Interview with Writer and Director Deon Taylor | Traffik

Traffik follows Brea (Paula Patton), a journalist recently sidelined due to a distinct lack of immersion into her reporting. The timing could not be better when her boyfriend, John (Omar Epps), whisks her away for a lush romantic hideaway, tucked in the solace of the wilderness. Happenstance meets tragic timing as Brea and John cross paths with a young woman seemingly pleading for help, and a conspicuous biker gang looking for trouble. After an intense encounter at a local gas station, the couple arrive at the picturesque retreat where a weekend of indulging awaits. An ill-timed visit from mutual friends (Laz Alonso and Roselyn Sanchez) proceeds a horrific development: Brea has found the desperate woman's phone in her bag. As fate would have it, she has just arrived demanding the phone back. And she is not alone. Traffik sets the board as any number of thrillers, as our heroes find themselves trapped in an isolated locale with a group of sadistic outlaws bent on their demise. What sets the film apart, are the very intense stakes at play for our characters amid the backdrop of sex trafficking. As tensions escalate, a tragic everyday truth emerges from beneath the fiction, and Traffik take an enthralling, yet decidedly pointed look at this modern true horror. Traffik is pulse-pounding entertainment with an underlying message. And to elaborate on that message, as well as the film itself, is writer and director Deon Taylor. Responsible for the hit, Meet the Blacks, as well as its soon-to-be-released sequel, and the upcoming Dennis Quaid thriller, Motivated Seller, Taylor has been a filmmaker on the rise for several years. With Traffik, he veers into a complicated field of thriller meets education as our characters confront a very existential threat in today's world: sex trafficking. Enjoy our exclusive interview with writer and director Deon Taylor as he discusses his new film, Traffik, releasing nationwide on April 20, 2018.

Do We Have TOO MUCH Television? | Ep 308

40 years ago, television options were vastly different. Three channels, or maybe thirteen depending on where you great up, and not much else. If the President had a speech, your TV night was shot. As time rolled on, our entertainment options continued to gain traction, each decade taking another turn into more content. Once Netflix introduced streaming as a primary option, our choices exploded. By the time 2018 is over, there will have been around 500 scripted television shows on the air. Between network TV, cable, premium, and now streaming, have we finally arrived at the place where we simply have TOO MUCH television? Also this week: Westworld trolls its audience, The Rock opens up about his beef with Vin Diesel and we discuss how these dramatic tiffs influence us, Rogue One reshoots explained, reviews of A Quiet Place and Blockers, and much more. When Is It Time For Our Hero To Walk Away | Ep 306

With two festivals in three weeks, we have watched a LOT of movies recently. So much that something dawned on us: in all of these journeys of the human spirit, why does the hero never walk away? Think about it, does it make a hero less heroic if they reach a point where it's just too much for them? Were there moments in a movie or TV show where a hero going forward seemed to be the absolutely wrong choice? Our topic this episode revolves around this very concept of when is it OK for a hero to walk away? Also this week: Lord of the Rings TV is going to be very expensive, Steven Spielberg doesn't believe Netflix should be eligible for Oscars, reviews of Pacific Rim: Uprising and Unsane, upcoming releases, and another wrong of You Just Don't Get It. Where Do Video Game Adaptations Go Wrong | Ep 305

Tomb Raider is finally here. A reboot of the Angelina Jolie franchise, many still have no idea that those films and now this new one are based on a very successful video game series. The problem is this: while books have numerous critically and commercially successful films adapted from their works, and comic books have followed suit the last decade, video game adaptations are notoriously deemed poor imitations at best. If not bad, mediocre, and if not mediocre, simply not respected. So the question is this: Why can studios not seem to grasp how to properly adapt a video game to the screen? Also this week: Walking Dead's waning numbers, OJ Saying it wasn't me it was the one armed man. Reviews of Thoroughbreds, Strangers, and Jessica Jones Season 2. Interview with Director Brian O'Malley | The Lodgers

The Lodgers takes place in Ireland in the early 1900s. A family curse holds orphaned twins Rachel (Charlotte Vega) and Edward (Bill Milner) hostage, sectioned off from the outside world as punishment for the mistakes of their long-deceased kin. The rules are simple: be in bed by midnight, allow no one past the gates, and if either of them attempts to escape, the other will be met with a vengeful retribution. There are spirits both within and surrounding the walls of their estate to ensure these rules are enforced at all times. When Rachel's fate intertwines with Sean (Eugene Simon), a local war hero, she begins to believe it might just prove feasible to risk it all. While Rachel and Edward's plight is similarly horrific, they vary on the appropriate way to address it. Edward clings to his life, no matter how pointless it might seem, as Rachel grows stronger every day in the belief that it is a richer existence to taunt the prospect of death than to live solemnly on the outskirts of life. Vega's performance perfectly captures a tortured soul on the cusp of maturity, dangerously on the precipice of rebellion. Milner's character is much more desperate, losing his grasp on reality as he clings to his pitiful life of solitude and despair. Simon's Sean spends most of his screen time both enraptured with Rachel, while bewildered at her conundrum. Having the entirety of The Lodgers engulfed within a gothic atmosphere – bleak color aesthetic, tragic circumstances, ominous fog – affords director Brian O'Malley the opportunity to compliment his sleek visuals with meticulous audio cues that accent the dread carried within every frame. The film also bears the distinction of being partially filmed at Loftus Hall, an infamous "haunted house" in Ireland, whose natural look evokes feelings of paranoia both on screen and off. For our exclusive interview, director Brian O'Malley discusses the complexities and inner workings of filming The Lodgers. He explains how writer David Turpin came to take part in scoring the film, deciding that Charlotte Vega and Bill Milner completed his fateful pair, and what it was like filming within the walls of a bona fide haunted house. Take a listen to the interview below, and be sure to catch The Lodgers in select theaters and on VOD beginning February 23, 2018. An up-and-coming filmmaker, Anthony discusses his path from abroad to LA, his pursuit of his dream to create this film, as well as how a personal event helped shaped this story that now exists. One Last Night is releasing to film festivals currently, and look for it soon in other release options. Take a listen to our interview with director, Anthony Sabet. How To Defeat An Iconic Movie Hero | Ep 299

Last year, we debated on how, if we were to drop ourselves into a movie, we could defeat an iconic movie villain. It was a difficult task, though with a little creativity and a box of flies, we were able to fend off evil fairly successfully. This year, we wanted to turn the tables. The villains rarely win, which means heroes are far more difficult to bring down. Therefore, on this episode we put ourselves firmly in the shoes of supervillains and megalomaniacs everywhere and determine exactly how we would bring down iconic movie heroes such as Iron Man, Batman, Harry Potter, James Bond, and even Luke Skywalker! That's not nearly everything. We also have a report from RRStar.com reporter Adam Poulisse on Sundance and films Hereditary, Minding the Gap, and Piercing; discussion on Oscar snubs, Netflix's goal to change the industry, MoviePass' latest move, and Breaking Bad's anniversary; as well as reviews of Open House and Hostiles. Join in on our conversation and listen to the latest episode of The Hollywood Outsider. Discussed on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Movie and TV Podcast: (0:00 – 30:31)Film and TV Discussion: Do the Oscars really snub, MoviePass gets into the business of making movies, Netflix is changing the theater experience, and Breaking Bad turns 10. Introducing Smirk

bonus

Aaron introduces his latest podcast, Smirk, now available on your podcast app of choice, or at SmirkPodcast.com Magic. Wonder. Endless possibilities. This week, Amanda tells a story about a young boy, who imagination has awoken a spark of sorts. By the time she hits the hyperdrive to reach her moral, we will all recall that blinding innocence we held as a child. Welcome to Smirk. A podcast that covers society and culture through a storytelling lens. Part creative writing, part discussion, and always interesting. Each week our hosts brings a story to the show, a story they wrote themselves. These stories can cover any topic the host wants to discuss, it can be lighthearted or more serious. No one but the author knows if these tales are truth or fiction, and part of the fun is guessing while you're listening before the reality is made clear. We want to hear from you! If you want to share YOUR story, join the conversation by writing in to [email protected], and include your moral, or you can let us guess at it. This is the podcast that looks at truth, fiction, and reality. With a Smirk. Don't forget to subscribe to Smirk and share the show with your friends!

The Force Will Be With You, Justin. Always.

E

This week, we decided to delay our previously scheduled format until next week, as a member of The Hollywood Outsider family has passed on. We did not feel it appropriate to air a normal show, given the circumstances, so instead Aaron and Scott sit down to share their thoughts on the loss of a founding member of the show. We conclude with a respectfully edited re-airing of Justin Macumber's farewell episode, and we encourage you to dive into his collection of books and articles. As you listen to this episode, several of our hosts also wanted to share their thoughts on Justin with his audience. You can find those below. John My experiences with Justin started as a listener of the Hollywood Outsider. He was the voice that I loved disagreeing with…but most often he made me crazy when I had to agree with him. His insights and appreciation for pop culture helped make the show what it is today. It was a pleasure and an honor to share the few episodes I could with him. A great wealth of knowledge has been lost, fare thee well Justin. Brian My involvement with The Hollywood Outsider has afforded me countless unique experiences, laughs, and friendships over the years. One of those treasures was Justin Macumber. (My God, he would never let me forget that compliment lol). If there was one thing Justin and I were guaranteed to have a good time doing together, it was making Aaron frustrated. We would finish the pre-show greetings and sound checks. Everybody's ready to get started. All's quiet. Aaron would inhale and then… "UTINNI!!!" The Star Wars sound bite that would trip up Aaron's focus enough to the point of having to do multiple retakes. It never quit being funny (even though Aaron would say otherwise). Justin's cackling laughter always made it worth the cost of whatever eye rolling I could feel Aaron sending my way. His honest laughs were so infectious that you could not help but join in and I knew comedy gold was struck when I heard that loud laugh. Things weren't always fun and games. There were heated moments for sure. There were times I would feel like FedEx-ing a throat punch to him. As with any family, you have your ups and downs. The Hollywood Outsiders are no different. But by the end of the night, there was usually a priceless and hilarious discussion that never seemed to get recorded. He was always in the middle of it – if not leading it. And a "goodnight" to everybody that sometimes included a "love you guys". It's hard to believe I write this having spent hundreds of hours with Justin, yet never even had lunch with him in person. That's one of the interesting things about the time we live in. You can have a meaningful bond with someone you've never physically met. We got to see him chase his dream of being a published author. Consoled him as he worried about his wife's own health scare. Shared Christmas gifts with one another. And now he's gone. It's not fair. We'll never get to hear his squeaky chair; hear him softly sing "It's Been Awhile" anytime that phrase was said; or introduce himself with his own theme music again. And that is a hole that'll never be filled (that's what she said *wink*). We love you. We miss you. Farewell, my friend. Aaron Many years ago, we were putting together a podcast to talk about entertainment, and we needed a voice. Someone distinct, insightful, contemplative, occasionally combative, and passionate. Scott knew a fella who had already established himself in the podcast community with his show catering to writers, and his name was Justin Macumber. With Brian in the mix, we all clicked almost instantly, each of us taking swipes at each other's tastes, and often Justin and I specifically would engage in heated debates that would ultimately end in no winner declared, but everyone listening laughing hysterically. Or ironically. One of those. The truth of the matter is, there were times we each probably wanted to lock each other in the LOST hatch, but more times than not, we were smiling and over it in minutes. We are both very passionate about the things we love, and as a person who loves a good debate, Justin was always a stellar sparring partner. Along the way, he also became a friend. He loved to tell me when I was wrong, and no topic was off limits. I recall once we even had a hefty argument over my parenting choices, which in hindsight was pretty hilarious because of how ridiculously inappropriate his advice was. At the same time, there were numerous instances where Justin and his "so left he's leaning sideways" manner helped me see sides to a subject I never would have considered, had he not persisted in only that way he can. We ended up bonding over numerous interests, and we even did a few side projects together. Those efforts led directly to my friendships with Troy, Wayne, Darrell, and many others. Looking back, it's amazing to think of the many branches a single relationship leads to. It all culminated in a trip to SXSW where we spent 5 days together watching movi

Marvel Sidekicks, Father-Child TV Relationships, 1987, and Movie Title Songs | The Best of HO: Volume 3

We are taking the week off to prep for next week's The Hollywood Outsider Awards, but that does NOT mean you will not receive something to ring in your new ears! For this extended bonus episode of our show, we look back on four of our most popular topics from this past year. We kick things off with our Marvel Sidekicks Movie Battle Royale from episode 270. Everyone has their favorite hero from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but what about those underserved heroes BEHIND the heroes? Listener Reece joins in and by the end of our debate, we will have crowned our own champion. Then we turn to television, as we discuss who maintained the strongest father-child relationships on television from episode 275. It's a heartfelt discussion with plenty of laughter, as Aaron's SMIRK podcast co-hosts join him to debate which TV dads have done the best job of creating a bond with their brood. Our most popular episode of this past year, was also our most controversial as we hopped into a Delorean and headed back to 1987 to discuss our favorite movies and TV from that era. And finally, we close out with SONG! What is the greatest original movie title song of all time? Could it be Ghostbusters? Or Purple Rain? You're about to find out as long-time listener Tammy joins in to help us crown a lyrical champion in another smashing Movie Battle Royale! If you are new to the show, this is a highlight reel of what listeners enjoyed earlier in the year. And if you are a long-time listener, enjoy four of your favorite topics all in one episode! Interview with Director Paul McGuigan and Author Peter Turner | Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool

Over 30 years ago, Peter Turner published a memoir on his relationship with screen icon, Gloria Grahame, titled "Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool". Unlike most celebrity tales, this was not one rife with scandal or despair. This was a story about love, regret, and kinship. Over 30 years later, Peter's story has finally arrived on the silver screen. Annette Bening stars as Gloria Grahame, an aging acting icon who learns she is ailing. Rather than suffering alone, she calls on her former love, Peter (Jamie Bell), and requests to stay with him and his family. After taking her in, Peter begins to reflect upon the love they had before, pondering where it all went wrong. And more importantly, where do Gloria and Peter go from here? For this exclusive interview, Aaron sits down with the director of "Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool", Paul McGuigan. He discusses a myriad of topics including why this story felt like one he needed to tell, working with Annette Bening and Jamie Bell, and what it was like having the inspiration for the story readily available. Also, Aaron talks with Peter Turner himself, to get behind the movie magic and discover the love behind the story, and what it is like seeing your own life on the screen. Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool releases on 12/29 in LA and NY, and the film itself is a beautiful celebration of life and love. And to compliment this tale, enjoy these two interviews with the wonderfully engaging talents of Paul McGuigan and Peter Turner. Interview with Director Kurt Voelker | The Bachelors

The Bachelors stars JK Simmons as Bill, a calculus teacher who is still reeling from the death of his beloved wife, and mother to their son Wes (Josh Wiggins). The film opens with Bill at his son's bedside, explaining they need to make a change. So they pick up their life and move to Los Angeles where they begin anew at a private school run by Bill's old friend, Paul (Kevin Dunn). Bill and Wes both welcome new women into their lives in the form of Julie Delpy's French teacher, Carine, and a damaged recluse in Odeya Rush's Lacy. Bill struggles to move on with his life, while Wes desperately wants to live again, and both women play a part in waking them each up to letting go of the past and embracing the moment. The Bachelors is a very sweet film that takes a look at what happens when two people lose the most important person in their lives. It's about grief, love, loss, and life. For this exclusive interview, writer and director Kurt Voelker stops by to discuss his latest film, why the topic spoke to him, keeping grief grounded, and how he came into the stellar cast that makes up his film. Interview with Director David Burkman | Haze

Haze is director David Burkman's take on fraternity and sorority hazing. Shortly after another pledge has died while being hazed, we follow Nick, a new pledge who takes us through this journey of humiliation, debauchery, and occasionally brotherhood. We also follow Mimi, Nick's best friend who pledges to the affiliate sorority so she can be closer to Nick. Unlike Nick, this doesn't mean as much to Mimi, it's simply a way to keep them together. The film follows both of them as they engage in numerous obstacles, parties, and even crimes, all while forgetting to handle their studies, and ultimately leads up to Hell Week. Also, Nick's brother Pete is trying to bust the fraternity doing anything that will bring them down. For our exclusive interview, writer and Director David Burkman dropped by to break down his new film and why college hazing was such a personal story to tell. We discuss making the film, as well as how realistic many of these hazing rituals actually are. Don't miss Haze, which is now available on VOD and in selected theaters, nor this interview with David Burkman. Interview with Director Camille Thoman | Never Here

In Never Here, Mireille Enos stars as Miranda Fall, an installation artist who follows, photographs and documents total strangers for her respective pieces. Late one night after a show, her married lover Paul (Sam Shepard in his final role) witnesses a crime outside Miranda's apartment. She then agrees to cover Paul's witnessing of the crime as Miranda takes his place. After she partakes in a lineup - where she obviously cannot pick the offender - Miranda follows one of the curious men from the lineup and a new art project begins. As she comes to believe someone is stalking her, she ascertains that it could just be the man she believes to have committed the original crime, or is her own voyeurism finally getting the best of her? Never Here is a film that wears it's shade of Hitchcock meshed with the more creative aspects of artistic expression proudly on its sleeve. It is very much a thriller, while at the same time serving as a thinking piece on voyeurism and many of our own beliefs that no one's privacy remains secret in this day and age. Aaron sits down with the writer and director of Never Here, Camille Thoman. Camille has a unique canvas to showcase her film, as the basic construct is that of a thriller, yet there is much more at play here as it bleeds into feelings of paranoia and perhaps even shades of our own voyeuristic guilt. Camille elaborates on this blending of genres, why Mireille was the perfect choice for Miranda, and working with Sam on his final film. Never Here releases in theaters October 20th, 2017. The Modern TV Villain Battle Royale and Kingsman: The Golden Circle Reactions | Ep 287

E

What makes a great TV villain? Many believe it is the depths of evil one can go, while others believe it is how shrewdly a character can maneuver within the fabric of society, bending a weaker man's will to their own. On this week's show, we debate who is the greatest villain on television over the last ten years, and many of our selections might just surprise you. Could Joffrey rule them all? Is Boyd Crowder just sly enough to eek out a victory? Ben Linus seems like a sure winner. But can you ever truly count out Rowan Pope? Find out on this week's podcast, as we arrive at one ultimate winner for the Modern TV Villain Battle Royale! Also on this week's podcast: Tomb Raider finally showcases a trailer, Linda Hamilton returns to Terminator, release dates for John Wick and IT sequels, review of Friend Request, upcoming releases including American Made, Flatliners, and Till Death Do Us Part, recommendations, and much more. After our normal show, we head back to Matthew Vaughn's hyper-stylized take on spy flicks with Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Does the sequel cash in on the potential from the first film? Was Julianne Moore the right choice for Poppy? Is Eggsy evolving or is Harry weighing him down? We have different opinions on this one, so don't miss the discussion.
