S1 Ep 109Kris Gemmell - World Champion, Olympian, Head of Commercial and Marketing ITU

Kris Gemmell is one of the most influential people in the world of Triathlon. His career as an athlete was remarkable, with some of the most epic battles to the finish line we’ve ever seen. He went to two Olympics, two Commonwealth Games, and achieved 110 World Triathlon starts, 29 podiums and 9 wins. Kris transitioned from athlete to partnerships and marketing positions within World Triathlon, previously known as the International Triathlon Union and hasn’t looked back. He’s now the Head of Marketing and Commercial for World Triathlon, where the World Triathlon Series continues to grow and deliver the greatest professional racing we see consistently in the world. When Kris moved from Palmerston North to Christchurch in the late 1990s to study at the University of Canterbury, he was an aspiring Rugby union player. However an injury led to a chain of events that resulted in Kris coming to the attention and under the guidance of Doctor John Hellemans. Hellemans is a well known multiple World Champion Triathlete and coach. In 1997, Gemmell competed in the ITU junior World Championships in Perth Australia coming a 6th in a field that included future World Champion Ivan Rana. Kris' breakthrough race on the world stage in the senior ranks came in 2000 when he claimed 3rd place at the Tokyo round of the ITU World Cup. Gemmell was selected for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England where he placed second for New Zealand and sixth in overall. In 2007, Gemmell had enjoyed another consistent season with three podiums and two fourth places. One of those fourths was at the Beijing round of the ITU World Cup and this result gained Kris a nomination for the New Zealand Triathlon team to race at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. At Beijing, he finished in 39th place. He qualified again for the 2012 Summer Olympics, and finished in 15th place. S1 Ep 108Christian Schauf - Serial adventurer, athlete, entrepreneur, and philanthropist

In this episode of The Greg Bennett Show, Greg chats to friend and entrepreneur, Christian Schauf. Christian's journey to date is extraordinary. Building several successful startups, from apple cider, to outdoor extreme event companies, to survival gear, to heading up a successful touring rockband. He’s also led marketing campaigns for several large international brands, including Harley-Davidson and GoPro. His newest venture is the Unchartered Supply company. Unchartered as quoted on their website is “Gear to get you out there and all the way back.” Unchartered has exploded over the past few years. The Business started in November of 2016. In 2017 the core product the Seventy2 was featured & kicked ass on the TV show “Shark Tank.” The Seventy2 has been featured in the likes of TIME, Outside Magazine, Popular Mechanics, and The Wall Street Journal. Customers have included government organizations such as the CIA and FBI, as well as companies like Nike, Warner Brothers and Airbnb. Listen to why he decided to create the most comprehensive 72-hour survival system on the market. Timestamps 0:00 - Introduction to show. 4:46 - You moved to Park City… how has the move been? Are you planning on staying? 6:04 - Christian is the ultimate outdoors man ... he talks through the wild ride from beginning to now. Christian grew up on a farm in Wisconsin where we had clones, a biodiesel plant, and thousands of acres of crops. He played in a band around the world for a decade and traveled to Iraq 40 times ... he even had his 30th birthday party in Sadaam’s bedroom. 10:48 - The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter - Embrace Discomfort to Reclaim Your Wild, Happy, Healthy Self. 11:20 - We are in the softest of times and people are trying to 'harden' themselves up more and more. Humans always tend to trend towards easy ... People are living more urban lives, dependent on technology and simply not getting the experiences needed to handle unforeseen emergencies. This, coupled with a rise in emergencies related to population growth, climate change, political unrest and more, and there is a greater need than ever to help people through those situations where they are on their own. 18:39 - Christian gives some real perspective about a 'hard day' after meeting several US Troops in Iraq. 18:04 - One of Christians fav quotes is, "Life is not a dress rehearsal'. He explains his journey as a musician, touring with Prince, then touring through Iraq. 22:59 - From being named Armed Forces Entertainer of the Year by the Pentagon for his time entertaining troops at some of the most dangerous bases in Iraq (he made more than 40 visits over eight years) to surviving a few life or death situations, Christian Schauf initially had the vision for the Seventy2 while sitting in traffic in LA after a light rain shower. He wondered: ‘If a light rain can stop traffic, what happens if an earthquake hits? Would I be prepared to not only help myself but those around me? Would the people around me be prepared? 25:12 - How do you consciously control the fear knowing each day might present a 'real' life or death situation? 29:18 - Uncharted Supply Company was founded to prepare any adventurer for unexpected survival situations. Situations that occur everyday, like earthquakes, floods, or even power outages. Christian Schauf started the company after driving through Colorado in the middle of a blizzard and seeing dozens of hapless motorists stranded on the side of the highway, hunkering down for a long, cold night. Though rescue teams were surely on the way, they were at the mercy of Mother Nature until those teams arrived. There had to be a better way. He couldn’t find an easy solution, so he created one: The SEVENTY2™ Survival System. A 72-hour survival kit that anybody could use in the event of a dangerous situation. Expert-tested and expert approved, out of this system Uncharted Supply Company was born. Now we are a team of adventurers and philanthropists bent on taking the worst case scenario and turning it into a somewhat-unpleasant-but-survivable scenario. 33:30 - What is the 'why' for Uncharted Supply Co.? Our vision is to empower humans on a large scale, and build communities ready to open doors and help neighbors when tough times arise. 46:39 - Shark Tank - Tell us about the Shark Tank experience and how that affected your Uncharted Supply business. "Our launch on Indiegogo was a meaningful moment that let me know my idea was on point. Shark Tank took things up an entire new level, but I’m most proud of our team’s ability to build products, market them, and make a profit without any big exposure moments. We are building a brand that people trust, respect and love." 54:34 - When the COVID pandemic hit, talk us through how it affected and changed the business. 58:41 - Uncharted is no longer only an online shop ... you've now transitioned to retail stores across the country, tell us how that came about and how it's connected more customers to Uncharted prod

S1 Ep 96Nicola Spirig - The greatest female Olympian in the sport of Triathlon - Gold, Silver and five Olympic Games

Podcast: The Greg Bennett Show Episode: Nicola Spirig Welcome to The Greg Bennett show, a Bennett Endurance podcast hosted by Former Professional Olympic Athlete Greg Bennett. Greg chats with the world's greatest athletes and high performers to find out how they got to the top of the world and how they are able to sustain it. In today’s episode, he is joined by his wife Laura, and they hear from Nicola Spirig. Nicola Spirig is a Swiss professional triathlete. She is a five-time Olympian, the 2012 Olympic, and six times European champion in women's triathlon. Nicola is married to fellow retired athlete Reto Hug, has three children, and during her athletic career completed a law degree. As the conversation kicks off, Greg asks Nicola to reflect on this past year in the sport. She has been training and her next large goal is to complete an IronMan race in under eight hours. Even if a goal sounds impossible, she says it’s important to try, especially when the intention is to inspire others to follow their dreams. Nicola isn’t an extrovert who loves being in front of others, but she does love working with young people and is glad her status as an Olympian has given her this platform. Going into this year’s Tokyo Olympics, Nicola was ready. She was able to prepare without injury, compete in and win other good races like the European Championships, and beat some of her own personal best times. On race day, even though everyone had prepared for a hot day, it was raining, which for Nicola wasn’t a problem and she placed sixth. Today, she says she’s happy with her performance and wouldn’t change anything even though she didn’t get the medal she was aiming for. Nicola grew up with parents who were sports teachers and had the luxury of trying many different sports. For a long time, she didn’t think of triathlon as a career, but rather as something she loved to do. She only considered herself a professional athlete for about two years, despite being involved in the sport for much longer. Her preparation around the London 2012 Olympics was nearly perfect and her at a professional level. She won that triathlon just ahead of Lisa Norden, with their times being the same, and only a photograph was able to be used to separate their crossing the finish line. For the Rio Olympics, things were different. She was injured, the defending Olympic champion, and she’d had a baby in the years since her Olympic win. She took home the silver from that race and says the experience was much different than the London Olympics, but she was still very happy with her performance. She reminds listeners that while yes it takes a lot to get a medal in the Olympic games, it also takes a lot to finish fourth, sixth, or tenth. Laura and Greg then ask Nicola rapid-fire questions covering everything from TV and movies to household chores, to her taste in music. Then they wrap up the episode with Nicola sharing what her day-to-day life is like these days. Find show notes, discount codes, and more here. S1 Ep 89Six-time Ironman World Champion‘s, Mr. Dave Scott & Mr. Mark Allen - PTO, Collins Cup, Kona Ironman

These days in the sport of Triathlon we love to throw around names like Jan Frodeno, Alistair Brownlee, Javier Gomez as being the greatest of all time, and obviously, they’re all in the conversation. But, when I rewind the clock there are other names that we need to start throwing into that discussion, Simon Lessing, Scott Molina, Greg Welch, Brad Bevan, Mike Pigg.... and the list goes on. And then there are two that I look at, that influenced my desire to become a professional Triathlete more than anyone else. And I believe, They have impacted the sport as a whole more than anyone else. They have been on this show separately in episodes 5 and 7. But today I’m joined with both of them on the show together. What a privilege it is to have Dave Scott sit with me in the studio and Mark Allen call in. We discuss the Collins Cup from the past week, Ironman Kona – or lack thereof, the sport of Triathlon as a whole, and well, anything and everything. We end with some fun rapid-fire questions. S1 Ep 85Flora Duffy - Tokyo Olympic Games Champion, Commonwealth Games Champion, 9 Time World Champion

If you’ve listened to this show, you would have heard me say in the Introduction to each episode – "Success comes to those who endure just one moment longer." Well, Today’s guest is the epitome of that quote. She has been steadily improving her craft for two decades. Building upon each day, month, and year to reach the very top of the sport – To become the Olympic Champion. She’s one of the most decorated Triathletes in history: Now with Olympic Gold in Tokyo, Japan Commonwealth Gold on the Gold Coast, Australia And 9 World Titles including: Two ITU Triathlon World Championships Two ITU Cross World Championships And Five Xterra Triathlon World Championships It hasn’t been all smooth sailing, she’s had setbacks and had to rebuild numerous times, but she keeps getting back up and rebuilding stronger. She’s been a friend of ours for over 10 years and she’s one of the most down-to-earth champions you could ever spend time with. She is the first gold medalist for her country of Bermuda. In this episode, Flora describes what it took to win Gold in Tokyo, the journey to get there, her team, the good times and the bad, and the race itself. S1 Ep 84Kristian Blummenfelt returns to the show as the Tokyo Olympic Gold medalist

Kristian Blummenfelt was last on the show in episode 14. I said in that episode, that I believe the next generation of Triathletes is here. And I don’t mean to brag, I simply have been so impressed with his preparation and build over the last 10 years... I said in the episode, that I believed he would win the Gold medal in Tokyo. Since that episode, I’ve had his coach Arild Tveiten episode 69 and his training partner Gustav Iden episode 52 on the show. Between all of them, I listened to what they were doing for preparation for these Games and I was left without a doubt, that they would be ready. In this episode, Kristian breaks down the race, from the false start all the way through to his incredible surge to victory with just over a kilometer left in the run. He describes his preparation and his mindset going into the Games, and what that medal means to him. We conclude by discussing what's next. It blew my mind what he has planned. S1 Ep 83Greg, Laura, and Marc Jenkins dissect the Tokyo Olympic Games Triathlons

We’re in the middle of the Olympic Games and if you’re like Laura and me, we find ourselves watching everything we can. Simply watching the highs and lows of sport and the emotions that go with it make you feel alive and connected. Marc Jenkins is a longtime friend of ours and one of the greatest athletes and coaches that Britain has ever produced. He understands the highs and lows of the Olympics. In 2004, in the Athens Olympics, he was in a bike crash, broke his wheel, and carried his bike on his shoulder as he ran for 2km to get it fixed. He then went on to finish the 10km run. Obviously not the result he had hoped for, but such, was his determination to finish. He then coached his wife Helen to three Olympic Games and multiple world titles. He lives and breathes the sport of Triathlon much as we do. We thought, who better to bring on to the show, to dissect the Tokyo Olympic Triathlons. In this episode, we dissect the men's and women's Tokyo Olympic Games Triathlons. We discuss the stand-out performances and give some advice to the athletes that may feel a little flat after their performances. Some great takeaways in this episode. The Olympics are finally here. And if you’re like me, you’ve loved the Olympics since you can remember. I’ve always enjoyed watching the best in the world battle it out on the big stage... none more so than the sport of Triathlon. I’ve always wondered what it takes to win on that special day, and what it must feel like crossing that finish line knowing that you are the Olympic champion, and how does that heavy medal affects the rest of your life? All of them I admire and would call mates, the best men you could ever share a beer with... all-around top blokes. They’ve all been on the show at least once. You can find their past episodes on your podcast app of choice. But never have they all been together on the one show. I’m feeling very honored that they have all agreed to come on, and amazed that we were able to coordinate times from all corners of the world. In this episode, each of the Olympic Champions shares their stories, what they were thinking the days leading into the race? What was going through their head at the pivotal moment of the race? When did they feel like they had it won and what was the initial feeling they each had as they crossed the line knowing they were the Olympic Champion. Jan Frodeno's answer will make you laugh. S1 Ep 81Frank Shorter - Olympic Marathon Champion - "father of the modern running boom"

In this episode of The Greg Bennett Show, I chat with my neighbor, Frank Shorter in Boulder, Colorado Frank is a remarkable man, who by all accounts is the father of the modern running boom. His Olympic marathon gold in 1972, is generally regarded as the launch of this running movement. He followed this gold medal performance 4 years later at the Montreal Olympics with a silver medal behind an unknown East German who was later documented to be part of that nation’s doping system. Throughout the 1970s he won a multitude of US National Championships over the 5k, 10k, and marathon distances. He won the ‘Fukuoka International marathon Championship’ on 4 occasions. But he’s more than a runner and Olympic Champion, he was instrumental in helping athletes make a living from what at the time was mostly amateur. And from 2000 to 2003, he was the chairman of the United States Anti-Doping Agency, a body that he helped to establish. This was a very special conversation for me. It truly felt like he was chatting with one of the great icons of the world of sport. Frank shares his journey into running and when he realized that he had some ability. He describes the emotions of the terrorist attacks on the 1972 Olympics and how he had to compartmentalize the trauma of what happened and focus on the job at hand. He discusses the running into the stadium at those Games with a 2-minute lead and he shares the 1976 Montreal Games, and his thoughts on drugs in sport, his relationship with USA iconic runner Steve Prefontaine and the impact of his sudden death. And so much more. If you love sport, if you love sports history then this is a must-listen. Do yourself a favor and listen through to the end. You won't be disappointed. Jan Frodeno is a very special return guest. He’s a great champion and a good friend. He’s arguably the greatest Triathlete of All-time? He describes the difficulty of getting to the USA but then the sheer joy of getting back on the start line and testing himself. In part 2, We really get a glimpse of the life behind the athlete. Jan discusses self-doubt, and what it's like to always have a target on his back. He describes what his talent truly is and what a typical day really looks like. S1 Ep 61Ed Baker - Champion Ironman athlete - Investor, Entrepreneur, and Growth Specialist - Facebook/ Uber

In this episode of The Greg Bennett Show, Greg has a wonderful conversation with one of the brilliant minds of the 21st century. A key figure in developing growth with some of the world's leading tech companies. Ed is also an extraordinary athlete, winning his first Ironman after only 6 months of being in the sport of Triathlon. Father of four. Harvard Grad, MBA at Stanford Business school, Investor, Entrepreneur, and Growth Specialist. Previously Vice President of Growth at Uber and Head of International Growth at Facebook. He speaks Mandarin and Japanese. And just recently at the youthful age of 39, he found Ironman. And he’s not just good at his new chosen sport, he’s exceptional. At his first Ironman at 2018 Lake Placid he won overall in 9hr 18, only a few months after he started the sport, and qualified for Kona IM World Championships in the process… a month after that breakthrough at Lake Placid he then went and raced the Copenhagen IM and was first age grouper in 8.27 and finished 10th overall including the professionals. On top of all of that, he’s a great guy, incredibly down-to-earth, and simply a genuine person. In this episode, Ed describes his journey into endurance sport and how running in high school enabled him to find confidence and belief in himself in a time when many of us are struggling with insecurities and are finding ourselves. He discusses his time running at Harvard and post University and then his void of physical activity for 10 years as he was consumed by work building his own company's Datesite.com, Friend.ly, and then eventually at Facebook and Uber. He describes the cultures of Facebook and Uber and his relationship with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Ed shares how he decides to invest and become an advisor in various companies. We discuss growth and how Ed has used both science and art to grow all these companies. A lot to learn from this one, from one of the great minds in investing and entrepreneurship. S1 Ep 60Craig Alexander joins Greg to discuss Triathlon and how the sport has evolved over 40 years

Craig Alexander (Crowie) was Greg's very first guest on The Greg Bennett Show well over a year ago. He’s been a good mate of Greg's for 25 plus years. They’ve logged thousands of miles together in training and they’ve had some fun battles in races around the world. Greg has taken enormous pleasure in watching his incredible success over the years - his 5 world titles and his relentless pursuit and perseverance to become the champion he is. They’ve done 5-hour rides and there’s rarely a moment of silence between them. They’ve shared coffee’s and beers, and plenty of laughs. Greg's not sure he can think of a better man to have a long conversation about anything and everything. This is simply two mates sharing some stories, their thoughts on the world of Triathlon and how it’s changed over 30+ years, and some off-topic random discussion as well. In this episode, Craig and Greg discuss the early years at Balmoral Triathlon club in Sydney and how they use to sleep in their cars before races and wait for the barrel draws to win meat packs, and how they always worked jobs to simply try to stay afloat to get o the next race. Greg and Craig discuss who is the greatest Triathlete of all time. How races have changed and how equipment changes have impacted the sport.
