Zach and Ben discuss some the things that they have learned over the years in regards to calling elk. When they first started elk hunting they only had one strategy, get a response and try to call bulls in with bugles. Over the last several seasons their strategies have changed and they call differently or don't call at all, depending on the situation. Both of us grew up in areas where the landscape mostly consists of big agriculture fields and very little timber. If you are like us, you often feel unable to relate to hunting shows telling you to hunt food sources in late season as you watch someone hunt over a standing crop field in frigid temperatures. Many hunters don’t hunt in an area that allows them to hunt near destination food sources like that or even in cold weather. So finding a good food source that deer pile into when it gets cold isn’t that easy. We have also found that targeting food sources during the late season isn’t the only way to hunt heavily pressured areas. In this episode, Larry and I talk about some of the recent realizations we have had about hunting in hill country. As we learn more about hunting deer in big timber settings we continue to get better at anticipating specific bedding areas. But we often push too far and ultimately spook the deer before we even get a chance to setup on them or stalk them. As last season ended my mission was to do my best to get a better understanding of why we made that mistake and how we could prevent the mistake during the offseason and into this season. After discussing the success and the failure we have had in the last several years we have come up with new strategies for these areas that will hopefully help us stay in the game more often without pushing too far and bumping deer. Larry and I talk about different strategies for both archery and firearm seasons and hopefully you can learn from what we believe has been our biggest mistake when hunting the hills! This year was our second year making the trip up to New York to try tracking down a buck in the snow. In this episode, Warb, Ted, Greg, and I talk about overlooked buck bedding tendencies in hill country. Hunting a lot of different areas over the last few years we have experienced bedding tendencies that often don't get mentioned in most buck bedding conversations. Often times buck bedding is described by specific winds and terrain features but in our experience in a lot of situations buck beds are not limited to those specific spots. It seems that bucks utilize different areas based off of food sources, wind, and cover and those areas don't always end up being on the leeward wind side of a hill on the upper third. Both my Dad and I grew up and lived in Ohio for most of our lives where we learned to hunt whitetails and turkeys.
