In this episode, John and Zach discuss hunting during the late season on heavily pressured public land. Public land can feel over-pressured during the late season but there are usually still some really good opportunities during the end of the season. Due to John’s occupation, over the years he has had a lot of time to target mature bucks on public land during the second half of the season. Zach and John discuss the challenges and benefits of late season hunting, how they find un-pressured areas, and their focus on food sources and bedding areas to pattern deer. They also discuss how a variety of weather conditions changes their strategy for that given day and how those weather conditions impact deer movement. They also discuss the challenges of finding fresh sign in lower deer density areas and what buck sign they expect to see in different habitats and terrain. Finally, they explain how they both value learning from hunting experiences in different areas and the importance of making informed theories based on observations and how that helps them stay persistent and confident. Topics Include: -overcoming the frustration of hunting public land after it has already been hit hard all season -what buck sign to look for during late season hunts and how that may change based off of deer density -how far mature bucks move in daylight during the late season -how to adjust to different weather conditions (other than cold and snow) to anticipate buck movement -wind shift bedding and how to capitalize on it NEW THP VIDEO PODCAST CHANNEL! - https://www.youtube.com/@thehuntingpublicpodcast/videos THP MERCH: https://bit.ly/30ZC1rm - Get 10% off THP Merch w/Code ZACH GoWild - https://bit.ly/3QFDWdj OPTICS - 10% off Vortex Optics w/code THP10 - https://bit.ly/3AOdKDQ TURKEY CALLS - Get 10% off Woodhaven Calls w/coupon code - THP2022 - http://bit.ly/2IagiSe MAPPING - Get 20% Off OnX Hunt! Luke Resop is studying to get his PHD at Mississippi State University which is the home of the MSU Deer Lab. In this conversation, Luke and Zach discuss various topics related to deer hunting and deer management. Luke shares his personal background and how he got into studying deer. They also discuss the individuality of deer and how each buck has its own personality and movement patterns. They touch on the difference between facts found through research and hunting lore, as well as the impact moon phase, weather, and hunting pressure have on deer movement. Finally, they explore the timing and duration of the rut and how it can vary depending on location. Luke and Zach also discuss the importance of spending time in the field throughout the whole season and how you may always have a chance to find crazy rut action not matter what month of the season you are hunting. Finally, the idea of bucks being related based on similar antler characteristics is debunked. TOPICS INCLUDE: -Deer are individuals and each buck has its own personality and movement patterns. -The difference between the peak of rutting activity and the peak of breeding. -Moon phase and it's impact on deer movement. -When is the rut over? -Antler characteristics are not a reliable indicator of bucks being related. Zach's dad, Doug, tells his craziest deer hunting story from the early 2000's. In this episode, Aaron and I talk about our experiences hunting turkeys during the middle of the season once they have been pressured by hunters for a week or two. In a lot of situations this changes the turkeys patterns that you may have noticed before the season started or during the first couple days after the opener. We usually have to change our tactics during this time of the season and if you have ever dealt with gobblers that seem call shy, stop gobbling when they hit the ground, or just constantly hang up out of range, then hopefully this podcast will help give you some tips for these situations! In this episode, Keith and I are talking about the importance of managing timber with our friends Larry, Ben, and Alex. We discuss why fire is an important tool in timber management, how to overcome hurdles that may prevent you from starting timber stand improvement projects, and creating goals for the land you are managing. From a hunting standpoint alone this property went from an average 80 acre parcel to the most attractive buck bedding location in the area! In this episode, I’ll be discussing hunting the northeast with Izaak Young of Vermont. Izaak spends as much time as he possibly can hunting on snow in multiple states, but he also isn’t afraid to get after it with a bow or on dry ground. What I enjoyed about talking with Izaak was his own unique way of taking advantage of a variety of situations when hunting deer in the northeast. If you hunt in low deer densities in the timber or you're trying to improve your skills hunting in the snow, Izaak will certainly teach you something! In the last episode, Ben and I discussed some of the changes to our strategy that we planned to make during our annual muzzleloader hunt. As we promised at the end of that episode, we recorded a follow up podcast talking about the results of the hunt. We were extremely pleased to see that our group worked great together and everyone was on the same page which resulted in a very successful trip! We talk about what worked well as well as some things we learned and can improve on next season. Topics Include: -the lessons we learned this season and what we want to change for next year -how we stopped bucks from slipping out behind the drivers -detailed stories of how we approached each successful hunt THP MERCH: https://bit.ly/30ZC1rm - Get 10% off THP Merch w/Code ZACH GoWild - Save 10% on orders w/code THP - https://bit.ly/3i4c15r OPTICS - 10% off Vortex Optics w/code THP10 - https://bit.ly/3AOdKDQ TURKEY CALLS - Get 10% off Woodhaven Calls w/coupon code - THP2023 - http://bit.ly/2IagiSe MAPPING - Get 20% Off OnX Hunt! This season is Ben and I's fourth season hunting the hills with a group doing deer drives. What we like the most about this style of hunting is the team aspect and how much we learn doing it. Every time we setup a drive we all experience a different part of the landscape and by sharing what we learn we speed up the learning process. Everything that we learn along the way also helps us for solo hunting throughout all stages of the season. So whether you hunt with a group or only enjoy hunting solo hopefully you can learn from our experiences!
