Story Time 5, with Jason Gillespie encore
EThis interview with Jason Gillespie, recorded on the Adelaide Oval boundary edge at the day after the Ashes Test in 2017, was a turning point for show. Until then, we would talk to the occasional guest but only ever briefly. Because this conversation coincided with a rain delay, and Dizzy didn’t fancy helping with the covers in the game where he was playing in, we kept the tape running. It was well worth it, touching on topics that normally wouldn’t have otherwise made the show. It was really well received at the time, so we made it the model for The Final Word ever since. Enjoy. Your Nerd Pledge numbers are: 7.08 - Jeremy Brown 11.96 - Elia Andrews 1.68 - Andrew Turner 3.03 - James Scambler. 3.77 - Laksmi Govindasamy Guess away. Our answers are in the episode. There are numbers though, and reality checks. On things that matter, we bring back our old friend Bharat Sundaresan to give us the detail on what the world’s problems will mean for India, the IPL and the BCCI. S8 Ep 5Big Trouble in Little Cricket Australia
ESeason 8, Ep 5: You thought cricket was safe in the south? Think again. CA is shutting down operations to avoid running out of cash. Questions and accusations abound. Are they broke yet? Will they stiff the players? Did they lose it all playing the stock market? We talk to newshound Peter Lalor to separate fact from misunderstanding. Also: which of the Mighty Ducks actually deserved to play for Team USA? Will Glenn Maxwell captain Australia A in an unofficial Test against Steve Smith and company? Will the IPL take over the spot if the T20 World Cup leaves a vacancy? When can we watch a cricket match in Amsterdam? For an episode recorded on 4/20, we need to know. S8 Ep 4The sun of England's empty spring
ESeason 8, Ep 4. With no cricket on, everyone in England watched replays of the Headingley Test over the weekend, so we look back at that day in our lives as well. Nathan Lyon has had to cancel a deal at Hampshire, and likes the idea of playing Virat Kohli in empty stadiums. Also this week, we talk to journalist Will Macpherson about how the current situation will hit English counties and the international season, and all countries in the Test Championship. Winnie has started smiling. Yuvraj Singh is trying to do the same. The Nerd Pledge numbers are flowing in, and we do our best to answer them. Also this week, the STATMAN segment is back. Story Time 1, with Harsha Bhogle encore
India's voice of cricket has a long relationship with Australia too, part of ABC radio since 1991. None of this happened by accident: Harsha Bhogle was the classic freelance pioneer, and still has the same attitude. For The Final Word 2018 Christmas special, Harsha settled down for a long chat with Adam and Geoff about the hustle and grind, the need to improvise, and the story of how he turned it into an extraordinary life. This is the encore repeat of that interview. This is also the start of what eventually morphed into Story Time, our weekend show where we used Nerd Pledge numbers to journey through cricket history. For 157 years the Wisden Almanack has been recording all things cricket, and the latest edition of the biggest small book in the game is out this week. As last year, we talk through the contents with editor Lawrence Booth. Also on the show this week: Steve O’Keefe has to hang up his glowsticks as New South Wales give him a premature move-along. Dean Jones cracks the shits with Victoria. Bruce Dawe departs this world. NRL Island might be a goer. Plenty of Nerd Pledge, and our new segment Happy Birthday Sachin. S8 Ep 2The Final Word with Nasser Hussain
ESeason 8, Episode 2: Nasser Hussain. He’s known for Karachi in the dark, for the toss at Brisbane, for Hansie’s leather jacket, so we talked about none of these things. For over an hour we sat down and talked about everything else: about the boy who played in India’s Chepauk stadium but went on to captain England, about the teenage leg-spinner who was forced to change arts, about the young hothead who became a shrewd tactician. About rebuilding a broken side, building a team that went on to great things, then becoming one of the most respected commentators in the game. Nasser was as forthright and thoughtful as you might expect if you’ve seen him interview anyone else. Listen through for a memorable Final Word. S8 Ep 1Sunrise in Lockdown
ESeason 8, Ep 1: That’s right, it’s time for a new Final Word season. A season in which very little cricket may be played, but much cricket will be played in our hearts. A season in which the real cricket will be the friends we make along the way. Thanks so much to everyone who has joined in to support the show in the last week. We’ll keep doing it. One of the best pastimes in isolation has been watching the new documentary series The Test, a view from within the Australian men’s team in the 18 months after the sandpaper affair. Series director Adrian Brown joins Adam to tell how the show came to exist. Also, have you ever wondered what someone sounds like trying to talk beneath a layer of custard? Geoff can demonstrate. Adam is in full UK lockdown. Daniel Norcross is reworking the dystopian alternate ending to World War II. Winnie is extremely vocal. Cat Cricket is sweeping the internet. Sachin Tendulkar has some birthday wishes. Shane Warne owns a gin company. The people cry in one voice for the 2005 Ashes. The man behind Robelinda2 emerges as the people’s champion. There’s Nerd Pledge, letters, and more. Our Nerd Pledge numbers for this week are: 2.03 (from James Moosh) 3.69 (from Jake Garlick 2.21 (from Andrew Gilbertson) 3.29 (from Dane Hansted) Guess away. ESeason 7, Ep 24. With COVID-19 stopping the world of sport, Dr Peter Brukner is who you want to hear from: having been the doctor for Australia’s cricket and football teams, Olympic athletics and swimming squads, AFL and Premier League clubs. The doc joins The Final Word to give us the answers, and to tell us when those answers don’t exist. Season 7, Ep 24: We’d also like you all to know that we’ll keep podcasting weekly throughout the long shutdown. We’ve got a million ideas even without any cricket being played, and we’d like to be a source of company and comfort for those that want it. Our Nerd Pledge numbers for this week are: 2.68 (from Paul Richards) 2.75 (from Tim Unwin) 2.94 (from Darren Smith) Guess away. Our answers are in the episode. S7 Ep 23The day we got 86,000 at the MCG
ESeason 7, Ep 23: World Cup finals do have that special sauce. A few years ago you could barely have assembled a dodgeball game out of the attendance at most women's international matches. This time they aimed to fill the MCG, and pretty well did. Alyssa Healy provided the fireworks, Katy Perry provided Firework. It was a night of joy. Geoff and Adam have covered a lot of those less celebrated games over the years, so they won't pretend to be impartial about how well this one went. This week, a brief word with World Cup winners Beth Mooney and Megan Schutt. An epic new spot of Stat Man with a tale that defies belief. Daniel Norcross broadcasting his WWII update from occupied France. A new round of Nerd Pledge. The Lightning Round from around the world. And your favourite satellite phone providers are back. Thanks to Henry Moeran for the cover artwork, titled: match report + Hot & Cold in concert. This is the Final Word. S7 Ep 22Finals time or rain time?
ESeason 7, Ep 22: The T20 World Cup pool (party) stage is done, and the usual suspects are through to the semi-finals. But the last two pool matches in Sydney have been rained out, and the semi-finals might be too. Geoff and Adam run the ruler over the Cup so far, the teams that have made it to the knockouts, and those who missed out. Also this week: Dan Norcross sends a double WWII update, Sunny Munn has been sighted in Fitzroy, Nerd Pledge gets deep into 1911, we have Winnie baby updates, Shashikala Siriwardene has retired after an epic Sri Lanka career, the CBUS Super Performer gets picked, India got thrashed in New Zealand, and the Shield had a crazy round of last-day finishes. S7 Ep 21The Final Word with the Thailand cricket team
Season 7, Ep 21: It's Thai time! And the first bilingual Final Word. People have wondered how Thailand made it to the World Cup, and we've got the full story in English and in Thai, with three of the women who have been on the journey for over a decade, and the man who designed the program from day one. Sornnarin Tippoch, Nattakan Chantam and Naruemol Chaiwai are three of Thailand's longest-serving players. Shan Khader is the team manager and translator, and Harshal Pathak has been their coach since 2018. Also this week, our broader tournament chat, Nerd Pledge, Lightning Round, the new Super Performer segment, Glenn Maxwell's engagement ring, backback bribery, and some other things we've forgotten. S7 Ep 20ADAM HAS A BABY NOW
ESeason 7, Ep 20: Pardon the Caps Lock, but it's worth it. We've all been waiting for a long time, and now Winifred Mae Collins is with us thanks to some stellar work from Rachel. If you've ever wanted to hear a person newly suffused with the joy of parenthood be questioned by someone who is definitely not that, then your two hosts can supply your needs. Also this week, the Women's T20 World Cup is about to start, so we got the most excellent Lisa Sthalekar on for a chat about its history and what might happen this time around. Plus the segments you (possibly) love: The Daniel Norcross World War II update, Nerd Pledge, the Lightning Round, and whatever else we squeezed in. Babies! S7 Ep 19The AB Medal goes to... La La Land
ESeason 7, Ep 19: The Allan Border Medal really made some people mad this week, as David Warner snaffled it by one vote from Steve Smith. More cheerfully – they're from Tigerland. The mighty Bangladesh Tigers have won the kiddy World Cup, and we've got Bangladexpert correspondent Mohammad Isam on the phone from a Dhaka freeway to tell us what it means. There's also Naseem Shah's hat-trick, a WWII update from Dan Norcross, some Nerd Pledge and correspondence, and Geoff's new segment: THE STATMAN. Bee-up-bop bada bop, bup bup bada bop. S7 Ep 18The Final Word with Ebony Rainford-Brent
ESeason 7, Ep 18: Ebony could have played a dozen sports. Cricket got her by chance. Now she's a popular commentator on Test Match Special, on the Surrey board, and is championing opportunities for black English kids in the game. She sits down with the Final Word for one of the most open and meaningful conversations we've had. Also this week: a Vinoo Mankad Appreciation Ten Minutes (bless the Under-19 World Cup), some more Nerd Pledge, and a whip around the cricket world from Pakistan to Zimbabwe to South Africa, with monkey attacks, Test tons, and the women's tri-series, as well as the Australian men's selections for the white-ball team. S7 Ep 17South Africa's sudden slide
ESeason 7, Ep 17: Less than two years ago South Africa crushed Australia 3-1. Since then they've had a dire World Cup and consistent Test losses, while the national administration has fallen into chaos. With England having just polished off a series 1-3 in Johannesburg, the show this week features Neil Manthorp to explain the situation in the Rainbow Nation. Also Geoff is back from holiday, Daniel Norcross has sent notes on our progress through World War II, and there's Nerd Pledge and the early rumblings of the approaching Women's T20 World Cup. ESeason 7, Ep 14: After hammering New Zealand one final time, the pause button is hit on the home international summer. But that doesn't mean the cricket world slows down: a magnificent finish at Newlands was perfectly timed as the debate surrounding four-day Tests heats up. ESeason 7, Ep 13: You know what New Year's Eve means on The Final Word? It's time for our biggest show of the year. We have our Best and Worst of 2019. Our highlights and lowlights, and some of our best memories. An Adam Baby Update. Some more Nerd Pledge. Several arguments. One apology. A farewell to Peter Siddle. The Boxing Day Test, and the other Boxing Day Test (in Melbourne and in Johannesburg). Our hard-fought WBBL All Time Team picked from the first five years of the comp. And given the week's discussion over the future of the Boxing Day Test, an interview with Paul Sinclair from the Australian Conservation Foundation. There's a lot here. Laughter. Tears. Singing. S7 Ep 12The Final Word Christmas with Mel Jones
ESeason 7, Ep 12: It's Christmas Eve, and like last year with Harsha Bhogle, we decided to settle down around the fire (of Australia's merciless record-breaking sun) for a long chat with someone good at long chats. Mel Jones won World Cups and made an Ashes ton on debut, but has had an even more distinguished career in cricket after her playing days. In demand as a commentator and mentor worldwide, she has just joined the board of Cricket Australia to try to be a voice for good. A lot of fun and a lot of insight in this conversation. The Final Word this week covers Warner's triple, Root's captaincy, New Zealand's likelihood of choking in Australia, the WBBL late-season frenzy, our Adelaide live show, and and whatever else we stumbled upon on the way. Season 7, Ep 7: The Australian Test squad is announced, and we have all the wash-up from that announcement and the week in cricket, plus Adam's adventures with lime milk in Tasmania and the time Geoff crashed their car. Then: when you have the same name as your subject, it must make empathy easy. During Robin Smith's career the England batsman was famed for his bravery against fast bowling. After it, he found himself on the verge of jumping off a building. Rob Smyth has helped write Smith's story, and is our Final Word guest this episode. What else happened this week? Pakistan crashed and burned against Australia in the T20s. Board appointments at Cricket Australia. S7 Ep 4Cricket and climate change, with Tanya Aldred
Season 7, Ep 4: As climate strikes increase around the world and the effects of climate change bite more deeply, cricket as a sport is yet to address the issue. But cricket is one of the most vulnerable sports in the face of droughts and storms and rising sea levels, and countries like Australia, South Africa, and those in the subcontinent and Caribbean will be some of the worst affected. Tanya Aldred, founder of the Next Test, joins the Final Word to talk about cricket's contribution to the problem and its response to the crisis. S7 Ep 3Policy Week is like Book Week without costumes
Season 7, Ep 3: You know nothing gets the Final Word excited like policy. That's not even sarcasm. Cricket has had a big policy week: England announced a women's cricket plan worth £50million, Australia announced a world-best parental leave program, and there's the disparity between the men's and women's sides of The Hundred. We sat down with lawyer and cricketer Isabelle Westbury to thrash out the details.
