S12 Ep 310How To Have an Emotionally Healthy Surrogacy with guest Dr. Coleman Allen
I'm excited to have Dr. Allen joining me today on the Egg Whisperer Show podcast to talk about surrogacy and how to have an emotionally healthy journey. She is a licensed professional counselor who focuses on working with fertility patients, and has a lot of experience counseling people who have chosen a surrogate as part of their journey. Surrogacy is for everyday people who want to grow their family, but they are unable to do that with their own uterus for a number of reasons. In this interview, Dr. Allen and I talk about how we help patients focus on ways to keep the surrogacy relationship peaceful and harmonious. While any relationship can have challenges, this discussion will teach you everything you need to know to keep this special relationship special and beautiful for everyone involved. S12 Ep 309Most Commonly Asked IVF Questions
I get asked questions about IVF daily, from my patients and from those seeking treatment elsewhere in the United States and beyond. While the steps involved in IVF are generally the same, the factors to consider and the patient's needs are all unique. While I can't cover all scenarios in a single show (or blog post), I do want to recap some of the most common questions I get and answer some specific inquiries that were emailed to me. There's a chance you have the same question as someone else. Read all of the show notes on Dr. Aimee's website Do you have questions about IVF?Click here to join Dr. Aimee for The IVF Class. S12 Ep 308Why Didn't Your IUI Work?
One of the most common questions I get asked is "Why didn't my IUI work?" It's a great question because there are many factors that come into play with intrauterine insemination. If you're my patient, we'd start by checking the Fallopian tubes, uterus, and sperm quality first.⠀ But let's say you've done the #TUSHYcheck, the tubes are clear and everything else looks good. So why doesn't IUI work? The answer I share with my patients is: because you're human. Yes, it's really as simple as that. ⠀ To put IUI into perspective, 90% of the time it doesn't work. ⠀ So if your IUI didn't work, I want you to know that there's nothing wrong with you, and you're normal, and human. It's that simple.⠀ Read the full show notes on Dr. Aimee's website here. Do you have questions getting a diagnosis with the TUSHY Method and IVF?Join Dr. Aimee for the upcoming IVF Class. Whitney Bischoff Angel is joining me to talk all about Egg Freezing. Whitney is a fertility nurse and patient advocate at Ova: Egg Freezing Specialty Center specializing in fertility ppreservation for women. Whitney made the personal decision to freeze her own eggs in 2013, which she credits for making her an even stronger fertility nurse. She's appeared on ABC's Nightline, Good Morning America, Extra TV, People Magazine, Women's Health magazine and many other publications. Today we're covering 8 great reasons to freeze your eggs. These include helping your future self, how freezing eggs can be an insurance policy, the genetic reasons you may want to freeze your eggs, and why you might want to freeze your eggs even if you aren't sure if you want to have children or haven't found the right partner. I hope you'll tune in as we walk through all eight reasons. Thank you for joining me, Whitney! Read the full transcript on my website. S12 Ep 305What is IUI? History of IUI and Explanation of How IUI Works with guest Dr. Geoffrey Sher
Dr. Geoffrey Sher is back, and we are talking about Intrauterine Insemination, or IUI. In 1982, Dr. Sher and his colleagues were the first to wash sperm, and then put it through a centrifuge process. After an incubation period, they used a catheter to inject the sperm into the uterine cavity of a patient. He's a true pioneer, and this was the first time IUI had been done!. I know you will enjoy learning more about IUI from him. We're sharing about how IUI works, and why it's recommended for some patients. We also discuss the differences between IUI and IVF, and when you might pick one over the other. Read the whole show notes on my website. Visit Dr. Sher's website. S12 Ep 304This is Fertility Mythbusting
I do this with my patients all the time. There's a lot of truth-telling that goes on in my office, and often myth-busting is necessary to get to the truth. Perhaps you can relate — there are so many headlines and hearsay stories about fertility. Do you struggle to disseminate between what is evidence-based and what is not? I don't care where you live or who your doctor is. My goal is to share what I know in the event that it's even the tiniest bit helpful to you and your fertility journey. S12 Ep 2969 Things That Increase Your Risk of Infertility
If you know me, you know that I hate the word infertility. I believe that everyone who walks through my doors is fertile and no matter what we learn, can be a parent. They are: Your DNA Unhealthy BMI Abnormal Sleep Patterns Fibroids Endometriosis Blocked Fallopian Tubes Abnormal Semen Parameters Autoimmune Diseases Reproductive Toxins Want to hear more about each of them? Dr. Lessey has dedicated his research life to studying the lining of the uterus and more specifically, how to help embryos stick better. His research led to the discovery of the role of BCL-6 in the lining of the uterus as a diagnostic test patients can have done by their doctors to guide them toward the best protocol for transfer success. The test isn't for women just going through IVF either. This test can also be done to help women get an endometriosis diagnosis without going through a laparoscopy surgery. ⠀ ⠀ In addition to being a Fertility Doctor at The Fertility Center of the Carolinas, in Greenville SC, Dr. Lessey is also the scientific advisor for Cicero DX. His work on identifying BLC6 became the key component of the Receptivadx test. ⠀ ⠀ I'm delighted to have him on the show! Many IVF patients have benefited greatly from the Receptivadx test, and I'm looking forward to asking him a lot of questions about his work. S12 Ep 270How to Talk to Your Doctor About Fertility if You Are Over 40
Talking about your fertility when you're over 40 is not easy, but I want women to stop apologizing for desiring a family. Times have changed. It's okay to want a baby over 40. It's not crazy, nor selfish. My approach is for all of my patients to be given their best chance at a healthy pregnancy in the shortest period of time. How do we do this? It starts by not believing everything you read. There's an international headline I saw recently on BBC news that fertility doctors are exploiting older women and "dealing false hope". Do I believe that fertility doctors deliver false hope? No way! I do not. Do I believe that it's imperative to get a diagnosis before treatment, regardless of who you are and your age? Yes! Diagnosis before treatment. Please! I want my patients over 40 to understand their follicle count. Then I want them to decide if moving forward with treatment using their own eggs is the best path forward. There are so many ways to have a baby if your own body is not making it happen there are other creative paths to explore. Egg and embryo donation and adoption are a few examples. S12 Ep 269Treating Endometriosis-Related Infertility with guest Dr. Geoffrey Sher
It's a delight to have Dr. Geoffrey Sher back. He's been on the show several times, and our discussion on "How to Avoid Implantation Failure During IVF" is one of the most viewed on the channel! Today we're talking about treating Endometriosis - related infertility. Here are some facts about Endometriosis as shared by Dr. Sher: - Endometriosis is a condition where cells similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grow outside of the uterus, in the pelvic cavity. - It occurs in about 10% of all women and can be symptom free or may cause a wide spectrum of symptoms. - It's estimated that 25% - 40% of all female infertility is linked to endometriosis in some way. - Endometriosis is a life-long condition. It cannot be completely removed or cured. While endometriosis can usually be controlled (medically or surgically), the condition itself is not curable. - Removing endometriomas from an ovary may help with getting pregnant. Dr. Sher is also sharing information about how the endometrium begins to grow outside the uterus, and why some women remain asymptomatic, and others develop symptoms. S12 Ep 262Embryo Donation: One Doctor's Story with guest Dr. Paula Amato
In today's Egg Whisperer Show Podcast, I'm so excited to be joined by Dr. Paula Amato. She is a fertility specialist who froze embryos in her 30s using sperm from an anonymous donor. Later, Dr. Amato decided to donate her embryos. She shared about this journey and what she learned as a fertility doctor in a recent article published in Fertility and Sterility titled: "The fertile window: what donating my embryos taught me about being a fertility doctor." We're going to talk all about her decision to donate her embryos, what looking into the genetics of those embryos taught her, and what she learned from the process. It's an amazing story, and it's interesting to hear a fertility specialist talk about her experience as both a doctor, and a patient. Dr. Paula Amato is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, at the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine in Portland, Oregon. She also is a Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility Specialist and has over 33 years of experience in the medical field. S12 Ep 267Fertility Preservation Options for Cancer Patients w_ guest Tracy Weiss of The Chick Mission (Pt 2)
Today on the podcast, I'm sharing part two of a two part series of interviews with the founders of The Chick Mission which is a national foundation that is working together to preserve hope, sanity, and choice for women battling cancer. They are focused on making sure that all women diagnosed with cancer have the financial support, educational information, and legislative advocacy to preserve their fertility. After personal experiences, founders Amanda Rice and Tracy Weiss came together to make sure that all cancer patients have a full life with options to grow a family, after they beat the disease. Tracy Weiss is the Executive Director of Chick Mission. She is also a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with cancer at the age 30. Her insurance company denied her claim to preserve her fertility, describing it as an 'elective' procedure. Tracy partnered with Amanda to start The Chick Mission to help other women facing the same challenges. Read the article on Dr. Aimee's Website, and listen to both interviews. After personal experiences, founders Amanda Rice and Tracy Weiss came together to make sure that all cancer patients have a full life with options to grow a family. Today's interview is with Amanda Rice, who is the Founder and a 3-time Cancer Survivor. The Chick Mission hatched when Amanda's fertility preservation coverage was denied by her insurance company. After chemo, radiation and long-term drug therapy, she started fertility treatment. She's focused on helping other patients find ways to cover the costs of fertility preservation, as socioeconomic standing should not be a factor in anyone wanting to pursue having biological children after they are diagnosed with cancer.
