James R. Doty, M.D. is a professor of neurosurgery and the founder and director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University of which His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the founding benefactor. He studies the neuroscience of compassion and the value proposition of such behaviors. He is the senior editor of the Oxford Handbook of Compassion Science. Dr. Doty is also an inventor, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He has patents that are used on patients around the world. As an entrepreneur he is the former CEO of Accuray developer of the CyberKnife, a radiosurgery technology, used on every continent to treat solid cancers and other lesions on patients. He is the author of the New York Times and international bestseller, Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discovery the Mysteries of the brain and the Secrets of the Heart which is now available in over 40 languages and editions.
