Cosmic Layers and Coaster Secrets: A Deep Dive into Session 235
Welcome to the cosmic lounge, everyone. Today we’re kicking back with some seriously deep insights from Session 235 of The Early Sessions Book 5 of the Seth Material, recorded on the evening of February 23, 1966. This session is a total vibe—it’s got everything from alien dreamscapes to the secret life of your ego, all wrapped up in a psychic experiment involving a beer coaster.
The "Alien" Landscapes of Your Mind
Seth starts things off by telling us to pay attention to those weird, "what-was-I-smoking" dreams. If you’ve ever seen a bizarre landscape or a person you’ve never met in your waking life, Seth says they aren't just "imaginative toys." They actually exist somewhere.
- Order vs. Chaos: Our egos are obsessed with "continuity of moments" (boring, right?). Because of this, we think our dreams are a "chaotic jumble."
- Subjective Association: In the probable universe system, order isn’t about time; it’s about intuitive flashes of insight and subjective associations.
- A Solid Reality: Seth reminds us that while we think our physical world is the only "real" one, other systems are just as concrete within their own fields.
Who is Running the Show? (Spoiler: Not just your Ego)
Seth drops some major knowledge on the structure of the self. Think of your personality like an onion, but way more interesting and less likely to make you cry.
- The Ego’s Limited Focus: "The ego is only one layer of the self that has self-consciousness. Being self-conscious, the ego attempts to be conscious only of itself. It necessitates boundaries."
- The Subconscious Extension: The subconscious is also self-conscious. It looks at your ego like a slightly out-of-control extension of itself.
- Self-Conscious Centers: There are multiple layers of the self that imagine they are the "center" of everything. They coexist but usually aren't aware of each other.
- The End Goal: "Progress in the development of personality in the long run will be determined by the ability of the whole self to recognize and become aware of all of its self-conscious portions."
The Psychic Beer Coaster Incident
During this session, Jane (Ruburt) performed a "double envelope" experiment. Rob (Joseph) put a red beer coaster inside, and Seth’s hits were hilariously specific:
- The Red Connection: Seth picked up on the bright red color of the coaster and its "blunted" edges.
- Grainy Puns: Seth mentioned a "connection with grassy land." It turned out to be a psychic pun referring to a guy named Rice (the grain!) who was at the dance hall where Rob found the coaster.
- Apron Strings: Seth brought up "apron strings," which referred to a conversation Rob had about a friend's toddler who wouldn't stop hanging on his mom’s apron strings.
- The Parking Lot: Seth even commented on "grading," which was a weirdly accurate reference to the dance hall’s recently paved parking lot.
Seth’s Parting Wisdom
Seth is basically teaching Jane how to be a better psychic receiver. He prefers a "light trance state" because it allows Jane to learn how to discriminate between her own associations and the actual data coming through.
