Ep 1519Book | Containing Big Tech: How to Protect Our Civil Rights, Economy, and Democracy | A Conversation with Author Tom Kemp | Redefining Society Podcast with Marco Ciappelli

Guest: Tom Kemp, AuthorOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/tomkemp/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/TomKemp00_____________________________Host: Marco Ciappelli, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining Society PodcastOn ITSPmagazine | https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-podcast-radio-hosts/marco-ciappelli_____________________________This Episode’s SponsorsBlackCloak 👉 https://itspm.ag/itspbcwebBugcrowd 👉 https://itspm.ag/itspbgcwebDevo 👉 https://itspm.ag/itspdvweb_____________________________Episode IntroductionWelcome to another episode of the Redefining Society Podcast, where your host Marco Ciappelli plunges into the depths of the complex, dynamic relationship between technology, privacy, and cybersecurity. This episode takes you on a thrilling journey, narrating the story of Tom Kemp, an active participant in the tech industry, with investments across privacy, cybersecurity, and consumer and enterprise-oriented companies.Kemp's involvement isn't limited to just business; he's been heavily engaged in the realm of public policy, using his expertise to shape laws like California's Proposition 24, the California Privacy Rights Act, and the California Delete Act. He's even penned a book, Containing Big Tech, which examines the implications of the unchecked growth of tech giants on our privacy and security. This compelling conversation traverses through multiple layers of the privacy and cybersecurity sphere. Marco and Kemp address the game of "whack a mole" played by lawmakers trying to regulate a rapidly evolving industry. They discuss the path-breaking GDPR law in Europe and question if the United States is lagging or catching up with international norms.Kemp also delves into a sobering exploration of how our personal data is weaponized against us, leading to identity theft, cyber attacks, and even manipulation of our behaviors. And perhaps most disturbingly, how the accumulation of our data can potentially violate our Fourth Amendment rights and could be used to discriminate against us.Marco and Kemp challenge you, the listener, to think deeply about how data is collected and used. They reveal the intricate webs woven by data brokers and tech companies that use "dark patterns" to lure consumers into sharing their information. The conversation scrutinizes the deceptive nature of agreements and asks the daunting question: can we really take back our privacy? These thought-provoking insights are a wake-up call for consumers and businesses alike, inviting us to reflect on the inevitable risks that come alongside the undeniable benefits of technology in our society, our daily lives, and businesses. The Redefining Society Podcast dares to explore the boundaries of privacy and cybersecurity, challenging the status quo, and forging a path to a more secure future. So tune in, soak in the insights, and join the conversation. Share this episode with your network and don't forget to subscribe to the Redefining Society Podcast. Let's redefine society together, ensuring privacy and cybersecurity for all.About the BookTechnology is a gift and a curse. The five Big Tech companies―Meta, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google―have built innovative products that improve many aspects of our lives. But their intrusiveness and our dependence on them have created pressing threats to our civil rights, economy, and democracy.Coming from an extensive background building Silicon Valley-based tech startups, Tom Kemp eloquently and precisely weaves together the threats posed by Big Tech:- the overcollection and weaponization of our most sensitive data- the problematic ways Big Tech uses AI to process and act upon our data- the stifling of competition and entrepreneurship due to Big Tech's dominant market positionThis richly detailed book exposes the consequences of Big Tech's digital surveillance, exploitative use of AI, and monopolistic and anticompetitive practices. It offers actionable solutions to these problems and a clear path forward for individuals and policymakers to advocate for change. By containing the excesses of Big Tech, we will ensure our civil rights are respected and preserved, our economy is competitive, and our democracy is protected._____________________________ResourcesContaining Big Tech: How to Protect Our Civil Rights, Economy, and Democracy (Book): https://www.tomkemp.ai/containing-big-tech____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWatch the webcast version on-demand on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllTUoWMGGQHlGVZA575VtGr9Are you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/advertise-on-itspmagazine-podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 1515Building a Better Defense with Attack Surface Management | A Brand Story from Infosecurity Europe 2023, London, England | A NetSPI Company Briefing Story with Nabil Hannan

Live on-location from Infosecurity Europe 2023, Sean Martin connects with Nabil Hannan, the field CISO at NetSPI, to discuss Attack Surface Management (ASM) and how it has evolved in recent years to become the minimum cybersecurity benchmark that organizations need. ASM provides a more targeted approach to vulnerability management, allowing testers to focus on building a platform with automation that identifies areas that need attention and validates them.Sean and Nabil also cover API security, the challenges of authentication and authorization, and the need for organizations to prioritize building secure-by-design frameworks. Nabil stresses the importance of understanding an organization's external perimeter and what exposures might exist, as well as the need for good cybersecurity hygiene that starts with good cybersecurity basics before bringing others in to help with the problem.ASM is an important element in modern cybersecurity with its role as the first line of defense reinforces the critical need to have a continuous view of an organization's external-facing perimeter.Note: This story contains promotional content. Ep 1501Safeguarding Against Malicious Use of Large Language Models: A Review of the OWASP Top 10 for LLMs | A Conversation with Jason Haddix | Redefining CyberSecurity with Sean Martin

Guest: Jason Haddix, CISO and Hacker in Charge at BuddoBot Inc [@BuddoBot]On LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/jhaddix/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/Jhaddix____________________________Host: Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast [@RedefiningCyber]On ITSPmagazine | https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-podcast-radio-hosts/sean-martin____________________________This Episode’s SponsorsImperva | https://itspm.ag/imperva277117988Pentera | https://itspm.ag/penteri67a___________________________Episode NotesIn this Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast, we provide an in-depth exploration of the potential implications of large language models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence in the cybersecurity landscape. Jason Haddix, a renowned expert in offensive security, shares his perspective on the evolving risks and opportunities that these new technologies bring to businesses and individuals alike. Sean and Jason explore the potential risks of using LLMs:🚀 Prompt Injections💧 Data Leakage🏖️ Inadequate Sandboxing📜 Unauthorized Code Execution🌐 SSRF Vulnerabilities⚖️ Overreliance on LLM-generated Content🧭 Inadequate AI Alignment🚫 Insufficient Access Controls⚠️ Improper Error Handling💀 Training Data PoisoningFrom the standpoint of offensive security, Haddix emphasizes the potential for LLMs to create an entirely new world of capabilities, even for non-expert users. He envisages a near future where AI, trained on diverse datasets like OCR and image recognition data, can answer private queries about individuals based on their public social media activity. This potential, however, isn't limited to individuals - businesses are equally at risk.According to Haddix, businesses worldwide are rushing to leverage proprietary data they've collected in order to generate profits. They envision using LLMs, such as GPT, to ask intelligent questions of their data that could inform decisions and fuel growth. This has given rise to the development of numerous APIs, many of which are integrated with LLMs to produce their output. However, Haddix warns of the vulnerabilities this widespread use of LLMs might present. With each integration and layer of connectivity, opportunities for prompt injection attacks increase, with attackers aiming to exploit these interfaces to steal data. He also points out that the very data a company uses to train its LLM might be subject to theft, with hackers potentially able to smuggle out sensitive data through natural language interactions.Another concern Haddix raises is the interconnected nature of these systems, as companies link their LLMs to applications like Slack and Salesforce. The connections intended for data ingestion or query could also be exploited for nefarious ends. Data leakage, a potential issue when implementing LLMs, opens multiple avenues for attacks.Sean Martin, the podcast's host, echoes Haddix's concerns, imagining scenarios where private data could be leveraged and manipulated. He notes that even benign-seeming interactions, such as conversing with a bot on a site like Etsy about jacket preferences, could potentially expose a wealth of private data.Haddix also warns of the potential to game these systems, using the Etsy example to illustrate potential data extraction, including earnings of sellers or even their private location information. He likens the data leakage possibilities in the world of LLMs to the potential dangers of SQL injection in the web world. In conclusion, Haddix emphasizes the need to understand and safeguard against these risks, lest organizations inadvertently expose themselves to attack via their own LLMs.All OWASP Top 10 items are reviewed, along with a few other valuable resources (listed below). We hope you enjoy this conversation!____________________________Watch this and other videos on ITSPmagazine's YouTube ChannelRedefining CyberSecurity Podcast with Sean Martin, CISSP playlist:📺 https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllS9aVGdiakVss9u7xgYDKYqITSPmagazine YouTube Channel:📺 https://www.youtube.com/@itspmagazineBe sure to share and subscribe!____________________________ResourcesThe inspiring Tweet: https://twitter.com/Jhaddix/status/1661477215194816513Announcing the OWASP Top 10 for Large Language Models (AI) Project (Steve Wilson): https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/announcing-owasp-top-10-large-language-models-ai-project-steve-wilson/OWASP Top 10 List for Large Language Models Descriptions: https://owasp.org/www-project-top-10-for-large-language-model-applications/descriptions/Daniel Miessler Blog: The AI attack Surface Map 1.0: https://danielmiessler.com/p/the-ai-attack-surface-map-v1-0/PODCAST: Navigating the AI Security Frontier: Balancing Innovation and Cybersecurity | ITSPmagazine Event Coverage: RSAC 2023 San Francisco, USA | A Conversation about AI security and MITRE Atlas with Dr. Christina Liaghati: https://itsprad.io/redefining-cybersecurity-163Learn more about MITRE Atl

With hosts Dr. Susan Birne-Stone and Marco Ciappelli, listeners embark on a journey of knowledge and discovery. The guest of the day is someone whose work is truly captivating. As a sociolinguist, Valerie Fridland's passion for language and the nuances of human communication has charted a course of learning for students globally. As a professor, an author, and above all, a mentor, Valerie's contributions to the field are substantial.Valerie’s fascination with language extends beyond the usual academic perspective. She enables listeners to explore the social factors that shape language over time, bringing fresh insights to daily conversations. For the younger audience, she validates their contributions to language evolution, debunking myths around 'slang' or 'bad grammar'.In the conversation with Valerie, listeners will explore how language connects to individual identities and cultures, how it is tightly bound with historical contexts, and how it continues to evolve with societal changes. Valerie will also share her journey with the Mentor Project, demonstrating how her expertise is being used to inspire and guide the next generation. This episode promises to be a linguistic roller-coaster, offering both enlightenment and entertainment. Subscribing and sharing the podcast can spread the love for learning. To learn more about the Mentor Project's initiative, mentors, and ways to become a part of this vibrant community, listeners can visit The Mentor Project’s website. The journey to becoming a lifelong learner begins with the Mentor Project.Without further ado, let's dive in!About the Book Like, Literally, Dude: Arguing for the Good in Bad EnglishA lively linguistic exploration of the speech habits we love to hate—and why our “like”s and “literally”s actually make us better communicatorsParanoid about the “ums” and “uhs” that pepper your presentations? Concerned that people notice your vocal fry? Bewildered by “hella” or the meteoric rise of “so”? What if these features of our speech weren’t a sign of cultural and linguistic degeneration, but rather, some of the most dynamic and revolutionary tools at our disposal? In Like, Literally, Dude, linguist Valerie Fridland shows how we can re-imagine these forms as exciting new linguistic frontiers rather than our culture’s impending demise. With delightful irreverence and expertise built over two decades of research, Fridland weaves together history, psychology, science, and laugh-out-loud anecdotes to explain why we speak the way we do today, and how that impacts what our kids may be saying tomorrow. She teaches us that language is both function and fashion, and that though we often blame the young, the female, and the uneducated for its downfall, we should actually thank them for their linguistic ingenuity.By exploring the dark corners every English teacher has taught us to avoid, Like, Literally, Dude redeems our most pilloried linguistic quirks, arguing that they are fundamental to our social, professional, and romantic success—perhaps even more so than our clothing or our resumes. It explains how filled pauses benefit both speakers and listeners; how the use of “dude” can help people bond across social divides; why we’re always trying to make our intensifiers ever more intense; as well as many other language tics, habits, and developments.Language change is natural, built into the language system itself, and we wouldn’t be who we are without it. Like, Literally, Dude celebrates the dynamic, ongoing, and empowering evolution of language, and it will speak to anyone who talks, or listens, inspiring them to communicate dynamically and effectively in their daily lives._____________________________ResourcesLearn More About The Mentor Project: https://mentorproject.orgLike, Literally, Dude: Arguing for the Good in Bad English (Book): https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/671558/l

The role of whistleblowers in society, especially within cybersecurity, is a subject that provokes a gamut of reactions. And yet, as Marco and Igor discuss, these individuals could be considered the ultimate "canaries in the coal mine," heralding issues and risks that might otherwise go unnoticed. Ep 1471Book | Inside the Liberal Arts: Critical Thinking and Citizenship | A Conversation with Author Jeffrey Scheuer | Redefining Society Podcast with Marco Ciappelli

Guest: Jeffrey Scheuer, Writer/Independent ScholarOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffrey-scheuer-82443697/_____________________________Host: Marco Ciappelli, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining Society PodcastOn ITSPmagazine | https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-podcast-radio-hosts/marco-ciappelli_____________________________This Episode’s SponsorsBlackCloak 👉 https://itspm.ag/itspbcwebBugcrowd 👉 https://itspm.ag/itspbgcwebDevo 👉 https://itspm.ag/itspdvweb_____________________________Episode IntroductionWelcome to this thought-provoking episode of the Redefining Society Podcast with your host, Marco Ciappelli. Prepare to dive deep into a compelling conversation that investigates the very bedrock of society — education. Is there something fundamentally amiss with how we're imparting knowledge to the next generation? Are we teaching them how to learn and critically think about what they're learning? Listen in as we explore these burning questions and more.In this episode, Marco engages in a riveting conversation with Jeffrey Scheuer, the author of "Inside the Liberal Arts: Critical Thinking and Citizenship." A book that ambitiously endeavors to merge the realms of liberal arts, critical thinking, and citizenship into a comprehensive whole in just under 200 pages. Jeffrey takes on the challenge of explicating the elusive nature of liberal arts, critical thinking, and their inherent connections, a task rarely undertaken in earnest. As you listen, contemplate Marco's ethos: he's not here to provide definitive answers but to encourage his audience to ponder different perspectives and cultivate their own thoughts. In a world where the term 'liberal' has become so politically charged, Jeffrey offers clarity by tracing its roots back to ancient Rome. 'Liberal arts,' he posits, originally meant 'the skills of a free citizen of the Roman Republic,' and miraculously, still carries that connotation. It's about citizenship, about the transactions between the individual and the community, and this conversation delves into what it truly means to be a good citizen.Today, in the age of information overload and evolving technological landscapes, are the education and media industries keeping pace? Are they fostering informed, enlightened citizens or merely consumers of information? What's the role of critical thinking in navigating the ceaseless waves of data and stimuli we encounter daily?Join us as we discuss these fascinating topics and more. Let's redefine society together. If this conversation makes you think, Marco has done his job. Share your thoughts, spread the conversation, and make sure to subscribe to the Redefining Society Podcast for more insightful discussions. Remember, we're here not just to consume information, but to critically think, engage, and shape the world around us. Let's start the journey.About the BookInside the Liberal Arts: Critical Thinking and Citizenship answers three highly topical and related questions:- What are the liberal arts?- What is critical thinking?- How are they connected? At a time when liberal education is on the defensive vis à vis the STEM disciplines, and its future is called into question, the terms ‘liberal arts’ and ‘critical thinking’ are often used in tandem but seldom explained. Inside the Liberal Arts provides an overview of the core ideas that enable students to become higher-level thinkers. Avoiding the excesses of much academic prose (narrowness of focus, turgidity, obscure and unnecessary terminology, the pretention of absolute authority, and over-sourcing), Inside the Liberal Arts answers the three questions above, for students, educators, and the wider community of aspiring critical thinkers. It is at once a deep exploration of the concept of the liberal arts, and an accessible, thought-provoking guide to critical inquiry for students, prospective students, graduate students, former students, adult learners, parents, and anyone interested in liberal learning.Defenders of the liberal arts perennially mention the importance of liberal learning to critical thinking and to citizenship. But there is no work that systematically explores the meaning of those ideas and how the liberal arts, critical thinking, and citizenship interconnect. As Mark Twain purportedly said of the weather: everyone complains about it, but nobody does anything about it.Inside the Liberal Arts: Critical Thinking and Citizenship does something about it.Examining the meaning of the term “liberal arts” and its roots in Greek and Roman thought, it goes on to explain how critical thinking unifies the modern liberal arts curriculum. As such, it is both an exploration of the nature of liberal learning and, integral to that, an accessible introduction to higher-level critical thinking for students, educators, and general readers. While Inside the Liberal Arts presents multiple themes and concepts, an overarching idea is that citizenship is essentially trian
