S1 Ep 404Treasured Because We Are Treasured, Proverbs 7, OT S1:E404
Sin is seductive, and leads to ruin, as is, and as does, adultery. We listen to the Lord's Wisdom, knowing that we are destined to defeat if left to our own devices. God calls to us in love, and warns of the deadly fruit of sin in our lives, so that we don't have to learn the hard way.
S2 Ep 206New Creations, II Corinthians 5, NT S01:E205
Building upon the jars of clay parable, Paul uses tents and houses to show how our earthly bodies will be transformed in the resurrection. Our hope for what is to be revealed in us gives us good reason to share the faith we have been given. When we share our hope in Christ, God's redeeming love transforms those around us.
S1 Ep 403All-Consuming Temptations, Proverbs 6, OT S1:E403
Sloth, dissension and lust are three sins capable of completely corrupting and ruining our lives. In this chapter, we are warned not to give in to these tempations, but rather to resist them with the wisdom God provides, knowing the dire risks we take if we don't.
S1 Ep 402Your Own Well? Proverbs 5, OT S1:E402
What does Solomon mean when he encourages his son to, "drink from his own well?" It is a metaphor best understood in a time and place where clean drinking water was a most precious commodity. It is an illustration of wedded love, which properly understood, encourages us towards godliness.
S2 Ep 205Jars of Clay, II Corinthians 4, NT S1:E205
Corinthian clay jars were anything but ordinary. Their incerdibly fine texture and workmanship made them highly prized by ancient mariners. You never knew what treasure was hidden inside. For many reasons, this parable spoke volumes to the Corinthian Christians whom Paul portrays as jars of clay.
S1 Ep 401Like the Dawn, Proverbs 4, OT S1:E401
Watching a sunrise, from predawn darkness to full light of mid day, gives us a beautiful and fitting image of God's wisdom at work in our lives. As our hearts and minds are enlightened with His love, our lives are blessed with an awareness of God's presence that transforms our lives and blesses all around us.
S1 Ep 400Grandma Lepley's Verse, Proverbs 3, OT S1:E400
My grandma highlighted these verses from Proverbs 3 in the Bible she gave me when I was in middle school. This gives us opportunity to reflect on the legacy of faith that many listeners seek to leave for their children through their own family Bible journal and journey.
S2 Ep 204Attaining the Divine, II Corinthians 3, NT S1:E204
According to Greek tradition and mythology, mere mortals had scant chance at attaining the divine. In this chapter, Paul explains how the Holy Spirit working in us brings us ever closer to God and His glory.
S1 Ep 399Wisdom is a Shield, Proverbs 2, OT S1:E399
Wisdom doesn't prevent all suffering, but it does protect us from much unnecessary suffering. Believe it or not, rates of transmission of sexually transmitted diseases are much lower for those who abstain from premarital or extramarital sex. It's common sense for those who know the Lord and seek to walk in His Wisdom, even if it's uncommon in our day and age. Instead of doing wrong, and wondering why we are suffering, let's seek to do right, and see how God's ways bless our way.
S1 Ep 398Beginning of Wisdom, Proverbs 1, OT S1:E398
The Proverbs are a collection of wise sayings, mostly of Solomon, the wisest man to ever live. Wisdom teaches godliness. The same God Who authored the natural laws that hold all things together shares insight into life that we can only recieve through faith. Thus, we seek the Lord in these chapters, to learn from Him who we are, and how we are to live.
Triumphal Procession in Christ, II Corinthians 2, NT S1:E203
In the ancient Olympic games, only one winner was crowned, and led in "victorious procession" while all the other competitors left as losers. All the praise and adulation given these ancient athletes, the great glory they garnered through their athletic prowess, Paul uses to encourage the Corinthian believers. We too will be led in triumphant procession in Christ. Not be cause of our great performance, but because of His love shown to us.
S1 Ep 397A Fitting End, Psalms 148-150
The psalms conclude with fitting songs of praise sung by the angels, heavenly host, us, and all of creation. We will forever thank God for His goodness to us and finally enjoy the life He's created us to live, in unbroken fellowship and communion with Him and all who are in heaven with us.
S1 Ep 396Unfathomable Love, Psalm 146-147, OT S1:396
Ever long for someone that you love, who, for whatever reason, you are seperated from? In this longing, you have felt a thimbleful of God's love and longing for you! In light of such unfathomable love, we will praise Him both now and forever.
S2 Ep 202Yes in Christ! II Corinthians 1, NT S1:E202
Paul uses the disappointment the Corinthians expressed towards him as a contrast to God's unfailing love for them. The Greek gods were notoriously fickle towards their subjects. Our God, to the contrary, is always favorable towards us because of the love we have received from Him.
S1 Ep 395Kind In All He Does, Psalm 145, OT S1:E395
How often do we think of God as a kind God? Those of us who know His goodness and kindness, we call to Him in love. The peace of knowing His kindness and love allows the godly to close their earthly eyes in death, looking forward to being welcomed by the God Who is always kind to us.
S1 Ep 394Our Sure Defense, Psalms 142-144, OT S1:E394
These three psalms of praise fit nicely into the psalter as reflections of the faithful person as this earthly life draws to a close. The entire psalter is a reflection on God's enduring faithfulness throughout life. As the book draws near its conclusion, we praise God for His unending goodness.
S2 Ep 201Preparing For His Return, I Corinthians 16, NT S1:E201
Just as the Corinthians were encouraged to prepare for Paul's return, we also are preparing for Christ's return. When we invest in His kingdom, we look forward with joy to see how our "investments" paid off in the eternal well-being of others.
S1 Ep 393Evil Lips, Psalm 140, OT S1:E393 Bonus!
bonusTowards the end of the psalms, in the middle of psalms of pure praise, we have our last Messianic psalm, a psalm of deliverance. Here we confront the evil of lies. We learn how God delivered His Son Jesus from lying lips and how He promises to rescue us from the same.
S1 Ep 393Inside out, Psalm 139-141, OT S1:E393
God loves you even when you don't love yourself! He made you and knows you inside and out. This classic psalm extols Him for His wisdom and love.
S1 Ep 392God's Purpose For You, Psalms 137-138, OT S1:E392
When we set our hearts and minds on things above, we are practicing for eternity. It is good for us to pursue godliness for the sake of those we serve. There is also the blessing of knowing that godly love gives us a preview of heaven.
S2 Ep 200Resurrection to Life, I Corinthians 15, NT S1:E200
Paul's legendary words, "if there is no resurrection, then we are of all people to be pitied," are recorded in this chapter. We learn how the reality of the physical resurrection of the death transforms every aspect of this life, while giving us unwavering hope for the next.
S1 Ep 391Enduring Love, Psalms 135-136, OT S1:E391
In these psalms, we are reminded that God's love endures forever! It is the reason for every good thing we enjoy, and the source of the redemption we've received from God.
S1 Ep 390Perfect Peace, Psalms 129-134, OT S1:E390
Like a small child, in a mother's lap, are those who know the love of our Heavenly Father! These psalms remind us of the perfect peace we have in Christ Jesus. If God is for us, there's nothing that the world can do to take away our eternal peace and joy!
S2 Ep 199Ancient and Modern Prophets, I Corinthians 14, NT S1:E199
The ancient Greeks had a deep tradition of prophecy, focused on the Pythia, Apollo's spokeswoman at Delphi. No surprise then, that the Corinthian Christians got a little confused about the role of prophecy in the life of the Church. We will work to understand, and untangle their mess, so that we can be clear about the role of prophecy in the Church today.
S1 Ep 389Eyes Fixed on Eternity, Psalms 124-128, OT S1:E389
When we gather in worship, we receive God's eternal blessings. We are made more aware of His eternal love and purpose. If this wasn't reason enough to love the Lord, He also invites us to share in His work, knowing that when we do, the work of our hands will endure forever.
S1 Ep 388Help From the Lord, Psalms 120-123, OT S1:E388
The psalms of ascent were likely sung by throngs of worshippers who processed to the Temple twice a year for Passover and the Day of Atonement. They celebrate God's redemption. We join in these praises, knowing that God's promised salvation is for now and forever!
S2 Ep 198Love, I Corinthians 13, NT S1:E198
The great love chapter of the Bible expounds on the blessings of "agape" love. The Cornithian understanding of love was polluted by temple prostitution, where worshippers had sex to honor Aphrodite the goddess of "love." Here we learn of God's more excellent love.
S1 Ep 387Like Buried Treasure, Psalm 119:89-176, OT S1:E387
How many thousands of people and countless TV shows feature people giving up all they have to find gold or other buried treasure? Too many. Instead of wasting our time and lives looking for lost loot, let us spend our time mining the blessings of God's Word and Wisdom!
S1 Ep 386Acrostic Psalm, Psalm 119:1-88, OT S1:E386
Not only is this the longest psalm and chapter in the Bible, it is a treasure of world literature. It is a 176 verse acrostic psalm, beautifully inspired to extol the blessings of God' Word in our lives.
S2 Ep 197Members of One Body, I Corinthians 12, NT S1:E197
There was a fascinating practice of the Corinthians where they offered clay replicas of hurting or diseased body parts to Aesclepias for healing. They understood the connections between body parts better than most ancients. Paul builds on their understanding to make a case for unity and building each other up in the Church, instead of taking each other for granted.
S1 Ep 385I AM the Gate, Psalms 117-118, OT S1:E385
We rejoice in the God Who has become our Salvation! These psalms of praise have more beautiful promises of God that were fulfilled in Jesus. We are made even more confident in our salvation because God told us how Jesus would redeem us hundreds of years before He was born!
S1 Ep 384End of Life Psalm, Psalm 116, OT S1:E384
In Psalm 116, God gives us a glimpse into His perspective on death. Instead of something to be feared, death is but the portal for His people into His eternal presence.
The Lord's Supper, I Corinthians 11:17ff, NT S1:E196b
Christ comes to us in His Supper, to forgive us, strengthen our faith, and encourage all who commune together. We learn how the Corinthian cultural context led these Christians astray, and lessons we can learn from their struggles.
S2 Ep 196True Godliness, I Corinthians 11:1-16, NT S1:E196
True godliness is possible only when we do the right thing, the right way, for the right reasons. But we are free to practice these things very differently. Apparently, in Corinth, head coverings had become a divisive issue. We learn why we should, and how we can encourage others in faith, even if their practice is quite different from ours.
S1 Ep 383Praise, Praise and More Praise, Psalms 112-115, OT S1:E383
Each of these psalms encourage us to join in the unending and eternal praise of God Almighty. All the false gods of this life are products of human imagination. We are focused on the all-surpassing God, Who's surpassing greatness and love are ever on the lips of his creatures.
S1 Ep 382Messiah's Psalm and Praise, Psalms 110-111, OT S1:E382
Even though the Old Testament saints didn't know the Name of their Savior, they knew much about Who He Is, and what He would do for them. These psalms moves us to praise the God Who so clearly laid out His plan of salvation in advance, for our encouragement.
S2 Ep 195The Rock Was Christ, I Corinthians 10, NT S1:E195
We learn how specific types of Christ from the Old Testament are great encouragements to us in our life of faith. It is so much easier learning from the mistakes of others than making them ourselves. Here we are reminded of the enduring value of types from the Old Testament.
S1 Ep 381What Gets You Excited? Psalm 109, OT S1:E381
What gets you excited? Not jsut a little excited. So excited that you would go out of your way to experience it? A favorite artist? Your favorite team? In this psalm we hear what gets God really excited.
S1 Ep 380Nowhere Without God, Psalms 107-108, OT S1:E380
The last book of psalms begins with confident assertions that God is always with His people. We can never outrun God and His love. He is ever with us to defend and protect us.
S2 Ep 194All Things to All People, I Corinthians 9, NT S1:E194
Paul challenges both pastors and people in this chapter. He challenges the people who were not supporting the workers in the church, expecting them to serve them for free. He also challenged pastors who would lord over their people. In this chapter, we see that we all have room for growth, as we aspire to be all things to all people.
S1 Ep 379The Mistakes of Others, Psalm 106, OT S1:E379
This psalm reminds Israel of the many times their ancestors had strayed from God and how poorly things went when they did. When we learn from the mistakes of others, we are spared from suffering many consequences. The psalm ends with a plea for salvation and by blessing the God who saves His people.
S1 Ep 378Made For You! Psalms 104-105, OT S1:E378
God made the world for us to enjoy! So, let us live knowing we are blessed by God to enjoy beauty, food and the work we do.
S2 Ep 193Freedom to Love, I Corinthians 8, NT S1:E193
God gives us freedom, as He does every other good gift, to benefit others. If we think it is ok to needlessly offend others, we are the fools. Instead of pleasing ourselves, we are called to please God by lifting each other up.
S1 Ep 377From East to West, Psalms 102-103, OT S1:E377
A psalm of repentance is followed by a classic psalm of praise that describes God's unlimited love in unequivocal terms. How did the psalmist know how to accurately describe God's love by using two perfect measures of God's love? Only by inspiration of the Holy Spirit is this possible!
S1 Ep 376Praise and Purity, Psalms 98-101, OT S1:E376
These psalms of praise are capped off with an encouragement to live into the Lord's way of purity. What we fill our time and eyes and mind with is determinative in the character and quality of our life. Recognizing God's wisdom and love, we are encouraged to live pure and decent lives in all we say and do.
S2 Ep 192Faith and Marriage, I Corinthians 7, NT S1:E192
Paul talks about the real blessings and burdens of marriage. Being wed to another human being gives us ample opportunity to practice godly virtues. But whether or not we are married, we are called to godliness. Here we consider the real-life applications of our faith, whether we are married or single.
S1 Ep 375Praise For Who He Is, Psalms 95-97, OT S1:E375
These psalms describe humanity and all of creation praising God for Who He Is! All other gods are figments of human imagination. When we praise the Lord for Who He Is, we join in the unending chorus of all creation.
S1 Ep 374Even in Old Age, Psalms 92-94
God's people had been exiled, at least in part, because their leaders had embraced ungodliness instead of righteousness. In these psalms, leaders are reminded that God is not a fool, and will not be mocked, even if we fool ourselves or others. At the same time, the righteous are encouraged in godliness, because godly virtues will never grow old.
S2 Ep 191Just Sex, Huh? I Corinthians 6, NT S1:E191
Sex is the most intimate of human connections. Used according to God's design, it's a great blessing. Taken out of marriage, it causes great harm. Here we are encouraged to lead pure and decent lives in all we say and do.
S1 Ep 373Refuge and Rescue of the Righteous, Psalms 90-91, OT S1:E373
In this fourth book of the psalms, our focus shifts to God as an eternal king. It is likely that many, if not all of these psalms were written after the monarchies of Israel and Judah had fallen. Living under other rulers, God's people long for the righteous reign of God.
