Session 209, November 17, 1965: The Dream Recording Vibe and Inner Travels
Grab a seat and get comfortable, because Seth is about to take us on a trip through the inner landscape.
The Big Project: Investigating Your Inner Self
Seth starts the night off by basically telling Jane (Ruburt) and Rob that they are now official investigators of consciousness. It’s not just about recording weird dreams anymore; it’s about a systematic probe into what makes us tick when we aren’t looking at the physical world.
- Dream Science: Seth wants the dream records to be "immaculately kept." He’s talking about a full-on bedroom setup with a recorder that you can operate in the dark like a pro.
- The Nutcracker Metaphor: Seth reminds us that you can’t just "crack open a nut" to see how a personality works. You have to experience it.
- Primary vs. Secondary: A recurring theme here is distinguishing between what’s a "primary" reality and what’s "secondary." Seth notes: "The investigation will always be concerned with the search for primaries and secondaries. On many occasions an apparent primary reality will later be seen to be secondary."
- The Ultimate Perk: If you stick with this training, Seth mentions you might get "recall of past lives" as a side benefit. Talk about a loyalty program!
How to Analyze Your Dreams Like a Boss
Seth isn't just looking for a plot summary of your dream where you forgot your pants at school. He wants the data. Here is what he suggests tracking:
- The specific location (or lack thereof).
- Movement through time within the dream.
- The "work" done while you're asleep.
- Seasonal variations—apparently, dreams change with the weather!
- The "dream space" itself and how to enlarge it.
Seth sums up the elusive nature of this work beautifully: "The dream experience is a living, moving action. To some extent it can never be captured, but we shall capture enough of it for our purposes."
Hypnosis and the "Freewheeling" Self
Seth drops some knowledge on hypnosis, and it’s way less "spooky stage magician" than you’d think.
- No Director Needed? While a director is usually necessary, Seth says the hypnotic state is just a level of awareness where you are "freewheeling."
- The Inner Ego: With enough training (we’re talking years, people), your "inner ego" can act as the director while you travel through other states of action.
- Stay in Control: The goal is to move through any state of consciousness and back again "safely, with full awareness of your identity."
Telepathy and Remote Viewing
Seth suggests a fun little "warming-up exercise" where you write down a message and try to send it to someone in your sleep. It’s like late-night texting but without the data charges.
He also performs a "Dr. Instream" test during the session, where he "sees" a man in a room with a high ceiling, holding a book from 1903 (or 1933) with a bamboo-colored bookmark. Seth even catches him being tired and saying, "Now see here, Seth, let's have something definite."
Final Thoughts and Credits
The session ends with a chill talk about how Jane and Rob could theoretically handle five sessions a week, but that would be "highly impractical" and Jane would probably rebel. Smart move, Jane.
