Ep 108108: See who your followers are at their core with India Jackson from Flaunt Your Fire

Episode 108. "We will get through this. It does require being innovative. It does require, you know, really, really being clear about what you want. But that's a beautiful thing because it allows you to focus on only that and not what you were told you should want." ~India Jackson, brand, marketing & visibility specialist India Jackson is in the business of giving companies and solo entrepreneurs permission to be themselves. As CEO of brand agency Flaunt Your Fire and host of a podcast by the same name, India busts people out of their marketing ruts by providing strategies to connect their inner motivations with their brand's external actions. "Visibility," says India, "is a two-way street." Without proper guidance, the vital connection between brand and audience can get wobbly. And that's during the best of times. Throw in a pandemic (a recession! social crisis!) and suddenly the entire foundation crumbles under fuzzy social media goals or tepid convictions or engagement oversights. As dire as these issues seem, they're fixable if the entity in question is willing to go deep. "Creating a connected community is a lot easier when you're able to go beyond the surface." India's got tips to help us get started with tweaking our message or embarking on full scale introspective brand analysis, including simple tactical upgrades to try like a brilliant IG hack for keeping track of connections! Right now, the universe seems to be sending us a clear message: Now is the time to transform the brand/audience relationship. India's expertise can help us turn prefab monologues into meaningful conversations. P.S. India also co-hosts and co-facilitates Pause on the Play podcast & community with Erica Courdae from episode 106 -- Collaborate with other leaders in a safe space to support diversity, equity + inclusion with intention.. Ep 107107: Special Recommendations for Creatives Right Now

Episode 107. I didn't have the words so I'm borrowing these shared by community members in She Podcasts. We stand with our sisters from the WOC Podcasters led by Danielle Desir and crafted by Tangia Renee. Their words below: PODCASTERS FOR JUSTICE CAMPAIGN Collectively, we have built engaged audiences that listen to our voices regularly, and with coordinated effort, we can combine OUR voices to take a STRONG stance against racism and police brutality. We serve many audiences, but we can speak with one voice. One voice that does not mince words and demands justice. We created this simple PSA for podcasters or any content creator to post and share in hopes that we can come together across digital spaces to support the work of activists on the front lines of change, who risk themselves daily to create a better world for us all. Please join us in using your voice to take a stand and encourage action at this critical time by issuing the following statement on your podcast or other digital platform(s): We are (podcasters/bloggers/youtubers/influencer/etc.) united to condemn the tragic murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and many many others at the hands of police. This is a continuation of the systemic racism pervasive in our country since its inception and we are committed to standing against racism in all its forms. We believe that to be silent is to be complicit. We believe that Black lives matter. We believe that Black lives are more important than property. We believe that we have a responsibility to use our platforms to speak out against this injustice whenever and wherever we are witness to it. In creating digital media we have built audiences that return week after week to hear our voices and we will use our voices to speak against anti-blackness and police brutality, and we encourage our audiences to be educated, engaged, and to take action. Suggested Action Steps 1. Read this statement on your next show release and post the above statement and graphic to your social media feeds. (You can get the graphic from me in the show notes at http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/107) 2. Ep 106106: Allow space to simply connect with people with Erica Courdae, diversity, equity, inclusion consultant

Episode 106. "Community is even more so important when people do feel disconnected physically. So it's still important to be able to figure out -- we are now virtual and even any of the in-person components are now kind of shifted -- So how can we make sure that nobody feels as though they're not included?" ~Erica Courdae, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Consultant Everything I knew about structure I've had to reframe, reexamine, re...structure over the last 5,000 weeks of shelter-in-place. Multiple times. There have been days in which my professional systems and personal habits have operated at next-level peakness*. Glorious stretches of productivity. Seemingly boundless hours high-vibiness*. And then… The inevitable at-capacity crash. Chances are, you've wandered around in that fog yourself. Multiple times throughout the pandemic's never-endingness*. Erica Courdae is a Baltimore-based, multitalented mother and entrepreneur who's navigating the deep end of uncertainty with realistic optimism and structures-in-progress (rather than hyper-aspirational, GOOPiness). As a salon owner, creator of the podcast Pause on the Play, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) consultant she's feeling her way through the process of managing professional and personal expectations. What does "safety" look like IRL for a salon owner? How does a DEI consultant convey her message in an exclusively virtual environment? What the heck does homeschooling a kindergartner and a second-grader look like? How does self-care exist now that outlets for simple pleasures are off-limits? *terms created to mildly amuse in week 5,000 of lockdown - it's come to this. Ep 105105: Increase your visibility with Nicole Otchy, personal sytlist and branding consultant

Episode 105. "Getting dressed is a conversation with ourselves before it's a conversation with anybody else." ~Nicole Otchy, personal stylist, branding consultant, podcaster What's your wardrobe style? That question can short circuit the finely-tuned minds of otherwise competent people. Throw in a pandemic with its whiplash-inducing pivot to online all the time meetings or events and you've got a recipe for closet calamity. Performed without context, all the recent Kondo-izing or late-night online buying binges can add up to a closetful of clothes but no strategy for creating outfits that project a sense of the person behind the brand. Enter Nicole Otchy, personal stylist, personal branding consultant, and host of The Self Styled Podcast, a show helping listeners unlock their personal style. Yes, before you say anything, it's Nicole's firm belief that everyone has style. Things get complicated, however, when confidence gets hijacked by chatter. Conversations around how women "should" dress are mired in all sorts of "rules" - for our body type, our age, our career path or industry. Everything's changed, seemingly overnight, and dressing can be an act of self-care right now. As the world shakes off its layers of pandemic pajamas, however, greater emphasis will be placed on virtual professional events and entirely revamped careers. Nicole also foresees drastic shifts in shopping habits and as well as a greater emphasis on societal wellbeing. In other words, if you haven't given style much thought, now might be a great time to revisit how you intend to style yourself and your brand for the future. Ep 104104: Change the systems that aren't working with Sarah Buino

Episode 104. "I will just reiterate to be kind to yourself and let's not continue to do grind culture right now. We don't have to be productive. And if you're not productive right now, you're doing it right." ~Sarah Buino, therapist, podcaster, speaker, founder Head/Heart Therapy Ready for some virtual therapy? Truthfully, I'm casting a side-eyed glance toward anyone who, at this point in the pandemic, answers, "Nah. I'm fine." And this is why I'm not a therapist. But returning guest Sarah Buino, LCSW, CADC, CDWF, is and she's here to say it's fine if you're fine...for now. Whatever you need to do to support your mental health, to save your business, to care for your family, to get through these weird, exhausting days (weeks, months), is exactly what you should be doing. As a fellow content creator and podcast royalty in her field, Sarah's life on the other side of the mic hasn't changed all that much. At Conversations With a Wounded Healer, she continues to connect with practitioners of various modalities, discussing the parallel paths of healing the self while caring for clients. As host of Transforming Trauma, a podcast produced by The NARM Training Institute, she finds no shortage of topics to explore within the world of complex trauma. As the owner of Head/Heart Therapy, however, Sarah's on the frontlines of the tele-health battlefield. Given the haphazard response to the pandemic by some of our institutions (looking at you, health insurance, banks), she's cautiously optimistic that the masses will galvanize, especially around the subject of tele-health, and change is gonna bleepin' come! Until then, how about some tips from Sarah for preserving our mental health and a delicious smoothie recipe? Ep 103103: Pitch your true self with Cher Hale, Ginkgo PR

Episode 103. "People are very reticent to pitch themselves... Don't let the fear of rejection hold you back from putting yourself out there when you know you can be helpful -- when you really feel that inside of you." ~Cher Hale, director and founder at Ginkgo Public Relations Raise your hand if you've experienced a new wave of creator impostor symptoms since shelter-in-place orders began. You're not alone. When crisis strikes - world-wide and well outside our control - the brain turns up the volume on negative self-talk, making it next to impossible to pitch ourselves. We wonder about our ability to serve our communities. We downplay our hard-fought experience. We worry about appearing insensitive. Stop it. Cher Hale, owner of Ginkgo Public Relations, says your message still matters - now more than ever. Her advice for confused creative imposters? Stay in your lane no matter how compelling a similar creative's 180º pivot appears. Whether that means shifting to daily Facebook Live postings or putting your business on pause, stay genuine. Ultimately, Cher reminds us that we've created something; we're experts at that! A crisis shouldn't radically alter our fundamental message or our ability to support the communities we've built. Ep 102102: Share what you love with visual artist Ana Paz

Episode 102. "I realized that when you do something with your hands or you are creative, you create something, you feel more satisfied, you feel more fulfilled." ~Ana Paz, visual artist, teacher & retreat facilitator Want to stave off shelter-in-place boredom and re-energize your spirit? Ana Paz, a Romanian artist living in Bodensee, Switzerland, says creating art during COVID-19 is the ultimate act of self-care. This episode isn't a study in productivity or even fine art. Instead, it's an invitation to return to something you once loved or engage in a new project. The medium isn't important. Nor are the results. It's all about the process, says Ana, a lesson she shared with students via multi-day artists' retreats across Europe prior to COVID-19. Now, the pandemic has severely limited her ability to host offline, especially in nearby Germany and Northern Italy, so she's taken her inspiring creativity virtual, teaching free workshops and posting replays on YouTube. That's not to say Ana hasn't felt the pull of a long bath or lazy afternoon of Netflix. She's given in to fluctuations in her mood and output, a direct result of pandemic fatigue. She's allowed herself the space to set aside goals in favor of recharging both physically and mentally. Eventually, though, Ana points out that everyone reaches their Netflix or social media consumption limit. That's when the urge to create strikes. When it does, she recommends that we ignore perfectionism in favor of connection to that driving force. Consuming other people's work is easy. Creating can feel difficult at first. Be kind to your art, follow your curiosity, and enjoy yourself. Get the full show notes and connect with Ana http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/102. P.S. Episode 101. "The one thing that I have been seeing is 'I haven't saved up' and the guilt around that. Ep 100100: Behind the scenes celebration with listeners and The Creative Impostor Studios

Episode 100. "Go, explore one of the episodes and really go into that story and just, you know, come out of it feeling like you just made a new friend. Even though you may have never, you MAY never meet them, you may never message them, but at least you know the struggles or the victories of someone else, which you know, you never know how it'll affect you and kind of drive you or inspire you. So that's it. I feel that's, that's the power of podcasting. Good storytelling." ~Edwin Ruiz, Technical Director, The Creative Impostor Studios Happy 100! Thank you so much for joining me for the 100th episode celebration of The Creative Impostor podcast — I truly would not be here if not for you. Seriously, if my download numbers were 0 I would have quit this gig long ago. I could not think of a better time to celebrate a huge milestone than RIGHT NOW. I don't know about you, but I need it. "I remember thinking that the title of this podcast was made just for me and remembered how soothing Andrea's voice was as a grounding element along with the background of mountains and farmland." ~Christina Dynamite, Podcast Listener, The Creative Impostor I am so happy to share with you both the voices of some listeners, who have been following The Creative Impostor for a while AND the voices of The Creative Impostor team (yep — i have a TEAM! behind the scenes and they are amazing humans.) But before we get there… I want to share the experience of getting listener feedback and HEARING your voice. I've been asking for MONTHS for listeners to choose an episode title from the past 5 years and send a voice recording to me telling me in just a few minutes how that particular episode or title impacted your creative life and work. I got a few responses - 3 to be exact. And each time an email popped into my inbox with the subject line "episode 100" I would inhale, smile, and then my palms would get a little sweaty. So I download the file and import it to my audio editing software. I see the visual waveform pop up on my screen and I click play. And it's like opening a completely unexpected gift that ends up being your favorite one — every single time. "You need to get the guts to use your voice and go out and do something, and then that can be kind of hard and scary." ~Stephanie Breese, Editing Apprentice, The Creative Impostor Studios Get the full show notes and connect with everyone featured at http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/100. *** Practice Yoga & Mantra with me Sundays at Noon CST. Ep 99099: Pause, breathe, slow down with Ellen Katz, psychotherapist and meditation guide

Episode 099. "And, of course, we know that futurizing is literally a recipe for anxiety. So, whenever we start wondering what we're going to do, and we're facing so many unknown variables, it's an impossible task, right? So we're setting ourselves up for constant agitation. The cure for that, of course, is to continue to come back into the present moment." ~Ellen Katz Leaving this episode here, in the productivity-hack and to-do list-free zone. How are you feeling? No, really. In between Zoom happy hours and virtual house parties, how much time have you taken to check in - with yourself? If the thought of sitting with all those feels makes you hyperventilate, you're not alone. That's why Ellen Katz, MS MFT, is back, to help us get emotionally sober. How? By gently talking us through why we're (rightly) feeling anxious and what we can do to coexist with our emotions in the time of COVID-19 and beyond. Take this opportunity to return to the present moment. Yeah, you've heard the expression before and, for good reason. It's wisdom passed down for millennia, a mantra in many forms found throughout the world's religions and spiritual practices. And, for some of us, it's ridiculously tricky to access when we need it most. Like now, when the world is bombarding our brains with discrepancies. People in masks. Too many people not in masks! No traffic noise. Too much traffic noise! The constant drip-drip-drip of disparities between what is normal and what has become the new normal is enough to trigger an overproduction of cortisol and other stress hormones. Admitting vulnerability calms our nervous system down enough to more clearly assess our situation and access solutions to ease our stress. Humans are built to solve problems but we're all feeling less capable right now. That's ok! We are, collectively, resilient beings. Not perfect. Not immune. Resilient. Ellen urges us to lean into that resilience by turning down the volume on our need to futurize all the problems. You only control your actions, your responses. Your inner wise person wants you to know that, in this moment, you are safe. Your feelings are valid and you can thrive alongside them in this new normal. Ep 98098: Pivot before you need to with Ivy Summer, destination wedding planner

Episode 098. "It is not the time to NOT send out that newsletter. It's not the time to take a break on Facebook Lives. This is the time to jump on and have live Q and A because it is about just reaching out... To be able to respond very quickly to couples and what they need because it's not only about the message, but how you respond to it." ~Ivy Summer Wedding planners are specialists at the art of pivoting. Sure, the timing for a venue to cancel or a cake maker to bail isn't always great but a seasoned planner generally has an ace up their sleeve ready to save the big day. At least that's the narrative played out in every 90s romcoms ever made about the industry - way back before shelter-in-place and social distancing reshaped in a hurry how, when, and if couples get married. Ivy Summer is a certified wedding planner and a former digital nomad who now runs her global empire from northern Greece. Like most of us, she's questioning how she can be of service to her clients while maintaining her own safety. Unlike many of us, Ivy already had a plan in the works. Her suggestions for managing a business during these unprecedented times and caring for your tribe are a mix of energetic optimism and forthright honesty. While she's hyper-focused on her clients right now - some of whom have lost venue deposits, others who have had to put off their big day for a year - Ivy is well aware that her mental health and the safety of her family are equally important. Connection remains her go-to coping strategy. Checking in with her followers via Instagram and hosting Facebook Q & A sessions keep the business running. Maintaining lines of communication with family and friends back home keeps her sane. Ep 97097: Adapt to something that's not standard and normal with Michel Thomas, jazz musician

Episode 097. "It's just interesting to me that you're suddenly seeing more in the media about the concept of gig economy...It's just like, man, if you talk to artists and musicians we know the gig economy. That's been a standard, that's our lives. We've lived that since the dawn of time...If they'd only talk to us, we could have told them how bad it's gonna be, how vulnerable everyone would be." ~Michele Thomas Good enough. That phrase has been playing on a loop lately. Maybe you've asked yourself the following questions about good enough: How much of that unpolished content is good enough to share now? How much social media posting is good enough to remind followers that you're there to help, but not overwhelm them (or you)? Whose contribution to society is good enough to earn them a decent living wage or housing stability or healthcare? Didn't think we'd go deep, huh? That's ok. This pandemic has laid bare myriad imbalances and forced many of us to reconsider the answers to weightier questions: Why is the only route to security through a traditional payrolled job? Why aren't the services or art that gig workers provide deemed good enough to earn them in place in the national conversation about income equality and similar protections? Michele Thomas is a Chicago-based jazz singer and voice teacher who knows what it means to gig. It was artists, after all, who created the original gig economy long before mobile apps co-opted the idea. Up until last month, Michele was busy hustling that gig life when her calendar suddenly fell apart thanks to the Coronavirus outbreak here in the US. The subsequent weeks have been a mixed bag of worry, optimism, introspective creative projects, and...worry. Beyond the logistics of where to perform now and how to deliver that sound, jazz musicians like Michele are grappling with how these emergency methods might forever change the genre itself. Without the hustle to keep her busy, Michele's had time to reflect on how much of her art and her happiness relies on her audience. She's also protective of that connection, deeply concerned about how gig workers and traditional employees fair after the pandemic. She hopes all the time spent sheltering in place consuming art and unable to support our local services will lead to a collective reckoning about who and what constitutes good enough. I PROMISE it's not as heavy as it sounds! This conversation is full of light, love and laughter. Listen to the end -- you'll be renewed. Ep 96096: Control what you can with copywriter Noel Bosco

Episode 096. "I feel like it's easier for some of my clients to come closer to their audience and say, 'Hey, this is hard for me to. I don't have all the answers. I'm not dealing with this in the perfect way. Let's figure it out together.'" ~Noel Bosco Add motives and messaging to the list of daily concerns that have gone haywire lately. My mental capacity is running near empty just trying to regulate my sleep pattern, my eating regimen, my emotional wellbeing… How about you? If you're a full-fledged business owner, content creator, or someone maintaining a side hustle, how do you position your content now in these "uncertain times"*? *Ugh! I strongly dislike using that term! If anyone has come across better phrasing, please share! For now, we're just gonna go with it. Noel Bosco is a copywriter working with B2B clients and non-profits. Her pragmatic advice is a solid reminder for any creative struggling to manage their message in the midst of crisis: put your audience first and raise the curtain on some of your own vulnerability. This is a unique time to be sure and most audiences are hungry for stability. Conversely, they're overwhelmingly willing to forgive you for stumbling over that initial Zoom attempt or an inaugural Instagram Live (and the good news here is that you'll only get better!) Triple points are also given to anyone thrown into a WFH situation with a spouse or roommate suddenly in residence 24/7. Or a child in tow. Or a cat who's suddenly discovered your laptop keyboard is the perfect place for naps. Leave capitalizing on the situation to faceless big-name players desperate to sell you insurance or a home alarm system. Instead, Noel suggests finding ways to be of service to your audience. Major crises are bound to test relationships. But, as Noel points out, the language of marketing and copywriting is always shifting, the core principles - making and nurturing connections - don't, even in uncertain times**. **Seriously, help me. Ep 95095: Serve your clients and community with Tina Conroy, The Intuitive Woman

Episode 095. "I always say to people that energy follows intention. So when you pray for someone or you have a good thought for someone, you send out that prayer, you send out that thought. We know that when we do that collectively and we're connected, there's so much good that can happen." ~Tina Conroy Time for a bit of the obvious: stress and anxiety are two of life's constants. From minor aggravations to major worldwide meltdowns, what we lean on - physically, mentally, and emotionally - brings us comfort and, with any luck, relief. But what happens when your normal path to calm is blocked? How do you start a home practice? What do you do to supplement therapeutic work that normally takes place in an office or studio? Tina Conroy E-RYT, RMT is a modern healer who knows her way around the technical side of mind-body support. As host of The Intuitive Woman podcast, she explores the innate wisdom of the conscious and subconscious mind via solo episodes and chats with guests. As Director of Energy Healing and Reiki Master at The Center For Integrative Medicine in New York, she teaches yoga and oversees the reiki certification program. Offering so much virtual service in a time of great anxiety can come with real consequences if not managed correctly, compassionately. For someone whose work and spirit thrive on connection, I love that Tina's multi-platform approach to healing is a model for a new normal and a relief to anyone searching for virtual support. Ep 94094: Reinvent your revenue (and freak out if you need to) with Sami Gardner

Episode 094. "It's okay to modify things. It doesn't need to always be business as usual. In fact, I would recommend to people, if you're really worried about how to show up, how to sell, how to market right now, just be giving... Be a giver." ~Sami Gardner Life in the time of a pandemic. Whether you're brainstorming a complete personal website rebrand or nesting under a pile of bread-baking cookbooks, one thing is certain in these uncertain times: the world of work has been radically altered. How do creatives greet these changes? Where do they find new opportunities? Who can they turn to for help? Sami Gardner is a digital nomad, podcast host, and career specialist for the gig economy. With her guidance, thousands of professionals have developed their networks, reinvented their revenue streams, and generally recession-proofed their careers. With the current crisis grounding Sami to her family's home in Tucscon, AZ, she's taken the forced time-out to assess all aspects of her business before the next challenge hits - namely, a virus-prompted recession. She shares some pro-tips with The Creative Impostor that you can put into practice today, tomorrow, or whenever you've recouped enough stamina to look ahead. Sami balances maximizing this odd downtime with a version of self-care that fits her personality. Boxed wine and video games help her recharge. The bottom line is, while this isn't the perfect time to reinvent a business, it's the time we've been given. How can you make the most of it and stay sane in the process? If you need to take time out before you answer for a bubble bath or your favorite video game, that's okay, too. Ep 93093: Stop making stuff that nobody wants with Lucas Spivey, Culture Hustlers

Episode 093. "If you think you need to move to a city to access the creative buzz, I think you're looking at the situation through the wrong lens... Geographically there's a revolution happening like across the world... and it's happening in every city every basement, like every street corner, every crusty little studio. It's a global revolution that's happening right now." ~Lucas Spivey Are you currently stuck inside, furiously learning the steps to the coronavirus shuffle? Join the club. The world-wide lockdown is forcing freelancers and creatives to pivot on regularly-scheduled content or scrap their trusty playbook altogether. So, what does a Creative Impostor do when the entire planet is forced into time out? She goes for a spin* in a souped-up, decommissioned ambulance with Lucas Spivey of Culture Hustlers and records a podcast about the future of art and, more importantly, getting paid for said art. *Full disclosure: She did NOT go for a spin during the quarantine! This episode was recorded about a year ago (yes, I know!) But the message, the spirit, the HOPE is full-on what creatives need to hear right now; a feel-good episode for when things don't feel so good. Lucas is a BFA MBA who's traveled to all 50 states (yes, even Hawaii) in his mobile incubator, capturing wisdom and stories from the country's hardworking, often unsung, creators. It's life-on-the-road as PhD. Seriously, he scrapped the formal experience of post-graduate school for a sometimes-sleeps-in-a-van existence. That multifunction studio on wheels van life coupled with his traditional educational forms the foundation for his virtual coaching program. So why this episode and why now? Because Lucas's enthusiasm for creators and the creative process is contagious (too soon in the midst of a pandemic?)And, his key pieces of advice have the power to shift the way you do and deliver your art. That may be a hard sell when we've been told to practice social distancing, when scoring a roll of toilet paper and coordinating a family check-in call are the new self-care rituals. But the shelter in place orders will eventually lift. When it does, maybe you'll have found fresh inspiration and designed a new normal way of creating. Ep 92092: Think of yourself as a vocal professional with Wendy Parman

Episode 092. "Think of it [voice] as symbolic of many things about our central identity, let's say, and not really even symbolic but literally, how do we express ourselves day-to-day about who we are the most? I guess what I'm trying to say is that working on your voice can [be] a whole life-changing experience." ~Wendy Parman What do an opera soprano, a university lecturer, and a podcaster have in common? They're all vocal professionals! In fact, according to performer and voice teacher Wendy Parman, you're probably a vocal professional. Think about that for a moment: anyone who leans heavily on their voice, either to create art or do their job is a pro. Salesperson or singer. Teacher or actor. With that in mind, why are so many of us trying to muscle our voice into places it just doesn't want (or need) to go? If you're doing so because you don't feel like you deserve the right to occupy your space, listen up! You should fill your corner of the world to capacity. On your own vocal merits. Wendy's teaching and performing style is a refreshing take in the often harsh, anonymous world of online critiques - those knee-jerk, uninformed responses that inevitably land in YouTube comments, podcast reviews, and post-show Twitter feeds. Side note: if you've posted that kind of analysis in the past, Wendy's insight will give you pause before you do so again. She'll also arm you with deeper insight into why conditioning the uniqueness out of our voices (or anyone else's) is a recipe for inauthenticity. Unpacking that for a moment, Wendy cautions her clients against their desire to sound like someone else. That's a common fallback position for anyone not yet in command of their power, this belief that forcing Adele's dark, dramatic tones onto their own will make them more listenable, more successful. Listenability doesn't stem from mimicry. I hear you thinking, "But Andrea, isn't there a fine line between listenability (or castability if you're a performer) and standing on principle for my unique sound?" Glad you asked! Vocal styles (like Paris fashions) go in and out of favor. From flourishes to fry, there's always a current "it" sound. But if that's not your sound, don't force it! Wendy suggests learning how to harness control and foster good technique - think breathwork, warmups, and new-to-me cool-down exercises. Once you learn how sound is made, you'll get comfortable with what your voice has to say. Ep 91091: Nourish your gut, feel more like yourself with functional nutrition practitioner Brooke Seiz

Episode 091. "So, that work all the time productivity approach, it is very much embedded in our culture and our society. But it's not really how our nervous system is going to operate and be healthy. So, what can we do about that?" ~Brooke Seiz OK. I'm asking you to take a leap of faith with me in this episode. Don't worry, it's more an easy skip rather than a broad jump over shark-infested waters. Creative imposter syndrome begins in the gut. Wut? The gut?? Yes. I've got back-up on this one. Brooke Seiz, a board-certified functional nutrition practitioner, believes that an unhealthy gut not only affects our physical health but also taxes our mental well-being. Symptoms of a gut imbalance manifest in complex ailments – think leaky gut, chronic fatigue, adrenal dysfunction, IBS. Even low-grade instances of these diseases have the power to curtail our natural affinity toward play and exploration, self-expression and (managed) risk. The result is a diminished ability to work and create to our fullest potential and truest nature, the happy, healthy opposite of an imposter. Whew. That's a lot to digest (I couldn't resist!) Like, what even IS functional nutrition? Brooke's expertise and background in the arts come in handy when we're defining functional nutrition and discussing big concepts like the parasympathetic nervous system or the microbiome. But Brooke isn't advocating for nutritional change only. Play is a natural component of healing, that child-like desire to engage in an activity with no structured outcome other than to have fun. When was the last time you played at something? There's a lot to learn from Brooke's personal story of thwarted play, crippling stomach issues, and the realization that her authentic self was physically and emotionally impacted by her gut health. The biggest take-away from our discussion is this: there really is something to our gut feelings and butterflies in the stomach and queasy tummies. Ep 90090: Learn how to use your voice (and have fun) with Lisa Orkin

Episode 090. "Don't podcast for results. Podcast because you're making something you believe in and make it about that. Make it about the art of what you're doing. Make it about something you believe that you want to put into the world and don't worry about feedback." ~Lisa Orkin, creator of Project WooWoo I'm calling it: my conversation with Lisa Orkin - voiceover actor, podcast host, writer, speaker (the list goes on and on) - is the best Creative Impostor episode of 2020 so far! I mean, it's got everything! A Back to the Future kind of open in which Lisa and I experiment with mental time travel. Humorous name-dropping. Life advice you can put into practice woven throughout. Tension! Drama! Comedy! (all the elements of selling a compelling story, by the way) Oh, and Lisa tosses in an anecdote about auditioning for work only to have the producers lament that they'd prefer her father (famed voiceover actor Dick Orkin) for the role… if only he weren't dead. Talk about an imposter syndrome pile-on! See. I told you: best episode of 2020 so far. But beyond the comedy (did I mention that Lisa's a veteran improv performer as well?), what stands out to me about this episode is its optimism. Lisa has faith in her ability not only to craft and tell her story (or, in her case, stories), she has faith that someone wants to listen. And, after nurturing many projects simply for her own enjoyment, she truly does believe that, by doing something you love long enough, you'll find your people and they'll find you. If that sentiment sounds too optimistic for you, then you need this show now more than ever. It is, after all, the best show of 2020 so far. P.S. If you've never listened to Project WooWoo, I recommend the episode with Madame Zoltair (it's my favorite!) Ep 88088: Explore what it means to be worthy LIVE with Charlotte on self-publishing

Episode 088. "I learned that it's not about me, and the minute I make it about me, I sabotage myself. The minute I remember that it' s not about me, I go -- all the walls go away." ~Charlotte Elea, on her book writing process Charlotte Elea is no stranger to The Creative Impostor. I've featured her twice, episode 034: Step into your power with tarot and episode 085: Devote yourself to the spark within you. And I just can't get enough! Her new book To Be Worthy is available right now. The subtitle is The Radical Realization That You Get to Be YOU and I think that her writing and self-publishing process is very much about that exact thing. This conversation about that process and about letting her book have her own personality and journey was recorded via Facebook Live inside The Creative Impostor Facebook Group, which I invite you to join at http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/fb. IF you would like to have more FB live conversations like this one with past or future Creative Impostor guests, please let me know. I only want to do it if you want to come! ALSO... Ep 87087: Creative Impostor stories for you and happy birthday to me!

Episode 087. "And during the whole experience, I thought I SHOULD make an audio journal, document what I was going through, but the few times I tried to record, I either sobbed or I just sat there staring at the time code counting up the seconds of my not knowing what to say." ~Andrea Klunder It's my birthday week! I don't know about you, but birthdays are always a time of reflection for me — what has this past year meant for me and what lies ahead. It's also a time to celebrate myself! And I am not above asking YOU for a gift. That's right — and it will not cost you a thing, nor do you need my mailing address. What I would love more than anything is a story, an anecdote, a short acknowledgment that all the labor and love (and work) I put into producing this show means something to someone other than me! Here's how… Go to thecreativeimpostor.com/titlelist. Pick one of the episode titles listed there that resonates with you — it could be because you listened to that episode and it pinged something for you — or maybe you didn't even listen to the episode, it's just the phrase that holds some meaning. Ep 86086: Speak about the hard things LIVE Q&A with Monica RIvera

Episode 086. "The talk is called The Flip Side of Loneliness. It addresses my cure for loneliness which, in a nutshell, I believe is an inside job." ~Monica Rivera Do not be fooled by the length of this show! Brilliant things come in small packages or, in this case, short episodes. In fact, it's perfect timing especially if you're considering doing something crazy-brave. Like give a TEDx talk. Her insights are about more than just what's going through one's head as they take the TEDx stage. Did I mention that Monica got up in front of a roomful of (mostly) strangers to talk about her experiences with bone-deep loneliness? And yet… when you hear her explain the why and the how of her TEDx Talk, you're listening to someone who had total conviction in her message. One of my favorite quotes from Monica is humble yourself to know that what you don't know is really important. She's speaking of the entire experience, that whiteknuckle ride from speaker application to stage. And we're all going to have to humble ourselves to things we just don't know. What we learn about life in the process - about loneliness, about grief, about stepping outside our comfort zones - just might make an excellent TEDx topic. Want to watch Monica Rivera's TEDx Talk? Yes, you do! YouTube Listen to Monica's podcast YOU WANNA DO WHAT?! Get the full show notes: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/086 This conversation was recorded live in The Creative Impostor Facebook Group as part of our Online Media Club. Join for free! Ep 85085: Devote yourself to the spark within with Charlotte Elea

Episode 085. "I've discovered that the most powerful way for me to use my voice is in sharing my story and sharing my breakthrough." ~Charlotte Elea Charlotte Eléa's voice has changed. No, not in that Peter-Brady-hits-puberty kind of way (look it up). Since we last spoke waaaay back on episode 34, the intuitive guide has shifted her attention from dream interpretation (utilizing the tarot deck for analysis) to helping women achieve their big, beautiful breakthrough moments. Maybe changed isn't accurate. She's still a guide and healer. But pivot seems too cubicle-bound and corporate a word to use in her presence. How do I effectively communicate her belief that we're all worthy of being heard, healed, and transformed? Thankfully, I can leave that up to Charlotte herself. With the rebranding of her business and the writing of her first book To Be Worthy, she says she's answered a calling to serve in a way that's more integrated but no less authentic than her previous project. There's some much gratitude for the journey in Charlotte's voice and I guess that hasn't changed since the last time I interviewed her. She's just as authentic in spirit and purpose now as she was in episode 34. Instead, I'll say that Charlotte Eléa's voice has emerged -- from a place of her own struggles with unworthiness. It's informed -- by the lessons she learned while nurturing Dream Intuition. It's adapted -- to new methods of sharing her message. It's evolved -- to become a powerful tool, both in print and online. And it's a joy to catch up with her to find out how she's using her voice these days. Ep 84084: Burn it -- over and over and over again with Clara Harris

Episode 084. "Take a deep breath (it's going to be okay), and go for it because the other option is to not do it and going back to that physical sensation that you get in your body when you think about... not getting your voice out there... how does that feel physically?... Usually, that gut instinct is going to let you know." ~Clara Harris Head over to Clara Harris' website and, right away, you'll notice one thing: this self-described creative entrepreneur has run out of room to describe herself. Seriously, the navigation bar atop her site is filled to bursting: Actor. Acting Teacher. Yogi. Photographer. Writer. Producer. And that's only part of her story! Mother, avid cook, podcaster… I know Clara as a fellow speaker at She Podcasts Live in Atlanta where we both appear in the session entitled Fall In Love With Your Own Voice. When the topic of conversation is voice, chances are you'll wind up talking about much more than modulation, posture, and breathwork -- although Clara and I do touch on all those elements in this episode. Spoiler alert: if you're breathing right now, there's a good chance you're doing it wrong. Clara walks us through a few of the breathing practices she teaches her coaching clients. She also gives us a pep talk for getting over ourselves because everyone cringes the first (or thousandth) time they hear their voice played back (including me). Whether you prefer pep-talk or tough love, Clara serves both in equal measure in an effort to encourage everyone to do the thing -- whatever that thing might be. So, sit up straight, take a deep breath, and listen in. Ep 83083: Rehearse! Live and breathe your presentation with Rob Biesenbach

Episode 083. "So, all these things I learned from acting: rehearsing, relentlessly planning, thinking of your audience, inhabiting the character, bringing energy to the room… Those are all critical." ~Rob Biesenbach Quick! How do you introduce yourself (your business, your big idea, your creative project) to the world? Cue the impostor! If you've just broken into a cold sweat, I understand. This is one of those questions that can trigger even the most accomplished person, causing them to retreat behind ineffectual language and timid gestures. Why is it difficult for some to claim their voice? Probably because voice is more than just the noises we make. Voice is emotion and content; it's the literal and the figurative. Rob Biesenbach has worked voice from every angle. As an actor, a corporate trainer, a speaker, and an author, he's crafted strategies that help people communicate and connect. I imagine some of you asking, "But Andrea, I'm a tax attorney (or a dog walker or a digital illustrator, or a…). What do I need to know about voice other than when to turn it up or how to dial it down?" Well, that takes us back to the question up top. FULL SHOW NOTES: thecreativeimpostor.com/083 "I think one of the most important things in our professional and personal development is getting to a place in your life where you know your strengths and you know your weaknesses so you're not apologetic about either." ~Rob Biesenbach WHERE TO FIND ROB BIESENBACH Website LinkedIn Twitter YouTube 2 Invitations for YOU Join me for She Podcasts Live in Atlanta, Georgia, October 11 through 13, 2019 I will be co-facilitating a workshop on how to fall in love with the sound of your voice. Ep 82082: Command your voice, find freedom with singer Davin Youngs

Episode 082. "There is a vulnerability that comes with the voice because it is a natural expression… of who we are. The sound of my voice carries with it the story of my life." ~Davin Youngs Honestly? I shouldn't even write show notes for this one. I mean, this episode is about voice. How we use it. How we experience it. Where it comes from. How do you summarize it with words? Davin Youngs does a great job distilling voice down to its essence. He's a singer, teacher, and sound guide with profound observations about human vocalization that reverberate in the body and in life. He's made a career helping people overcome deeply-rooted fears that block them from living fully in their voice. If you've guessed that there's a lot more than music theory being taught in one of his workshops, you're right. And whether it's learning to use your voice or uncovering your authentic selves, Davin's all about committing to the practice because that's where the magic happens. We become stronger when we're heard and we become more compassionate when we listen. My advice to you? Listen in… then burst into spontaneous sound! Ep 81081: All about your voice - feedback please!

"One of the things that I hear from clients and potential clients and podcasting community members is that a lot of people really don't like the sound of their own voice." ~Andrea Klunder, episode 081. Lately I've honestly been feeling a little bit apathetic. I've had a hard time connecting with things that I love, things that inspire me, things that energize me, things that bring me joy. And so I am genuinely happy (finally) to be exploring this series with you and I'm curious: How do you feel about your own voice? Is it a tool that you feel like you have command over? Is it something that feels vulnerable? Do you enjoy speaking or presenting? Does it make you feel nervous? Do you never really think about your voice? It's just a thing that comes out of you when you need to use it? What questions do you have about voice? Would you like to learn about ways that you can become more comfortable or more skillful with using your voice? One of the things that I hear from clients and potential clients and podcasting community members is that a lot of people really don't like the sound of their own voice, or they don't feel confident using their voice, or they worry that their voice just isn't compelling enough. Why are we in a position where so many people feel vulnerable and uncomfortable with using one of the most powerful tools that you have for connection for influence for sharing experiences and for making an impact? Email me your thoughts, questions, fears, desires around voice: Andrea [at] thecreativeimpostor.com. This can be written out in text or you can record a voice memo on your phone or fancy microphone and send me the recording I can play on the show. Ep 80080: One thing at a time, or how to change your life without changing everything

"I think it is a normal reaction to a major event in your life to want to make all of these changes at once and you know what? I think it is also impossible." ~Andrea Klunder Recently it has come to my attention that I have been trying to change everything all at once. The health crisis that I've experienced this year with surgery and recovery has set me on a trajectory where I am fully aware of all of the things in my life that I'm not 100% happy with -- all of the things in my life that I wish were better and all of the things in my life that I have felt like I could always do some day in the future. And I'm realizing that, well, I've heard it said many many times and I know it's true: The future is not guaranteed. We are not promised tomorrow. Ep 79079: Admitting I'm scared

Every time I lose my voice to laryngitis, I have a fear that it won't come back. ~Andrea Klunder What are you scared of? Having a major health crisis changes the lens on how you perceive things. Long-time fears can resurface with a vengeance and new ones you never considered before can materialize. I was inspired to do this episode and post by Sarah Buino of the Conversations with a Wounded Healer podcast (which my team edits), who was inspired by the WNYC Studios podcast 10 Things That Scare Me. Ep 78078: Self-Care Impostor

"It's amazing to me how very hard we are on ourselves whenever healing is involved. Whether one has had a hysterectomy, a fibroid removed, given birth, or "just" had a broken bone set, we expect expediency... capitalism demands it... And consumerism has co-opted self-care to mean things like manicures, cupcake breaks, and long weekends." ~Lisa Widder I AM A SELF-CARE IMPOSTOR!!! Before I was a podcaster, I was a yoga teacher, and then a Thai Bodywork practitioner, and then a meditation teacher. I owned a yoga studio for 5 years, I led a yoga teacher training. I lead musical mantra sessions, I blend essential oils, I practice tarot. In fact MANY episodes of The Creative Impostor are about self-care — whether it's me spouting off ideas and droplets of wisdom and practices or my guests sharing insights into different ways they take care of their creative selves and/or their clients… I confess I feel like I was wrong about self-care. I had never REALLY put it to the test. Get the full show notes at http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/078 Win a free pass to She Podcasts LIVE! Ep 77077: Get your story out there, Nilsa Reyna, actor, writer, director shares about Moyamoya

"Be patient with yourself. It may take longer than you think." ~Nilsa Reyna A stroke in your mid-30s. A maze of medical appointments with no answers. 6 years of searching for a diagnosis. Brain surgery. Anxiety. And recovery. Actor, writer, director Nilsa Reyna is creating performances centered around her own health journey with the hope that it helps other people connect with their own stories. May 6th is World Moyamoya Day. Moyamoya is the name of the diagnosis Nilsa finally received. Moyamoya is one of the rarest forms of occlusive cerebrovascular disorders encountered in neurosurgery. The term means a "puff of smoke" coined by a Japanese team who first described the disease because it describes how the blood vessels look on an angiogram. Ep 76CI076: Shift your paradigm, Aya-Nikole Cook, Haji Healing Salon

"I just decided when I got the diagnosis that there must be some things that I don't know about me so what can I do that will help me engage in a deeper self-study?" ~Aya-Nikole Cook What happens when you are an artist following your passion, building a name for yourself in your field, and doing work you love... and then suddenly a major health crisis comes out of the blue? That's what happened to Aya-Nikole Cook. Aya-Nikole Cook is the founder and curator at Haji Healing Salon in Chicago. Yoga, acupuncture, Reiki, bodywork, herbal remedies... located in the south side of Chicago Chatham neighborhood, Haji is a sanctuary where "thriving is our resistance." I KNEW I needed to talk with Aya when I heard the origin story of Haji while editing a business interview for a client's podcast. She had been working in the fashion industry until being diagnosed with fibroid tumors and undergoing surgery and subsequent recovery. That was the turning point when she decided to, not only engage in deeper self-study, but shift her creative talents toward facilitating healing space for her community. Listen to the episode to get the full story, and whether you yourself have gone through or are going through recovery of your own, hear some words of wisdom for engaging in your own paradigm shift of taking care of YOU. Ep 73073: Where Have I Been? Updates & Invitations

"I just sort of went into this existential crisis of -- What is The Creative Impostor? Why do I need this show?" ~Andrea Klunder It has been a while since I have released an episode here for you. My last episode was this past summer with the fabulous Matt Marr. It was a really good one. And now... I have to tell you something really strange has happened or is happening, which is that I did not plan to take a hiatus with this show. In fact over on my other podcast, Podcast Envy, all about how to craft a show that matters, I have recently advised podcasters that if they are going to take a hiatus from their show, they should tell their listeners. They should announce it. They should set some expectations so that you're not just leaving your listeners hanging and I did NOT do that myself. So where HAVE I been and why the hiatus and what can you do if you miss me? Ep 70070: Do one thing that's completely different, Monica Rivera, You Wanna Do What?!

Episode 070. "But everyone keeps saying just find your passion -- find that one thing and follow your bliss and I thought well... I have a bunch of passions, so which passion are we talking about? And that's why I kept feeling really stuck in that decision of needing to pick one thing." ~Monica Rivera I'm obsessed with podcasts and I always want MORE so there's this thing I do once a week in the She Podcasts Facebook Group on Wednesdays. I scroll through a VERY long thread of new podcast episodes by other women podcasters and pick a few I've never heard of to check out. Most of the time, I decide they're not for me but every once in a while, a show really stands out and I fall in love. That's what happened with Monica's podcast: You Wanna Do What?! When I first heard it, I thought, "I want to to be friends with this woman." Her show feels so motivating without feeling coachy or preachy or overwhelming. And I'm so happy to be getting to know her and introduce her to you! 2 stories that stand out in this interview: 1) How Monica got into podcasting 2) How she was inspired by her grandmother not to wait to try new things Listen to Monica's podcast You Wanna Do What?! I love episode 045: Are You Really Living? "I am comparing myself to myself... what I think I should be doing versus what I am doing, which I think is the worst kind because you're with yourself all the time. So you're constantly almost at war if you let yourself be." ~Monica Rivera Connect with Monica: Website Instagram Facebook Twitter "And some days honestly, I just have to sit in that space and let me feel it and just kind of go through it of kind of beating myself up a little bit and then the next day hoping that it gets better, but I never try to force myself out of something that I'm feeling." ~Monica Rivera Resources & Links Podcast Movement 2018 (I'm speaking there Wednesday @ 11am!!!) Ep 69069: Flip the script, Robyn Conley Downs, Feel Good Effect, mindset, podcasting, what it really means to be healthy

Episode 069. "I had to be able to sit there in that uncomfortable place of this is not as good as I want it to be — and that's okay."~Robyn Conley Downs I discovered Robyn when she needed a podcast editor for her new show the Feel Good Effect. That was a year ago and since then, I have listened in detail to every single one of her episodes and she continues to amaze me with her big heart, inquisitive mind, business savvy, and seemingly superhuman ability to "do it all." As we discuss in this episode, there's nothing superhuman about it and, in reality, there's a give and take to everything. In fact, in terms of mindset, one of Robyn's favorite sayings is "gentle is the new perfect." I love it and you're going to love Robyn. Take Robyn's Wellness Personality Quiz!!! Ep 65065: A remedy for not enough, self-gratitude

Episode 065. "She asked me how could I express gratitude. My first thought was "to whom?" But she meant… gratitude to mySELF." ~Andrea Klunder Pause, take a deep breath, lift your head, and look around... I just released an episode in my new-ish podcast about the craft of podcasting, Podcast Envy, about downloads, numbers, stats, etc and you probably know already how I feel about using those metrics as a measure for success from my Creative Impostor episode 57: What do numbers have to do with success? And I propose a question that applies to areas of life and work beyond podcasting, which is — if these numerical metrics were to disappear… If you could not easily see how many followers you had on Facebook or Instagram, how many people liked your picture, or retweeted your post. If you had no idea how many people were subscribed to your email newsletter or opened it or unsubscribed. If you did not have a head count for the audience of your talk or your show… If you did not see an actual number… … how would YOU measure success? How would you value your OWN work? Sometimes I feel like my own numbers are too small. Like I'm working and working and working and no one notices or cares. Like I'll never reach that critical mass of followers where suddenly the conversion statistics come out to actual sales of services and I can actually earn a sustainable comfortable income off of the content I create and the work that I do. And sometimes I feel like a fraud, teaching podcasting classes, encouraging hundreds of other people to create a podcast and being positioned as the "expert" or making recommendations on gear, equipment and software when certainly there are other people out there who know more in that department than I do. And I keep putting myself out there despite those feelings. And THEN what happens? Listen and find out... Ep 64064: Stay in the room, Stacey Herrera, Sex, Money, Creativity, The Sensuality Project

Episode 064. "Self-consciousness is the assassin of authenticity." ~Stacey Herrera Stacey Herrera is the producer and host of the podcast The Sensuality Project. I love it, it makes me blush and it makes me think about topics we often don't get to talk about in a constructive way. And I don't mean just sex -- but what the experience of being in this physical, sensual body is like; relationships; permission, consent and boundaries; social norms and prejudices; and so much more. Stacey is facilitating a premium community JUST FOR these kinds of conversations amongst "sister friends": The Sense & Sexability Society In this episode, we talk about: The difference between sensuality and sexuality Why it's so important for us to normalize and talk about sex The connection between sex, money and creativity Our chakras (energy!) and our sexuality Impostor syndrome manifesting as self-consciousness Advice from Stacey! Ep 60060: Reduce the friction, David Kadavy, writer, producer of Love Your Work podcast

"If you're brave enough to follow your curiosity, then that place that you end up will often be a place that nobody else has been." ~David Kadavy, Episode 060 I've been binging David Kadavy's podcast, Love Your Work, ever since I discovered him on Jennifer Gardner's podcast, RoamHowl. And then I read his new book The Heart to Start AND now it's available as an audio book on Audible. David's work is the gift that keeps on giving -- and yet, I haven't paid for any of it. Yet. And that's one thing we talk about in this episode -- the challenge of being a content creator, following your curiosity and figuring out how to make a living doing it WITHOUT selling some kind of $1000+ online course. Get The Heart to Start for Kindle here, or the audio version on Audible here!* We also talk about: How David got from Nebraska to Silcon Valley to Chicago and now Colombia -- where he's discovered how to reduce the friction of daily life, variable weather and decision making in order to optimize creative productivity Creating what you like to consume Creative routines, efficiency and the mix of neuroscience research and self-study he employed to come up with his process Crowdsourcing the editing of his new book "The Heart to Start" and the process by which he tested his ideas via his blog on Medium to help get over any feelings of self-doubt Why it's important to allow ideas the time and space to incubate by disconnecting from your work PODCASTING - David's inspiration and why audio over video Asking for money -- where, when and how How posturing as an "expert" can trigger David's own impostor feelings and how Seth Godin's advice -- reframe what you have to offer from a place of generosity -- is the remedy for that!
