “nos” before you get your “yeses”. Don’t lose hope and just keep going. "You are the best investment that you're ever going to find. No stock is going to be better than you. Invest in you and your business model. That's what makes your dream come true." — Brian LaBovick Get in touch with Brian LaBovick:Website: https://www.brianlabovick.com/ Website: https://www.labovick.com/ Phone: 866-LaBovick Book: https://www.brianlabovick.com/the-book YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/LaBovick Twitter: https://twitter.com/LaBovickLaw Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Florida.Lawyers/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brian-labovick-40032a9/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/labovicklawgroup/ Join Lawyer Club FREE, where lawyers and law firm owners come to reclaim control of their firms and their lives! S1 Ep 339339. Building a Law Firm to Support Your Dream Life with Wendy Witt

Today, my guest is Wendy Witt. Wendy is an attorney, starting another new law firm in the estate planning area, but she's also well known as a law business practice development coach. There are a couple of amazing things that Wendy does in terms of the branding of her coaching practice, and the leveling of services that she offers. I think it's really interesting and is not, frankly, done by a lot of coaches. This makes her unique and really accessible to solo and small firm practitioners, particularly those that don't have a big budget to hire a coach. Listen in for some great takeaways! In this episode, Neil and Wendy discuss:Adapting and changing within the practice of law. Transitioning from big law to a solo practice.Building a business that supports the life you dream of. Understanding your driving forces. Key Takeaways:Everything is a business, even helping people and practicing law.Business is a skill set that can be learned, and should be learned, by solo and small firm owners. There are so many resources, for free, out there for solo and small firm attorneys. You need to be willing to take the advice and change the sails to create the life that you want. How you get to your goal may not look like how someone else is getting to their goal. Everyone is different in their wants, strengths, and choices. "Not only is the business strategy essential, but the mindset is also essential. S1 Ep 337337. Being Different in Practicing Law with Owen McGrann

Today, my guest is Owen McGrann. Owen is a fellow solo practitioner, a small firm owner (in fact he owns two small firms), and a fellow guitarist. We will shed some light on how we view the practice of law, how it relates to our clients, and other issues, for those of you who are still struggling with trying to understand where that fits in in your practice. In this episode, Neil and Owen discuss:Building a law firm (and then a second law firm). Understanding what sales really is. Moving away from the billable hour. Knowing your pricing is priced correctly. Key Takeaways:As an estate planner, what you are selling is peace of mind, not just your service. You are not sitting down and billing time. As a lawyer, you are changing people’s lives. Time is not a unit of value. An hour is a unit of time, not a monetary unit. The only way you can scale an hourly model is to bring more attorneys into your firm. "It is important for our customers to understand what it is that we're doing for them, and to help them make the decisions. S1 Ep 335335. Increasing Efficiencies and Communication with Jonathan Rosenfeld

Today, my guest is Jonathan Rosenfeld. Jonathan is the principal owner and creator of his law firm, a personal injury law firm outside of Chicago. In our conversation today, we'll talk a lot about the nuances of a personal injury practice, particularly in light of the fact that post-pandemic, many law firms are becoming more virtualized, and work is being done more in a remote fashion. We also look at this way of doing business in the personal injury space and if it lends itself to that type of workflow or not. Listen in to another great conversation! In this episode, Neil and Jonathan discuss:The evolution of personal injury law firms with the increase in remote work. Flexible work options and hiring successful employees. Increasing efficiency and decreasing human error through automation and systems. Appropriately conveying information to clients and juries. Key Takeaways:The commute is a waste of time for most people. If your employees have more flexibility in where and when they work, they will happily get their work done regardless of where and when they are working. Case intake has increasingly moved out of the 9 to 5 timeframe as people submit inquiries online or even call outside of standard office hours. Over time, the type of cases you see will help you to develop your systems, automations, and how the resources in your office will be divided. Prepare, prepare, prepare. The preparation for trial begins with how the work is handled from the beginning of the case. "Without systems, there are a lot of opportunities in this business for errors. These are errors, which not only affect your business but, ultimately, they can affect the client's case and it’s really hard to undo that type of damage." — Jonathan RosenfeldGet in touch with Jonathan Rosenfeld:Website: https://www.rosenfeldinjurylawyers.com/ Website: https://camplejeuneusa.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Rosenfeld.Injury.Lawyers YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/rosenfeldinjurylaw Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to http://ruby.com/ or call 844.311.7829 Legal Funnels - You're feeling overwhelmed, overworked, and you feel like you're doing everything yourself because you lack the systems, procedures, and automations you need for your law firm to run without you... S1 Ep 334334. Standing Out as a Solo Law Firm with Taylor Darcy

Today, my guest is Taylor Darcy. Taylor is a business attorney and small firm practitioner out of San Diego, California, who has been a longtime listener of the podcast here. I am delighted to have Taylor on the program. Today, we're going to spend quite a bit of time talking about his journey, but maybe more to the point, Taylor is one of the biggest advocates and users of YouTube videos, particularly live YouTube video sessions, to market and promote his law firm and set it apart from others in the San Diego area. We get into the weeds about YouTube marketing, and YouTube content development. So I hope that's important, useful information that you can turn around and using your practice. In this episode, Neil and Taylor discuss:Creating a brand approach in naming your law firm. Marrying planning and action for your business success. Carrying prior experiences and careers into your law practice. Creative marketing that provides value. Key Takeaways:Hope and prayer is not a strategy for business. While it can be what you do as well, you must plan and do it in order to succeed in your business. Often the executives are no smarter than you are, they took a chance where you did not and took action where you sat back. Efficiencies, automation, and client experience can set you apart and make you competitive as a small or solo law firm. YouTube is the second most searched search engine in the world. It takes less time than you think and provides a largely untapped market that most lawyers do not venture into. "If you're providing good and meaningful content, people don't care if you say ‘um’. People recognize that you're a human being, and a lot of them are too afraid to do it themselves. They're not going to judge you. Honestly, anybody that's going to give you a hard time over your mistakes aren't somebody that you're going to want to work with anybody anyway." — Taylor Darcy Get in touch with Taylor Darcy:Website: https://thinklegalpc.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ThinkLegalPC LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/taylordarcyesq/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/thinklegalpc/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinklegalpc/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thinklegalpc Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thinklegalpc Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to http://ruby.com/ or call 844.311.7829 Legal Funnels - You're feeling overwhelmed, overworked, and you feel like you're doing everything yourself because you lack the systems, procedures, and automations you need for your law firm to run without you... S1 Ep 333333. Understanding the Art of Leverage with David Neagle

My guest today is David Neagle. He is a business consultant who doesn't focus exclusively on legal clients but has a great many of them. We spend a fair amount of time talking about how the legal realm of business fits in with a general overall schema of how a business operates in this country and around the world. S1 Ep 332332. Building a Thriving Personal Injury Practice with Brian Beckcom

Today, my guest is Brian Beckcom. Brian runs a law firm out of Houston, Texas, which is a very successful personal injury law firm that has been growing for the past 20+ years and has had some really interesting cases. We talk a lot about how you go from the initial small law firm and how you take it to that next level with multiple attorneys, lots of staff, and a well-run business that allows you the opportunity to, as he says, spend as much time away from the office as he does inside the office. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. In this episode, Neil and Brian discuss:Brian’s journey to building his own personal injury practice. The quantum steps from starting a practice to a thriving business. Productivity, efficiency, and having the right people in the right seats.Ways to write a book (and make it fast and easy!). Key Takeaways:Insurance companies pay millions to stop people from suing others so they don’t have to pay, but they are the first to sue for any slight. Build your firm understanding what you want your life to be like. Build your firm around that.If you want to grow your firm without going insane, you must have the right people around you, in the right seats, and doing the right job. If you’ve been writing a blog, sending newsletters, or making videos for your business for years, you’ve already got the content for a book, it just needs to be repurposed and reformatted. "Don't think necessarily about what you want your business to look like, think about what you want your life to look like and then the business fits into that piece." — Brian Beckcom Get in touch with Brian Beckcom:Website: https://www.brianbeckcom.org/ Website: https://www.vbattorneys.com/ Podcast: https://www.brianbeckcom.org/tag/podcast-episodes YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/VBAttorneys LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brianbeckcom/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brianbeckcomlawyer/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/BrianBeckcom Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/vbattorneys Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to www.ruby.com or call 844.311.7829Legal Funnels - You're feeling overwhelmed, overworked, and you feel like you're doing everything yourself because you lack the systems, procedures, and automations you need for your law firm to run without you... S1 Ep 331331. Email Marketing That Gets Noticed with Tom Kulzer

Today, my guest is Tom Kulzer. Tom is the founder and creator and CEO of AWeber, which is one of the leading email marketing platforms in the industry. We talk about email marketing, and how that continues to be one of the primary forms of digital marketing that continues today, even though we all hate getting email spam. And when you think of email marketing, it's that fine line that balances between email spam and marketing. So Tom and I spend a lot of time talking about that, how you can improve your email marketing system, and maybe a brief glimpse as to what the future may provide. In this episode, Neil and Tom discuss:Email as the dominator in the content marketing field. The evolution of email marketing. Why to choose email over (or in addition to) social media marketing. What to look for in working with an email marketing company. Key Takeaways:Done right, email is the absolute best way to connect with your clients around the world. Behave how you want to receive and engage with emails. Email campaigns can be a great way to get information to your clients at regular intervals and inform them about your subject matter. Providing valuable information to your clients in email communication is key no matter what industry you are in. "Everyone's definition of what is spam is different. In the legal world, it's one thing. To the end user, the way that I define spam is emails that people don't want." — Tom Kulzer Get in touch with Tom Kulzer:Website: https://www.aweber.com/ Website: https://tomkulzer.com/ Email: [email protected] LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tomkulzer/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tomkulzer/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/tkulzer Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to www.ruby.com or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 330330. From Struggle to Sale with Mike Chastaine

Today, my guest is Mike Chastaine. Mike is an attorney outside of Sacramento, California, who has a thriving criminal defense practice. I say that he has a criminal defense practice, in actuality, he's transitioning out of that practice and has already moved to New Mexico. So we're going to cover his journey from how he got started in criminal defense and how he, with the help of a couple of mentors, turned the ship around from being a struggling criminal defense firm to a thriving firm to the point where he was able to sell it. We're going to spend some time talking about the mechanics of how you go about selling a law firm, how you go about valuing the firm for sale, and structuring the purchase. We're going to cover a whole journey here in this episode, so let's get with it. Without any further delay, Mike Chastaine. In this episode, Neil and Mike discuss:From struggling firm to thriving firm ready for sale. Mentorship and running a great business (not just being a great lawyer). Filling the holes in your office. Hiring for a specific position and having clear, direct standards. Competing on value, not on price. Key Takeaways:Mistake #1: you cannot do it all and do it well. Hiring someone to do your books is a leap of faith, but it will increase your billable hours without spending additional time. Without having a follow-up system, things will fall through the cracks. There will always be things that you can’t predict, but you can prepare for that percentage of unpredictability. Having clear procedures and policies not only allows your staff to know what is expected at all times but also makes transitioning out of the firm easier. "I basically went from running things on a gut level to running it based on true data. Today my guest is Kirk Tarman. Kirk is a criminal defense attorney in Southern California, and we have a great conversation about his journey. He's spent the better part of nearly 25 years being a criminal defense attorney and a solo practitioner, occasionally with some staff members, but currently a true solo practitioner with some support staff. We cover all the bases and the unique aspects of what it means to be a criminal defense attorney. I hope you find some value in this and enjoy the conversation. In this episode, Neil and Kirk discuss:Running a solo criminal defense practice. The power of negotiation. Why organization is so important in running your law firm. Being familiar with technology and courtrooms. Key Takeaways:Every person and every story is different and deserves to have context and understand the unique characteristics of their case. Everyone deserves representation. Life is complicated and full of gray areas. No matter where you go, where you are known in a community, you will be the top-of-mind lawyer if people get to know who you are. Utilize the technology available to you to make your argument more persuasive. "The only way to deal with the stress, the true way, is to prepare, work hard, and know, at the end of the day, no matter what happens, that you've done a really good job, and you've done everything that could be done." — Kirk TarmanGet in touch with Kirk Tarman:Twitter: https://twitter.com/kirktarman Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kirktarmanlaw/ Website: https://www.tarmanlaw.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kirk-tarman-105aa377/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kirk_tarman_law/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to www.ruby.com or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 328328. Relocating & Reinventing Your Life & Career with Elise Buie

This is a classic re-run of my episode with Elise Buie. Elise Buie had to evacuate and leave her life in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina, leading to a winding journey across the country that ultimately landed her in Seattle, Washington, where she now practices family law. She’s had to reinvent herself a number of times through this process but she’s always been able to make it work because, as you’ll hear in this episode, she’s a very personal and personable person, which is also reflected in her firm culture and how she practices law.We also discuss some of the challenges and difficulties when it comes to getting a new job in this profession, as someone who is a little older (in my case) or already has a large family. A lot of firms want to hire a young, unattached associate who they can keep for 20 years – and that can make finding a job especially difficult if, like Elise or myself, you are forced to relocate or choose to change careers in the middle of your professional journey. Resources:Learn more at elisebuiefamilylaw.comFacebook: facebook.com/elisebuiefamilylawTwitter: twitter.com/elisebuieLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/elise-elizabeth-buie-426ba920 Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to www.ruby.com or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. S1 Ep 327327. Being Different and Practicing Law with Humanity with A.J. Grossman III

Today my guest is A.J. Grossman, III. A.J. is the owner of a law firm in Orlando, Florida that specializes in and focuses exclusively on the area of family law. We trace his journey from law school to getting an LLM in dispute resolution to opening a practice with his wife (which presents its own challenges) to going back into big law and then coming back out of big law, but opening up his current iteration of family law called Leap Frog Divorce and he's got some great observations about all that transition from one step to another. Listen in for another great episode. In this episode, Neil and A.J. discuss:How A.J. got into family law and how his LLM helps him in his practice. Working in a field of law that you enjoy and practicing in a way that you believe in. Transitioning between big law and your own practice. Having a consistent message and understanding of how marketing can help your firm. Key Takeaways:Family law often gets a bad reputation, but it is about making your clients’ lives better at the end of the day. Everybody has a different story and each story is unique. When working with your spouse, it is important to communicate with one another on what is needed to now allow only work to take over your personal life. Be willing to be different. In other industries, people stand out with unique branding, in both name and image. Do the same thing in your firm. "I'm trying to deliver a better divorce experience - better for children, better for the spouses. Ep 324324. Building Your Brand in Entertainment Law with Joshua Lastine

Joshua Lastine is an entertainment lawyer in Beverly Hills, CA. His story is a little bit of iconic Hollywood story, although it's a little different - young man leaves the central plains of the Midwest, heads to California to make his fame and fortune, goes law school at Pepperdine, and does just that by becoming an entertainment attorney handling all manners of the business of the entertainment industry. I think, oftentimes, we think of entertainment law as being solely centered on an agency representing the talent that performs. But as you'll hear from Joshua, it's much, much more than that with many more opportunities. I had a great time chatting with Joshua, and I hope you enjoy that conversation. In this episode, Neil and Joshua discuss:What entertainment law is and how it intersects with Hollywood. Understanding the business of entertainment and the business of law. The contracts that go into making content. The influence of collective bargaining and unions in the entertainment industry. Key Takeaways:Entertainment is about making a product and starts with an initial good idea that needs to be bought, sold, developed, and everything in between, just like anything else. Building your firm is all about who you know, networking, and building relationships. To hire in the current market, you need to have interest aligned between where you and your firm are going and where the possible incoming attorney wants to go. As an entertainment lawyer, you are a vocal advocate for doing what is right, making sure that everyone is kind of paid, and everyone gets what they deserve. "Right now it's such a hot job market that you really have to have your interests completely aligned, in terms of where you want your business and company to go and where your employee sees themselves where they want to go because they have opportunities pretty much everywhere." — Joshua Lastine Get in touch with Joshua Lastine:Website: https://lastineimpressions.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshua-lastine-b3632b42/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/lastinelaw Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to www.ruby.com or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. My guest is Gerard Virga. Gerard is the managing director of a law firm in central and northern Florida that spans six different locations. This is the second law firm that he built to include a number of attorneys and staff spread out over six locations. So we're going to spend some time talking about how that happened, what things he used and took advantage of to achieve that growth when his views are about the work-life balance and customer relations and all those things that are important for growing a law firm to the successful practice that he has done. In this episode, Neil and Gerard discuss:What motivates Gerard as a family practice lawyer. Honor and empathy in law. The key to growing from one location to multiple.Riding the wave of changing technology. Key Takeaways:Family law requires caring for the person and having empathy for them, even when it is difficult and emotions are high. Cases are not like they are in movies and television. It takes longer than expected and is more complex that we see in Hollywood. If you don’t believe in yourself and your product, neither will anyone else. Anyone can run an office, but you need to have a team that has the same vision and goal as you do and shares your firm’s values. "People do not like lawyers; people do not like talking to lawyers. Today, my guest is Ryann Peyton. Ryan serves as the Director of the Colorado Attorney Mentoring Program (CAMP), as well as Legal Entrepreneurs for Justice in the great state of Colorado. She is a former litigator (as she'd like to say, a reformed attorney) and she now lends her skills as an advocate for professionalism, diversity, and equity in the legal field, particularly through her role as the director of these two programs. We talk about a wide range of subjects, including the partnerships that they’re developing with these programs in the commercial world outside of the association. She’s delightful, and I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. In this episode, Neil and Ryann discuss:Finding your passion (and having permission to change your mind). What Bar Associations can do to bolster and sustain the next generation of lawyers. How CAMP helps its constituents. Being part of programs to build mentorship and networking to make a difference. Key Takeaways:If law firms and bar associations don’t recognize the changes in technology, they will not be able to sustain the profession and those practicing in it. At any stage of your career, it is important to have a mentor that can help support you with where you are and where you want to go. All the skills in the world will not overcome bad behavior. Ep 320320. Fitting Wellness Into Your Life with Carl Ficks

Today my guest is Carl Ficks. Carl is a 30 year litigator who has now pivoted and started a new business called No Surrender that focuses on wellness and physical wellbeing for attorneys and other professional services types. We're going to talk about why fitness and wellness is so important to attorneys and the legal profession, and some of the really sobering statistics about the extent to which we aren't paying attention to our own health needs as we try and navigate the world of being a solo or small firm practitioner. I will tell you, in all candor, this is going to be kind of a true confessional episode, because I really feel like I'm the poster boy for the kind of client that Carl is trying to reach. So we're gonna get a little personal here. I hope you don't get tired of hearing my own shortcomings, but I think that's the best way to illustrate what Carl is trying to do and what services he has to offer. There is something for everyone here. In this episode, Neil and Carl discuss:Taking care of your health for busy professionals. The first steps to wellness (hint: start small). Tips and tricks to establish consistency in your wellness. The positive, upward trend in lawyer health and wellness. Key Takeaways:You are your own best asset. You need to treat it the way that you would treat your brand new dream car. Self care is not selfish. If you don’t take care of yourself, you will not be able to show up as your best self in your communities or with your clients. Celebrate how far you’ve come and the changes that you make along the way. You can’t cut corners in the practice of law, and you can’t cut corners in fitness. "Focus on the gain, not the yawning gap that may lay in front of you." — Carl Ficks Get in touch with Carl Ficks:Website: https://carlficks.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carlrficksjr/ 10 Simple Steps to Get Back in the Game: https://carlficks.com/free Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. Ep 319319. Achieving a Gold Standard Client Experience with Charlotte Isaac

Today, my guest is Charlotte Isaac. Charlotte is an expert in the client experience; she looks at helping professional services companies, such as law firms, develop their end to end client experience, and primarily assisting them in automating the whole process as best they can, often using a platform called Dubsado. Although she's not affiliated with the company, she uses the Dubsado platform to help professional services providers to automate the entire end to end client experience. We talk about what's involved in defining that experience, and how you can translate that using a tool such as Dubsado. I think it has a lot of relevance for US attorneys, and I hope you enjoy listening to Charlotte Isaac as much as I enjoyed having the conversation. In this episode, Neil and Charlotte discuss:The client experience from start to finish. Identifying shortcomings in your client experience. Being consistent in your client experience. How Charlotte uses Dubsado to help her own clients (and how you can too!). Key Takeaways:You are the expert at your own client experience. Understand what you are already doing and from there you can flesh out that experience. Find the balance between automation and personalization. With software, you can automate some of that personalization and framework so every client is getting the best experience possible. Engage and connect with your clients even beyond just their case. It will give you a clearer picture of your client and help you to understand how you can amplify the client experience and better serve them. Build your client connection where, even when automated, it looks like it is coming directly from you. You do not want to send things to “Dear Client”. "Building empathy and a connection with your clients is a huge way to build referrals in a very non-sleazy way." — Charlotte Isaac Get in touch with Charlotte Isaac:Website: https://charlotteisaac.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/charlotteisaachq/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charlotteisaachq/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com.au/charlotteisaachq/ Enroll in Charlotte’s FREE Course: https://charlotteisaac.com/tle Reference: Dubsado: https://www.dubsado.com/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder.
