September 21, 2023: Although basketball is a distant second in terms of importance to Michigan fans, there is still a good tradition of winning. However, Juwan Howard and the Wolverines seem to be slowly spiraling the drain. They enter the 2023-24 season after what can only be described as a disappointing season where they not only missed the NCAA tournament but lost in the NIT first round in a heart crushing fashion to Vanderbilt. The program feels like it is lost with strange roster construction and an inability to recruit to the level hoped for when Howard was hired. The Wolverines have struggled to recruit a point guard they trust going to the portal year after year. Worse yet, the team that never could get over the hump last year will enter this season without two first round NBA draft picks (Jett Howard and Coby Bufkin) and the consensus number one transfer portal player, Hunter Dickinson. It's hard to envision that this team is going anywhere in the near future except on a slow circling of the drain. September 18, 2023: Rutgers has quietly become a serious pest and threat to teams in the Big Ten. After spending years as the league doormat, the Scarlet Knights are not only a legitimate challenge each night but have become somewhat of a regular in the NCAA tournament. Steve Pikiell has done a masterful job in creating a real program at a university with virtually no basketball tradition. However, last year was bit of a weird year for the Knights as they looked assured to make the field of 68 when all of a sudden, the wheels came off as they dropped 6 of their last eight games. Worse yet, one of those was to Minnesota who had a KenPom profile of a middling team in the SWAC. Next year, Rutgers is poised to potentially get 2 of the top 5 high school recruits in the nation. This year, it might really struggle to recover and make it back into the NCAAs. The departures of Cam Spencer and Paul Mulcahy really put Pikiell and his team in a tough spot. September 14, 2023: Although Purdue and its steamrolling through the Big Ten last year was the main headline - Northwestern may have had an even better season (at least compared to expectations). Chris Collins' crew found 'it' last year and rocketed up to the top of the conference mainly through a tenacious defense. Collins was perhaps a little bit on the hot seat, but after a second NCAA tournament berth (the second ever in the history of Northwestern) and a first round win, we expect he's safe in Evanston for a while. However, Chase Audige elected to go pro instead of take his COVID year leaving a lot of questions still for the 'Cats heading into the year. Northwestern has added some pieces from transfers but like the other teams we have discussed to this point, we will just have to wait and see how they pan out. September 11, 2023: Fred Hoiberg and the Cornhuskers had a moderately successful season last year. They nearly finished .500 in league play and went 6-2 down the home stretch largely behind the emergence of Keisei Tominaga and his infectious personality and deadliness from behind the arc. Last year, Nebraska was finally not awful on the defensive end of the ball or on the boards. The question coming into this year is an obvious one: was the end of last year a fluke or will it be a foundation for new success going forward? Certainly, if Keisei Tominaga can have a repeat of the shooting performance he put on last year this Nebraska team will at a minimum be a threat to knock you off if you're off your game. But just like the other two previews we've done so far, this team's success will depend in large part on whether the midmajor transfers can deliver. The ones the 'huskers are depending on are Rienk Mast from Bradley and Brice Williams from Charlotte. Whether a successful season is a necessity for Fred Hoiberg to avoid the hot seat in Lincoln is unclear. September 10, 2023: Well, MSU fans who went to bed Saturday night feeling pretty good about their football team awoke Sunday to some very sobering news. It turns out that Head coach Mel Tucker, is the subject of a serious Title IX investigation alleging sexual misconduct with a former off campus individual. His coaching future with Michigan State is probably over as we await the next steps within the program and athletic department. However, whenever anything happens within athletics at MSU, it seems Tom Izzo becomes a part of the discussion. Partly because there is such a huge power vacuum at the university and partly because he cares so deeply from the school. September 7, 2023: In perhaps the most surprising season in the Big Ten (outside of Purdue winning and then face planting in the NCAA tourney), the Penn State Nittany Lions did what few thought possible. Micah Shrewsberry cobbled together a team of veterans, grad transfers, and portal additions without any size and managed to get a .500 record and NCAA tourney berth. Not only did PSU make the NCAA and win a game, they almost knocked out a really tough Texas team to make the Sweet 16. However, the most shocking thing about the Lions was that they have to be the most unconventional Big Ten team in recent memory usually playing 5 guards and no one over 6' 5". Despite the size limitations on the team, Penn State managed to be competitive and just pesky enough to defeat a lot of teams who looked much better than them on paper. But then forces that were working in the background (or not working) as Penn State's successful coach - a real diamond in the rough for this sorry basketball program - and let him slip away. Clearly, the administration at Penn State never saw the real value in Shrewberry (and basketball in general) and were way too late in providing any overtures to keep him from leaving Happy Valley. So now Shrewsberry is at Notre Dame and Penn State's roster has been reduced to rubble. They only have 3 remaining players on the roster - none of whom played much last year - and ten new bodies as the new coach, Mike Rhodes, tries to bring his success in the A-10 at VCU to the Big Ten. September 4, 2023: Head coach Ben Johnson and the Minnesota Gophers are coming off of a statistically historically poor season. Out of 351 division-1 teams, the Gophers rated 235 in KenPom which was easily the worst in Big Ten. This is following a relatively successful year for a team that was cobbled together by Johnson with mostly transfers. Unfortunately for the Gophers, their weak roster was plagued by injuries to their star players - Dawson Garcia and Jameson Battle. The mild magic that occurred the year before (although Minnesota still didn't win a lot of conference games) was now gone and they only managed two wins in the league. Toughest yet is that Johnson and the Gophers continue to struggle to keep Minnesota talent from escaping the state and heading to other programs. Michigan State got Tre Holloman, Duke got Paulo Banchero, and the list goes on. So this year Minnesota is again faced with a challenging roster that has some unknown potential. September 1, 2023: MSU finally released it's non conference schedule and it has a few surprises. First, there is no true road game which is very unusual for Tom Izzo. He usually likes to challenge his team at least once in a hostile environment before the Big Ten season really gets under way. Second, the schedule is much more manageable this year without games sandwiched between crazy travel schedules. Unlike last year where MSU logged thousands of miles in the air and moved multiple time zones before playing at Notre Dame, this year doesn't look to have any of those difficulties. Finally, 1979 national champion opponent, the Indiana State Sycamores, visit the Breslin in their first matchup since the title game over 40 years ago. It will certainly be an interesting matchup and one that is sure to get a lot of media attention. August 23, 2023: Tom Izzo and Spartans are already off to a great start in solidifying their next class of high school recruits for the 2024 class. They have already received commitments from talented 6'5" dead eye shooting Kur Teng and 6'11" big man Jesse McCulloch who we would assume makes up half of the planned class for 2024. To round out the class, MSU is seriously working on landing 6'3" combo guard Jase Richardson (son of Spartan and NBA great, Jason Richardson), 6'6" phenom guard Bryson Tucker, and 6'11" Aidan Sherrell. It looks like Michigan State is seriously in the running for the first two with a good chance at securing one if not both. As for 2025, MSU has a whole lot of targets they have shown interest in, made offers, and begun official and unofficial visits to campus. August 16, 2023: 6' 2" sophomore point guard Tre Holloman had a very solid freshman year playing nearly 9 minutes a game as a backup to AJ Hoggard. He was solid defensively and good protecting the ball with nearly a 2.5:1 assist to turnover ratio. Not relied upon to score last year, almost certainly we can expect to see him contribute more on the offensive side of the ball this year. Tre has been working on his shot and handle over the off season and those who went to Moneyball saw his improved confidence and three point shot. With the addition of Jeremy Fears as a another point guard there is a good chance that we will see Tre playing backup as both a one and two. August 9, 2023: 6'5" freshman wing Gehrig Normand joins us again to discuss his first impressions at Michigan State. Our sit down went down a number of avenues from what he thinks of East Lansing (in the summer), Moneyball, his freshmen teammates, and coach Izzo. When we asked him what he thought of the yelling from Izzo and the staff he simply shrugged it off and said it showed they actually care. August 7, 2023: The Big Ten was at it again last week as it continues to metastasize across America. After poaching UCLA and USC last year, the Big Ten added Oregon and Washington to its prizes. With 18 member schools spanning both coasts, the Big Ten is changing the nature of its athletic competition and even scheduling the regular season - not to mention the postseason - will be complicated. Any semblance of a regular season champion will probably have to be dispelled once the additional 4 teams join play. July 26, 2023: Lansing's annual pro-am basketball tournament that features Michigan State's roster, Moneyball, is happening again this year. This year's free to the public event at Holt High School allows for all Spartan fans an opportunity to get an early glimpse of the incoming freshmen and a peek at how last year's players are progressing. As always, defense is optional at Moneyball so there's only so much that you can take away from the tournament. Many remember the summer that Tum Tum Nairn torched the nets from 3 only to struggle to score the following year during the regular season. So evaluations are best taken with a big grain of salt. However, there are things that can be discerned from what we see. We can evaluate the body conditioning of players, their ability to shoot (when wide open), athleticism, and their health. Oh, and can they dunk? On all those counts, MSU looks ready for next year and returning veterans will be joined by some very talented Freshmen including two McDonald's All-Americans, freak athlete Coen Carr, and sharpshooter Gehrig Normand. The last two put on a show with Normand hitting 3s and Carr putting down unbelievable dunk after unbelievable dunk. It's only Moneyball but the future certainly looks bright for this squad. July 19, 2023: Famous MSU walk-on to starter, Tim Bograkos joined us to talk about what it was like playing for Coach Izzo back in the early 2000s. Tim became such an iconic player in Izzo's early career that the annual walk-on honor for MSU is named the Bograkos award. Bograkos is probably most famous for hitting the game winning 3 point shot against Kentucky in Rupp Arena where Izzo quipped he was "the sixth option on the floor" at the time. Jun 19, 2023: Mady Sissoko joined us again on the show and this time to discuss all that he has accomplished on and off the court since our last time visiting back in February. Not only did MSU make the Sweet 16, but Mady's charitable organization, the Mady Sissoko Foundation (https://www.madysissokofoundation.org) managed to build a school, medical clinic, and install a new well in his home town in Mali. Now, instead of walking 90 minutes each way to get to school, the kids in his village can get an education without having to sacrifice helping their families in farming. May 31, 2023: On the cusp of the deadline to withdraw from the NBA draft and maintain your eligibility, MSU guards Jaden Akins and AJ Hoggard both announced they will return for the 2023-24 MSU Spartans season. Their return brings a lot of experience, talent, production, and potential upside assuming Akins plays the entire year without injury. Coupling their return with Hall and Walker taking their COVID years and a top 6 recruiting class, and Michigan State is set for very successful year. The biggest questions with the return of the two players is how are the minutes going to get delegated? We are unlikely to see 35+ minutes from any of the starters as we did last year. Also, it seems to go without mention that it should look like a more typical MSU team with a faster pace and a reemphasis towards running and rebounding. April 27, 2023: Unsurprisingly, Jaden Akins declared his intention to enter the NBA draft for evaluation while maintaining his college eligibility. After Akin (probably) didn't enter the transfer portal, it was expected by most that he would look to see what his draft prospects were in the NBA. Also, Tom Izzo mentioned at a press conference a few weeks ago that he wouldn't be surprised either if Akins and Hoggard chose this path for evaluation by pro scouts. Hoggard's entrance into the evaluation process involved much less fan fare as he didn't even post about it until the list came out two days later. After the discovery by the media, Hoggard posted on social media his intentions of entering the evaluation for the draft but few expect that he will be projected as a first or second round draft pick and will almost certainly return to MSU for his senior season. Rod also discussed in the episode his impressions on the opening of the 2023 AAU season and who MSU seems to be targeting for 2024 and 2025 high school recruits. April 20, 2023: As had been rumored for weeks now, 6'9" 4 star power forward, Jesse McCulloch, from Cleveland, OH committed to MSU as their second 2024 recruit. McCulloch joins Kur Teng who committed to MSU a few weeks ago to add a second top 100 recruit to what looks to be another good high school recruiting class. McCulloch's game is one where they expect him to play on the post but also stretch the floor. He needs to add some strength to compete in the Big Ten but he has an entire summer and senior year in high school to work on his body. April 10, 2023: In a move that has been telegraphed for a few months now, senior guard Tyson Walker has elected to return for his "COVID Senior" season and will complete his college career on the 2023-24 MSU Spartans. There has been speculation for a few weeks now especially that Tyson would play another season with Michigan State and that he will be joined by Malik Hall. Malik has not officially declared his intention to stay but every indication at the time of this recording was that he was going to return. Of note for Hall is that he had surgery on his foot, presumably to repair the stress reaction that plagued his the majority of last season and probably led to a dropoff in his outside shooting. Fortunately, surgery so early in the off season should give him plenty of time to return to game shape for the summer and prepare for his final season with MSU. April 7, 2023: Another Big Ten Men's basketball season is in the books and as we predicted before the season began, it would be a very difficult year to predict winners and losers. The parity in the league was unprecedented this year as places 4-10 were separated by only 2 games. Purdue was the surprising winner of the league and won it easily by three games. However, the season highlights the unpredictability that is probably accentuated by the addition of the new transfer rules and NIL. The continuity of teams and cohesion will be less going forward which will make consistency from year to year even harder for coaches and programs. This year is a good example of that as the Northwestern Wildcats finished second in large part due to a pair of senior guards who stuck it out in Evanston. April 4, 2023: Kur Teng is the first commitment for MSU's 2024 class. Hailing from New England, Teng is a 6' 4" wing best described as moderately very effective shooter who excels coming off screens as a catch and shoot guy. Other huge positives are his coachability and interest in being in a situation where the coaching staff pushes him. Teng is a consensus top 40 recruit and bodes well for another strong recruiting class for Tom Izzo and the Spartans. March 29, 2023: The 2022-23 MSU men's basketball season was a strange one in that it was marked by consistently inconsistent play. After a fast and very promising start against top rated Gonzaga, Kentucky, and Villanova, the injury bug hit MSU as Jaden Akins was shut down a second time (he had foot surgery before the start of the season) and Malik Hall suffered the same stress reaction injury in his foot which sidelined him for a number of weeks. MSU limped through the non-conference schedule with a loss to Alabama and wins over Oregon and Portland in the PK85 before getting destroyed in South Bend on what we can only assume were tired legs. Big Ten play did not start out well as Michigan State fell on their home opener to Northwestern who turned out to be a pretty good team. In what became one very impressive trait for the team, they bounced back and won a road game against Penn State as they showed the ability to repeatedly get off the mat whenever they got knocked down. Big Ten play resumed after a few easy home non-conference games with a decent start until Malik Hall reinjured his foot and was forced to miss some time again. By this time, Akins had recovered and was starting to play more but the Spartans were playing good defense but struggling to score. It wasn't until the end of the season before they got the offense humming just in time for the post season play. Unfortunately, they were unable to carry that over into the Big Ten Tournament where they continued playing the same leaky defense as at the end of the regular season leading to a loss in the opening round to Ohio State. Fortunately, MSU put it together and played their best basketball of the season in the NCAA tournament and as a 7 seed defeated a tough 10 seed USC Trojans. They beat USC and second round opponent, Marquette, despite their worst 3 point shooting performances of the year on the backs of good defense and attacking the rim. Then, in the Sweet 16 the Spartans fell in overtime to Kansas State in one of the most entertaining games of the tournament. Are you looking for Spartan gear? March 23, 2023: In what will be remembered for a long time for both schools, Michigan State fell to Kansas State in the Sweet 16 behind an historic performance by Wildcat point guard Markquis Nowell who finished the game with 20 points and 19 assists. His assist total was an NCAA tournament record` and provided the Wildcats with just enough to defeat the Spartans in an exciting back and forth game. MSU found its 3 point stroke which had been missing in the first two games of the tournament shooting 52% (13-25) but it just wasn't enough to overcome Nowell and his orchestration on offense. The Wildcats had 10 steals leading to a surprising 13-5 TO margin in Kansas St.'s advantage which effectively more than neutralized MSU's advantage on the offensive glass. Although the season ended short of the Final Four, a trip out of the first weekend into the Sweet 16 is definitely a good ending to a season that was a struggle with injuries and inconsistencies. Perhaps it will be a building block they can use for next year. Now we await decisions from a few players to see whether they will move on or return to the team for another season. March 21, 2023: Once again the Spartans find themselves on a little bit of a run in March. How far it goes is yet to be determined but their next obstacle are the Kansas State Wildcats. The Wildcats are the 3 seed and defeated Montana State and Kentucky to make their first trip to the second weekend since 2018 where they made it to the Elite 8 and lost to Loyola-Chicago. Kansas State, out of the tough Big 12, has made this run largely on the backs of its defense and two players: 5'8" PG Marquis Nowell and 6'6" Keyontae Johnson. The diminutive PG was spectacular against Kentucky and Johnson has been a steady three level threat at the 4 for the Wildcats all season. The main weakness of this team is defensive rebounding which MSU is well below average for a Tom Izzo team. The big questions for Michigan State is whether they will be able to find their range again from distance. Despite winning their first two tournament games, they have shot an abysmal 7-30 (23.3%) for 3 which is well below their season average. Obviously, they have to continue to play their best connected defense of the season but it is hard to imagine them continuing to advance without hitting their staple offensive juice from deep. March 19, 2023: Michigan State advances out of the second weekend of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2019 when they made their push to the Final Four. The Spartans defeated the Big East regular season champs, the Marquette Golden Eagles, 69-60 despite only making two three pointers on 16 attempts. MSU has been able to show off its famed versatility and ability to win games in a variety of ways already in this NCAA run. The game was tied at around the four minute mark before everyone on the team made winning plays to seal the deal. Walker hit shot after shot, Hoggard directed traffic and hit a wide open Hauser for his only three, Sissoko made two enormous blocks at the rim, and Malik Hall pulled down a huge offensive rebound with 1:30 minutes left. March 18, 2023: Michigan State advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament by defeating USC 72-62 March 17 and will face the #2 seed Marquette Golden Eagles from the Big East who advanced by beating Vermont. Marquette won the Big East and the Big East tournament and is a dangerous team led by head coach, Shaka Smart. Smart doesn't employ his 'Havoc' defense that made him famous in his days as VCU's head coach but they do play a high pressure half court attack. On offense, they are a versatile team that can shoot extremely well inside the arc and doesn't turn it over. However, they are an average 3 pt shooting team and a poor rebounding team on both ends. The question for MSU is which AJ shows up and if it's the great one like in the USC game, can they break that pressure and get some easy looks for threes and twos? March 17, 2023: Michigan State entered the 2023 NCAA tournament for the 25th year in a row and the second as a 7 seed. This year, MSU faced the USC Trojans and like last year, will head into the weekend with a chance to make the Sweet Sixteen. The Spartans headed to half time tied 34-34 but came out in the second half with a renewed focus on defense holding the Trojans to just 33%. Couple that with some good offensive execution and MSU ran away with the game winning comfortably by 10. March 15, 2023: Erik Qualman was a manager on MSU's basketball team in 1990 but ended his career on the team with a jersey. He played with Steve Smith and Shawn Respert and was involved in the NCAA tournament as both a manager and teammate. He tells us what it's like as a player on the team and what it was like with Jud Heathcote and Tom Izzo running the show in the Breslin Center. Qualman is best known as a 5 time best selling author and professional public speaker who has presented all over the world. His books have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, on 60 Minutes, and has been used in Universities and even NASA. A sitting professor at Northwestern University, he will be giving the commencement speech at MSU this May. March 14, 2023: Michigan State garnered a 7 seed in the East and will face the Pac-12 (soon to be Big Ten) USC Trojans in the First Round in Columbus, OH on Friday the 17th. Tom Izzo has a 1-0 record against the Trojans in the NCAA tournament a few years ago but that will not play much of a factor in this first round matchup. Basically, these teams are a little bit similar in that they have similar offensive and defensive efficiency metrics and were marred by season with inconsistency. But that level of inconsistency is probably typical of most teams who find themselves in the 7-10 seed lines. So the ultimate question to ask about this game is not the specifics of the teams as perhaps which teams decide to show up for the game. March 12,2023: Today was the NCAA bracket reveal day and MSU will be heading to its 25th straight NCAA tournament putting Tom Izzo as having the longest streak for a coach in NCAA history. The Spartans will play Friday as the 7 seed against 10 seed USC in the East Regional. 8 Big Ten teams made the field with Rutgers getting left out despite being in most brackets. March 10, 2023: Michigan State arrived in Chicago for the Big Ten Tournament after securing a double bye and got to face 13 seed Ohio State coming off two straight days of games. Despite the lack of rest and being down Freshman phenom, Brice Sensabaugh to injury, the Buckeyes handled the Spartans quite easily Friday afternoon. This was a game where MSU didn't do much well; poor defense, horrific shooting, weak rebounding, and getting beaten to most loose balls. The only silver lining of today's performance is that they have at least one more game to play as they await their matchup for the first round of the NCAA tournament where we suspect they will either be a high 8 or low 7 seed. We can only hope that the locked in and focused AJ Hoggard that we had seen down the stretch of the regular season returns for the NCAAs and that MSU can shore up its once solid defense. March 9, 2023: It's March which means the postseason is here and it is one-and-done time. MSU plays its first game in the Big Ten Tournament in the quarterfinals with a 4-13 matchup against Ohio State. The winner of the game will play the winner of the 1-9 game between Purdue and Rutgers. In a scenario similar to last year's tournament, the Spartans will open up play against their last opponent who they defeated on senior day only 6 days ago in East Lansing. Ohio State will be playing their third game in as many days while MSU will just be getting started in Chicago. March 7, 2023: In what is shaping up to be the most unpredictable Big Ten Tournament in history, Michigan State enters as the fourth seed after securing an improbable double bye. Only through a series of fortunate results that almost all broke MSU's way on Sunday, the Spartans will be able to wait until Friday to take on either the 5 seed Iowa Hawkeyes or 12 Wisconsin/13 Ohio State. This year has seen some of the most parity ever in that 5 teams tied for fifth place and 12 of the teams are either on the bubble or safely in the NCAA tournament field. It sets up what will likely be a volatile tournament where anything can happen except (probably) the high seeds sweeping to the finals. March 4, 2023: Michigan State closed its regular season on Saturday with an 84-78 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes to sweep them for the season. This game was much closer than the 21 point beat down in Columbus where OSU couldn't hit open shots but tonight MSU relied on lethal outside shooting. The Spartans now await the results of Sunday's game to find out their seeding in the Big Ten Tournament which could include a double bye or a matchup on Thursday. This team is very quickly starting to look like a team that has a run in it if it can shore up its defense and add a little more transition game to get easy buckets. March 2, 2023: The end of the regular season comes to a conclusion on Saturday as MSU welcomes in the Buckeyes from Ohio State. In what has to be one of the most challenging years for a team with key injuries, an insane travel schedule, and then a mass shooting on campus leading to a home game cancelation it is remarkable how well the team has actually done. It's always an emotional day on Senior Day but we suspect they will handle it well as they have in multiple emotional games to date. Ohio State is coming into the game on a two game winning streak which is notable after they had dropped 14 of their previous 15. However, the Buckeyes will have a depleted roster without Junior big man, Zed Key, which forces them to start 6'11" Freshman Felix Opara with no size in reserves. It will certainly be an interesting matchup and one that will significantly affect the seeding for MSU in the Big Ten Tournament. February 28, 2023: In one of the starkest differences between halves, MSU barely managed to maintain contact with Nebraska going into halftime 38-26 despite only scoring 10 points in the first 12 minutes of the game. Horrendous shooting and even worse defense gave Nebraska a lead as big as 15 which turned out to be not nearly enough for the Cornhuskers. The second half was an entirely different game as MSU shot the lights out from 3 hitting 12-17 and scored 54 points while holding Nebraska to just 29 points. That allowed the Spartans to cruise in for an 80-67 win on the road that should solidify their place in the tourney and likely not drop below an 8/9 seed. Need Spartan gear?
