Service dogs / Guide dog - the difference
Imagine waking up each day with seemingly insurmountable barriers, yearning for just a glimpse of freedom and independence. This is the reality for many individuals facing disability, including myself. My name is Abongile Xhantini, best known as Abz, a disability rights advocate and champion of inclusion and equity. I navigate the world with the unwavering support of my faithful companion Siddy affectionately known as Pom Pom, my service dog, who has been my guiding light through the darkness of visual impairment and the fluctuations of Complex PTSD for seven years now.
In South Africa, where I reside, the concept of service animals remains largely unknown and inaccessible, especially in underprivileged communities. Having experienced this, and noticing the urgent need to change this, a passion to establish a service dog empowerment programme under Holding Albus was born. Holding Albus is an initiative initially aimed at empowering persons with albinism, like me, but has now extended its reach to encompass all individuals facing disabilities.
