S21 Ep 14Yes, Another Ides of March Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. It's that time of year once again when we remind tyrants that all is not what it appears to be. The Fates move in strange and mysterious ways. Also, the Spring Equinox or Ostara a Pagan solar holiday honoring the spring’s warmth, light from the sun, and the awakening of the earth is upon us. Diana Reeves, Founder & Executive Director and Luan Van Le, Development & Communications Director of GMO/Toxin Free USA joins us to discuss "The Revolving Door" that allows corporados and other such dark side low-life go from one bad situation to another. We hope they get their comeuppance. That said, the worst of the worst is His Malignancy himself who happens to be perfectly exposed in our Quote of the Week:"...at this moment in history, the fate of virtually everyone on the planet is being impacted by the toxic cocktail of character flaws, insecurities, and pathologies that are shaping the actions of the President of the United States."- David Rothkopf The Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S21 Ep 13A Climate Obstruction Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. You may recall on our last show we spoke of Climate Obstruction: A Global Assessment"? One of the editors, Jennifer Jacquet joins us this week for a deeper dive into the details. Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week concerns our focus this week:"Climate obstruction involves intentional actions and efforts to slow or block policies on climate change that are commensurate with the current scientific consensus of what is necessary to avoid dangerous human interference with the climate system." - Timmons Roberts, J.et al. S21 Ep 12An Old-Growth Biotic Pump Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Not long ago a fascinating video came our way titled "Old Growth Forests - Nature's Biotic Water Pump" that informed us in great detail yet another reason to protect, preserve and enable old-growth forests to flourish. One of the presenters, Anastassia Makarieva, theorist at the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute in Russia, joins us for the interview. And our Enviro Show Quote of the Week: “Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts ...There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature—the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.” —Rachel Carson The Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S21 Ep 11Enviro Show Still on the Rocks
Greetings Earthlings. As the title says, we are still looking into all those rock formations out there, this time with Peter Waksman who blogs at https://rockpiles.blogspot.com/.Our Critter of the Week segment has some good old news from David Foster: "Wolves are becoming well established across mainland Denmark, are reproducing, and are expected to increase substantially. Through ongoing immigration from Germany and native breeding since 2019, the population now stands around 78 animals, comprising at least eight breeding pairs, six packs, 23–28 wandering individuals, and 35 pups born in the country in 2024. What makes this phenomenon so astonishing is how ill suited this countryside appears for wolves. That is, unsuited by conventional thinking, the kind that suggests that moose could not adapt to southern New England; that bears would not situate around the cities of western Massachusetts; or that coyotes, beavers, and fishers would not saturate these same landscapes. As I explored the dynamics of wolves in Denmark, I reflected on the ongoing return of native wildlife to the much more heavily forested landscape of New England and asked—Why not here?" Glad you asked, David. One reason is the cowboy mentality from days of old. We've talked about that on the show for years, just recently Glen spoke of Aldo Leopold's "Sand County Almanac" and the author's epiphany regarding this keystone species. And that brings us to our Quote of the Week: The cowman who cleans his range of wolves does not realize that he is taking over the wolf’s job of trimming the herd to fit the range. He has not learned to think like a mountain. Hence we have dustbowls, and rivers washing the future into the sea. - Aldo Leopold. The Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. Also, we are on air at WMCB, (107.9fm) streaming at http://wmcb.net/Listen.html in Greenfield, Monday at 8am & Wednesday at 7am & Friday at 8am, and at WMNB-LP 107.1fm Wednesdays at 6pm. S21 Ep 10The Enviro Show on the Rocks
Greetings Earthlings. You may have heard stories about mysterious rock formations people come upon in the woods with seemingly no explanation as to their origin? Some appear to be actual shelters, others like intentional platforms or markers. There are a lot of theories about their origin but not much science. Mike Luoma author of "Ancient Stone Mysteries of New England" joins us to explore the unknown. The Enviro Show Quote of the Week is..."When written in Chinese, the word 'crisis' is composed of two characters. One represents danger and the other represents opportunity."John F. KennedyThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. Also, we are on air at WMCB, (107.9fm) streaming at http://wmcb.net/Listen.html in Greenfield, Monday at 8am & Wednesday at 7am & Friday at 8am, and at WMNB-LP 107.1fm Wednesdays at 6pm. S21 Ep 9A Fungus Among Us Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. We are bringing in the New Year with news of yet another invasive species; no it's not the present gold obsessed occupants of the White House but rather invasive golden oyster mushrooms or GOM. A new study finds it "is changing native fungal biodiversity as it invades. GOM has spread rapidly in North America and will continue expanding its range." (unlike MAGA that is losing its range by the day). Aishwarya Veerabahu, lead author of the study joins us to forage the facts. Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week......“The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” ― Mark TwainThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S21 Ep 8A Winter Solstice of Our Discontent Enviro Show
Winter Solstice Greetings Earthlings. The Return of the Light starts on December 21st at 4.02am here in the eastern U.S. You may not be up at that hour but we see there are celebrations at other times. Wiccan priestess, Laura Wildman-Hanlon returns to the show to share with us. Also, Cecelia Doucette, Director, Massachusetts for Safe Technology returns to discuss electromagnetic pollution and what that means to us and all the critters out there. Also, you can take action HERE in support of a bill on Beacon Hill to opt out on this in your home. Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week:“...This is the solstice, the still point of the sun, its cusp and midnight, the year’s threshold and unlocking, where the past lets go and becomes the future." - Margaret Atwood The Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S21 Ep 7A Return of the Native Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. It's said that everyone loves a comeback story and we couldn't agree more when it comes to the American Chestnut Tree. Once a mainstay of life in New England forests and beyond it sadly fell victim to human ignorance and greed. Now, we are happy to report, after decades of failed attempts to overcome the blight, this amazing native tree has returned. Anne Petermann of the Global Justice Ecology Project returns to the show with the good news. Our Quote of the Week is quite on target for this show...“In some Native languages the term for plants translates to “those who take care of us.”-Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass The Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S21 Ep 6Being The Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Along time ago we were advised to "Be Here Now" which is a Zen sort of thing. Where else would we be? With that in mind professor, naturalist, and Buddhist author Christopher Ives joins us for a look at ‘green mental states’. Our Quote of the Week comes from this week's guest:Simply put, this historical moment calls for lifestyle change at the individual level and structural change at the societal level. We need this dual focus, for to call only for a reduction of our personal carbon footprints is to lay responsibility for causing and solving the problem at the feet of individuals and thereby let our economic system and powerful players like the fossil fuel industry off the hook. - Christopher IvesThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. Also, we are on air at WMCB, (107.9fm) streaming at http://wmcb.net/Listen.html in Greenfield, Monday at 8am & Wednesday at 7am & Friday at 8am, and at WMNB-LP 107.1fm Wednesdays at 6pm. S21 Ep 5A "Wholly Protected Landscape" Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Some good news from our friends at Kestral Trust: "2,000+ Acres of Forest in the West Quabbin Region [are now] Permanently Conserved...The land will be stewarded as “forever wild,” taking a passive management approach to the forest to encourage old growth conditions to develop." Presumably that means no destructive logging. Kristin DeBoer, Executive Director of Kestrel Land Trust joins us for the details. The Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S21 Ep 4Good Old Intelligence Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. We keep running across vague references to all the energy Artificial Intelligence (AI) uses and how bad it is for the climate but not much data. With that in mind we thought we'd share this short video investigative report from Business Insider for real world details. It seems AI may not be so intelligent after all.Our Quote of the Week comes from one of the founders of AI:The research question is: how do you prevent them from ever wanting to take control? And nobody knows the answer [...] The alarm bell I’m ringing has to do with the existential threat of them taking control [...] If you take the existential risk seriously, as I now do, it might be quite sensible to just stop developing these things any further [...] it’s as if aliens had landed and people haven’t realized because they speak very good English.Geoffrey HintonThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S21 Ep 3A SeeYouInCourt Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. There's another kind of Environmental Justice and it happens in courtrooms. Meg Sheehan, co-founder of Community Land & Water Coalition returns to the show as we discuss a recent court victory regarding AD Makepeace's sand mines on Federal Road in Carver, MA. She will also talk about legislation H918 & H948 on Beacon Hill.In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we are wondering if it's just a fluke that a study on forests failing in the Climate Crisis was conducted by Wake Forest University?? "The destruction of the forests is a threat to our entire global ecosystem. The forests in the Amazon and Andes help reduce carbon pollution and are also the home of many diverse plants and animals. Unfortunately, this is not the only news that suggests there are reasons to be concerned about the health of our forests. A UN biodiversity summit declared 38% of the world's trees are at risk of extinction. Another report suggested that trees are losing their natural ability to store carbon because of their disrupted ecosystems." This is the last thing us in the forest & tree protection community need to hear. The Takers (most of whom deny the climate emergency even exists) will obviously use the study as yet another reason to clearcut the planet. How about a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions, guys? Wake up! Hello?? The Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. Also, we are on air at WMCB, (107.9fm) streaming at http://wmcb.net/Listen.html in Greenfield, Saturday 5pm & Sunday 9pm & Monday at 6pm, and at WMNB-LP 107.1fm Wednesdays at 6pm. S21 Ep 2An Unconventional Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Like our new & improved look? One of the most under reported news stories over the past decade concerns far-right efforts to launch a new Constitutional Convention in which to rewrite the U.S. Constitution to their liking. If the Mad King's fascist redo fails (which it just might) this will be their Plan B. Lindsay Sabadosa, State Rep for the First Hampshire District joins us for the disturbing details and discuss her pushback bill H4745.Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week is exactly in keeping with our guest:We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.Abraham LincolnThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S21 Ep 1Stand Up for Standing Trees Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Obviously many people in Washington, DC have gone over the cliff into the MAGA Pit of Delusion & Hate. They represent some 30% or so of the U.S. population but some of them may have realized the error of their way. Regardless, the rest of us are here and many of us are standing up & fighting back. Chris Gish, Community Organizer at Standing Trees joins us to talk about building resistance to MAGA's War on Nature. The Enviro Show Quote of the Week is in keeping with our guest and the Green Mountain National Forest presently under threat: “We must protect the forests for our children, grandchildren and children yet to be born. We must protect the forests for those who can’t speak for themselves such as the birds, animals, fish and trees.”— Qwatsinas (Hereditary Chief Edward Moody), Nuxalk NationThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 24A No New Nukes Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings from the historic heart of the anti-nuclear movement here in Northeast USA. We thought we drove a well deserved stake into the heart of the corrupt nuclear industry and its followers long ago but, like vampires some things keep coming back. Deb Katz of the Citizens Awareness Network returns to the show as we shine some daylight into the crypt (be sure to scroll down to the bills on Beacon Hill). Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week takes us to our interview with Deb Katz:Flint is to the lead issue what Three Mile Island was to nuclear power. People are stepping back and thinking, 'There still is lead in my home?'Dick DurbinThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 23A Young at Heart Enviro Show with MYCC
Greetings Earthlings. We go back a ways when it comes to organizing and making good trouble to protect the planet from the Takers and Ne'er-do-wells who seem clueless about Mother Earth and the climate. It has always been encouraging to find younger folks stepping up to do the work as well, for instance, "The Massachusetts Youth Climate Coalition (MYCC) is a diverse, youth-led, adult-supported, network of organizations, clubs, and hubs founded in February 2020 and committed to centering the voices of Massachusetts’s young people in the climate movement". The Enviro Show is an enthusiastic supporter and we welcome some of them for the interview. Our Quote of the Week is in keeping with our youthful guests from The Massachusetts Youth Climate Coalition:There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.Sophia Loren The Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 22Nukes Back From the Dead Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. We don't want to frighten you, dear listeners but The Ghost of Your Nuclear Past is lurking in various Northeastern States as we speak. Both NY Gov. Hochul & MA Gov. Healey are for it (a bit of irony on the latter: we are told Healey's parents allowed the Clamshell Alliance to camp on their land for a Seabrook anti-nuke action) 😌. The good news is The Clamshell Alliance is still alive and pushing back. Cliff McCarthy & Shel Horowitz of The Commonwealth Coalition for Democracy & Safe Energy join us for the details. And our Enviro Show Quote of the Week:What strength belongs to every plant and animal in nature. The tree or the brook has no duplicity, no pretentiousness, no show. It is, with all its might and main, what it is, and makes one and the same impression and effect at all times. All the thoughts of a turtle are turtle's, and of a rabbit, rabbit's. But a man is broken and dissipated by the giddiness of his will; he does not throw himself into his judgments; his genius leads him one way but 't is likely his trade or politics in quite another.- Ralph Waldo EmersonThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 21Another Summer Solstice Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Perhaps by the time you read this Summer Solstice will be behind us and S.2288/H.3549 and S.2287/H.3548 biomass bills will have come before a hearing in the MA Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy. Who knows where the biomass issue goes from there? Susan Theberge working with the Springfield Climate Justice Coalition on the Springfield Zombie biomass monster join us to answer some burning questions.Time for our Enviro Show Quote of the Week. Here's an appropriate one...Any fool can make a rule, and any fool will mind it.Henry David ThoreauThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 20A Standup Fight Back Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. We trust you've noticed all the standouts and demos against MAGA & His Malignancy of late? That knid of push back and more is exactly what we need to save this nation from itself. We have a LOT of that this week. The Enviro Show Quote of the Week:The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.Martin Luther King, Jr.The Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 19A Make Polluters Pay Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Do you really believe we should all pay for the fouling of our nest by the fossil fools? We sure don't and neither does Make Polluters Pay, "a campaign to create a climate superfund, penalizing the worst polluters of greenhouse gasses and funding resilience and adaptation projects in communities most impacted by climate change. 350 Mass joins Better Future Project and other groups like CREW (Communities Responding to Extreme Weather), Mass Youth Climate Coalition (MYCC), and more to drive a grassroots campaign to hold polluters accountable." Daniel Zackin, Legislative Manager at 350 Mass/Better Future Project joins us for the interview. Our Critter of the Week & Our Quote of the Week is a good one;"As I come over the hill, I hear the wood thrush singing his evening lay. This is the only bird whose note affects me like music, affects the flow and tenor of my thoughts, my fancy and imagination. It lifts and exhilarates me… It is a medicative draught to my soul. It is an elixir to my eyes and a fountain of youth to all my senses. It changes all hours to an eternal morning. It banishes all trivialness. … I long for wildness, a nature where the wood thrush forever sings, where the hours are early morning ones, and there is dew on the grass, and the day is forever unproved. … All that is ripest and fairest in wildness is preserved and transmitted to us in the strain of the wood thrush. It is the mediator between barbarism and civilization."Source for Thoreau’s quotations: The Writings of Henry David Thoreau: Journal, edited by Bradford Torrey. The Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 18A "Forests are Essential" Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. As we have mentioned on the show previously, Massachusetts Sierra Club's Official Chapter Campaign to End Logging On Public Lands Of the Quabbin, Wachusett, and Ware Watersheds is up and running. S20 Ep 17Another Arbor Day Enviro Show
Greeting Earthlings. We had a lot of Earth Day events recently, so many in fact that many folks began using the term "Earth Week". We say, why stop there? A reminder: Arbor Day is upon us! Yes, a special day focused just on trees and you know we're all about that on this show and with that in mind we have a special announcement: d.o.'s new collection of poetry & prose titled "It's the Trees" is launching. Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week may be a repeat but it's in keeping with the moment:“Deep down, at the molecular heart of life, the trees, and we are essentially identical.”— Carl SaganThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 16A Burning Question Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. We have covered recycling issues over the years on this show and mentioned how awful garbage-to-energy incineration is for our health and the environment BUT we never seem to have done a show on that burning issue. Finally, we have. Amy Donovan, Franklin County Waste District's Program Director returns to the show with the details. The Enviro Show Quote of the Week will to take us to our interview with Amy: Source Reduction is to garbage what preventive medicine is to health. - William RathjeThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 15An April Fools Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. We do not suffer fools gladly on this show and in this day and age there are so many out there, and given they are malicious fools, we are forced to push back against their evils. Michael Kellett of Restore the North Woods joins us to jest about the fools trashing our forests and our patience. Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week seems fitting: It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere. - VoltaireThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 14Yet Another Ides of March Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Once again it's time to remind certain despots to "Beware the Ideas of March". Their tendency to overstep can get them into deep trouble and others may act hastily in response. As a matter of fact, a LOT of others are already protesting about His Malignancy overstepping across the "empire". His fake DOGE department alone has created chaos across scores of government agencies. As a result lawsuits are being lodged and protests are increasing. DOGE fanboy, Elon Musk is watching sales of his Tesla cars and truck tank worldwide and more protests and sabotage at his dealerships & charging stations. At the same time, climate emergency protests continue, some initiated by scientists. Jamie McGonagill, Haley McHatton & Peter Watson of XR Boston join us to talk about their protest at Hanscom Airfield near Walden Pond.Time for the Enviro Show Quote of the Week and this one is spot on with regard to our guests this week:“Let your life be a counter-friction to stop the machine. What I have to do is to see, at any rate, that I do not lend myself to the wrong which I condemn.” ― Henry David Thoreau, Civil Disobedience The Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 13The Audubon Logging Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. When you hear Audubon you probably think of birds, right? Yes, the group does a lot on birds but what about logging in forests? Silvia Solaun and Katherine Evans of New Jersey Forest Watch/Friends of Sparta Mountain return to the show to explain as we complain. Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week:A growing number of governments and non-state actors are pledging to be carbon-free – and obviously that’s good news. The problem is that the criteria and benchmarks for these net-zero commitments have varying levels of rigor and loopholes wide enough to drive a diesel truck through. We must have zero tolerance for net-zero greenwashing. - UN Secretary General António Manuel de Oliveira GuterresThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 12The River Runs Backward Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. It's time to return to The River, our beloved Connecticut River still being subjected to all sorts of abuse by FirstLight corporados, even to the point of running her backwards while pumping out all the contents (live or otherwise) at the Northfield Mountain Pump Storage facility or, as we often call it here, the Shad-o-matic Fish Blender. Karl Meyer returns to the show to talk about that and the FirstLight 401 Water Quality Certification Application process hearing on Wednesday February 19 at the Cohn Family Dining Commons, Greenfield Community College, One College Drive, Greenfield, MA at 6pm with a Standout at 5pm we hope you'll join. The Enviro Show Quote of the Week: "Right now, the current administration is operating in outright defiance of our federal courts and declaring them powerless. By all marks, we’ve entered the early stages of full-blown fascism. And if there’s one thing we know about fascism, it’s that wars on the vulnerable keep them fired up. You’re already seeing so many pundits and opinion columnists scratching their heads, wondering how we got here. When you look at the history of this country, there’s not much of a difference between 17th-century puritanical America and fascism. We didn’t “get” anywhere. We were always like this." - Jessica WildfireThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. Zack Porter, Executive Director of Standing Trees returns to the show to explain why and offer solutions. The Enviro Show Quote of the Week-What an extraordinary gift trees are and how many things we can learn from them, if only we know how to watch, to see, to give them the love and attention that we give to friends! - Susanna TamaroThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 10A Degradation Nation Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. The rein of His Malignancy The Mad King 2.0 is upon us. Buckle up, rough road ahead but we need each other to guide the way. Remember the words of FDR to help show us the way, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself". That said, we must defend the land and its inhabitants under this Administration, the oligarchs and anti-American freak shows like the New Apostolic Reformation, especially regarding our forests and all the critters. Dr. Dominick A. DellaSala, Chief Scientist for Wild Heritage, a project of Earth Island Institute returns to the show for a look into the past and the future. And we have a good Quote of the Week to take us to our interview:The largest logging projects I’ve ever seen are targeting the last, best remaining old growth trees left in the country....We have a rogue agency in the Forest Service that is trying to benefit the logging industry before reforms take place. The situation is rampant as far as I can tell and it risks squandering a once-in-a-generation opportunity to protect these incredible forests.”- Chad Hanson, a forest ecologist and co-founder of the John Muir Project.Mongabay commentary by Dominick DellaSala- “How the U.S. got no old growth forest protections from the Biden Administration” can be found at this LINKThe paper discussed in this episode "Measuring forest degradation via ecological-integrity indicators at multiple spatial scales" by Dominick A. S20 Ep 8The 2024 Wild Winter Solstice Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings and Happy Yuletide. The term "Yule" was misappropriated from Germanic Pagans by proselytizing Christians as part of the Christmas observance. Wiccan priestess, Laura Wildman-Hanlon returns to the show to set the record straight on that and to share various Pagan celebrations of the longest night. How about an Enviro Show Quote of the Week to take us to our interview?"The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom." - Isaac AsimovWe've got a twofer for you this week. First Laura Wildman-Hanlon gets us into the Winter Solstice, then Susan Masino talks about finding and protecting wildlands in Massachusetts. The Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 7Our Forests Aren't Fuel Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Our forests are still under siege and the culprits are all around us. Like we say, Biomass is a biomess. Irina Costache and Regine Spector, Corresponding authors of "Feeding the zombie plant: The struggle over biomass in the United States" Department of Political Science, University of Massachusetts, Amherst join us for the interview. This brings us to our Quote of the Week: The Earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship. S20 Ep 6The Sand Wars Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Have you heard about The Sand Wars? We'll be focusing on Southeastern Massachusetts Pine Barrens here but it's happening across the planet because not all sand is alike. Melissa Ferretti, 4th term tribal chairwoman of the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe and Meg Sheehan, environmental lawyer and coordinator of Community Land and Water Coalition join us to dig into the issue. At the same time we will be celebrating MA Governor Maura Healey's issuing an Executive Order granting state recognition to the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe. The Sand Wars are taking place on or near tribal lands. Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week is from The Prez's climate guy:“This is not the end of our fight for a cleaner, safer planet. Facts are still facts. Science is still science. The fight is bigger than one election, one political cycle in one country. This fight is bigger, still, because we are all living through a year defined by the climate crisis in every country of the world.” - John PodestaThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 5Elect to Defend the Trees Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Is it "déjà vu all over again" like Yogi Berra once said? Or worse?? Strap-in, it's going to be a rough ride because! In terms of the Climate Crisis and the Sixth Great Extinction a LOT was riding on this election. Wait, did we forget to mention the future of our Nation? Speaking of, how about the lack of understanding and respect by far too many folks concerning our trees and forests. Michael Kellett, the co-founder and Executive Director of RESTORE: The North Woods returns to the show as we discuss what's wrong in this picture. And our Enviro Show Quote of the Week is:"Trumpism triumphed, and the godhead of this cult has become both the first fascist and the first convicted felon to win an American presidential election."- David CornThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 4The Don't Let Democracy Die Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings & Happy Halloween (or Samhain for you Pagan folk). So yes, there are monsters out there roaming about but we trust you'll hang with us....O wait, isn't that what Franklin said at the signing of the Declaration of Independence? Never mind, that's history but also when asked what we have at the close of the Continental Congress he said "A Republic, if you can keep it." So, how about we stay together, VOTE for the first woman president and rid the land of all the monsters trying to take over, OK? Wiccan priestess, Laura Wildman-Hanlon returns to the show to help us unearth the truth about Halloween. The Enviro Show Quote of the Week:“Samhain is considered by some to be the most important sabbat. This is because it represents the core experiences of the Craft: of traveling between the worlds, of experiencing death and rebirth, and of ultimately transcending both in the process; of not being afraid to face the darkness, or to think about that which we have lost; of not being afraid of the changes in our lives; of turning negative experiences into opportunities for learning.”~ Jennifer Hunter in 21st Century Wicca: A Young Witch’s Guide to Living the Magical LifeThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 3A Children of the Northern Forest Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Of course there's been a lot of talk lately about democracy being under threat here in the USofA and, on this show, we're always talking about threats to life on Earth. In his new book "Children of the Northern Forest" our guest, Jamie Sayen asks "Why have our democratic institutions failed to address existential threats to life on Earth?" Good question. We'll look for the answer during the interview. The Enviro Show Quote of the Week is in keeping with our guest's new book and the Northern Forest:“Deep down, at the molecular heart of life, the trees, and we are essentially identical.”– Carl SaganThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 2Yet Another CT River Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Have you heard about stranded Shortnose Sturgeon by the dam at Great Falls (aka. Turners Falls, MA) ? These ancient federally listed Endangered Species have been getting abused along this part on the Connecticut River seemingly forever. If it turns out they exist north of the dam (which is being studied as we speak) then the Sturgeon are further threatened by FirstLight's "shad-o-matic fish blender" (aka, Northfield Mountain Pump Station) which is in the process of getting a new operating license for.....are you ready?...50 years! That sucks....literally! It sucks untold number of tiny aquatic creatures, egg, yolk-sac larvae, fry, and juvenile fish, and more through grinding turbines, up hill to a man-made reservoir and back down through the turbines again to generate power. It seems to us, that's no place for an Endangered Species much less any other life form. FYI, there will be a public DEP Hearing on October 10 at 6pm at the Shea Theater in Turners Falls, MA. All Out! Priscilla Lynch and Gary Seldon of Connecticut River Defenders join us for the interview. The Enviro Show Quote of the Week now: What is a fish without a river? What is a bird without a tree to nest in? What is an Endangered Species Act without any enforcement mechanism to ensure their habitat is protected? It is nothing.- Jay InsleeThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S20 Ep 1A Pushing Back Enviro Show (with the MA State Auditor)
Greetings Earthlings. Sick & tired of governments overstepping their bounds? When it comes to trashing Mother Earth we sure are. Our roots go back to Earth First! and support for edgy groups like ALF & ELF. Perhaps one of the Highest profile defenders of the planet is Capt. Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation who is now imprisoned by the Danish Government in Greenland for interfering with the Japanese whaling fleet. Closer to home (and closer to legal), we were gratified to discover our Massachusetts Auditor Diana DiZoglio was interested in running an audit "to promote accountability and transparency, improve performance, and make government work better." She even sings about it. Enviro Show listeners well know our concerns about the lack of accountability on Beacon Hill and with agencies like the DCR and MassWildlife (to name a few). Auditor DiZoglio joins us with the interview. Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week:The whole art of government consists in the art of being honest.- Thomas JeffersonThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. rebroadcast Thursdays at 2pm. in MA. S19 Ep 25The MA Woodlands Powertrip Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. What do you think about some questionable entity taking "an exquisite parcel of public land near Mount Greylock, beloved by residents and visitors, and reducing it to chips"? We are paraphrasing our guest Lori Bradley, who along with Michaela Lapoint & Doonee Mackay of Save the Notch Forest Reservoir Bellows Pipe Trail join us to uncover the truth. See their petition HERE. The entity in question, once called the Mohawk Trail Woodlands Partnership, has been the subject of past shows. It's not pretty. It's business-as-usual trashing our forests in the so-called Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Our Quote of the Week seems fitting for this week's show:The idea of wilderness needs no defense. It only needs more defenders. Remaining silent about the destruction of nature is an endorsement of that destruction.Edward AbbeyThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. S19 Ep 24A Natural Solutions Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. The term "Natural Solutions" has been coming up quite a bit lately here in the old Commonwealth of Massachusetts, at Elders Climate Action there's a Natural Solutions Working Group and at the ever dubious Nature Conservancy they were quick to co-opt the term for their own corporate ends. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology was paying attention during COVID but what about here & now as the Climate Crisis ramps up and bogus or no solutions press in on us? Marta Vicarelli, Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst joins us to explore the obvious and more (1) & (2).The Enviro Show Quote of the Week: “Climate change isn’t an ‘issue’ to add to the list of things to worry about, next to health care and taxes. It is a civilizational wake-up call. A powerful message – spoken in the language of fires, floods, droughts, and extinctions – telling us that we need an entirely new economic model and a new way of sharing this planet. Telling us we need to evolve” – Naomi KleinThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. S19 Ep 23#EndLoggingOnPublicLand Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. You may have seen the hashtag above on X or elsewhere. We've been using it for a few years now and recently the Massachusetts Sierra Club's Forest Protection Team added the phrase to a new campaign they are rolling out as we speak. Lynne Man, Bill Stubblefield & Bart Bouricius from the Team join us for the latest on that. The Enviro Show Quote of the Week:"Let us… seek peace… near the inland murmur of streams, and the gracious waving of trees, the beauteous vesture of earth, and sublime pageantry of the skies. Let us leave 'life', that we may live." - Mary ShelleyThe Enviro Show on WXOJ-LP (103.3 fm) and streaming at www.ValleyFreeRadio.org from Florence, MA every other Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:00pm. S19 Ep 22An Experimental Enviro Show
Greetings Earthlings. Remember PETA's efforts to end animal torture at UMass Amherst?
