A Truly American Success Story
Up front some disclosure: I endorse Omaha Steaks on the radio. This is actually really cool because I’ve been a customer of theirs for over 20 years. Now, more than 20 years after I first gave Omaha Steaks as a gift to someone, I get to tell people on the radio about them.I’m an actual customer of a great American success story. They offered to let me interview their CEO, Todd Simon. Todd, sadly, became the CEO of Omaha Steaks last week when his cousin, Bruce, died. Todd and Bruce had worked together as partners in a business their fathers shared. Todd and Bruce were the fifth generation. Todd now carries on the family legacy.Instead of doing politics, I wanted to share with you all the story of a great American success story, which interestingly begins as a story of religious persecution. In the early 1900’s, father and son JJ and BA Simon fled religious persecution in Riga, Latvia. They wound up in New York City, passing through Ellis Island. Not content in the city, the father and son boarded a train intent on hopping off when they got to land that looked like Latvia.Arriving in Omaha, NE, they got off the train and went to work. By 1917, they had established what became known as Omaha Steaks. In the 1920s, they started selling steaks to the train company and over time passengers who had passed through Omaha and eaten the steak on the train started calling to see if the company could ship steaks to them at home. Using waxed paper and ice, the company started shipping steaks. The mail order business exploded later in the 1950s and it was one of the first companies to adopt a new technology called toll free calling so customers could bypass the expensive long distance charges of the 1970s.The whole story and the company are fascinating, including their forethought in how to stock up and handle orders as the global pandemic reached American shores. I hope you’ll listen to my interview with Todd Simon.Lastly, if you go to OmahaSteaks.com and put ERICK in the search bar up top, you’ll get a great deal from Omaha Steaks. This is a public episode. The Truth About That Shadow Campaign
Molly Ball in Time Magazine put out a story at the end of last week, The Secret History of the Shadow Campaign that Saved the 2020 Election, and a lot of people seized upon the story to continue to perpetuate outrage over a stolen election and claiming this was the proof. If you read the story, they didn't really steal the election. They strategized and they outmaneuvered Republicans. That's not theft, that's incompetence on the Republican side. There's no theft or fraud, there's just nothing more than crafty campaigning. A lot of people want to pedal the myth of the stolen election because it makes them feel better. It also makes them, I'm learning, feel unburdened. They no longer have to participate in a process that they don't particularly like anymore. It's icky and they can just wash their hands of it and say, "Well, it's stolen, time to withdraw from the scene and do nothing." It provides them their excuse to extricate from a messy political process where deep down, they really don't believe it was stolen, but they have to hide behind that excuse for why they've given up on culture and politics. They just don't like the dirtiness of it. They see this article and it provides them further excuse making for their loss and their walking away. What the article actually does is show just how inept the Republicans were in 2020 across the board. Privately, when you talk to members of President Trump's campaign team, including those who participated in the post-mortem of their election, they will admit there was a lot of ineptitude on the Republican side. Many of them are now screaming about a stolen election, which has provided them a smokescreen to avoid being held accountable for their incompetence. This has nothing to do with the President, but the people who surrounded the President and made a lot of money grifting off of President Trump's campaign.Molly Ball provides a portrait of a group that begins as a progressive activist coalition of unions and corporate titans that evolves into a bipartisan group towards the end of the election, as the fallout from the election was exacerbated. Now, you have to remember, a bunch of progressives were threatening to burn down America if they didn't get their way. There are other progressives who were alarmed that their own side would potentially want to burn down America if they lose, yet were equally worried about the President’s election antics and wanted to ensure election integrity.More importantly, these progressive wanted to win. The progressives organized in a way Republicans used to organize and Republicans failed to even mount a comparable effort. As an example, let’s look at Georgia. In the late 1990s and early 2000s when I was highly active within the Republican party as a lawyer, as a chairman of the College Republicans, as a campaign manager, and campaign consultant, one of the things Republicans did very well is organizing the state and build coalitions. I worked for Saxby Chambliss as his coalition's volunteer director when he was running for Congress. Essentially, they gave me a title and I wrote letters on his behalf to different coalitions. This helped the pro-life groups and the gun groups to coordinated and get on the same page heading towards a common purpose. The coalition building went down to the precinct level. Every county is divided into areas and every area is divided into precincts. I live in Bibb County in the Howard precincts. There are a number of Howard precincts that cover North Macon. In South Macon, you have the Rutland area and those Rutland areas are divided into precincts. Every precinct has roughly the same number of people in it and are frequently shifted around. There was a time when the Republican party in Georgia had every precinct mapped out and they knew every single Republican in those precincts, and they were in regular communication with them. This occasionally still happens in Georgia but it has atrophied within the Republican party. The Republicans in Georgia used to be so organized that if someone new was moving into the neighborhood, the party probably knew about it before that person even knew where to fill out their voter registration form. One day a helpful Republican would show up and make sure that person was registered to vote. I used to do this when I was in college. It was one of the things the College Republicans helped do in Georgia. The Democrats this year decided they needed to do something similar. They were able to build peer pressure upon social media companies to tamp down misinformation and disinformation. There's no proof that they got massive amounts of stuff deleted. They got some stuff silenced and taken down and others slowed down. They worked with media companies to make sure everyone understood there were certain narratives that needed to be advanced. This is all standard politics. They worked with corporations to make sure that if Joe Biden won, corporations would immediately, through various t

Secretary of State Pompeo
This morning on my radio show I interviewed U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The United States intends to crack down on the various Confucius Institutes on college campuses in the United States and the Secretary’s staff reached out to see if I’d get him on my show to talk about that. I also wanted to talk about the Armenian situation. This is a public episode. Yep, I Did Change
I need to acknowledge something from a former listener. You really should click on the podcast audio and hear me out. But I’ll make this brief here for those of you who don’t want to listen.A former listener told me last week that I’ve changed and he can no longer listen to me. It took him a day to explain what he meant. In short, he said I don’t fight the way I used to and don’t seem to recognize the country could very well come crashing down if Joe Biden gets elected. You know, he’s right. I have changed because he is and I was and many of you are wrong.Four years ago, three men showed up on my front porch to threaten my family because I publicly said I would not support the President in 2016. My kids were harassed in a store and so bullied at school from kids whose parents decided they hate me that we had to move our kids to a new, actually Christian school, as opposed to the supposedly Christian school they were at.On a regular basis people accused me of supporting Hillary Clinton and that I was complicit in the destruction of the country.Guess what? The country is still here, but not because Donald Trump won.I really was one of those people who believed every election was an existential crisis and we were on the verge of destruction. In 2008, I wrote regularly that if the GOP didn’t stop Obama and his Alinskite ways, the country was finished. In 2010, we needed to get the GOP in Congress or else. In 2012, if Romney didn’t win, we’d have Obamacare forever and socialism would take over. In 2014, by God if we can only get the Senate, we’ll stop everything. And guess what?Obamacare is the law of the land. The national debt is $27 trillion. And everyone is still angry and convinced the nation is over.Y’all, I cannot bring myself to lie to you. I used to really believe the nation would collapse if Obama or Clinton or Biden got elected. But we are still chugging along and both parties are complicit in the problems. But eternity matters more to me after nearly dying a few years ago. Enrolling in seminary made me realize how I was twisting my faith to comform to my politics and not the other way around. Here’s the dirty little secret that no one wants to talk about. The country is in decline because it is full of cultural rot and a man who cheated on three wives with porn stars isn’t going to stop that cultural rot anymore than Joe Biden who has been faithfully married to Jill Biden, but supports the leftwing politics you and I abhor.Netflix would not be releasing a show about twerking 11 year olds if only Democrats watched it. Republicans, Democrats, conservatives, progressives, Christians, and everyone else are contributing to cultural decline. Pornography, deviancy, and drug use are not exclusively the behaviors of people you disagree with, but of some of your friends, neighbors, and fellow churchgoers too.The good news is I’ve read the back of the Book. It is supposed to be this way and there is nothing you can do to stop it except to be on the winning team. To be on the winning team requires you to do something you very much do not want to do and that is to love your neighbor. I have read the passage and there are no caveats. If your neighbor is a Democrat or gay or Muslim or your childhood tormentor, scripture says you have to love them. It doesn’t say it will be easy.Washington is not going to save you. Trump is not going to save the country. But Jesus will save you and I am, at this point in my life, way more interested in eternity than the temporary. That does not mean I think you or I should surrender. That does not mean we should stay home. I’ll vote and I’ll encourage others to vote. But I’m not going to slip into despair and think the world is over if my side loses because Team Jesus does not lose.So I cannot adopt the ways of the world and I do not think you should either. The anger, protesting, violence, etc. that so many loud voices on the right think will have to come if Trump loses and those who say the left wins because they are nasty — I don’t think you can go in that direction without losing your soul or confirming you never were saved to begin with.In the Olivet Discourse, which you can find in Luke 21, Jesus says this“And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Luke 21::25-28 (ESV)Too many of us have for too long looked down at our phones in spittle fueled rages or listened to guys like me telling you the world would end if the Democrats won. Instead, we need to lift our heads because our redemption is drawing near. We need to commit to truth and righteousness, love

On the Calvinball Field
I want to leave you with this to listen to when you have time over the weekend. When I was a kid, I loved Calvin & Hobbes. I still do. Calvin was bad at organized sports as a six-year-old. Instead, he’d play Calvinball with his tiger, Hobbes, where the only rule is that there were no rules except you could never have the same rules twice. Halfway through a game, suddenly the game could change. A soccer game could become capture the flag and capture the flag could end by hitting golf balls via croquet mallets.“Eventually,” Calvin noted, “all our games become Calvinball.”We are living in Calvinball as a society. The rules keep changing, the game keeps changing, and the six-year-olds may be having a blast, but everyone else is getting kind of weary.Have a good weekend. This is a public episode. This Behavior Is Destructive to the President's Re-Election
I don’t even have much to say. I’m just passing this along. Less than twenty minutes ago, I had this interaction with a caller to my radio show. The caller posits that I should not hold the President of the United States to a higher standard than those around me and I should not criticize his idiot tweets.I disagree.I also think this sort of thinking is deeply destructive to the President’s own re-election chances when everything he does is affirmed and unchallenged. It just reinforces bad behavior. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit ewerickson.substack.com/subscribe

A Serial Griller: Talking to Matt Moore About His New Cookbook
One of my favorite cookbook authors is a self-described “serial griller.” What makes Matt Moore unique is he doesn’t want credit for all the recipes. He profiles some of the best chefs of the south and shares either the recipes they give him or the recipes he makes from their inspiration. He has a new book that just came out called “Serial Griller.” It’s not a book for low and slow cooking. It’s for direct heat. It’s not just for meat. It’s for vegetables and dessert too.I talked to Matt today about his new book and what it’s like to put a cookbook together and build trust with chefs to get their recipes. You can listen above. You can buy the book here.He also has two others. The South’s Best Butts and A Southern Gentleman’s Kitchen, which is also one of my favorite cookbooks in general. Opening Time
States across the country are preparing to reopen. In Georgia, Brian Kemp is getting a lot of hell from the national press and local press for doing so. A lot of that, frankly, is that Kemp beat Stacey Abrams in 2018 and the national press has hated him ever since. But in Georgia, internal GOP polling shows Kemp with his worst job approval rating ever and, should the election be held today, Trump would only tie Joe Biden. This is state party polling and it is brutal for the GOP.If the polling trends do not shift, the GOP could see a blowout in Georgia in November and put at risk its ability to unilaterally draw new legislative lines. A lot is riding on Kemp’s ability to manage the situation as the state opens up.As to how Georgia and other states are reopening, it is very simple — slowly and with masks.I sat down with Governor Kemp and interviewed him about not just how the state will proceed, but also what the state will do if the virus flares up. To Drink Bleach or Not
This should not be a news story. If the media did not suffer Trump Derangement Syndrome, it would not be a news story. The media is treating this like the hydroxychloroquine stuff and it is fundamentally different. In this case, President Trump’s advisor advised that bleach and disinfects kill the virus. Surprise! Not sure if you would have known that without a presidential advisor telling you. Likewise, sunlight is a disinfectant. Again, surprise. Hasn’t your mom ever told you to get outside to get sunshine? You can hear the President ask the question in the audio above.Let’s break it down. The President asks if there is a way to get UV light into someone through their skin. There actually is. It is called a tanning bed. But that’s beside the point. The President was not suggesting people do it. He very clearly says the experts need to test it.The same goes for disinfectants. He actually says the medical doctors need to test it. He never suggests a home remedy. He never suggests you try it at home. He simply never suggested it. You can hear the audio yourself. He is talking about testing by experts. You can think it is silly. I do. You can think there is such a thing as a dumb question and this was it. I do. But to think the President is suggesting you try it is even dumber. Ultimately, this is about the press thinking you people are too stupid to know the difference. There are surveys being touted that the public does not use the President’s statements about the virus to guide their lives. But the media acts like the public does that.It was the media going nuts that turned this into a story. It was the media amplifying this that forced Lysol to release a statement advising people not to ingest Lysol. The President did not do any of that. He asked a dumb question but he made sure to phrase it in terms of needing testing and research. That the media think he was advising people to drink bleach really speaks poorly of the media and reveals just how stupid the reporters think people are. Post-Pandemic Society: An Interview With Georgia's Governor on Reopening His State
I interviewed Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia a short time ago about opening back up Georgia. I normally only make these interviews available to subscribers. Tomorrow, subscribers will exclusively get my interview with Walt Ehmer, the CEO of Waffle House on how the virus has affected that company’s business. So:But I want to make this available to everyone because we talked about one particular thing that is not getting enough attention and needs to be part of the conversation. The virus is not going away.In this global society, we cannot and have no appetite to do what a Harvard professor suggested — stay sheltered until there is a vaccine or shelter cyclically as the virus spreads. People’s patience is running out. We have not and will mot eradicate this virus. We will have to figure out a way to adjust society to accept that the virus is out there, our behaviors increase and decrease our chances of getting it, and businesses are a corridor through which it can spread. On top of that, people are stupid and stupid people are going to lower their guard, get the virus, and spread it to others. All of that is just reality. We sheltered in place as we needed to in order to stop hospitals from being overwhelmed. Those hospitals now think they can contain and meet any surge that follows. So in a reality with a virus that is not going away, how does society operate? Georgia is trying to figure it out. Georgia’s Governor is getting heat from partisans and the press for trying to find a way forward. He is listening to experts and is rolling out plans and guidelines to let businesses get back to work as best they can. Many of his critics have interpreted this as back to normal, but it isn’t really. It is a new normal, at least for now, that tries to accommodate the concerns about the virus spreading and the concerns about businesses going out of business. He may be wrong. The experts he listens to may be wrong. But we should wish Georgia well and hope they are able to chart a course to accommodate a virus that is not going away with a people increasingly desperate to get back to work. Subscribers will get that interview at noon today and yes, these robots are being unleashed to fight COVID-19. So if you want to hear about awesome killer robots and get all the content, click this button:Now, on to today’s thoughts. Roughly 1,987 years ago on Sunday, a man named Jesus from a town called Nazareth entered the city of Jerusalem with the crowd crying out, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” John 12:13 (ESV). Today, we remember the occasion as Palm Sunday. We are about to enter Holy Week, the holiest of days for Christians. A week from Sunday, we will celebrate the resurrection of the risen Lord. A week from today, I will take a break from covering the spread of the virus to focus on Good Friday and Easter. This is a week that should draw our attention. Even atheist scholars acknowledge the events Christians call Good Friday and Easter amount to one of the, if not the, most important events in human history. But this week will be different from prior Holy Weeks. This year, most of us will not go into churches, but onto the internet to worship online. We will not take communion together, but apart. The world is upended. In our living memories, we have not experienced anything like this. But the world has. In Jerusalem, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is closed. The church is believed to be built around both the tomb in which Jesus’s body was placed and Golgotha, where he was crucified. The church has not closed its doors indefinitely since 1349 when the Black Plague struck Jerusalem. 671 years later, history repeats itself. The world may seem undone, upended, disconcerting, and worrying, but consider one point. We do not know precisely the year in which Jesus of Nazareth entered Jerusalem. The historic record notes that he did and that he was crucified. Christians believe he rose again from the dead. But there is something more that gets lost in the message. Jesus could not have entered Jerusalem a week before or a week after or a year before or five years after the day he entered Jerusalem as a king. His entry and its timing was part of a master plan put in place before time began. In the same way, this virus could not spread without God allowing it and it could not spread when it did except as part of a master plan we do not understand and cannot see. But all of it happens before a throne on which sits the Creator of all things who sees all things and knows all things. The unbeliever will see this all as random act — a butterfly flapping its wings half a world a way that caused a storm above your house. The Christian knows God created the butterfly and placed it there half a world a way that it might flap its wings. The unbeliever will see that as us all just puppets. There are, however, no strings attached to you or me. But there is an all-knowing, fully sovereign God, who has a plan for all of us and sets us to it and blesses us with our own volition to see our lives forward on a path he sets that we may not recognize for purposes we may not understand or ever really appreciate. The unfolding of the world is a surprise to us, but not to him. All things are part of a plan that glorifies him and reveals his majesty to us. As R. C. Sproul said, “If there is one single molecule in this universe running around loose, totally free of God’s sovereignty, then we have no guarantee that a single promise of God will ever be fulfilled.” Every one of us has free volition, but every one of us also has a purpose. God himself chose each of us in some way to be part of his plan. In the Book of Amos, God declared that “I sent among you a pestilence after the manner of Egypt; I killed your young men with the sword, and carried away your horses, and I made the stench of your camp go up into your nostrils; yet you did not return to me.” (Amos 4:10). Your theology needs to account for this, not randomness. Your theology needs to account for God being s

In the beginning…
Don’t use this as a substitute for church. Don’t use it as a substitute for your own time in scripture. But if you need something in the absence of the ability to connect with a church, feel free to take a listen. This is my meditation on Genesis 1:1, and actually was the first sermon I ever preached. I got up on stage at an event in Colorado and who should sit down in the first row? John MacArthur. Yeah, that John MacArthur. Needless to say, my 20 minute sermon went by in about 8 minutes. So I had to redo it just to prove I could do it. This is me in my office just focusing on the words: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. This is a public episode. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp Talks About COVID-19's Spread in Georgia
A little while ago, I interviewed Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp about the spread of COVID-19 in Georgia. The daily count of the virus has gone up to over 40 cases and now impacts the entire metro Atlanta area. Three counties in South Georgia also now have cases. The University System of Georgia is shuttering. Many counties in Georgia are closing schools early for spring break. Even the state legislature has shut down and left Atlanta early — a first since probably the Civil War (don’t hold me to that).Governor Kemp is urging churches to close and schools to close but is not yet demanding it. He wants local systems to have flexibility. I talked to him about all these things and the state of the budget if the legislature is leaving before wrapping up their legislative session with work still to do. This is a public episode. A Fight Over Coal and Water Disrupts Georgia's Legislature
Lake Juliette is a peaceful part of the state. About fifteen minutes from my house, I take my kayak out regularly to paddle the water. There are no fast boats on the placid water. It is mostly people practicing scuba diving, fishermen, and kayakers like me.Looming in the back of the lake is one of the biggest coal plants in the United States, Plant Scherer. Operated by Georgia Power, it is one of the most efficient plants in the nation and is constantly under attack from environmentalists.Right now, it is also under attack from the community of Juliette that exists in the shadow of the plant. Anyone who has seen the 1991 movie Fried Green Tomatoes has seen Juliette. The movie used Juliette’s Whistle Stop Cafe as center stage for the movie.Several years ago, the residents in the area found uranium in their water wells. The area has a high concentration of people with various cancers and ailments. At first, people suspected Georgia Power was to blame for radon and uranium. But it turns out the area, in the piedmont region of Georgia, has uranium under the granite slab that comes down from Atlanta. Deep wells cause radon in the area. Now, several years removed from that, residents are finding chromium in their water. Some tests show chromium at 10 parts per billion in the water. The EPA says anything less than 100 parts per billion is acceptable. California set a 10 parts per billion standard only to see its Supreme Court raise their standard. Some research suggests the chromium is as natural in the piedmont region as uranium and radon. But chromium could also come from unlined coal ash ponds polluting the groundwater. There just so happens to be one in Plant Scherer. Residents are demanding action from the state legislature. Georgia Power says it is closing the coal ash pond and draining water from it. Residents and activists are not placated and are demanding more action.Democrats in the state legislature are seizing on the issue as a wedge to hurt Republicans. The media is covering it. Several outside activist groups continue to raise attention and demand action. But there remains the unresolved question of whether the chromium is naturally occurring or from Georgia Power. There’s also the question of how best to deal with the issue.Back in the late ’80s, Monroe County where the area is wanted to run pipes and provide water. The residents of Juliette insisted they had good well water and were fine. Now, as the county reconsiders running pipes to provide municipal water and the costs, the residents need help, Georgia Power is a scapegoat, and the state legislature is racing to solve a problem without fully understanding everything involved.I spoke to a resident of Juliette, Georgia and also to John Kraft of Georgia Power to get both sides of the story.
