Insights from Session 186: Chill Out and Sketch Some Rivers

This briefing covers the vibes and wisdom from Session 186 of The Early Sessions Book 4 of the Seth Material, recorded on September 8, 1965. Grab a drink, kick back, and let’s dive into why pushing yourself too hard is basically a psychic buzzkill.

The "Magical" Hay Fever Hack

Before the session even got rolling, Robert noted some seriously cool results from Seth’s health tips.

  • Robert had been struggling with a rough hay fever season, but after using Seth’s method of "suggestion upon retiring at night," things got "magical."
  • He went from sneezing constantly to only five times a day and was able to drastically cut back on his meds.
  • The big takeaway? Suggestions given right before you drift off to sleep are incredibly potent. Your subconscious is basically a sponge at that hour.

The Ego is a Bad Boss

The main vibe of this session was Seth telling Jane (whom he calls Ruburt) to take a massive chill pill. Jane had just finished her ESP book and was frantically trying to force her next big idea.

  • The Ego Whip: Seth pointed out that Jane’s ego was essentially whipping her to keep working when she actually needed to recharge.
  • Inspiration's Source: Seth noted that "inspiration does not come from the ego." If you’re trying to force it, you’re doing it wrong.
  • The Tight Clamp: As Seth put it: "Since he finished his ego has held him in a tight clamp. After the psychic excitement and effort and discipline involved in the venture of the book, there simply must be a complete relaxation, a letting go."
  • Observation over Brooding: Seth encouraged finding "daily joy" in just looking at the world rather than obsessing over work.

Seth’s Prescription for Burnout

Seth didn't just say "relax"; he gave a specific "to-do" list for doing absolutely nothing productive.

  • The Deadline: No writing or record-keeping until the following Monday at the earliest.
  • Activities: Puttering around the apartment, visiting friends, painting, reading, or walking.
  • The Riverbank Vibe: He specifically suggested Jane go sketch at the riverbanks to refresh her spirit.
  • Changing Environment: Physically getting out of the house is key to switching the conscious focus.
  • The Quote: "He has forgotten the daily joy that comes through simple observation of the day. I here suggest most strongly that until the following Monday at the earliest, he does not work at his writing or his records..."

The "Stamps in an Envelope" Psychic Test

Robert tried to sneak in a little test involving a collection of used U.S. postage stamps hidden in double envelopes. Even though Jane wasn't feeling 100%, Seth took a crack at it.

  • The Hits: Seth picked up on "tall parallel lines" and "horizontal parallel lines," which Robert later realized matched the wavy cancellation marks on the stamps.
  • The Impressions: Seth mentioned a scene with people, "something splendid," and the number 36 (which happened to be Jane's age).
  • The Misses: He mentioned water and a tavern, which Robert couldn't quite find a match for on the stamps themselves, though they might have been "attached" to the objects.
  • The Telepathy Factor: Seth admitted he knew a test was prepared because he picked it up telepathically from Robert once the session started.
