EBye Bye, Edmonton! #PLAYOFFSHIT has the boys reeling after the Colorado Avalanche sweep the Edmonton Oilers on the way to the Stanley Cup Final. Cale Makar was electric throughout the series and accomplished a feat that only a few defensemen in the history of the NHL have been able to do. Joey is thrilled as he hated the Oilers the second they signed Evander Kane and hopes that they bring him back so they give him an excuse to root against them in the future. For the Eastern Conference Final, Jeff and Joey breakdown exactly what's going on as well as how game 4 is a must-win for the New York Rangers more so than the Tampa Bay Lightning. Joey continues to gush over Igor and Jeff brings up Kress from last week's episode and his take on him as well as stating that in the future they'll be bringing him back on the podcast. In Kraken news, the two discuss the hot topic of replacing Hakstol as well as what free agents have a chance of landing in Seattle and around the NHL. Last, a Twitter survey on the hotness levels of every team was revealed and the Kraken lost to the Vancouver Canucks which the two adamantly disagree with. The two give their predictions before moving on to discuss "Unrivaled," the upcoming ESPN60 documentary that covers the rivalry between the Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings. Jeff hasn't seen the trailer yet and attempts to watch it but has to stop 15 seconds in as he starts to tear up. The two make a surprise phone call to Jeff's lifelong buddy Mike who breaks down the playoffs and compares it to NHL players of the past and why he hates the Western Conference Finals. Ep 20Happy Mardi Gras! Kraken Reaction: JT and Everett make history, Gio's return, and Brad Marchand. #NoDumbQuestions: two-pad stacker? Hockey History with Jeff: the evolution of Goalie equipment.
EIt's Mardi Gras season and the boys are feeling it. Kraken Reaction has Jeff and Joey breaking down the Seattle Kraken's Canadian road trip and all of the things that went right and wrong in last week's 0-3 record starting with the Kraken getting pegged in Winnipeg after getting stomped at home by one of the NHL's best, the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team started the game quickly up 2-0 and in typical Kraken Shit form, gave up a goal with 12.9 seconds left in the 1st period and ultimately losing 5-3 with an empty net dagger. In Calgary, we saw the return of their former Captain Mark Giordano and the Kraken hung tough against the red hot Flames but it wasn't enough and ended up falling 2-1 despite Grubauer's 35 saves on an historic night in the NHL with Everett Fitzhugh and JT Brown calling it from the broadcast booth as the first ever all black broadcasting team in NHL history. The boys cover how much they love being a part of an organization that goes out of its way to recognize and provide opportunities for minorities to thrive in the world of hockey as well as the touching Gio tribute and a credit to everyone who has to work at the Saddledome covering games risking their lives on their (likely illegal) catwalk. Next, Jeff and Joey preview upcoming matchups versus the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins at home before the Kraken are once again on the road facing the San Jose Sharks. Did you know that the city of San Jose has trees as well as four separate Wendy's locations?! Joey predicts an epic battle with Boston is coming up in his "game of the week" after the controversial hit Yanni Gourde dished out in their last match up as well as Brad Marchand returning from suspension. The two again discuss Brad Marchand, his history in the league, and Jeff defends his stance on wanting a guy like Marchand on the Kraken if they ever get the chance. No Dumb Questions has Joey ask Jeff what exactly is a two-pad stacker and why is it so special after witnessing a beautiful one by Jacob Markstrok on an Eberle shot attempt in Calgary. Ep 19Two words: Hockey. Porn. Kraken Reaction: ESPN broadcast fail, Big Rig tilt, Canada fun facts. #NoDumbQuestions: un-written fighting rules? Hockey History with Jeff: biggest trades in NHL history.
EHappy Valentine's Day from Jeff and Joey! The boys' spend an intimate night with each other discussing the Seattle Kraken and the NHL. Kraken Reaction starts off by breaking down what went wrong in the team's match up against the Arizona Coyotes at home as well as everything that went right in their away game versus the Anaheim Ducks. Are the Seattle Kraken a team that just plays to the level of their opponent? Joey once again shared his admiration for John Forslund (happy birthday!) and JT Brown after the ESPN broadcast team had multiple erros when calling the match up in Anaheim as well as jumped all over Vince Dunn's case for slashing without mentioning the penalty on Trevor Zegras beforehand that initiated the entire incident. Jeff doubles down on his admiration for Dunn and the two transition into sharing their thoughts on Marisa Ingemi, why the Seattle Times fired her in the middle of the season, and thank her for her contributions to the Seattle Kraken organization. Next, Joey previews the upcoming match ups against the Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames, and Vancouver Canucks by sharing some Canadian fun facts for each city the Kraken will be visiting; including a very unique nickname given to the residents of Winnipeg. Jeff and Joey discuss the rise of the Calgary Flames, who are currently on a six-game win streak as well as their blockbuster trade that happened earlier in the day when they made a move to acquire Tyler Toffoli from the Montreal Canadiens and why many fans refer to the Flames as the Calgary Canucks. #NoDumbQuestions has Joey asking Jeff what initiates a tilt in hockey and what are the un-written rules of fighting after watching Jamie Oleksiak roll up the sleeves against Nicolas Deslauriers in Anaheim in his first game back for the Seattle Kraken and why that fight was considered 'old school' and one of the best in the NHL this season. Last, Hockey History with Jeff has him covering the greatest trades in NHL history, including the trade that elevated the sport of hockey when the Edmonton Oilers sent Wayne Gretzky to play in LA with the Los Angeles Kings. Ep 18We're ready for more hockey, baby! Kraken Reaction: NHL All-Star Weekend, game previews. #NoDumbQuestions why did VGK fans boo Tom Wilson? Hockey History with Jeff: greatest moments in NHL All-Star history.
EIt feels like the Kraken haven't played in a year. Kraken Reaction has the boys breaking down NHL All-Star weekend and their biggest takeaways from the skills challenges...since they both admit to missing the All-Star game itself. Joey sounds off on a controversy involving Jon Hamm, a young equipment manager, and John Hughes to dethrone the true winner of the breakaway skills challenge, Anaheim Ducks Center Trevor Zegras. The two also discuss how awkward hockey players can be in interviews and why Jeff isn't impressed with the fastest shot challenge until they start reaching 105+ on the radar gun. Last week's matchups versus the Boston Bruins and the New York Islanders are recapped before Jeff and Joey go over this week's coming match ups versus the Arizona Coyotes, Anaheim Duck, and Toronto Maple Leafs. #NoDumbQuestions has a friend of the pod submit a question during NHL All-Star weekend inquiring as to why the Las Vegas Golden Knights fan base booed Tom Wilson every time he was announced over the weekend. The history of Tom Wilson is discussed, including his borderline-illegal hit on Vegas leading scorer Jonathan Marchessault in the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals as well as his history with some players currently on the Seattle Kraken including Alex Wennberg in the first round of the 2018 playoffs when he was was with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Wilson hit him with a flying elbow. Oddly enough, Wilson is well-respected around the league, including by guys like Jordan Eberle who is quoted as saying that a player like him is one you want to have on your team for the playoffs in order to win games and advance. Last, Hockey History with Jeff covers some of the greatest moments in NHL All-Star Game history, including Wayne Gretzky's four goals in the 3rd period to win the MVP. Ep 17Buckle up, this gets weird. Kraken Reaction: 1st OT win, no call conspiracy in The Garden, Cincinnati Chili, and Guy Fieri. #NoDumbQuestions: face offs. Hockey History with Jeff: history of the biscuit.
EJeff and Joey recap last week's Seattle Kraken games starting with the loss at home to the Nashville Predators where Jeff's hockey-instincts came to fruition and Vince Dunn emerged as his favorite player / enforcer the team needs and Joey wasn't too fond of the ESPN broadcasting crew because he's been spoiled with John Forslund and JT Brown. Next, in what might be the surprise game of the season and the best game they've played all year, the Seattle Kraken beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 in their barn and also notch their first overtime win in franchise history. A great start to the road trip is quickly squashed as the matchup versus the New York Islanders is postponed due to weather and the Kraken suffer a brutal loss at Madison Square Garden the following day after a blown no-call in what Joey believes was no mistake. Next, the boys preview the back-to-back match ups of the Boston Bruins and Islanders (again) before discussing the All-Star break, what special events the city of Las Vegas will be putting on for it, and how the breakaway challenge is being revitalized from 2016. Jeff attempts to do an ad read but is interrupted by Joey's love for Joe Burrow and the two end up discussing Cincinnati, chili, and how Jeff hung out with Guy Fieri. For #NoDumbQuestions a friend of the pod on Twitter asked about how face offs come about, what determines where they are held, and why players get yanked from them from time to time. Last, Hockey History with Jeff has him talking about the history of the puck as well as his own personal history with street hockey growing up in Detroit and how he's currently grooming his son to play in the NHL and the boys reminisce on their favorite hockey movies. Ep 16WE YEET THE FISH! Kraken Reaction: winning games, New York recap, Turbo is back. #NoDumbQuestions what's a slew foot? Hockey History with Jeff: the dirtiest players in NHL history.
EIn this house, we yeet the fish! Jeff has Joey recap a little of his New York trip after just landing back in New Orleans before the boys go into the Kraken Reaction. The Seattle Kraken are 3-1 in their last 4 games and are looking to get one more win before hitting the road. Jeff and Joey dissect the past week's games versus the San Jose Sharks, the St. Louis Blues and what could potentially be a rivalry, and the Florida Panthers matchup and how the Kraken seemingly has the number of one of the best teams in the NHL. The loss to St. Louis doesn't count if Davy Jones wasn't in attendance, by the way. Next, upcoming games versus the Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Islanders, and New York Rangers are discussed, analyzed, and key items to look for in each game are shared. Jeff calls out Joey for sharing a tweet about spending a night in a McDonald's bathroom in New York and Joey shares how he wound up there before he goes into what's so special about Madison Square Garden, his experience attending his first NHL game there, and what people should know about it if they ever make it to a game. For #NoDumbQuestions, a friend of the pod asks what a Slew Foot is - Joey explains it and Jeff discusses how Vince Dunn doing it against St. Louis in the 3rd period could lead to a rivalry, plus how every fan loves to root against the dirtiest player but when that player is on their team they love it. In Hockey History with Jeff, he goes on an EPIC storytelling rant about the dirtiest hockey players in NHL history and how Claude Lemieux's hit in the playoffs one season led to one of the most legendary goalie on goalie fights the sport has ever seen. EHoly HELL what a win! Jeff and Joey are coming in guns blazing following a shootout Seattle Kraken victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night. Credit is given to Marc Andre Fleury before they talked about McCann getting robbed, Borgen defending his teammates, Hakstol playing puppetmaster in overtime, Donskoi skating off a hero, and of course the newest addition to the Seattle Kraken, Davy Jones. Jeff shares his love for the storyline that is being played out with the Kraken's upcoming schedule before bringing up Joey's upcoming trip to New York and how Wednesday night he will be at Madison Square Garden for his first ever NHL game to watch the Rangers take on the Maple Leafs, an original-six match up. Next, the boys talk about Jordan Eberle's All-Star selection, his history with it, and the impact he has had on the Seattle Kraken as well as how the All-Star game is constructed and what events to keep an eye on. For #NoDumbQuestions, Jeff further breaks down line changes and how the context of the game can drastically impact how and when they are done as well as how teams try to use line changes their advantage to tire out an opponent or catch them off-guard. The boys also talk about the new pre-game ceremony that was unveiled at Climate Pledge Arena, give their thoughts on it, and how they're still anxiously awaiting the mascot reveal. Ep 14We need more coffee. Kraken Reaction: Grubi returns to Colorado, Mardi Gras, and trade rumors. #NoDumbQuestions: +/- and Hockey History with Jeff: international player influence on the NHL.
ESeattle Kraken hockey is back! Jeff and Joey pound coffee and break down what went right and what went wrong with last night's game against the Colorado Avalanche. How Grubauer needs help from the team in order to stay hot, the fans singing along to Blink 182, McCann firing a laser from the boards, and what the hell is the difference between a deflection and a kicked puck are all discussed. The boys' go on to discuss Mardi Gras and explain why they've been eating so much King Cake, how they should plan a trip to Dallas to catch the Kraken face off against the Stars, and exactly what Mardi Gras Krewes are composed of and how it all ties into Mardi Gras Day. The boys also break down the comping road swing against the Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues followed by the upcoming home games at Climate Pledge Arena versus the LA Kings and Chicago Blackhawks. Jeff segways into trade rumors and the possibility of dealing Mark Giordano and Chris Driedger is discussed before they go into #NoDumbQuestions which covers the +/- statistic in the NHL and exactly how relevant it is in the game which gives Joey an excuse to bring up Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners after somehow thinking he saw a stat that showed Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues having a +/- of +150 on the season. Last, Hockey History with Jeff has him breaking down just how many international players we see in the NHL today, how that is drastically different from what the landscape looked like as early as two decades ago, and the story of Alexander Mogilny - a Russian hockey player who defected to the United States and risked his life to play in the NHL and why the "Miracle on Ice" in the 1980 Winter Olympics when the United States defeated the Soviet Union was such a big deal for the sport. EJeff and Joey recap the past three Kraken games against the Oilers, Sabres, and Coyotes before trying to make sense of what the hell happened in Arizona versus the Coyotes. Spoiler alert: they're still confused and upset. Together they discuss a number of team issues ranging from how Hakstol is handling his goalie rotation to their inefectiveness on the power play before deep diving into what's really going on with Philipp Grubauer and his utilization. Next, Jeff and Joey are split on how they feel about the Coachella Valley Firebirds logo but agree that they're both really excited for the Kraken to have an official American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate starting next season before attempting to break down and explain the minor league hockey system in the U.S. and Canada in this week's No Dumb Questions. The history and "why" behind the Jack Eichel trade from Buffalo to Las Vegas is discussed before the trade details are broken down along with the future impacts of it in the Western Conference. EJeff and Joey recap their Halloween weekend plans and reflect on how their personal dynamic runs parallel to their hockey lives. Kraken Reaction this week has Jeff and Joey breaking down the 4-game homestand in Seattle at Climate Pledge Arena and what they believe that tells us about the Seattle Kraken moving forward as well as what to expect from the team in their upcoming games against Edmonton, Buffalo, and Arizona. The newest post-game ritual in sports, the salmon toss, is discussed and insight is provided on how it originated as well as how it will continue to evolve along with the Seattle Kraken before Jeff and Joey discuss potential mascot ideas before settling on one that's so good Jeff believes a petition is required to demand immediate action. Next, some Twitter love is shown to friends of the pod who not only support 'What Lies Beneath' but also provide valuable insights such as new flavors of hard seltzer available for purchase at the arena. Last, a Brandon Tanev-inspired Hockey History has Jeff sharing some of the weirdest superstitions in the NHL from playoff beards to trophies no one is willing to touch, literally.SubscribeOn All podcasting apps, rate & review on iTunes and Apple Podcasts!Presented by The Hockey Podcast Network with new episodes every week. EKraken Reaction this week has Jeff and Joey dissecting everything that took place in the Seattle Kraken's first ever home opener at Climate Pledge Arena. Jeff and Joey discuss the fans, the atmosphere, the goal horn and song, celebrity sightings, and the game itself after breaking down why Seattle Kraken fans booing NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman was their real indoctrination into the league and why he's deserving of it. Joey challenges Jeff to a game of can you guess how much this alcohol costs as a fun way to talk about the absurd price tags put on alcohol at Climate Pledge Arena, pro-tip: pre game in advance. Next, in honor of Halloween, the first ever Halloween Fantasy NHL Draft is held based off of infamous sci-fi and horror movie villains. Last, Hockey History with Jeff has the story of Clint Malarchuk and how a game between the Buffalo Sabres and St. Louis Blues in 1989 turned into one of the most gruesome injuries in sports history and how not only did Clint survive but he overcame the post-traumatic stress and alcohol abuse following to educate athletes on the importance of mental health.SubscribeOn All podcasting apps, rate & review on iTunes and Apple Podcasts!Presented by The Hockey Podcast Network with new episodes every week. Ep 2The way too early Kraken Reaction, Brandon Tanev love, drinking with 2x Stanley Cup Champion Dustin Penner, Climate Pledge Arena, and Hockey History with Jeff: The Legend of the Octopus and The Rat Trick.
EJeff and Joey recap the first four games of the 2021-2022 season, where the Kraken stand within the Pacific Division, and provide an (entirely too early) outlook on the season based off of what they've seen from the team so far. Joey professes his love for Brandon Tanev before sharing a story about a weekend spent drinking vodka in New Orleans with 2x Stanley Cup Champion Dustin Penner which leads to them hypothesizing on why hockey players can put down more booze than the average human. Next, Jeff believes that opposing teams and fans will find ways to use Climate Pledge Arena as a way to knock the Seattle Kraken but is able to flip that around on them before Joey shares an idea for the home ice goal horn and song for the team that he came across on a Reddit message board. In Hockey History, Jeff shares the origins of The Legend of the Octopus and why throwing them on the ice in Detroit at Joe Louis Arena for Red Wings games when he was a kid was for good luck in the playoffs and how the Rat Trick in Florida for Panthers games came about. Last, Jeff explains to Joey the difference between a forecheck and a cross-check and how penalties are called differently in the NHL playoffs versus the regular season.SubscribeOn All podcasting apps, rate & review on iTunes and Apple Podcasts!Presented by The Hockey Podcast Network with new episodes every week.
