Insights from the Beyond: Session 184
Session 184, recorded on the night of September 3, 1965, is an unscheduled, late-night hangout featured Jane Roberts (Ruburt), Rob Butts (Joseph), and their friends Bill and Peggy Gallagher. It’s got everything: psychic envelope tests, advice on ulcers, and even some gossip about flying saucers.
The First "Public" Envelope Test
Jane had some free time after mailing her ESP book, so Seth decided to show off a bit in front of witnesses. Rob prepared a double envelope containing a "multiplicitude of design"—basically an abstract pen drawing of blocks.
- The Hits: Seth nailed the "color gray" (created by Rob’s shading) and mentioned the numbers 3 and 7. Rob later realized the drawing had a group of 7 blocks on the right and 3 on the left.
- The Neighborhood Drama: Seth mentioned a "road" and an "unpleasant circumstance" involving a woman. It turns out the "road" was a symbol for their neighbor, a traveling salesman whose visit (with his wife) had cancelled the previous session.
- Seth’s Take: Seth admitted to a bit of a "misunderstanding" rather than a distortion, saying: "The road was a distortion, but only superficially, for it was meant as a symbol to describe the man involved, and I could not get Ruburt to say salesman."
Health, Wealth, and Parental Guidance
Seth didn’t just talk to the "spooks"; he had some very grounded (and slightly sassy) advice for the humans in the room.
- Hay Fever and House Dust: Seth told Rob his hay fever was acting up because the apartment dust reminded him of his childhood home and his mother.
- The Ulcer Report: Seth told Bill Gallagher that if he studied the material on how matter is constructed, he could be rid of his ulcer within a year. The catch? It requires discipline.
- Time Management: Seth chirped Bill for "chopping time up into segments of minutes," suggesting that a more "psychological" view of time would make his day feel much longer.
- Parental Love: Seth noted that Rob’s parents needed "unquestioning love," but Rob shouldn't feel guilty about being unable to provide it yet.
Computers and Flying Saucers
Seth took a break from personal advice to drop some heavy knowledge on the future of humanity.
- The Computer Revolution: Seth predicted computers would "transform human life" but warned that people with a "salesman’s personality" might use them to feel power over others.
- UFOs are Real: Seth confirmed that flying saucers exist. He called the government’s refusal to admit it "pitiable" but noted they are trying to prevent a panic that would weirdly unite far-left and far-right groups.
- The Denmark Connection: We found out that Bill Gallagher was once a sailor named Mark in 1600s Denmark, complete with a large angel tattoo on his chest for good luck.
Professional Predictions and Warnings
Jane tried a new trick: asking Seth a question as herself while in trance. She asked if Cosmopolitan magazine would buy excerpts from her ESP book.
- The Cosmo Verdict: Seth said the editors would be interested and eventually buy it, though they’d ask for changes first.
- Literary Success: Seth reminded Jane that she’s "pulling her weight psychically" and that money would follow her short story sales.
- A Warning for Leonard: Seth dropped a "disquieting" prediction for their neighbor, Leonard Yaudes, suggesting an "unpleasantness" or accident might happen between September 15 and October 15.
