The focus then shifts to Sinclair Lewis’s *It Can't Happen Here*. Although MGM initially planned a film adaptation, they scrapped it to avoid losing the German market and to appease censors. Hallie Flanagan seized the opportunity, convincing Lewis to adapt the story for a simultaneous theatrical opening in twenty cities. (4)
