Stacks in the 33 Stack Defense| FBCP S05 Episode 16

The 33 Stack Defense is one of my favorites. Fast. Aggressive. Attacking. Simple. The Stacks are a big part of that. The 3-5-3 Defense, Georgia Military style, was the first defense I ever installed on my own. I've loved it ever since. Even when running other fronts as a base, the 3-3-5 Defense (or 5-3, or any combination of letters and numbers you want) has always been available as a change-up in our package. This episode of The Football Coaching Podcast breaks down the feature that makes the defense unique. The stacks. It's a great look at the concepts that are central to our 33 Stack Defensive System at Joe Daniel Football, and what you should look out for as a stack defense coach. Check it out! Unbalanced Single Wing from The Pistol Power Offense | FBCP S05 Episode 15

The Unbalanced Single Wing is a great offense. What if we could use the concepts and formation with our existing System? A few years ago I sat down in a Glazier Clinic that Rick Darlington was presenting. Coach Darlington is a Single Wing guru from Florida and an incredibly entertaining speaker. I was just there to learn something I didn't know and be entertained. What I got was a lot more than that. It sparked a few ideas. I realized that the plays being run in the base package (which does NOT involve any 'Spinner' plays) were straight out of our Pistol Power Offense System. Not long after that, I was adapting the Unbalanced Single Wing formation to the Pistol Power Offense System. That became the centerpiece of our very successful short yardage and 2-point conversion package. In this episode of The Football Coaching Podcast, I'm sharing how that System was created with you. Plus you can download the Unbalanced Single Wing in the Pistol Power Offense play sheet up by entering your email up above here. Using Pre-Practice in Your Practice Plans | FBCP S05 Episode 14

Pre-Practice periods can be extremely valuable in your football practice plans. But you need to use them right. Pre-practice has been a huge difference maker for practice planning, but it only works when you use it right. That means educating yourself, the rest of the coaching staff and your players on the purpose and execution of the pre-practice periods. This is a great place to get extra work. To steal practice time, without wearing down your players. Non-contact drills, reviewing and reinforcing foundational football skills. Check out this episode of The Football Coaching Podcast to learn all about how you can use Pre-Practice to make your football team better this season. Group Football Drills for Low Numbers| FBCP S05 Episode 13

Group Football Drills can target a specific area and clean out all of the noise around it. Plus you don't need as many players. This episode was planned for several weeks into the future, but it needed to be moved up. These group football drills can do wonders for a lot more teams than even I knew. Recently I asked coaches to tell me what is biggest problem their team was facing right now. No surprise, but a huge percentage of those responses revolved around needing more players. And wondering how to get a good practice with their small numbers. These group drills can benefit any team. During the podcast I talk about how I've used the drills on a team with over 150 players in the program. But they're also a critical part of coaching in a small school where 11 on 11 team is not always an option. Why I Took the Hands Out of Blocking Run Plays | FBCP S05 Episode 04

It's a slight technique change for blocking run plays. But it worked. Here's the How and Why on the shift to shoulder blocking. A few years ago, I came to the realization that something had to change in the way we teach blocking run plays on our Offensive Line. We needed to take out the weak link. Those adjustments had huge benefits. We've got to a shoulder blocking style - but not exactly like old Wing-T Offense or Veer Option blocking you might have seen. This isn't revolutionary. But a lot of coaches have asked about the adjustment to our run play blocking. So here it is! 11 Mistakes in the GMC 3-5-3 Defense | FBCP S05 Episode 01

Georgia Military College popularized the 3-5-3 Defense for the High School level 15 years ago. What's changed? 15 years ago, Georgia Military College came out with a comprehensive video series on the 3-5-3 Defense. It was all the rage back in 2005, with tons of coaches buying them up. I was one of those coaches. We installed the defense in 2006 and I took over as Defensive Coordinator in 2007. By 2008, we had moved on. This time it was the Miami 4-3 Defense. That changed my coaching life forever. With a little more knowledge and wisdom, it's time to go back and look at the original concepts and videos on the 3-5-3 Defense. What's changed? And why didn't we stick with it? Oklahoma 5-2 Defense Playbook from 1985 | FBCP S04 Episode 13

I'm hearing more and more of it. So it makes sense to go back in time and look toward the origins of the 3-4 Defense. That means we get to break down a playbook! I found the perfect one with an aggressive defensive scheme from the 1985 Oklahoma Sooners. This 5-2 Defense has a great look at multiple fronts from the 3-4 Defense (or 5-2 Defense) and a coverage package that will fit right in for today's game. There's some adjustments to be made. But it's great to see how the defense fits perfectly with the Umbrella Principle and mirrors so much of what we do in the 3-4 Defense System.

3-4 Defense Blitz Package (Basics) | FBCP S04 Episode 12

This is the basic blitz package for the 3-4 Defense as we teach it in the 3-4 Defense System that's a part of JDFB Insider. First we'll talk about the blitz package in the 3-4 Defense System and how the front, stunt, blitz and coverage all have to work together. This is going to be different depending on if you're a 2-gap or 1-gap odd front. Then we'll look at those base blitzes, and why you might want to use them. And most coaches in the 3-4 Defense System want to use them on every down. Finally we'll talk about blitz technique considerations. Disguising blitzes with no show, show it and bluff looks. Blitzing on run downs vs pass downs, and training the eyes of your linebackers to read out of blitzes when necessary. There's no reason to blitz a gap if they're not running there.

1985 Houston Gamblers Run & Shoot Playbook | FBCP S04 Episode 10

The Run and Shoot Offense set records in the USFL in 1984. Let's see what we can learn from what they learned in 1985! A few weeks ago I started looking at the Run and Shoot Offense. With the assistance of Jason Hahnstadt's Demistifying the Run and Shoot Offense video series, I came up with a base understanding of the offense. But I wanted to go deeper. Do I think the Run and Shoot Offense is the right direction for a High School Football team to go? Only if you have a background and a guaranteed Quarterback pipeline. Do I think there are elements we can take from the offense? Absolutely. So I dug around through a few Run and Shoot Offense playbooks. Settled on the 1985 Houston Gamblers playbook with… wait what? Kevin Gilbride? No idea. That's who's on the front page. John Jenkins was the Offensive Coordinator after Mouse Davis had moved on to the new Denver Gold. Yes, this is the first time we've ever talked about the USFL in the history of The Football Coaching Podcast. Coincidence, with the AAF coming around this year? Yes. Completely. Anyway, here's the links to the playbook and some other useful links for Run and Shoot Offense enthusiasts… Show Links The 1985 Houston Gamblers playbook, and several other playbooks mentioned in this podcast can be found here (thanks to footballxos.com) Get the Demistifying the Run and Shoot video series at 25% Off, FBCP listener special My earlier podcast as I stumble through learning the Run and Shoot is Season 4, Episode 5 of The Football Coaching Podcast I mentioned our passing concepts in The Pistol Power Offense several times, but you can get a taste of the offense with a free video series on the Power series at http://pistolpoweroffense.com/podcast

Roll Cover 3 Coverage | FBCP S04 Episode 08

Give the same look to the Quarterback every snap using Roll Cover 3 coverage. Here's how to do it. The simplest way to disguise your coverage is to give the same look on every snap. One way to accomplish that is to align your safeties and corners across the field in a straight line - then adjust before (or after) the snap. On this episode of The Football Coaching Podcast, I'll go in detail on installing a Roll Cover 3 system into your defense.
