Flopcast 725: School of Flop
Flopcast episode 725! In yet another Flopcast Top 4 1/2 List, we’re counting down our favorite movies about bands. And since we’ve ruled out documentaries and biopics, that leaves movies about fictional bands. Some of our picks are obvious, as Jake and Elwood get the band back together, some wacky Irish kids bring soul to Dublin, and Eddie, you know, cruises. But one or two lesser known films also make the list. (Did anyone besides us see Still Crazy? Come on, get on that.) If this isn’t enough fictional band action for you, go see our friends at Dragon Con’s American Sci-Fi Classics Track, where this subject is an ongoing obsession. Meanwhile, enjoy, and remember: This podcast goes to eleven, but then immediately sinks back down to about a three. #spinaltap #bluesbrothers #commitments #velvetgoldmine #eso #esonetwork #geektalk #geekpodcast #geek #nerdtalk #nerd #nerdpodcast #podcast #flopcast Episode 725 complete show notes and links at www.flopcast.net! Alan’s Record Bin #1 – 5 Forgotten AOR Songs
E5 Forgotten AOR Songs This week Alan from Modern Musicology launches a new side-project! In this series of shows, I’ll tell stories behind some of the albums in my collection. This week, we’re talking about 5 Forgotten AOR Songs! These are tracks that got airplay on Album Oriented Rock radio stations back in the day but have mostly been left behind, frozen like a moment in time. You’ll hear about two men who walked away from bands at the height of their popularity, a band that was poised to be huge but never quite got there, a singer with a big voice who never quite found her audience, and a new band that maybe sounded a little too much like bigger, more established band. Ep 14Luke Ski’s Animation & Stuff Podcast – Episode 14: Let’s Call Them Flaps – featuring Ross Childs
EThe second half of this episode was recorded live on stage at MarsCon 2026. My guest was comedy musician and TikTok star Ross Childs. Or rather, that’s what the plan was, when suddenly Vice President J.D. Vance arrived in his place. Being the seasoned professional I am, I forged ahead and took questions for VPJD from the MarsCon audience, including some coming from multiple past guests of this podcast. It got weird. And that’s saying a lot coming from me. Since I wasn’t able to get any proper animation talk in the live podcast recording, I later recorded an additional half hour of on-topic talk at my home with our most frequent guest Tony Goldmark, as well as my girlfriend Kalani Mitchell. We started off talking about the Disney Afternoon soundtrack album and other music from their shows that we loved, and we did a quick review of Pixar’s “Hoppers”. So hopefully starting with that will balance out the mascara-laden rantings of the second most powerful, uh, person I suppose (?), in America. Great Lakes Geek Fest
Episode 48: Great Lakes Geek Fest Subtitle: Selling at the Con This week, we take Have Coffee Will Travel on the road—well… to a convention hall here in Sault Ste. Marie for the very first Great Lakes Geek Fest, put on by Kanto Kreations. And yes—we had a booth. Why? Because Shawn is turning 50, and apparently that means it’s time to start letting go of a lifetime of collecting. (Emotionally? Maybe. Financially? Also maybe.) We packed up a little bit of everything: Funko Pops, mystery bags, vintage diecast cars, plushes, action figures, VHS tapes, LEGO… if it lived on a shelf, there’s a good chance it made the trip. Leah joined in too, giving a little spotlight to her footcare business—because nothing says “comic con” like healthy feet and solid arch support. We’re also joined by our friend RJ this week, making this a rare three-host episode. Alongside helping at the booth, Leah and RJ drop a tease about the next play they’re directing. No title yet—we tried—but you’ll have to stick with the podcast for the eventual reveal. Somewhere between sales and storytelling, we dive into a classic debate: what is the best Star Trek series? Opinions are strong, as expected. We also talk about the surprising news that Starfleet Academy has already been canceled by Paramount+—so when season two arrives, that’ll be the end of the line. To wrap things up, Shawn shares a new adventure: a YouTube channel focused on life, turning 50, and figuring things out as you go. If that sounds like your vibe, you can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/@TheLongWayShow It’s a little nostalgic, a little reflective, and a lot of fun behind the table at our first con. Grab a coffee and come hang out. The post Great Lakes Geek Fest appeared first on The ESO Network.
The 42cast Episode 279: Klaatu Barada Nikto
The Day the Earth Stood Still was a film released in 1951. It tells the story of an alien visitor coming to Earth with an important message for mankind. Humanity fears him, but the greatest threat to them is their own paranoia. In this episode we discuss this film. We talk about the characters and what we think of the performances. We discuss the effects and both how and why they hold up even today. We also examine the themes of the film and how well it develops them. Along the way we get into the spooky music, the film’s societal impact, use of tension in storytelling, and even a plot hole or two. Due to time constraints is no five-minute controversy this time. This week Stephen, Keith, Ashley, and Tom join the cast. Show NotesThe Gray Girl (film that Stephen is in) Like what you heard? Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/42cast. Flopcast 723: Superstars of Soul Silliness
Flopcast episode 723! While poking through a box of old magazines at Rubber Chicken Comics, we found something called Superstars of Soul. It’s an odd little educational workbook from 1986, and it taught vocabulary and reading comprehension to the kids while they learned about their favorite soul acts. So we’re flipping through the whole book today, and our conversation includes: Chaka Khan on The Love Boat! Prince punching a guy! Coffee for the Pointer Sisters! Jeffrey Osborne meets the Big Blue Bug! Hall meets Oates in a freight elevator! And lots more. (Is this just our excuse to talk about Irene Cara for two episodes in a row? Perhaps…) Also: Kevin is talking Scooby-Doo on A Podcask of Amontillado, and we’re celebrating Pi Day with an irrational pie. #1980s #80s #superstarsofsoul #debarge #irenecara #pointersisters #eso #esonetwork #geektalk #geekpodcast #geek #nerdtalk #nerd #nerdpodcast #podcast #flopcast Episode 723 complete show notes and links at www.flopcast.net! The 42cast Episode 277: Full Marks
Last time that we discussed Invincible we talked about how it stands many of the superhero tropes on its head and gives powerful characterizations without wallowing in cynicism as so many series do. In this episode we take a look at the third season of Amazon Prime’s Invincible. We discuss what this season teaches us about Mark, Nolan, Cecil, and others. We question whether Nolan is a redeemable characters. We talk about Mark’s character and whether he comes off as childish, principled, or somewhere in between. We debate nuance with characters like Rexplode and Powerplex. Along the way we get into the topics of Viltrumite culture, why Peter Cullen’s voice grants a character instant trust, time travel, and achieving full Marks. Stay for the outtakes where Cammie makes the case that The Hunt for Ben Solo was canceled because the Di$ney executives hate women. Our five-minute controversy this time asks if Marvel pulling their unnamed July 2027 film is a good or bad sign of their efforts to improve the performance of their brand at the box office. This week Cammie, James, and Nate join the cast. Show Notes:Invincible Seasons 1&2 42cast Episode Like what you heard? Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/42cast. Episode 47 — From Star Trek to Van Life
Episode 47 — From Star Trek to Van Life This episode of Have Coffee Will Travel looks a little different…because it is. For the first time, Shawn set up a camera and filmed the podcast while recording the audio. Why? Because he’s gearing up to launch a new YouTube project called The Long Way Around. The goal is simple: get comfortable on camera and learn the basics of video production along the way. YouTube video: https://youtu.be/yj0C2Bwm3Fk?si=5dw-J0FTCx1nZL0c Naturally, that led to a fun behind-the-scenes conversation about what it takes to start a talking-head YouTube channel. Shawn shares what he’s been researching lately—camera framing, sound quality, lighting, and how to actually talk to an audience through a lens without feeling awkward. It’s part learning process, part experiment, and Leah is more than happy to help put him through his paces. Then the episode shifts into a very appropriate theme. Since this is episode 47—a number every Star Trek fan recognizes—Leah fires a series of questions at Shawn about the legendary sci-fi franchise. Think of it as Star Trek for Beginners. Shawn explains why the series matters, what makes it unique, and why it’s captured imaginations for decades. If you’ve ever wondered what all the fuss is about, this is your crash course. After that, we catch up on life lately. Leah is eagerly waiting for her bees to arrive as she dives into the world of beekeeping, while her foot care business continues to slowly ramp up. Shawn, meanwhile, is getting excited about seeing Godsmack live in June with his two brothers. We also share a slightly unusual travel plan: converting a used Dodge Grand Caravan into a simple camper. The idea? Use it during road trips—especially when we head to the World’s Longest Yard Sale—so we can skip the hotel and sleep in the van instead. We wrap things up with some small-business talk, including recent Etsy sales and Shawn getting back into selling on eBay. Plus, we give our brutally honest review of Eyes Wide Shut (spoiler: we did not love it) and talk about preparing merchandise for our upcoming booth at Great Lakes Geek Fest on March 22. It’s a little Star Trek, a little entrepreneurship, and a little van-life dreaming—exactly the kind of conversation that happens when you sit down for coffee with us. Flopcast 722: Uncertain Fury
Flopcast episode 722! In the wake of last week’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame episode, Kevin and the Mayor check out documentaries about two of the nominees: Luther Vandross and Jeff Buckley. (Kevin also stumbled upon a 1985 movie starring Tatum O’Neal and Irene Cara that we suspect has never been seen by anyone else ever.) And we brave the mean streets of Allston, Massachusetts (featuring poorly shoveled sidewalks and drunk college kids) to see a couple of wonderful bands: Foxy Shazam (those glam rock maniacs responsible for the Peacemaker opening theme song) and Descartes a Kant (a Mexican quartet with Devo-style costumes and a super-cool retro-futuristic concept album). Plus: The Mayor is a guest on a couple of other podcasts (The Doctor’s Beard and The 42cast) to discuss Doctor Who, Witchblade, and perhaps other nerd stuff. #luthervandross #jeffbuckley #foxyshazam #descartesakant #irenecara #eso #esonetwork #geektalk #geekpodcast #geek #nerdtalk #nerd #nerdpodcast #podcast #flopcast Episode 722 complete show notes and links at www.flopcast.net!
