Mauritius issued an appeal to the international community for emergency assistance in this unprecedented ecological catastrophe. On 7th August, nearly two weeks after the Japanese shipwreck, the Mauritian government declared the incident a national emergency. The National Income Dynamics Study Coronavirus Rapid Mobile Survey has found that an estimated three million jobs were lost between February and April due to the Covid-19 pandemic and government restrictions aimed at curbing the spread. The study further found that the number of people who earned an income in February declined by 33% either due to people losing their jobs or being furloughed.
