Cheering you on, Kat Lee --- PART 1, DAY 2: 2 CHRONICLES 36:22-23; EZRA 6:1-5 AND 14-15 22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that Yahweh’s word by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying, 23 “Cyrus king of Persia says, ‘Yahweh, the God of heaven, has given all the kingdoms of the earth to me; and he has commanded me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among you of all his people, Yahweh his God be with him, and let him go up.’” EZRA 6:1-5 AND 14-15 Then Darius the king made a decree, and the house of the archives, where the treasures were laid up in Babylon, was searched. 2 A scroll was found at Achmetha, in the palace that is in the province of Media, and in it this was written for a record: 3 In the first year of Cyrus the king, Cyrus the king made a decree: Concerning God’s house at Jerusalem, let the house be built, the place where they offer sacrifices, and let its foundations be strongly laid; with its height sixty cubits,[a] and its width sixty cubits; 4 with three courses of great stones and a course of new timber. Let the expenses be given out of the king’s house. 5 Also let the gold and silver vessels of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought to Babylon, be restored and brought again to the temple which is at Jerusalem, everything to its place. You shall put them in God’s house. 14 The elders of the Jews built and prospered, through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. They built and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the decree of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia. 15 This house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king. This week's commentary is by Ali Shaw. MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER ENJOYS LEGO SETS. It’s really incredible how a detailed final model is built from tiny, individual squares. During the process, units are put together into oddly shaped chunks. Without patience and master plans at hand, it’s hard to see how these seemingly random pieces could come together in just the right way, in the right order, to make a “masterpiece.” Today’s reading builds on yesterday’s; we’re given more pieces to the background story of the Book of Esther. We begin to see a design built by the hand of Providence. Only God could have set the historical timeline and orchestrated the details and events so perfectly to accomplish His will in saving His people. The prophecies of Isaiah 45:1 and Jeremiah 29:10 are fulfilled. Cyrus the Great, already King of Persia for 20 years, defeated the Babylonians in 539 B.C. and inherited the exiled Jews. During “the first year of Cyrus” in 538 B.C. (2 Chronicles 36:22), he decreed that they could return home to rebuild the Jerusalem Temple. His decree came at the end of the prophesied 70 year captivity, which had begun during the first of Nebuchadnezzar’s invasions around 608/605 B.C. and lasted until the decree in 538 B.C.* The Persian Empire operated differently from the Assyrian and Babylonian Empires that had ruled before. Rather than uprooting conquered peoples and incorporating them into their kingdoms, they let captives remain home to serve under local governors to prevent revolts. God used this important “Lego piece” detail in a providential way to get His people home. God also used the Persians’ religion to accomplish His will. One might believe Cyrus’ heart was softened toward God since he dismissed the Jews to build a temple. But interestingly, the term “God of heaven” does not point to Cyrus’ belief in God, but showed the nature of Zoroastrianism, the monotheistic yet inclusive faith he practiced. In another twist, temples weren’t important to Zoroastrian faith! These details are more building blocks of God’s plan. Many Jews returned home to rebuild the temple but the work was later halted by their enemies and an order from King Artaxerxes. (See Ezra 4) Our sovereign God stepped in and put the pieces together when King Darius I searched and found instructions and the decree and ordered for them to be enforced. All of this assures us that only God manages the timeline and details of history and His hand of Providence is mighty in caring for all of His children! *Allowing for differences in ancient and modern calendars, the exile lasted 70 years. KEY VERSE Thus said Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth has the LORD God of heaven given me; and he has charged me to build him an house in Jerusa

Cheering you on, Kat Lee --- STUDY: 1:1 - Day 1 of the Then I Will Go Study of Esther WEEK 1, DAY 1: 2 CHRONICLES 36:11-21 11 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. 12 He did that which was evil in Yahweh his God’s sight. He didn’t humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from Yahweh’s mouth. 13 He also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God; but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart against turning to Yahweh, the God of Israel. 14 Moreover all the chiefs of the priests, and the people, trespassed very greatly after all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted Yahweh’s house which he had made holy in Jerusalem. 15 Yahweh, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place; 16 but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until Yahweh’s wrath arose against his people, until there was no remedy. 17 Therefore he brought on them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or gray-headed. He gave them all into his hand. 18 All the vessels of God’s house, great and small, and the treasures of Yahweh’s house, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes, all these he brought to Babylon. 19 They burned God’s house, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all of its valuable vessels. 20 He carried those who had escaped from the sword away to Babylon, and they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia, 21 to fulfill Yahweh’s word by Jeremiah’s mouth, until the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths. As long as it lay desolate, it kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years. This week's commentary is by Ali Shaw. WE’VE ALL SEEN IT BEFORE and maybe have experienced it firsthand. The child who didn’t listen to wise instruction, the teen who needed to learn everything “the hard way,” or the celebrity who fell from stardom after a scandal surfaced have all learned this same fact: rebellion has consequences. Early in Jewish history, the Israelites had demanded a person-king, rejecting God as king. First was King Saul. After his disobedience (1 Samuel 13:11-15), God promised the kingdom to David, son of Jesse, whose offspring would rule forever (2 Samuel 7:12-16, Matthew 1:1-17). Solomon, David’s son, reigned next and built the temple in Jerusalem. But under the reign of his son, Rehoboam, the unified kingdom was split in two: Judah, which had a mix of godly and evil kings, and Israel, whose line of evil kings led the people deep into idolatry. Through alliances with Israel, the kings of Judah followed Israel’s idolatrous example. In today’s passage, we see how Esther and other Jews came to be in Persia. We learn of the siege and captivity of Judah, a story of rebellion and consequences. Verses 11 through 16 are so sad! God had always been so faithful and generous to His children, yet they did not follow Him, nor turn to Him with repentant faith immediately after they had strayed. Instead, they brushed God aside in nasty rebellion. They despised His words and scoffed at His prophets until He was provoked to carry out a plan to save them from themselves. Yet through it all, God was involved. Though it may not have appeared so to the nonobservant onlooker, Providence was carried out when, during the third and final siege in 587 B.C., Nebuchadnezzar entered Jerusalem and destroyed the temple, city gates, and walls. God would use this defeat and the subsequent Babylonian exile to purify Israel of their idolatry. Yes, rebellion has consequences. When we repent, God can use those consequences to bring us closer into fellowship with Him, if we allow it. The story of the capture of Jerusalem can be our reminder to search our hearts for rebellion against Him. If (when) we find it, we have two options: don’t or do turn to God. If we continue in our rebellion, we can be sure that our sovereign Father will deal with us as He sees fit (Hebrews 12:311). When we run to His open arms with repentant hearts, we can be assured that He will forgive (Isaiah 1:18, 55:6-7, and Luke 15:10). Praise God! KEY VERSE The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent persistently to them by his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place. S1 Ep 45How to Plan in Survival Mode
This post is by Cindy Chen. Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12, NIVThere are seasons that call for less planning. When we first bring home a baby. When our world is upended by illness or grief. When we're at home indefinitely because of stay-at-home orders. Having no concrete schedule does not mean we’re better off making zero plans. We are still entrusted with our days, even if they seem to be redundant or purposeless. But in seasons of survival, planning involves a different perspective. We need to plan for the practical, relational, and big picture with a new lens of intentionality.
