Insights from Seth Material: Session 48
Session 48 of The Early Sessions, Book 2, part of the Seth Material, recorded on April 27, 1964, provides a detailed exploration of out-of-body "journeying," its methods, its relationship to psychological time, and its connection to the experience of death.
The Phenomenon of "Journeying"
The session centers on an experience by Robert Butts (Joseph), which Seth identifies as a form of astral projection or "journeying." Seth congratulates him, stating, "Your experience this evening represents a journeying, and I offer you my congratulations... We are only at the threshold." This event serves as a launchpad for a deeper discussion on developing and validating such abilities. Seth advises that to prove the validity of these experiences, the traveler should attempt to make contact with people they encounter, give their name and address, and ask to be contacted in return.
Two Methods of Projection
Seth outlines two distinct methods by which this form of travel occurs:
- Personality-Essence Travel: The consciousness or "personality-essence" moves through what Seth calls "camouflage space and time." In this state, the traveler is not physically visible, and any contact made with another person would be purely telepathic.
- Secondary Camouflage Body: A more complex method involving a "diffusion of energies" where a secondary, partially or fully materialized body appears in a new location while the original physical body remains in place. This duplicate can appear completely normal, enabling physical interaction and conversation with observers.
Overcoming Beliefs in Time and Space
Seth emphasizes that the primary obstacle to mastering these abilities is the deeply ingrained belief in the reality of physical time and space. He describes them as "camouflages" and explains that true travel is not a journey between two points but a "transformation of energy from one location simultaneously to another location." To achieve this requires an "emotional and psychic leap" and a suspension of conventional logic.
The difficulty lies in the psyche's attachment to these concepts. "The reason that these things are done so infrequently is because the personality-essence finds itself so unable to give up belief in camouflage time and space." Advanced practitioners, Seth suggests, might even be able to bring back a physical object from a visited location as definitive proof.
Psychological Time and the Nature of Death
The session directly links the practice of "psychological time" to understanding fundamental reality and demystifying death. Seth explains that this state, where linear time is suspended, is very close to the non-physical environment he exists in. Regular practice can prepare the conscious ego for the transition of death.
"The use of psychological time will make the experience of death much less frightening. You will already have learned to recognize the spacious present for what it is..." Seth notes that just before death, perception of this "spacious present" begins, but the ego, tied to its past, often resists this shift and chooses to "hide in the past."
