Cosmic Mechanics and Ego Elasticity: Insights from Session 156

Welcome back to another deep dive into the cosmic neighborhood. Today, we’re looking at Session 156 of The Early Sessions, Book 4 of the Seth Material, recorded on May 19, 1965. Seth kicks things off by calling everyone "springtime robins," though he cheekily notes that neither Jane (Ruburt) nor Rob (Joseph) are quite plump or melodious enough for the title.

This session captures a celebratory vibe because Jane finally signed her book contract—something Seth predicted months earlier. Between the "I told you so's," Seth drops some heavy knowledge on how reality actually functions.

The Physics of Action

Seth explains that action isn't just something that happens; it’s the fundamental stuff of the universe. It is self-generating and impossible to stop once it’s in motion.

  • No "Off" Switch: Action acts upon itself. You can’t withdraw it or hold it back. As Seth puts it: "Energy cannot be retained. It must be discharged. The very attempt to deny an action automatically changes the nature of the action."
  • Materialization: Every bit of energy is essentially looking for a way to show up in the physical world. Seth sums it up perfectly: "All energy seeks to materialize itself, which is another way of saying that action must act."
  • Repression is a Myth: You can't actually bottle up an emotion. The emotion will find a way out eventually; the "blockage" is just the ego wasting energy trying (and failing) to build a wall.

The Ego: A Collection of Functions

Seth paints a hilarious and insightful picture of the ego. It’s not a solid thing; it’s more like a "director" that’s actually made up of the very actions it tries to control.

  • The Identity Paradox: The ego hates change but literally can’t exist without it. Seth notes: "The ego, while disliking change, is nevertheless dependent for its identity upon change."
  • The Picky Eater: The ego chooses certain actions to be "part of itself" and rejects others. The drama starts when the ego decides an emotion it used to like is now "unacceptable." This leads to the ego fighting itself.
  • Expansion is the Goal: Originally, the ego had to be rigid to survive. Now that it’s stable, it needs to loosen up and communicate with the subconscious. Seth suggests that the ego can actually become aware of other realities if it just relaxes its "objective focus."

Psychological Architecture

If you think thoughts and emotions are just "airy-fairy" things, Seth has news for you. They have actual structure.

  • Invisible Structures: Emotions have electrical and chemical validity. They have shape and "electrical validity," even if they don’t take up physical space.
  • Dream Balling: Seth uses a great analogy: if you toss a ball in a dream, neither you nor the ball exist in physical space, yet the action is real. Psychological structures are handled the same way.
  • Infinite Dimensions: While we get hung up on the 5th dimension, Seth reminds us it's just one in an infinite series of patterns that action can form.

Closing Thoughts and Credits

The session wraps with Seth giving Jane the green light to return to her morning "psychological time" routine—but keeping it to a strict 20-minute limit.
