140: the eye story details

E

Talking about my eye story from red, inflamed eyes, finding a dry eye specialist, and autoimmune findings, + what I'm doing in the meantime. Hi friends! I hope you've having a wonderful day! I have a new podcast episode up with the full eye story details. I put the call out on IG for topic requests, and so many of you asked to hear more about what's been going on. I shared some in this post with the best products for dry eyes and MGD, but I'm breaking everything down in this podcast episode. Thank you so much for those of you who have checked in and have been so caring on this wild journey. *Friendly reminder that this is not medical advice; just sharing my experience. Here's what I talk about in this episode: - My eye saga, from red, inflamed eyes to figuring out what the heck was actually going on - Bloodwork and test results - Finding a dry eye specialist - What functional labs I've been doing - Why you aren't your diagnosis, and so much more. Just like with many medical situations in my life, I'm fusing more Western style treatments (like MiBoFlo) with functional and holistic options (lab testing, protocols). It doesn't have to be one or the other, and I'm grateful to have lots of options and for amazing care providers. Notes from the episode: - HigherDOSE Labor Day sale starts TODAY! If you've been wanting a sauna blanket, red light face mask, PEMF Go Mat, or neck enhancer, now is the chance. Check out everything here and use the code FITNESSISA20 for 20% off! I use multiple HigherDOSE products each week and the Go Mat and sauna blanket are two of my favorite things in the whole world. 132: Tongue posture and nasal breathing with Ashley Palin, The Tongue Therapist

Hi friends! How are you?? I have a new podcast episode up today with an important topic: nasal breathing and tongue posture. This is a world that I stumbled upon accidentally a couple of years ago, when I was wondering why tongue posture improves facial posture. I went down a rabbit hole and started to learn about how tongue posture impacts our facial development, why it's important to breathe through our nose, and how our tongue posture and breathing habits can affect so many systems in the body. This information is starting to become more well-known, and I'm so thankful for experts like Ashley Palin sharing their knowledge on this subject. I love following her Instagram and have learned a lot from her, so I was thrilled when she said she'd join me on the podcast. 132: Tongue posture and nasal breathing with Ashley Palin, The Tongue Therapist Here's what we talk about in today's episode: - Mouth breathing! Why should we pay attention to nasal breathing? Why is it important? - Ideal tongue posture - what does it look like? - Mouth taping. Should we do it? What about if we have a deviated septum? - Do you think it's worth getting deviated septums, tongue ties, and lip ties corrected as adults? - How do we model good tongue posture for our kids and do you think it's worth seeking out help when they're young? and so.much.more. Here's a bit more about Ashley: Ashley is a registered dental hygienist who, after discovering her own issues with mouth breathing and oral-ties, pivoted to become a myofunctional therapist and help others with the same issues. She's done additional trainings through The Buteyko Clinic, MyoMethod, Tongue-Tied Academy and more. She helps people to breathe, sleep, and feel better by correcting their oral function, tongue posture, and breathing habits. You can follow her on Instagram here and check out her website here (she also takes 1:1 virtual clients if you're looking for help!). 131: 5 things to support healthy weight loss (that have nothing to do with calories or macros)

Hi friends! I've got a new podcast episode up for ya. For today's post, I wanted to talk about a few weight loss strategies that have nothing to do with calories or macros. I think it's so common to hear, "calories in vs. calories out" but there are so many other strategies and things to consider that can impact our goals. Disclaimer: this is not medical advice and not intended to treat, prevent, cure, or diagnose any medical conditions. Talk to a doctor or your practitioner for individual concerns. Also, this is my friendly personal trainer reminder to NOT focus on weight as much as body composition. Focus on the variables you can't SEE: how do you feel? Is your schedule realistic for you? Is this something you can maintain? What's your performance and energy like? Immune system function? Hormone function? These are all indicators of a happy body that a scale is unable to measure. 131: 5 things to support healthy weight loss (that have nothing to do with calories or macros) Here's what I talk about in this episode: - Why the topic of weight loss can be taboo, finding your body's set point, and why body composition is more important than weight - 5 things to support your healthy weight loss goals (and health in general) - How to set up your plate - Adding more daily steps - How alcohol affects weight loss (or weight loss resistance) and so much more! 128: my experience with breast thermography

I have a new podcast episode up sharing my experience with breast thermography. It's something I did recently as another way to track and see what's going on with inflammation in my body. I'm excited to share the process and my results with you, and some changes I made in my routine that have made a huge difference. Breast thermography is not intended to be a standalone test, but something you can do in conjunction with traditional screening measures, like self exams, mammography, ultrasounds, and MRI. I would absolutely follow the discretion of your doctor based on your unique body and family history. For more details, including pictures of my scans, check out my blog post. Some more resources to check out: This article has a lot of helpful info about thermography. Check out Nutrisense here and use the code TFP for $30 off and 1 month of free dietitian support! 109: Fertility Awareness Method and getting off birth control with Jess Suchan and Candace Burch

Hi friends! I'm so excited for today's podcast episode because it's a topic that's near and dear to my heart: Fertility Awareness Method! I've been practicing FAM since the old days, when I first got off birth control in 2009. It changed my life. It was the first chance I had to understand my cycle and how it changes throughout the month and gave me key insights into my fertile and non-fertile days. It's a non-hormonal form of birth control that can be very effective, especially if you're diligent about tracking your symptoms throughout the month. It can also tell you if something is off, like if your cycle starts to change lengths drastically, or if you're not ovulating. In today's podcast episode, I'm chatting with Jess Suchan and Candace Burch (an incredible mother-daughter duo! Candace's daughter Ryan also works on the family business) all about birth control and Fertility Awareness Method. 109: Fertility Awareness Method and getting off birth control with Jess Suchan and Candace Burch Here's what we discuss: - Why hormonal birth control can be problematic - What is FAM and how does it work? - Tracking apps and how to track throughout the month - Hormone balancing tips - and so.much.more. It's also worth mentioning here that birth control is a super personal topic and at the end of the day, you have to research and do what makes sense for your body and life. This podcast episode is not meant to convince anyone; we're just sharing our experiences. You gotta do what works for you, boo. Also, friendly reminder that this is not medical advice and just intended for informational purposes. You can also check out my previous podcast episode with Candace Burch here! Here's a little bit more about Candace and Jess and their backgrounds: Jess Suchan is a board certified Holistic Health Coach who coaches her clients towards finding a life of bliss, free from fad diets, overexercising, and burnout. She believes that in order to change our habits we must address the "holistic picture" and compassionately investigate how all areas of our lives are interconnected. Jess spent over a decade yo-yo dieting, exercising for punishment and ignoring the messages her body was sending her. This lifestyle coupled with a slew of stressful jobs, led her to develop debilitating migraines which she eventually cured with a holistic approach. When she discovered the power of food and lifestyle as medicine, she decided to become a health coach via the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and dedicated her time to helping others find that "2.0 version of themselves!" Today, she coaches clients privately and works in partnership with Your Hormone Balance (she also recently completed a Hormone Health Extension course through I.I.N.). She is also the creator of the Sexy Sugar Cleanse and Sexy Swaps & Recipe Guide and in the Spring of 2021, she launched a line of superfood latte blends for detoxification & energy -a great hormone balancing swap for black coffee! Candace Burch is a Hormone Health Educator with a Masters in Health Education and over 25 years of experience in the field. In 2017, she founded Your Hormone Balance as a one-on-one consulting practice, and is now joined by her two daughters, Ryan and Jess, who have expanded YHB's reach to women around the world (keep reading for the full story behind this family biz!). Candace's background includes working as a health editor, writer and investigative journalist in London, leading educational patient and provider initiatives for ZRT Hormone Laboratory (as their Director of Education for 12+ years), as well as spearheading "Body in Balance," a hormone testing and rebalancing weight loss program at Metabolic Research Center (a nationwide weight loss company). Candace continues to raise awareness about hormonal health and disease prevention through her work as a writer, speaker and podcaster (Listen to Candace and her cohost, Kyle McAvoy, NP, on the Women Talking Frankly Podcast). Today she lives in McMinnville, Oregon with her husband and son/schnoodle, Riley. Outside of hormone health, her passions include sketching, reading, dancing, music, long walks, swimming, international travel, quality time spent with loved ones, and making sure that every day is filled with purpose, love and zest for living!
