Session 17 of The Early Sessions, Book 1 of the Seth Material was recorded on the evening of Monday, January 20, 1964. The session, which lasted over three hours, delves into the nature of consciousness, the mechanics of personality, and offers detailed personal guidance for the session's participants, Jane Roberts (referred to by Seth as "Ruburt") and her husband, Robert Butts ("Joseph").
The Nature of the Session and Jane's Mediumship
The session notes provide insight into Jane Roberts's evolving process of receiving Seth's communications. It is noted that she no longer hears the words internally before speaking them, but rather "talks along without knowing consciously what she will say from one word to the next." This process occurred while she paced, speaking in a voice described as "somewhat louder and deeper than usual." Jane reported feeling Seth "pushing at her" to begin the session and continued to receive phrases from him even after its formal conclusion.
