Tests, ODIs or T20s?
This week we record in the midst of the fourth day of the second test match between England and the West Indies. We discuss the fallout of Jofra Archer’s bio-secure bubble breach, Dom Sibley’s slow hundred to set up England’s innings and Stokes’ magnificent 176. DJ also gets quite grumpy about Dom Sibley’s backing up technique (find out more in the thread here: https://twitter.com/1tip1hand/status/1284120513976074240?s=21). Recording during the test match means we make some pretty awesome predictions! We then talk about which format of cricket is our favourite and the results of a recent Twitter poll in which test cricket got 70% of the vote, putting it well ahead of the other formats (see https://twitter.com/1tip1hand/status/1278646398532161538?s=21 and is test cricket dying? https://twitter.com/1tip1hand/status/1278646398532161538?s=21). Varun and Ashwin discuss the commercial aspects of test matches and the marketing of cricket (see link to article DJ mentions where test cricket is being used to save the Big Bash https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/29462879/adelaide-oval-prime-venue-bbl-no-10%3fplatform=amp). After the break we discuss the rules and regulations of 3T cricket, the trillion dollar question of how cricket should break into the American market (https://twitter.com/1tip1hand/status/1284152244468879369?s=21) and rumours of the return of our beloved Indian Premier League in the UAE later in the year (https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/29485966/ipl-2020-likely-played-uae-september-november).
Monty Panesar on Live Cricket Returns
Live cricket is finally back! In the first half of the show, Ashwin joins DJ as we discuss the big talking points from the West Indies win over England in the first test at Southampton - we cover it all, from the rainy restart to Black Lives Matter to Ben Stokes v Jason Holder to Tino Best v Archer to Jermaine Blackwood’s brilliant 95 in the chase. In the second half, Varun and DJ get the amazing chance to speak to English left arm spinner Monty Panesar. We talk about Monty’s Gujarati (?) roots, his early career and making it to play test cricket for England and taking Sachin Tendulkar as his first test wicket. We also talk about his batting in the famous Ashes test at Cardiff and beating India in India in 2012. Monty tells us some sledging stories and how he battled with mental health issues. We include a lot of listener questions. Guy Walker on IPL Gloat XI
This week we deal with the fall-out from the IPL GOAT XI episode as Varun (46%) gloats about his win over Ashwin (41%) and DJ (13%) in the Twitter poll pitting the podcasters teams against each other. We then move on to the keenly contested Listener IPL GOAT XI contest which was won by Ajinkya Patwardhan, who saw off very tough competition from Sreekar’s team. Congratulations Ajinkya! Test cricket is going to be back on our screens pretty soon with England playing the West Indies on 8 July so we are all looking forward to this. In the meantime, Pakistani players seem to playing COVID test roulette! The Boys Are Back in Town
The Edges & Sledes gang goes back to its roots. With no guests on this episode, it’s no holds barred! We start with an update on what’s been happening with us since Lockdown started. We talk a little about our favourite guests on the podcast, what we have missed/not missed about the show and also call out a couple of other podcasts (TPSE, Lessons Learnt and Cricket Zone). On a more sombre note, we discuss the Darren Sammy racism issue and the untimely passing of Sushant Singh Rajput. The second half is absolute mayhem when all of us of them pick our IPL GOAT XI with a limit of four overseas players. -Why is there no Universe Boss in Varun’s team? -Why does Ashwin pick Rohit Sharma and has Suresh Raina ever batted at 5? -Why are the Pandya brothers even being spoken of by DJ in the same breath as Russell and Dhoni? And why is there no MS Dhoni in DJ’s team? Things get heated and the banter is non-stop! Write in with your comments/objections/rants and let us know what you think of the idea of a live IPL draft. India's All Time Greatest Test and ODI XIs
DJ, Varun and Ashwin are back and in this age of no live cricket, they have given themselves the unenviable task of picking India’s all time greatest teams. The first half is all about the test game, whereas the second half is ODIs. The debate gets heated. Tough questions are asked including: -Why does DJ drop VVS Laxman from his test XI halfway through the show? -Why does R Ashwin make Varun’s GOAT XI but not play India's next test? -Why is Viru in the ODI GOAT XI for both Varun and Ashwin? -Does Bumrah make the cut in tests or ODIs? -Do all our podcasters have way too much recency bias? Each podcaster's teams are available at https://1tip1hand.com/cricket/indias-all-time-test-and-odi-xis/ Got a better team? Who makes your XI? Write in to us and let us know.

Gulu Ezekiel on Cricket in The Time of Coronavirus
DJ is joined this week by Varun and Ashwin, who are both recording from their Delhi home. First up Ashwin gives an update on Varun’s exploits in their gully cricket tournament (or lack thereof). They then discuss the various cricket cancellations this week and IPL 2020 being suspended/postponed by the BCCI because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Of course, Sanjay Manjrekar’s sacking from the BCCI commentary panel comes up - was there any political motivation behind the decision? Also a new Amazon Prime documentary called “The Test” is recommended with a focus on how the Aussies view King Kohli. The second half of the podcast is a great chat with Gulu Ezekiel, author and cricket journalist. On Gulu’s podcast debut, Gulu and DJ discuss his days of covering domestic cricket, the recent Ranji Trophy final (between Saurashtra and Bengal) and his favourite cricketer across the decades. They discuss the lead-up to the big day and how everything went wrong for Team India in a match that was watched by 86,174 people at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and by millions all over the world on International Women’s Day. They also analyse the team’s performance over the course of the tournament, including the positives to emerge for a young Indian team. The Hundred
It’s another full house this week with Varun, Ashwin and DJ as we raise our bat after scoring our maiden ton (the only century scored during the New Zealand v India test series!). It’s also our second year anniversary episode so we get excited, emotional and also a little nostalgic in turn. But there is work to be done so we discuss India’s disastrous 2-0 series loss against New Zealand (first series loss during the WTC). We go over the opportunities wasted by Indian batsmen in the first and second innings, poor use of the DRS and once again India’s inability to get the tail out hurting them in the final analysis. We also rant a little more about India’s intent problem and its selection and team management issues with a focus on Ishant’s injury and swapping Ashwin for Jadeja. We then wrap the series with our thoughts on Kohli’s intense press conference where he snaps at the reporter asking him about swearing at Kane Williamson and the Kiwi crowd. In the second half of the show we talk about our favourite century from childhood and the Women’s T20 World Cup where Team India has topped the group and will play the first semi final. Finally Ashwin hosts a quiz about centuries for Varun and DJ. Enjoy! Link to Kohli press conference https://twitter.com/1tip1hand/status/1234399095806185477?s=21

They also discuss Kyle Jamieson’s dream debut and try and analyse India’s inability to wipe out the tail. Finally, they all indulge in some crystal ball gazing into days 4 and 5 of the first test. The second half is a superb chat with Snehal Pradhan, ex-India cricketer and broadcaster who is currently in Australia covering the T20 world cup. Ashwin speaks to Snehal about her own cricketing journey, her role models and the growth of women’s cricket around the world. They discuss the favourites for the T20 crown and take a detailed look at Team India’s chances at the women’s T20 World Cup in Australia. Painful week for Indian fans
They say misery loves company, and so Ashwin is joined by DJ and Varun this week to discuss India's first series loss since the 2019 World Cup. They discuss the first ODI where the Indian bowlers had an off day allowing New Zeland to get 347 and also the second ODI where the Indian batsman failed to chase 274. They answer the big question on everyone's mind - is there any real cause for alarm? The podcasters then analyse the new opening combination of Mayank and Shaw, Rahul's middle order position, selection policy by the team management and the usual chit-chat about Kedar Jadhav's and Shardul Thakur's spot. The Saini and Jadeja partnership is also brought into the spotlight, with questions being asked afresh of Jadeja’s value. The second half of the podcast starts with the Bushfire fundraising cricket match between Ponting's XI and Gilchrist's XI and the dream match-up of Sachin Tendulkar batting against Ellyse Perry in the break. We then move on to the Indian Women making the triseries final Down Under after England women failed to qualify in the last match. Finally the show is rounded off by a quick discussion about the Under-19 World Cup final, which India was dominating at the time of recording through Bishnoi’s wickets. Listeners will of course know the result by the time the show is out - commiserations to our Indian boys and congratulations to Bangaldesh for winning their country’s first major world title.

The podcast really heats up as the Shardul Thakur situation is analysed at length and there is some debate on whether he deserves a spot in the side. They also discuss whether India’s bowling has become better at defending totals and look ahead to which players they think will make it into India’s WT20 squad for the tournament in Australia later this year.
