Session 174: Dreamscapes, Stock Tips, and Cosmic Juggling

The Vibe Check on Physical Reality

Seth opens the session by basically telling humanity to chill out and realize we are way too obsessed with the physical world. While we’ve done a great job organizing our "stuff," we’re missing out on the bigger picture because we’re staring too hard at the 3D screen.

  • Fragmentary Perception: Humans usually only get "infrequent glimpses" of other realities. Because these glimpses are so messy and disorganized, we can’t see the "total conception" of how things actually work.
  • The Dream Meeting Ground: The dream world is the closest reality to our physical one. Seth describes it as a "meeting ground between psychic and physical existence."
  • Permanent Atoms: Believe it or not, the dream universe is just as permanent as our waking one. It’s made of atoms and molecules too, just from a different perspective and with way more "inner logic" and freedom of action.
  • Juggling Realities: Seth notes that "You are involved in a juggling of realities." To see the whole personality, you have to look at how it operates in both waking and sleeping states.

Intellect vs. Intuition

Seth points out that while the intellect is great for translating data so the ego doesn't freak out, it’s not the tool for exploring dreams.

  • The Source: Intuition is what gets us close to the source. "The intuitions must go hand in hand with the intellect," Seth explains.
  • Man is More: Seth drops a classic truth bomb: "Man is indeed his intellect, but he is much else besides."

Pro-Tips for Dream Investigators

The session provides some cosmic homework for anyone wanting to level up their dream game.

  • Pre-Sleep Suggestions: You can literally tell yourself to remember dreams from "deeper levels" or to pay attention to how time and space work while you’re under.
  • The Inner Ego: This part of you is totally capable of handling both worlds. It listens to your suggestions and acts on them while you’re catching Z’s.
  • Focus Shifting: Learning to change your focus of awareness is highly beneficial. You don't even need to be asleep to dream—daydreams are just a "clearer" version of this focus shift.

Dream Therapy: The Ultimate Sandbox

One of the wildest parts of this session is the discussion on dream therapy. Seth suggests that dreams could be used to solve big psychological problems without anyone getting hurt in the "real" world.

  • Harmless Aggression: People with aggressive tendencies could be suggested to act them out "harmlessly" in dreams. Since the personality doesn't really differentiate between waking and sleeping experiences in terms of significance, the release is real, but the victim isn't.
  • Dream Wars: Seth indulges in a "fantasy" where nations could fight wars in their sleep instead of on a physical battlefield. While there would still be repercussions, it would be way less disastrous than physical combat.
  • Avoided Illness: Proper dream therapy could help avoid both psychological and physical illnesses by clearing out "clogged" emotional channels.

The Side Quests: Stocks and Tapes

The notes of the session also mention some ground-level details:

  • Stock Watch: Seth previously predicted John Bradley’s company stock (G. D. Searle) would dip before recovering. The notes show it hit a low of 50 1/2 on July 29 before creeping back up.
  • Dr. Instream: A tape of session 170 was returned by Dr. Instream, transferred to a new reel, confirming Seth’s previous "hunch" that he had played it.
