Session 160: Inside-Out Reality and the Ego’s Drama
Welcome to a deep dive into the cosmic mechanics of the universe, specifically from Session 160 of The Early Sessions Book 4 of the Seth Material, recorded on the evening of June 7, 1965. Grab a drink, kick back, and let’s explore how we actually build this wild ride we call physical reality.
Spontaneous Vibes and Cosmic Consent
- Seth kicks things off by talking about those "spontaneous sessions" that happen outside the regular schedule. He’s basically saying that when the "emotional climate" is just right and Ruburt (Jane) is in a top-tier trance, they can get a lot of work done.
- He’s a polite guest, though. Seth mentions he won’t just barge in without consent. He follows conscious or subconscious wishes. If you're really not feeling it and say so out loud, he’s not going to show up and ruin the vibe.
Building the Body from the Inside Out
- Forget what you think you know about biology; Seth says the physical image is constructed from the inside out. The inner self is like a master architect trying to match the physical body to its own "self-image."
- If there are "errors of construction"—like mutant genes or organic distortions—don't blame the inner self. Those glitches come from the ego or the personal subconscious.
- Seth explains that "suggestion" is really just "expectation." As he puts it: "The inner self attempts to construct a physical image in line with its own self-image. Any errors of construction have their origin not in the inner self, but in either the personal subconscious or in the ego."
The Truth About "Negative Suggestion"
- Seth gets pretty deep into what we call "negative suggestions." He views them as symptoms of an energy block that has already happened.
- Think of them as "dead eddies" in the water—motion that doesn't actually go anywhere. A negative suggestion only gets acted upon if there’s already a rift in your inner energy flow.
- Seth’s take is quite poetic: "What you call negative suggestions... represent dead eddies, the motion that means nothing in dead waters. They are impeding actions."
The Ego: The Self-Appointed Autocrat
- The ego often tries to act like an "autocrat" or a "willful" boss, attempting to stand apart from action to feel stable. Spoiler alert: It can’t.
- This "apartness" is an illusion. When the ego gets too overbearing and blocks emotional expression out of fear, things get messy.
- Seth notes that emotions aren't the enemy; they are actually "natural controlling devices" that help keep the system disciplined. When you dam them up, you get the "explosive barrages" and illnesses.
- To keep things running smoothly, Ruburt is advised to suggest before sleep that the system continues its "healthful and natural cooperation." Simple, but effective.
Parting Words and Traffic Noise
- Jane was dealing with some heavy traffic noise during this session, but Seth eventually helped her tune it out.
- He ended the night with a bit of humor for Joseph (Robert), suggesting that until he masters the art of ignoring unwanted parts of reality, he could always "stuff [his] ears with cotton."
