On this episode, I Zoom in Dr. Fecich and we chat about her book, Edumagic. I like to think of myself as a "Game Changer" (KTI 2017) in the field of higher education and educational technology. I am a professor at Grove City College, where I teach undergraduate pre-service education majors about the beauties of educational technology. I enjoy taking preservice teachers to educational workshops, events, and conferences to attend and present. It is a great way to network and build your professional learning community. I earned my Ph.D. from Penn State in Learning, Design, and Technology. But before my travels to PSU, I taught students with special needs for four years. I taught for two years as a teacher for students who were diagnosed with multiple disabilities and for two years as a technology integration teacher. My expertise is in assistive technology, specifically in augmented and alternative communication. I have experience consulting, evaluating, and training students, parents, teachers, and other professionals regarding AT and AAC devices. I enjoy going to flea markets, collecting pinball machines (my husband fixes them and I play them), baking (I make an awesome chocolate truffle), working out, and spending time with my family. As an education writer for local publications, she creates content that spotlights the successes of underserved populations. She is also a contributing writer and editorial staffer for a faith-based magazine, generating content geared toward influencers and leadership in the faith community. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communications from Fairleigh Dickinson University and earned a professional certification in digital media and marketing from Duke University School of Continuing Studies. All while working locally and serving globally, in October 2017 she traveled to Mombasa, Kenya (East Africa) on an education mission journey to provide school supplies and hygiene products to elementary school students. While there she was a featured speaker at the Girls Power Summit where she highlighted the importance of education and persevering in their career choice. Previously she served as the spokesperson for the American Red Cross and responded to several disasters, including a five-day hostage standoff. During September 11th, she responded to the United Airlines flight 93 aviation disaster in Shanksville, Pennsylvania where she was part of a specialized public affairs team trained to respond to local and national media outlets. She also coached bereaved family members to respond to media personnel, appropriately. A native of New Jersey, Ruth enjoys traveling internationally and domestically and sharing quality time with family and friends. Mellon dissertation fellowship which she completed a comparative study on Chicana/o and Puerto Rican college-educated families to advance narratives of intergenerational achievement and college readiness. As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania she was engaged with RISE (Research, Integration, Strategies, and Evaluation) for boys and men of color which is a field advancement effort to understand and strategically improve the lives, experiences, and outcomes of these populations. Dr. Garcia collaboratively built an online repository of data disaggregated by race, ethnicity, and sex spanning five fields (education, health, human services and social policy, juvenile and criminal justice, and workforce development). She employs mixed methods to examine inaccurate portrayals of educational outcomes for communities of color. In doing so, institutions of higher education can plan appropriate programs and evidence-based interventions to meet the growing needs of students. She received her PhD in Social Science and Comparative Education with a specialization in Race and Ethnic Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles. Courtney founded Unique Sisters in January 2015 and is currently supporting 25 girls from surrounding Metro Detroit communities. Courtney’s passion has always lied within youth development services believing in the power of young people. Holding close to a decade worth of experience in k-12 education in Detroit Public Schools Community District as a student intervention data analyst she understands the importance of academic success in urban communities. Upon developing Unique Sisters she designed and implements their “Four Pillars of Success” curriculum that is targeted towards social-emotional support. Their organizational values of “Self-Awareness, Community Engagement, Academic Preparation, and Family Engagement” carries their work throughout the Metro Detroit community. As she encourages her girls to “Reach For The World” she knows it takes a village to support the mission of Unique Sisters. She has built successful corporate partnerships and community network support from Starbucks Coffee Foundation, dPOP! at Quicken Loans, Michigan State University, DROUGHT Juice, Enjoy Detroit, and many more community organizations.
