Show Notes

Why do we do things over and over again, even though we tell ourselves that we are going to do things differently?  Why is it so hard to make changes that we know we want to make?  In this episode I dive into another of Freud’s concepts; the compulsion to repeat.  By looking at the theory and applying it to what we are doing in our own lives we can start to get a bit more of that elusive control back.  And there’s a nod to Cabaret and Depeche Mode too – what’s not to like?

Here are the highlights for this episode:

(1.30) Einstein’s definition of insanity

(3.18) Return of the repressed

(3.55) The reality principle

(5.11) The compulsion to repeat is a way of gaining mastery

(8.50) Let’s give ourselves some grace
