Show Notes

Session 30, unscheduled and recorded on the evening of Thursday, February 27, 1964, centers on practical, yet psychically significant, advice regarding the living arrangements of the channel, Jane Roberts (referred to as "Ruburt"), and her husband, Robert Butts (referred to as "Joseph").

The session was precipitated by Seth's sudden awareness of a domestic situation he found both unsanitary and psychically detrimental: the placement of the couple's large refrigerator in their bathroom. Jane Roberts had received "flashes" from Seth on the matter throughout the day and resisted the idea, concerned that her own subconscious was using the Seth persona to address a problem they should solve themselves. Seth initiated this brief, informal session to formalize his suggestion and explain its importance.

Core Issue: The Refrigerator and Psychic Hygiene

The central theme of this session is the critical importance of maintaining distinct functional areas within a living space for both physical and psychic well-being. Seth's primary concern is the couple's arrangement of having their main refrigerator in a large, ornate bathroom due to a very small kitchen.

Seth's Argument for Relocation

Seth frames his advice not as a mere household preference but as a necessary correction for health. He states that storing food in a "cleansing center" like a bathroom is fundamentally wrong.

Seth acknowledges the seemingly mundane and "ludicrous" nature of his involvement in their domestic habits. However, he justifies it by stating his goal is to establish a beneficial environment for them, thereby preventing future "psychic difficulties and even physical ills" and obviating the need for constant minor adjustments.

The Principle of Functional Space Division

Beyond the specific issue of the refrigerator, Seth introduces a broader principle regarding the organization of one's environment. He argues that living spaces must be clearly separated according to their purpose to avoid the "entanglement of psychic energies."

Cleansing Area (Bathroom)

Should be a place of cleansing and rest; food should not be allowed in this room.

Seth explains that he delayed making such practical suggestions until a mutual trust had been established between himself and the couple. He assures them that he does not intend to continually interfere with furniture moving but is instead trying to set them up in the "most beneficial ways possible" from the outset.
