While their rivals, the Seleucids, used Indian elephants, the Ptolemies relied on harder-to-train African species. Despite military successes like the Battle of Raphia, the dynasty eventually began to decline due to the staggering costs of constant warfare and high taxation on Egyptian farmers. This economic strain, coupled with the rise of child kings and internal court factionalism, destabilized the government and left the kingdom vulnerable to its rivals and the emerging power of Rome.
