Ep 79Episode 79 - Running Events (Part 2)

E

Episode 79 will complete our two episode series on the running of events. The intention of this series is not to tell you a bullet pointed list of what to bring and exactly how to do it, but to inform on thoughts and ideas around running and growing events. While this is 40k focused for our purposes, the information contained in these episodes is not limited strictly to any one gaming system. This episode focuses on Regional and National (bordering International) level events. We have quite a few guest interviews this time around, and the audio quality can vary from interview to interview. We have done our best in places to clean it up where it seems messy to us. We take our sound quality very seriously and this is why we tend to avoid doing lots of Skype Interviews. However, the value of the content presented here in Episode 79 was such that we felt it was worth some of the background hiss. We hope you agree. Not only do we have a fantastic episode lined up for you, but at the end of it, we have our Forbidden Lore segment on Guy Haleys Black Library novel – Baneblade! We get Guy to join us for this hour long discussion, and lend us his insights! Forbidden Lore is full of Spoilers though, so if you haven't read Baneblade, and you don't want it spoiled, you will want to skip this segment. We have placed it at the end of the episode, after the closing music to make it easy for you to stop listening if necessary! Thanks Guy for joining us and writing a highly entertaining book. Ep 78Episode 78 - Running Events (Part 1)

E

Episode 78 begins a two episode series in which we discuss what goes into, and how to run events. While this will include tournaments, this is not limited to just that style of play. Over the course of these two episodes (78 and 79) we will discuss the thinking behind running events, how to avoid problems that may pop up and how to make your event more successful. We will start off by talking about smaller events, on a personal and local level, and then move into regional and finally national level events. We will have guests that include some of the best in the field and hear their thoughts as to what goes into the event and how you come out the other side unscathed! As usual we lead off with some hobby progress and games played, and devolve into a little bit of arguing about the new Eldar and pricing. We hope you find this topic insightful, informative and inspirational! Ep 77Episode 77 – Imperial Armour 12: The Fall of Orpheus

E

Episode 77 sweeps through the sector as we cover Imperial Armour 12: The Fall of Orpheus. This is the latest book from Forge World that details a massive Necron invasion (cleansing?) of The Orpheus sector and pits the soulless androids against The Death Korps of Krieg and The Minotaurs Chapter of The Adeptus Astartes! Of course, we have been gone for some time from our normal programming, so we have a massive section of hobby progress to cover (well at least one of us does!) as well as games we have played in the intervening time. This includes Carls visit to San Diego to attend The Broadside Bash. And finally we speak with James Hakola, but you may know him better as Mr. Dandy. He has an incredible new line of resin terrain that we think you are going to be interested in! We hope you are glad we are back, because we are back with a large episode for you to gorge yourselves on! Ep 76Episode 76 - How to cheat on your spouse with 40k

E

Episode 76 of The Independent Characters addresses the topic of Cheating on your spouse with 40k! We all know someone who has a significant other who is Gamer Intolerant. We go over some tips and tricks to keep your love affair with Warhammer 40k going while keeping those closest to you in the dark! We also spend quite a bit of time discussing hobby progress, games played, Zone Mortalis and the new Tau. To top it all off, we have our fifth outing of The Warrior Lodge, where we discuss everything from the state of the Warhammer 40k game, the new Tau (again!) to favorite moments in tournaments. It should be noted that we stated our next show would not be until May 5th due to Carl touring England (and more importantly Warhammer World), but we should have said May 12th. However, you can still hear Carl soon as he will be guesting on The Overlords 40k Podcast while he is in London! Be sure to follow our Facebook page and front page of The Independent Characters as it will be receiving frequent updates on Carls journey to the Mecca of 40k! We will miss you probably more than you will miss us though. So we will see you in about a month. Ep 75Episode 75 - Identifying Your 40k Playstyle

E

Episode 75 of The Independent Characters addresses the problem of Identifying your Warhammer 40k Playstyle. To help us out with this, we have our good friend Josh joining us for a good portion of the show. So often players aren't having as much fun as they could have with 40k because they are playing armies or builds within armies that go against the nature of the way they enjoy playing. We set out to identify a few of these different type of playstyles and hopefully point players in the right direction. As the curse of Episode 74 appears to have been lifted, we also have a tremendously long Hobby Progress and Games Played section. There is a lot of good content here though, so we think you will enjoy! Last but not least we discuss the Bay Area Open and some of the struggles this premier 40k GT had in their 2013 outing. Ep 74Episode 74 – The Cursed Episode

E

As mentioned on our Facebook page, our front page and our forums, this episode seems to have been cursed with a run of bad luck. So instead of our planned topic of Identifying your 40k Playstyle, we are just releasing the Warrior Lodge segment of this episode to tide you over until we record Identifying your 40k Playstyle in Episode 75. Sometimes things just take a turn for the worst and you have to roll with the punches! But we will be back, and better than ever in episode 75. We hope you enjoy! Ep 73Episode 73 - Dark Heresy

E

Episode 73 of The Independent Characters sees us exploring the dark corners of an even darker universe as we delve into Dark Heresy the Role Playing Game! Much of our background comes from roleplaying games and we have waited quite awhile to cover this game. We were fortunate to get one of the former authors of the game, and former host of the Dice Like Thunder Podcast, Mack Martin, to run us and a few friends through an adventure to add to our experience with the game, prior to recording. Dark Heresy is a roleplaying game based upon the universe of Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000. In Dark Heresy players take on the roles of Acolytes of the Inquisition, aiming to uncover and combat the enemies of mankind, be they aliens, heretics or mutants! On top of our usual Workbench and Games Played segments, we discuss the setting and background of Dark Heresy, give an overview of the rules, and talk at length about the product line and support that Fantasy Flight offers. If you have enjoyed the writings of Dan Abnetts Inquisitor series of novels, then this might just be the roleplaying game for you. And as if that wasn't enough! We finally have our Forbidden Lore segment on John French's, Ahriman: Exile! Major spoilers in this bit, so if you haven't read it yet - you may want to end the show before we get to this point. Ep 72Episode 72 - White Dwarf: Then and Now

E

Episode 72 of The Independent Characters takes a long and hard look at White Dwarf of the past, present and future. Over the years White Dwarf has provided endless pictures and articles about the Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k Hobby (as well as other Specialist Games by GW). However, in recent years the magazine has come under a high amount of criticism that it is nothing more than a "Catalog for GW". Additional criticism generaly points to how the magazine in the past was so much better than it is today. White Dwarf has recently gone through an update of their magazine, and we have recently come into possession of a HUGE amount of back issues thanks to our buddy Ken. So we thought this would be the perfect time to put the magazine to the test. Was it truly better in the past, or do we look back at the official magazine of Games Workshop through rose-tinted glasses? We answer that question as well as provide hobby progress updates and games played over the last two weeks. NOTE: Our Forbidden Lore Segment on Ahriman: Exile has been delayed one episode as this one ran incredibly long. Sorry about the last minute notification. Ep 71Episode 71 - Expanding Your Gaming Group

E

Episode 71 of The Independent Characters starts off with a lengthy Hobby Progress and Games Played segment. We then focus on our topic of the show, which is how to meet new players and introduce them to your gaming group. Also, we talk about how to be a new player to an established gaming group. We will discuss the do's and don'ts of meeting new players (safely) and evaluating whether these people play the style of game that you like to play. A Warrior Lodge segment hosted by Geoff this time around, includes a panel of all new guests we will see what some of our local gamers think about the topics we have cooked up for them this time around. Additionally, we have a short interview with Jay of Spruehammer. Jay and Simon are following the gamers dream, and opening a game store! In the process of doing so, they went down to Games Workshop Corporate HQ in the US and took a tour of The World of Battle and the GW factory and facilities there. We talk to them about what their impressions were. We hope you enjoy! Ep 70Episode 70 - The 2012 Year In Review

E

It is once again time for our Independent Characters Annual Year in Review. This time we are obviously talking about 2012 and how it stacked up for Warhammer 40k and Games Workshop. This was, of course, the 25th Anniversary Year of Warhammer 40k and we will take a look back at every release from Games Workshop, Black Library, Forge World, Fantasy Flight and any other licensee of Warhammer 40k over the past 12 months. Does it amount to a 25th Anniversary? We will let you decide, but of course you came here to listen to our opinion about it! As usual we have some hobby progress to report, however with Carl being sick over the holidays he ended up cancelling out some of the games he had planned to play in. We aren't short of topics in this episode though and we think you guys will enjoy yelling at us through your stereo/iPod/Computer/MP3 listening device of choice, as we walk our way through our first episode of 2013. Thanks for spending another year with us. We wouldn't be here without you! We hope you enjoy! Ep 69Episode 69 - Imperial Armour Vol. 1 and Crusade of Fire

E

Episode 69 is a veritable buffet of content. After our standard Hobby Progress and Games Played segments, we talk briefly about some of our New Years Resolutions as they pertain to Warhammer 40k. We also go into some detail around the 2013 Independent Characters Hobby Progress Challenge. We had a lot of people asking us to do it again, so we have! Our second segment of the show is an overview and in depth look at the Campaign Expansion, Crusade of Fire. Geoff and Carl have a lengthy discussion around this expansion, where it succeeds and where it falls short. Immediately after that we have a close look at the latest offering from Forge World. Imperial Armour Vol 1: Second Edition – Imperial Guard. This is a pricey but huge book bringing not only the original Imperial Armour Vol 1 into 6th Edition, but also consolidating every Imperial Guard vehicle from all current Forge World books into one comprehensive volume. And finally, The Warrior Lodge is back for a second round of topics for discussion. We have brought Adan, Steve and Justin in this time and we will let them have the mic while they discuss a variety of topics, the least of which is not limited to Dolph Lundgren. (You will see…) This is our final epsiode of 2012 and we would like to thank not only the listeners, but all of the guests that have joined us over the last year. We have had a blast bringing the show to you and we will continue to do so in 2013! We hope you enjoy! Ep 68Episode 68 – Terrain: The Third Army

E

In Episode 68 we discuss terrain as the "Third Army" on the gaming table. We touch on some rules around terrain before we talk about the availability of terrain kits from various companies. In the second portion of the show we discuss the building of custom terrain as well as a few solutions for the safe storage of your hard work. We have a rather lengthy hobby progress and games played section in which we also introduce our shows guest for the episode, Jeremy, the winner of this years GW Terrain Contest. Last but not least – we have an interview with Graham McNeil for our latest Forbidden Lore! We discuss The Imperial Infantrymens Handbook as well as his latest release, Angel Exterminatus. We also throw in a little Priests of Mars! There are spoilers in this section of several books. So be warned. This portion of the show is after the closing credits. Note: Unfortunately the room we were recording in had the air conditioning running and we didn't realize it was being picked up in the background quite so much. Hopefully you don't find it too intrusive (we are sticklers for sound quality – it isn't THAT bad but it bugs us nonetheless!). We hope you enjoy episode 68. Episode 67 - Producing great Battle Reports

E

Episode 67 focuses on how to create and develop great Battle Reports! Whether it is through video, writing, photography or (God Emperor help you…) audio, we are going to go through the pros and cons of each format and how to get the best results for your time and effort. We will discuss how to record games of 40k (either through video, photo, notes, etc) and then how to edit what you have and make it into something you want to share. We also have quite a bit of hobby progress and games played to discuss. In addition we will have a new segment to unveil this episode called The Warrior Lodge. In this segment we get several members of our gaming group together to discuss, in a moderated fashion, a number of hot topics both in our group and across the Internet. Please let us know what you think of this segment. It is part of our overall mission to make you feel like a part of our gaming group. If we get positive responses to this we will make a point of doing it more often! Last bit of information is this: If you are in the Bay Area of California, we are having a Deep Strike Event on December 14th in the evening. We would love for you to attend. There is more information on this event on our main web site, forums and facebook page! Don't miss it! Ep 66Episode 66 – Customizing the background of your army

E

Episode 66 focuses on how to develop your own background and history for your Warhammer 40k Army. We throw out some ideas for character development and give you our thoughts on the "Do's and Dont's" of lore creation in the Warhammer 40k Universe. The topic of this episode, which is very subjective at best, will surely evoke some strong reactions as to what people think is and is not "cool" for background material. We certainly don't think everyone will agree with us. One of the great things about the Warhammer 40k Universe however, is that it is so large that really anything can fit in it! Additionally, we announce the winner (and runner-up) of the Custom Army Background Contest, and discuss theirs, and other entries! A longer than usual hobby progress and games played segment is included at the start of the show. Episode 65 - Necromunda: Tales from the Underhive

E

We change gears a bit for Episode 65 and take this time to talk about a legendary game from Games Workshops Specialist range; Necromunda. This is a game of gang warfare in the bowels of the Hive Cities of the Warhammer 40k Universe. We take our turn playing through the game, spend some time talking about the background and story surrounding it, as well as explain some (all too familiar!) rules. To help us explain the game, we have brough back our long term friend and gamer Thom. He has a ton of experience with Necromunda. This is one of those games that you may have heard people talk about in the past and wondered about, or you are a person still playing it. Even though it isn't one of the "Big Three" games that GW puts out, it does have some relevance to Warhammer 40k and you may just find, after the show, that you want to try your hand at this gem of a game. Of course we discuss our games played and workbench progress. Last but not least – please vote for us as Podcast of The Year in the Gaming Category at www.podcastawards.com! We have been nominated and would really like to take it the last few yards to the goal line, but we need your help to do so! You can vote once per day from November 1st to November 15th. Ep 64Episode 64 – The Horus Heresy Book One: Betrayal (Part 2)

E

The Horus Heresy Book 1: Betrayal by Forge World and author Alan Bligh (and Team), is the continued topic of conversation for Episode 64. This is the second part of our two part series in which we cover the latest (and greatest!) Forge World release. In this episode we go into some of the units and how the Space Marine Crusade Army List works for the Horus Heresy series. We also discuss, in depth, each of the Legions that are represented in this book and how the background fits with the rules for each of them. During the workbench and games played section, there is some overview talk about the new Chaos Space Marine Codex as well as some of the models that have been released and our experiences with them so far. We hope you enjoy! Editors Note: At one point in the show we discuss the rules around 2000 point plus Space Marine Crusade lists and whether the Force Org slots double for this or not. Carl mentions that he will find out the answer and post it in the show notes. We have checked with the source and the correct answer is that they do NOT double for this. 0:00:00 – Show Intro 0:05:25 – Workbench and Games Played 0:45:15 – Horus Heresy Book 1 – Betrayal: Units and Army List mechanics 1:28:15 – Horus Heresy Book 1 – Betrayal: Legions and Primarch mechanics 2:45:00 – Show Closing Links: KR Multicase – SPONSOR Secret Weapon Miniatures! – SPONSOR Smells Like Wargaming – SPONSOR The Brush and Bolter – SPONSOR Forge World Games Workshop The Black Library Endgame Oakland

Ep 63Episode 63 – The Horus Heresy Book One: Betrayal (Part 1)

E

The Horus Heresy Book 1: Betrayal by Forge World and author Alan Bligh, is the topic of conversation for Episode 63. This is a project that 40k fans have been waiting more than 25 years for and it is finally here! This is part one of a two part series in which we cover the latest (and greatest!) Forge World release. In this episode we cover the backstory that makes up The Horus Heresy (and in particular the scouring of Istivan III) as well as the Campaign System and missions that are introduced in this book. Is the book worth it's high price? We will begin to discuss that in this episode, but reveal our ultimate thoughts in our Bang for Your Buck in Episode 64. You won't want to miss this coverage though as it has something for everyone. We obviously cover our Hobby Progress and Games Played as well – including our thoughts about the West Coast Podcast Alliance Golden Ticket Event which we attended last weekend! Ep 62Episode 62 - The Celesticon Experience

E

Episode 62 sees Geoffs excuses for not completing any Hobby Progress dry up as Celesticon, the Northern California Gaming Convention has now finished. We spend a tremendous time this episode talking about our Hobby Progress and Games Played since we skipped it last episode. We also talk about the Gamer Experience at Celesticon this year and then move into the experience of working a gaming convention such as this one from the organizers perspective. Since Geoff has spent the last few months as the Miniatures Coordinator for Celesticon, he is uniquely positioned to tell us all about it. Finally, after the closing music, we have our Forbidden Lore Segment on Gav Thorpes "Path of The Outcast". This is the third in the Path Trilogy in which Gav has written an amazing story about the Eldar. And to make it all worthwhile, we have Gav Thorpe himself, join us for this Forbidden Lore! SPOILER ALERT – As with all Forbidden Lore coverage, we discuss the entirety of the book we are addressing, so if you haven't read this book yet, (or the rest of the Path Series for that matter) then DO NOT Listen after the closing music! 0:00:00 – Show Intro 0:04:20 – Workbench and Games Played 0:57:00 – Celesticon Gaming Experience 1:27:35 – Celesticon Behind The Scenes 1:49:10 – Show Closing 1:50:45 – Forbidden Lore: Path of the Outcast Links: KR Multicase – SPONSOR Secret Weapon Miniatures! – SPONSOR Smells Like Wargaming – SPONSOR The Brush and Bolter – SPONSOR Celesticon Game Convention G3 Santa Cruz Forge World Games Workshop The Black Library Endgame Oakland

Episode 61 has forced us to make a new rule here in the studio. No one holds the mic while recording! We know the occassional tapping is annoying – our apologies. Now on to the show! We have very special guests Scott, Josh and Jordan from the G3 Santa Cruz Gaming Group, here to discuss The Mestre Incursion Campaign event that we attended last month. This was seriously one of the coolest narrative events we have ever attended and we think you will agree. We have an in depth discussion around the organization of the event and the writing of the campaign. Before we go any further though, we have to mention that the heat in The Boiler Room reached an all time high, and during this recording we ended up opening the windows and doors. So yes, that isn't the crickets of the audience (we hope!) but the sounds of actual nature outside the studio. Hopefully it isn't too distracting! We spend some time discussing our hobby progress and get a little off topic there, but also give two in depth reviews of Gav Thorpes "Path of the Outcast" and Graham McNeills "Priests of Mars". No spoilers in these reviews. But in case you missed it, we are going to be covering Path of The Outcast as our Forbidden Lore book, two episodes from now! And last but certainly not least, we would like to introduce you to The Brush and Bolter, our newest sponsor. Known for painting high quality centerpiece models, The Brush and Bolter can work with you to make that Independent Character or special unit stand out on the table. Be sure to click their ad on this page to see examples of their work. Ep 59Episode 59 - Competition and 40k: Part 3 (Elite Level Play)

E

Episode 59 is a huge one! For those that do not like long episodes, we apologize. However, there is a TON of great information in this episode. After we lead off with our usual Workbench and Games Played section, we dive into the third, and final episode around Competition and Warhammer 40k. To help us along we have brought in some of the big guns of the Warhammer 40k Tournament Scenes. TastyTaste from Blood of Kittens, who follows the ongoing GT circuit joins us for some discussion followed by Ben Mohlie (former Team Captain of ETC Team USA), Mike Brandt (Organizer of The Nova Open), Tony Kopach (2 time winner of The Nova Open and 1 time winner of Adepticon), and last but not least Blackmoor (Tournament Competitor and regular on The 11th Company Podcast). Each of these community players weighs in with their thoughts around competition and a whole lot more! It's a long show to sit through, but is a fitting cap on the whole series of Competitive episodes we have been running. We hope you enjoy! 0:00:00 – Show Intro 0:02:38 – Workbench and Games played 1:10:25 – Competition and 40k: Part 3(a) 1:33:14 – Interview with TastyTaste 1:10:25 – Competition and 40k: Part 3(b) 2:21:25 – Interview with Ben Mohlie 2:38:45 – Interview with Mike Brandt 3:08:45 – Competition and 40k: Part 3(c) 3:30:20 – Interview with Tony Kopach 3:42:00 – Competition and 40k: Part 3(c) 3:52:00 – Interview with Blackmoor 4:17:30 – Show Closing Links: KR Multicase – SPONSOR Secret Weapon Miniatures! – SPONSOR Smells Like Wargaming – SPONSOR Model Bits – SPONSOR Celesticon Game Convention Nova Open Blood of Kittens IC Campaign Site Forge World Games Workshop The Black Library Endgame Oakland Game Kastle Frontline Gaming
