Don't Have a Weed Wacking Ministry! (Parable of the Sower)

God is the one who separates the wheat from the chaff, but we can be tempted to take this task on ourselves, especially when it comes to our parish. Jeff talks about the Parable of the Sower to explain why we shouldn’t take it upon ourselves to pull up what we may see as weeds at our parish. Snippet from the Show There are people who feel that they have a responsibility to pull up the weeds and decide who stays and who goes in their parish … but God’s desire for conversion is greater than the desire for a tidy parish. SHOWNOTES Matthew 13:24-30, The Parable of the Sower- He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.” 5 Reasons to Stop “Weed Wacking” They might need more time. Luke 13:6 - And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’” St. Thomas More - “No one, on his deathbed, ever regretted having been a Catholic.” You can’t always tell the difference between weeds and wheat. Darnel - a slightly poisonous plant resembling wheat in its early stages of growth. Only when it is fully grown can you tell the difference. The ears of the real wheat are heavy and will droop, while the ears of the darnel stand up straight. We are not smart enough nor do we know the full story of someone else. In other words, it’s above our pay scale. God’s desire for conversion is greater than your need for a tidy parish. We would want others to be patient with us! What if St. Monica had walked away from her son, St. Augustine?

Falling in "Like" with Jesus

If the greatest commandment is to love God, how do we know if we’re actually doing it, or if we’re just falling in “like” with Jesus? To answer this question, Jeff uses Scripture passages on what it means to truly love God. He unpacks what this means for us as disciples who not only SAY they love Jesus, but ACT like they love Jesus. Check out Jeff’s episode, Created for Love, Settling for Likes, for even more Scripture on this topic. Snippet from the Show “We can only obey what we know. If we want to be obedient to God, we have to have some plan to get to know what’s expected of us. That’s what Bible study is about.” SHOWNOTES Matthew 20:20-28 - “Then the mother of the sons of Zeb′edee came up to him, with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. And he said to her, ‘What do you want?’ She said to him, “Command that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.’ But Jesus answered, ‘You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?’ They said to him, ‘We are able.’ He said to them, ‘You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.’ And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave; even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’” Matthew 22:36-40 - “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.” John 14:15 - “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Romans 1:5 - “through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations” John 1:6 - “If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth” Luke 6:46 - “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” Luke 16:13 - “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” John 8:29 - “And he who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him.” Want the shownotes sent directly to your inbox? Breakfast at "Trinity's" and Scriptures on Restoration

Jeff Cavins digs into scriptures on restoration in the Gospel of John and compares Peter’s journey to Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. At some point, both run away from their responsibilities, but eventually turn around and embrace transformative relationships. Do you have comments or questions for Jeff? Email Jeff at [email protected]. You may hear your question or comment in an upcoming podcast episode! Snippet from the Show “Whatever you’ve done, the Lord is able to restore you, and it doesn’t take a fanfare, it oftentimes is a very simple thing.” SHOWNOTES John 18:15-18, Peter Denies Jesus - “Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. As this disciple was known to the high priest, he entered the court of the high priest along with Jesus, while Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the maid who kept the door, and brought Peter in. The maid who kept the door said to Peter, “Are not you also one of this man’s disciples?” He said, “I am not.” Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves; Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. John 18:19-24, The High Priest Questions Jesus - The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together; I have said nothing secretly. Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me, what I said to them; they know what I said.” When he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness to the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?” Annas then sent him bound to Ca′iaphas the high priest. John 18:25-27, Peter Denies Jesus Again - Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, “Are not you also one of his disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” One of the servants of the high priest, a kinsman of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” Peter again denied it; and at once the cock crowed.” John 21:1-14, Jesus Appears to Disciples by the Sea of Tiberias - “After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tibe′ri-as; and he revealed himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathan′a-el of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zeb′edee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat; but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any fish?” They answered him, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.” John 21:15-19, Peter Is Given a Command - “When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where yo

Created for Love, Settling for Likes

We are created to be loved, and to love others. But it’s easy to settle for likes. We feel a boost of ego when someone leaves a flattering comment or shares our post, and it’s satisfying … to a point. But deep inside we all want to be loved, not just liked. Jeff brings up Scripture passages on what it means to be created for love and talks about the things that hold us back from pursuing authentic love. Do you have comments or questions for Jeff? Use the comment box below, or email Jeff at [email protected]. You may hear your question or comment in an upcoming podcast episode! Snippet from the Show “We are created for love, but we settle for likes because of fear, anger, hurt, woundedness, ego, inconvenience, love of money—all of these things can stop us.” SHOWNOTES John 15:13 “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” CCC 545 “Jesus invites sinners to the table of the kingdom: ‘I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.’ He invites them to that conversion without which one cannot enter the kingdom, but shows them in word and deed his Father's boundless mercy for them and the vast ‘joy in heaven over one sinner who repents’. The supreme proof of his love will be the sacrifice of his own life ‘for the forgiveness of sins". John 13:34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” John 17:26 “I made known to them thy name, and I will make it known, that the love with which thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 14:21 “He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” Ephesians 5:25 “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her” John 1:18 “No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known.” What stops the love of God? Fear – fear of opening up your heart Anger – unresolved conflict in our hearts Hurt – go to confession and profess your desire to grow closer to God Woundedness – wounds from our lives that stop us from receiving the love of God Jealousy, Envy, and Inconvenience Ego – believing that we can do it all on our own Love of Money and Career - are our careers keeping us from loving those around us?

Catholic Evangelization: A Target Without a Bullseye?

Ministry programs and apologetics are great, but there’s one area that parishes can often neglect: evangelization. Christians have a mandate to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” But so many Catholics seem to opt out of this and prefer to build programs that service the inner circle instead of welcoming in the larger community. We’re hitting the target, but not the bullseye. Jeff references Scripture passages and the seven parts of the kerygma to inspire outreach and evangelization in your parish and greater community. Having Trouble Sleeping? Scripture is Ambien for the Soul

A go-to response to insomnia typically involves a snack and TV remote, but there are better ways to get real rest and wake up feeling refreshed. Jeff has some advice for those who have difficulty sleeping, and it all comes from Scripture! The topic of sleep is a recurring theme in the Bible, and each verse in this episode provides an instruction about how to quiet the mind and get the rest we crave. Snippet from the Show Worry is where you pay today for something that could possibly happen tomorrow. It keeps us up at night. But Matthew 26:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.” SHOWNOTES Daniel 2:1 - In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnez′zar, Nebuchadnez′zar had dreams; and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep left him. Psalm 121:3-4 - He will not let your foot be moved, he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. Matthew 8:23-24 - And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. Proverbs 6:9-11 - How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a vagabond, and want like an armed man. Proverbs 20:13 - Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty; open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread. Psalm 127:2 - It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. Psalm 36:4 - He plots mischief while on his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good Proverbs 4:14-16 - Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of evil men. Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on. For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong; they are robbed of sleep unless they have made some one stumble. Matthew 6:25-27 - “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?” Matthew 26:32-33 - For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well. Proverbs 3:24-26 - If you sit down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden panic, or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes; for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught. Philippians 4:6-7 - Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Psalm 91:1-5 - He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence; he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, The Lord sustains you Psalm 3:5 - I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the Lord sustains me. Psalm 4:8 - In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for thou alone, O Lord, makest me dwell in safety. Honest day’s work Ecclesiastes 5:12 - Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much; but the surfeit of the rich will not let him sleep. Psalm 119:62 - At midnight I rise to praise thee, because of thy righteous ordinances. Psalm 23 - The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want; he makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Matthew 11:28-30 - “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Go to ascensionpress.com/thjeffcavinsshow for resources, shown

What To Do About Bedwetting (and Other Personal Embarrassments)

Jeff shares the feelings of shame and isolation he faced as a kid struggling with bedwetting. Even if you never wet the bed, experiencing embarrassment and even self-loathing because of a perceived flaw is something we can all relate to. Jeff shares tips on how to react to someone experiencing these feelings, and points out that we’re not defined by those imperfections. We’re defined by our relationship with Jesus, and he will always look on us with love. Snippet from the Show “What we perceive as some kind of stigma or impediment does not define us. We’re defined by the blood of the lamb and the relationship we have with Jesus.” SHOWNOTES Tips for dealing with bedwetting: Be Patient - This is not something you can’t cope with. Realize that they may think their self-identity is in the balance, and that struggle is more important than your convenience. Love and affirm them as sons and daughters of God. Make sure they know they are not defined by this. Offer up your inconvenience to the Lord. 1 Peter 4:8 - Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. John 9:1 - As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Silo′am” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. Colossians 1:24 - “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church.” Resources in this Episode Sign up to be alerted when the new Bible study on Romans is available! If Deadly Sins Had Babies (Part 1)

We’re familiar with the seven deadly sins, but these vices have offshoots that can be harder to identify. For example, you may not think you have a problem with pride, but if you struggle with disobedience, boastfulness, or stubbornness, you’re grappling with a “child” of pride. Jeff goes through the offspring of pride, anger, and lust in today’s episode, and will cover the rest of the seven deadly sins next week! Do you have comments or questions for Jeff? What Do You Smell Like to God?

Did you know God likes certain aromas and smells? It’s not the literal smell that finds favor with God, but the meaning behind the smell. For example, the smell of incense represents prayer going up to heaven, which God loves. Isaiah 55:1 - “Ho, every one who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Hearken diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in fatness. Isaiah 55:2 - Why pay money for something that will not nourish you? Why spend your hard-earned money on something that will not satisfy? Listen carefully to me and eat what is nourishing! Enjoy fine food! Ephesians 5:29-30 - For no man ever hates his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. Ephesians 6:4 - “And the fathers! provoke not your children, but nourish them in the instruction and admonition of the Lord.” 1Peter 2:1 - So put away all malice and all guile and insincerity and envy and all slander. Like newborn babes, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation; for you have tasted the kindness of the Lord. 1Corinthians 3:1 - But I, brethren, could not address you as spiritual men, but as men of the flesh, as babes in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food; for you were not ready for it; and even yet you are not ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving like ordinary men?

How To Talk on Water

Have you ever tried walking on water? It is definitely not something we can do on our own. But this scripture passage is an invitation for each of us to get out of our comfort zones and come to him. One of the ways we can do this is by sharing the good news of the Gospel with people he puts in our paths. Jeff talks about what to say to others about God as well as tips for approaching people. When we share the message of the Gospel, the Holy Spirit confirms that message in those hearts. One person plants the seed, another waters it, and God allows the growth. How do you share your faith with other people? Snippet from the Show Sharing Christ with others begins with a personal relationship with the Lord. As St. Peter said, “Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you.” SHOWNOTES 1 Peter 3:15 - Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you. CCC Paragraph 1 - God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close to man. He calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength. He calls together all men, scattered and divided by sin, into the unity of his family, the Church. To accomplish this, when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son as Redeemer and Savior. In his Son and through him, he invites men to become, in the Holy Spirit, his adopted children and thus heirs of his blessed life. CCC Paragraphs 1430-1431 - Jesus' call to conversion and penance, like that of the prophets before him, does not aim first at outward works, "sackcloth and ashes," fasting and mortification, but at the conversion of the heart, interior conversion. Without this, such penances remain sterile and false; however, interior conversion urges expression in visible signs, gestures and works of penance. Interior repentance is a radical reorientation of our whole life, a return, a conversion to God with all our heart, an end of sin, a turning away from evil, with repugnance toward the evil actions we have committed. At the same time it entails the desire and resolution to change one's life, with hope in God's mercy and trust in the help of his grace. This conversion of heart is accompanied by a salutary pain and sadness which the Fathers called animi cruciatus (affliction of spirit) and compunctio cordis (repentance of heart). 7 Steps of the Kerygma God loves YOU and has a plan for your life Sin will destroy you and ruin God’s plan for your life Jesus Christ died to save you Repent and believe the Gospel, the “good news” Be baptized and receive the Holy Spirit Abide in Christ and His body the Church Go and make disciples yourself Jeff’s 5 Tips Get to know the 7 points of the kerygma. How I Learned to Read Minds

Do you want to learn how to read minds? All you have to do is think about what you wish people would do for you, and then do it for them. You’ll find it’s exactly how people want to be treated. It’s like reading their mind. Do you want understanding, forgiveness, compassion, respect, and friendliness from others? They want that from you as well. We can also look to Scripture to discover how people want to be treated, especially the fruits of the Holy Spirit. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23). See the shownotes for more details, resources, and Bible verses to ponder. I’ll be understanding and forgiving.”

I’m speaking with Fr. Josh Johnson, pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Fr. Josh has a new book out, Broken and Blessed, about how we are broken and our Church is broken, but that the mercy and blessings of God surpasses all our failings. The Power of Repentance

Repentance is critical for a healthy spiritual life. If we want to get over our mistakes and really orient ourselves around God, we have to have daily repentance. True repentance is not only a change in mind, “O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you” but also a change in action, “I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to sin no more …” Discover stories of repentance in the Bible, including the Prodigal Son, and learn what these Scripture verses mean for you. A Strategy for Lent

Stick to the three pillars of Lent for the full forty days with this strategy from Jeff Cavins. We hear about fasting, almsgiving, and prayer so often during Lent that the words can become bland and lose meaning. But these practices are not arbitrary measures designed to make us miserable for forty days. They are spiritual disciplines specifically aimed at three areas of weakness in our souls. They help us overcome sin and become more like Jesus. Jeff compares biblical figures from Genesis and 1 John to Jesus’ example in the Gospel of Matthew. He also provides some alternate ways of thinking about fasting, almsgiving, and prayer to help rejuvenate our commitment this Lent. Want to full shownotes? Is Your Parish Stuck in Traffic?

Parish life sometimes feels like being stuck in traffic. Things aren’t moving forward, resources are limited, tempers flare, and it feels like there’s nothing we can do to move things along. But Jeff heard an interesting take on this from Fr. Josh Johnson. He said, “You’re not stuck in traffic. You are traffic.” Without knowing it, we can contribute to parish gridlock. Jeff points out several areas where we aimlessly honk our horns instead of doing something to ease the tension. Gawking: We find ourselves looking at the problems of others, instead of being part of the solution. Taking a seperate car: We live in isolation instead of riding the same bus and cultivating a supportive community. Always taking the same route: We take the same roads again and again, just because they’re familiar, when sometimes we need to find a new way to get things done. Jeff also digs into Scripture to help us avoid these tendencies and take up the call to get involved at a parish and get traffic moving again. Jeff and Dr. Sri also answer tough questions such as: If God is going to wipe away our sin, couldn't there have been another way besides crucifixion? Was Jesus abandoned by the Father when he called out “My God, my God. Why have you forsaken me?” Did Jesus have second thoughts about dying for our sins when he asked God to “let this cup pass from me?” Snippet from the Show: “You will never see God’s love more beautifully shine than in these accounts of Christ’s passion.” For the full shownotes, go to ascensionpress.com/thejeffcavinsshow or email us at [email protected] to get them delivered stright to your inbox.

Feel Like An Outcast? Touch Jesus’ Garment

Have you ever felt like an outcast? This is a show of hope and possibility. In the old testament, because the righteousness of Israel could not overcome the sin and unrighteousness of Egypt, Israelites were given a law that separated them from that unrighteousness. In the new testament, however, Jesus reaches out and touches those very people. Why? Because his righteousness is powerful enough to overcome the darkness and unrighteousness in this world. He cleanses us so that we can come and touch the Son of God. It is the people who feel like outcasts that Jesus longs to touch. He longs to give their lives significance and meaning. Jeff explains the context behind the bible passage about the woman who touched Jesus’ garment (Mark 5:25-34) and shows you ways to reach out and touch him today. Your home is supposed to be a place of reflection, intimacy, and growth. But in these moments, it is all too easy to become paralyzed and cease to walk in your vocation. We all have been given 24 hours in a day and as a disciple, you are a steward of that time. Today, Jeff reflects on two Bible passages: Jesus healing a paralyzed man (Luke 5:24) and the faith of the Centurion (Matthew 8:5-13). Through these two passages, Jeff provides 3 things you can do to break free, rise up, and walk. *Snippet from the Show: * We all experience these kinds of paralysis in our life, but it points to something deeper and that is that we cannot get to heaven on our own. We need Jesus, we are paralyzed in terms of our eternal destiny and we desperately need him to help us. SHOWNOTES Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the one who was paralyzed—“I say to you, stand up and take your bed and go to your home.”(Luke 5:24) The Faith of the Centurion When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress.” And he said to him, “I will come and cure him.” The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.” When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, “Truly I tell you, in no one[d] in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you according to your faith.” And the servant was healed in that hour. Why Remain Catholic?

Why should we remain Catholic when the Church is infected with corrupt people? Jeff understands that the Church is in trouble and being Catholic is not easy at this time, but the Church still has something to offer. The answer is simple: this is the Church that Jesus founded. Though corruption has affected the Church in the past, there has also been a lot of good that has come from it. Fiddler on the Roof and Marriage

Is love an emotion? Jeff answers this question by looking at the marriage of Tevye and Golde, the couple from Fiddler on the Roof who had an arranged marriage that lasted over twenty-five years. At one point in the show, Tevye asks Golde if she loves him, and she is hesitant to respond. Together, they discover that in their daily commitment to one another, they had in fact acted out of love. This doesn’t sound like our modern idea of a happy marriage (first comes love, then comes marriage), but Jeff shows how their love grew after marriage, and how we can use their example of commitment in our own lives. By choosing to love, we can strengthen relationships not just with our spouse, but with friends and family as well. Jeff also answers a reader’s question about what to do with old Bibles. "Marriage is not based on emotion but based on a commitment. And that commitment is a reflection of God’s love for the Church and a demonstration to the world of a commitment that goes beyond anything that the world is used to."
