Session 190, September 21, 1965: The Night Seth Woke the Neighbors
This unscheduled session is a wild ride involving a guest, some accidental "spirit" comedy, and a very confused set of neighbors.
The Ultimate "Live" Performance
- The evening kicked off with Jane Roberts and Robert Butts hanging out with their friend, John Bradley. They were listening to a tape of a previous session (the 170th) to show off Seth’s booming voice.
- In a move that’s both chilling and hilarious, the real Seth decided he didn't want to be upstaged by a recording. He hijacked the moment, with Jane switching off the recorder mid-sentence.
- Seth’s opening line was pure gold: “Why settle for a recording when you can have the real thing?”
- Seth was described as being in "excellent spirits," jovial, and loud. Jane, in a deep trance, was on her knees before the recorder when the transition happened, and the energy was so seamless that the guys didn't realize it wasn't the tape for a moment.
Career Coaching and Cosmopolitan Needs
- John Bradley was debating a major life change—quitting his job at Searle Drug to buy a restaurant and bar back home in Williamsport, PA.
- Seth, playing the role of a cosmic career counselor, was skeptical. He noted John’s deep-seated need for family security and "cosmopolitan outlets" that his current sales job provided but a settled bar-owner life might not.
- Seth predicted no major shifts at Searle Drug until at least February and told John the restaurant venture would only succeed if he actually followed through on the purchase.
- Seth basically told John to stop worrying about others doing the work for him, regarding finding a typist: “The effort will do you good.”
The Mystery of the "Bad Tongue"
- John brought up a weird medical mystery from June 1964—a sharp pain in his throat.
- Seth dropped some anatomical truth bombs, explaining it was actually a "bad tongue." Apparently, John had cut his tongue on a bone sliver while eating.
- Because human nerve structures are a bit of a maze, the pain was felt down in the neck rather than the tongue itself. Seth revealed he was the "thunderous voice" that had previously tried to tell Jane about this incident during a psychological time experiment.
Seth Slaps Back: The Proof Problem
- When John asked for "proof" of Seth’s existence, Seth wasn't having it.
- He "lit into him," arguing that the vocal effects Jane was producing were physically impossible for her normal makeup.
- In a classic move of wit, Seth turned the tables, stating he could just as easily demand that John prove his own existence.
The Great Neighbor Intervention
- The session got so loud that Jane was physically active, standing up and tipping her head back to get more power for the Seth voice.
- The volume was "startling." It was a hot, humid night with the windows open, and the voice carried seventy feet over to the neighbors' house.
- Donna and Ed Taylor eventually knocked on the door, worried that Jane and Rob were in trouble. They had checked eight TV stations trying to find where that massive voice was coming from.
- To avoid a three-hour explanation of metaphysical channeling, Rob told them it was a "self-hypnosis experiment" for Jane’s next book. The Taylors bought it, their cat played with the Butts' cat (Willy), and the "trance" was officially broken by 11:20 PM.
